MOBILE SOLUTIONS DRIVE FLEET EFFICIENCIES, COMPLIANCE AND RETENTION

IntroductionThe transportation industry is notorious for

lagging behind new technologies. But as

it faces a multitude of challenges including

driver shortages, uncertain fuel costs and

strict Department of Transportation (DOT)

requirements, companies are increasingly

turning to the newest mobile solutions to

streamline internal processes and boost

operational efficiency.

These new technologies allow managers

to track driver performance and uncover

inefficiencies in the system or with driver

habits. They’re cutting down on clerical

errors on the road and in the office by

incorporating paperless documentation,

and allowing for real-time compliance and

safety tracking.

Some companies already use dashboard-

mounted software solutions to link drivers

with dispatch and produce reports on

driving hours and vehicle conditions. Using

tablets, fleet managers can instantaneous-

ly update drivers on detours, reroute them

around heavy traffic, and route them to

preferred fuel vendors.

This eBook looks at how comprehen-

sive mobile solutions can transform the

way transportation moves—and help

companies retain drivers in a time of

severe shortages.

E ach year, 9.2 billion tons of freight

moves within the United States,

thanks to nearly three million

heavy-duty trucks, three million truck

drivers and 37 billion gallons of diesel fuel.1

A typical line-haul fleet spends 20% to

30% of its time idling over the course of

year, and in some fleets, trucks spend

up to 40% of the time with the engine

running but not moving.2 Bad directions

and traffic congestion mean more wasted

fuel and time. Pedal-to-the-metal starts

hike fuel costs too, with the difference in

fuel usage between a good driver and a

bad driver 20% or more.3

Then there’s the cost of dealing with

logbooks. Truck drivers spend an average

of 110 hours per year completing paper

logbooks. Management spends 51 million

hours reviewing and storing hard copy

log records, and the fleet’s back office

spends an average of three minutes per

logbook, per day reviewing for accuracy

and completeness. Total annual cost of

paperwork compliance: More than $63.3

million per year.4

Considering those numbers, the im-

portance of digitally gauging the fleet’s

performance and streamlining operations

becomes clear. Even a small efficiency

gain can pay off big over the long haul.

Telematics is changing the landscape

That’s where telematics—the use of

wireless devices and “black box” tech-

nologies to transmit data and commu-

nications in real time back to the fleet

operator—comes in. Targeted navigation

increases efficiency and safety for drivers

and cargo by providing real-time updates

to approved routes, allowing drivers to

bypass road closures and traffic conges-

tion, while geofence capabilities can direct

vehicles to the correct entry gate and

loading dock.

For fleet managers, telematics offers a

single solution to reduce operational costs.

By linking to truck cabs and fleet logistics,

it streamlines communications and gives

real-time reports of progress and com-

pliance with regulations. Managers can

track hours of service—and monitor safety

habits behind the wheel.

For maintenance, vehicle sensors can

alert drivers to engine problems and

other diagnostic issues, while informing

routing centers when the vehicle is out of

service and repair centers with proactive

schedule alerts. By capturing vehicle

diagnostics, the maintenance staff can

optimize performance and assess the

useful life of the vehicle.

Drivers not only have to consider

road conditions, fuel levels and

delivery deadlines; they also must

adhere to DOT requirements and reg-

ulations from the Federal Motor Carrier

Safety Administration (FMCSA).

Newer electronic alternatives are making

compliance easier than ever while also

cutting down on errors. For example,

paper logbooks can be unintentionally in-

complete and overly reliant on the driver’s

memory. Mobile fleet technologies, like

tablets, allow drivers to easily and immedi-

ately input data into one simple form that

contains all the necessary information.

Roadcheck complianceThese technologies work for Roadcheck

compliance, as well. In fact, Comply365’s

mobile platform, installed on Samsung

Galaxy tablets, prevents the kind of mistakes

that resulted in almost 19% of inspected

trucks being taken out of service in 2014.

More than 46% of out-of-service violations

related to hours-of-service tracking, and

another 21% related to a lack of shipping

papers for hazardous materials.5 These

types of paperwork snafus can be cleaned

up using new mobile technologies.

Electronic logging devicesThe future is coming. By December 16,

2017, companies will be required to use

electronic logging devices (ELDs) in truck

cabs. Mobile tablets and smartphones are

more flexible than systems hardwired into

the cab, because drivers can use them for

inspections, updates and communication

wherever they are.

T he American Trucking Association

anticipated a shortage of 48,000

drivers by the end of 2015. Fleet

companies must find a way to retain the

drivers they have, but over the past few

years, the for-hire truckload driver turnover

rate has been over 90%.1

Investing in innovative technologies can

attract new talent. Mobile technology can

increase connectivity for these remote

employees, who often feel disconnect-

ed, by allowing them to virtually attend

company meetings and town halls while

also improving daily communication.

Companies can make driving more inter-

esting by using telematics data to set up

inter-company gamification based on driving

efficiencies, or set up reward systems for

the drivers who bring in the most efficiencies.

In confronting driver shortages and

turnover, companies can’t neglect the

more personal benefits mobile devices

provide to drivers. Samsung’s KNOX™

security platform allows drivers to use

the mobile device for personal use, while

protecting business applications in a secure

container. With this unique platform from

Samsung, company-issued tablets can be

used for entertainment and communication

during driver downtime without compromis-

ing the security of business applications.

Operator preferencesIn a 2014 National Retail Systems Inc. poll

of thousands of truck drivers, respond-

ents ranked new equipment in the top five

reasons they were attracted to their jobs.6

Rugged mobile devices are favorites for

truckers and trucking companies because

they’re easy to use and can handle web-

and app-based content.

I t’s important that mobile devices serve

multiple functions. For instance, the

advanced security and management

features of Samsung KNOX make it the

ideal Android platform for deployment

in the transportation industry. Samsung

KNOX offers a seamless and intuitive

dual-persona platform for situations

when a single Samsung device is used

for both work and play. Samsung KNOX

Workspace, with its secure container-

ization feature, provides users—and

managers—reassurance that their

personal applications and data are safe

and separate from their work data.

Because these mobile devices aren’t in

hand while the operator is driving, they

aren’t a distraction, which increases driver

safety. And if lost or stolen, Samsung

mobile devices can be remotely wiped—a

critical feature for on-the-go employees.

ConclusionIt’s a brave new world in fleet management.

The old paper method is inefficient and poten-

tially damaging to fleet companies because of

small documentation errors that can result in

fines and vehicles being taken off the road.

But Samsung has the products and all-around

solutions to help drivers stay safe and in com-

pliance while increasing their job satisfaction;

to streamline and simplify management; and to

improve processes for maintenance. They’re

solutions that are transforming the way trans-

portation moves.
