PROPOSAL
It is proposed to continue research onzproblems
critical to a clarification of the fundamental aspects of the
stimulus-response relationship ia biologicfisysteros. Studies
will be conducted utilising chronic animal pr eparations with
permanent septal electrodes. Investigations will be conducted
utilising chronic electrode preparations coupled with selected
classical-typos o£ conditioning. Studies will be conducted on
the geography of the brain is selected specie s of animalsto
determine the locus in which stimulations will produce specific
reactions.
A careful literature survey, especially of the Russian
literature, of foreign research in this area will be conducted.

progress in the fields of assessment and control of behavior at
the present time. It is planned to utilize an interdisciplinary
approach in this research with emphasis on the side of the physical
science 3 . Several advanced mathematical techniques and physical
models^have been suggested as fruitful research areas not pre s ently
being exploited. Problems arising from the difference in
excitability and behavioral response among members of an animal

PROPOSALlUt>
Tt la proposed to mount the initial phase 3 of aprogram
alrae* at-an eventual clarification of the fundamental aspects
of the problem of stimulus - response relationshipin biological
systems. The present theoretical models andconceptsin this
area are- not only inade^te^ut also represent^o^g^to
further progress in the evaluation andcontrol ofMolojical
systems, including man. (See work such asLoe'«re> S,
pg 692 , 1959) The development Ofpractical tools for this vork i
the fora of chronic animal preparationswithpenaanent septal^
electrodes has lately opened the door to effectiveresearch in
this area r~-
~
Initially"the work will consist of a carefulliterature^
especially of the Russian literature, coupledwith various classical
—
types of conditioning experiments uoing the cbr°^e^le^^3^3*0/
tions available from animal guidance programs . :Later,
these experiments will be pooled with those involving3ta"d
^Jd^ei
effects on the sane preparationsto design criticalexperiments -iraei
at providing' new abstract models for thesephenomena.
It is planned that during the first yearone inve stlgatlgfi. can
complete the literature work and with aminimum of help carry
thePinitial animal studies required for the design
of
Avr^r^nenta to be carried out during the second year^ Eiefora of these
experiments cannot presently be visualizedbecause of the inadequacies
—
of pyeaent knowledge.
