2016 MISSOURI S&T FOOTBALL 2S&T Head Coach Tyler Fenwick: Tyler Fenwick is in his fourth season at the helm of Missouri S&T’s football program. Fenwick, the 19th head coach in the history of the S&T program, was the first to lead the Miners to a winning season in his first year as head coach since 1914.

Fenwick came to S&T after a successful six-season stint as offensive coordinator at Missouri Western; the Griffons played in the post-season in each of those six years, including an appearance in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals in 2012. MWSU was 53-18 during the six years Fenwick served on its staff. He is a native of Los Angeles, Calif. and also coached at Occidental College in California for four years and at Minnesota State University at Moorhead for a year before joining the staff at Missouri Western. He played collegiately as a wide receiver at Los Angeles Valley College and at the University of New Mexico.

Graham’s big nights: Missouri S&T’s Braxton Graham, named three weeks ago as the GLVC’s “Player of the Week” on special teams, had had two bigs game this season where he has reached some high water marks. On Sept. 10 at West Florida, he set a league record by returning a punt 93 yards for a touchdown and piled up 301 all-purpose yards that ranks third on the Miners’ all-time list. It was the sixth time in GLVC history that a player accumulated at least 300 all-purpose yards. Last week against William Jewell, Graham recorded career highs in receptions with 15 and yards with 186 in the Miners’ victory over the Cardinals. Graham had 212 all-purpose yards in the game, his fourth career game and second this year with at least 200 yards.

Styron ties GLVC mark: Last Saturday, Missouri S&T’s kicker Ben Styron tied a GLVC record by kicking four goals in the win over William Jewell. He made kicks from 42 -- the longest by a Miner since 2013 -- 32, 37 and 32 yards away. He had a chance to break the record, but his fifth attempt of the night was blocked. Styron tied the mark set earlier that day by Lincoln’s Alex Templeton. Swart in a select group: Two weeks ago at Saint Joseph’s, S&T quarterback Tyler Swart became just the fourth quarterback in school history to throw multiple touchdown passes in at least five consecutive games. Swart, who had just one scoring pass a week ago, threw four scoring passes in last year’s season finale against Quincy and at least two in the first four games of 2016. The others with at least four consecutive games with multiple scoring passes are Evan Gray (17 in 2003 and 2005), Josh Firm (10 in 2012) and Joe Winters (nine in 2006).

Scoring streak: Missouri S&T comes into this weekend’s contest having scored in each of its last 57 games, which is the second-longest such streak in school history. The current string, which started on Sept. 17, 2011, trails only the record 70-game streak from 2002-09. In addition, the Miners have also scored in each of their last 38 road games which also ranks third on the all-time list for consecutive road victories. The only longer ones were the 43-game string that preceded the current one (2001-09) and a 45-game run from 1975-84. Fastest starts in GLVC history: The Miners’ score 55 seconds against Bacone marked the 12th time in GLVC history that a team scored in the opening minute of play. Missouri S&T owns the fastest score in league history -- six seconds on a safety in last year’s game with Saint Joseph’s -- and is tied for the second-fastest at 15 seconds when Spencer Elrod returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in 2014 at Midwestern State. The Miners are the only team on the list of 12 that have scored three times in the opening minute of action.

2016 MISSOURI S&T FOOTBALL 8

Series history with Kennesaw State: Saturday’s game marks the first meeting between the schools. It also marks the 24th S&T game against an opponent from the NCAA Division I ranks since 1982 and first since the Miners faced South Dakota to close the 2011 campaign (complete list is on page 23).

A victory over Kennesaw State would:-- Improve the Miners to 4-2 and give them their third win in succession. -- Give the Miners their first three-game winning streak since the 2014 season (Sept. 27-Oct. 11). -- Give the Miners back-to-back road wins for the first time since beating Southwest Baptist and Saint Joseph’s in 2014. -- Give S&T its first win over a school from the NCAA Division I level since beating Butler in 2006.

Quick Hits on Kennesaw State: The Owls, a member of the Big South Conference at the NCAA FCS level, enter Saturday’s game at 3-1 and have won three in a row since an overtime loss in their opener to East Tennessee State. Kennesaw State, who beat Furman 52-42 last week, has averaged 45.7 points in those three wins and is 12th at the FCS level in scoring at 38 points per game. Kennesaw State has the ninth-ranked offense in FCS and fifth-best rushing attack, averaging 282 yards per game on the ground and 482.3 total yards per contest. Balance has been a key to the success, as Micah Reed leads the Owls with 240 yards and quarterback Chandler Burks has 202 yards and five touchdowns. Burks has also completed 31-of-48 passes for 483 yards and four touchdowns; he is averaging 15.6 yards per completion. Cornerback Dante Blackmon has four interceptions on the season and is the national leader in FCS with his 2.5 passes defended per game; the four picks are also tied for the national lead. The Owls’ leading tackler is linebacker Izzy Sam with with 30 on the year, while defensive end Tonarious Portress has 22 tackles with seven of them for a loss.
