Developing Narrative SkillsA program for 6 to 8 year olds.
This learning resource contains a instructional
manual, 11 colour narrative structure A4 cards and
a story narrratives A3 colour poster.
The narrative program has been specifcally
designed for 6 to 8 year olds and is the third
in a series of four resources.
Research reports that narrative ability
correlates with literacy and academic
achievement. In addition, narrative pro-
grams typically enhance comprehension
and written expression ability.
Designed by Speech Pathologists, the pro-gram empowers educators with a process
that explicitly instructs this vital skill.
The program presents a range of narrative
tasks in the order of ascending complexity
(i.e. pre-narrative, oral narrative retells, writ-
ten narrative retells and fnally narrative gen-
eration tasks).
The manual outlines how to instruct 6 to 8
year old narrative ability and recommendsover 45 suitable picture books. It includes
summaries on how the narrative structure
relates to each book.
The accompanying cards and poster make
this an ideal all in one teaching resource.
Other resources in this range are:
Developing News Telling and Narrative Skills -
A program for 4 year olds.
Developing News Telling and Narrative Skills -
A program for 5 year olds.

When? Once upon a timeWho? a duck
What? lived and worked
Where? on a farm in the country.
Remember: Ask the children to recall at least 5 jobs (household or farmbased) that the duck attended to.
Problem or Event
The poor duck had to do all the work while the lazy farmer stayed inbed and ate chocolates.
Character(s) Feelings
The duck felt exhausted, frustrated, annoyed, upset
and confused.
Character(s) Thoughts
Implied: the duck wished
that he didnt have to do all
the jobs by himself and that
he could get some help. He
wished that the farmer wasnt
so lazy and mean to him.
Events
One night the ducks friends (the cow, the sheep and the hens) gath-ered in the barn/shed and made a plan to chase the farmer off his farm.
They waited until it was nearly dawn/sun rise.
The animals quietly crept into the house and up the stairs.
They climbed under the farmers bed so that they could push him out ofbed and then chased him off the farm.
Ending
The next morning the animals found the duck (by himself as usual doinghis jobs) and explained that the farmer was longer on the farm.
Character(s) Feelings
The duck felt excited, re-lieved, thrilled and proud.
Character(s) Thoughts
The duck thought howlucky he was to have suchgreat friends, or that he
could do the jobs togetherwith his friends, or that hewas glad that the farmerwas no longer able to bosshim around.
