PROFILE
Building on combined strengths, that is
what Modern Laboratories is all about.
Our corporate portfolio includes Contract
Machining, Heat Treating and a Product
Design/Manufacturing entity, which affords
Modern Laboratories unique exposure
to a spectrum of materials and industrial
processes. Knowledge derived from these
activities provides expertise and insight into
physical reactions, chemistries, and cause-
effect relationships that are unavailable from most laboratories.
At Modern Laboratories, you’ll find state-of-the art technology, decades of experience across all
major categories of testing & evaluation and most importantly, a professional staff of competent,
degreed scientists ready to orchestrate an analytical approach to your testing needs no matter
how simple or complex.
YOUR PARTNERWhen Herb Sweny started Modern Industries in 1946 he resolved that his company would grow
on a basis of honorable business practices,
with customers, suppliers, employees and all
stakeholders – “Do the right thing.” He also
realized that a company that fails to perform for
those same stakeholders will ultimately fail to
succeed – “Do the thing right.”
Our customer focus is partnership-driven.
Whether your testing & evaluation needs are
basic or extremely complex, we strive to exceed
expectations on every project.
Modern Industries operates like an extension of your technical departments to
provide a seamless flow of information and analytical support.

TESTING CAPABILITIES: CHEMISTRY
“Everything is made up of something.” Perhaps a silly quote, but we are very serious about quantifying that “something”
accurately. Why? Because even minute changes in composition can have drastic and consequential effects. .2% carbon in an alloy
steel can mean the difference between a bolt that is capable of carrying its load and one that is not. Three parts per billion of
certain insecticides in your drinking water may be the difference between a life sustaining fluid and a one that can cause cancer.
At Modern Laboratories, our scientists and technicians have access to a substantial array of instrumentation and equipment
that offer an uncommon breadth of testing capabilities. Listed below is a representative list of the equipment, procedures and
matrices offered.

TESTING CAPABILITIES: MICROSCOPY/MICROANALYSIS
Microscopy is an essential analytical technique used in almost every branch of science. In the life
sciences (biology-microbiology), it is used to identify and count organisms such as mold or bacteria.
Light optical and electron microscopes are employed by materials scientists to classify structures, identify inclusions, and
determine the root cause of failures. Industrial Hygiene analysts use microscopy to detect and quantify the presence of asbestos
fibers and to characterize airborne particulates. Modern Laboratories extensive microscopy facilities serve the analytical needs
of customers in all these fields, and a lot more!

TESTING CAPABILITIES: NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
In literature it is often the fatal character flaw, or the “tragic flaw”, that brings down the hero of the story. Many times the flaw
remains undetected by the hero until it is too late to correct. Non-Destructive Testing is used to detect flaws in metallic parts
that may cause tragic results if not uncovered before the part is placed into service. Modern Laboratories’ staff of qualified
technicians are certified to perform critical inspections to a wide a spectrum of codes and testing procedures. ASNT Level II
technicians perform the inspections and a Level III is available for method development.
TESTING CAPABILITIES
Modern Laboratories offers the following testing procedures to produce numerous industry-standard and specialized
non-destructive testing and analyses for a diverse range of metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites:

QUALITY
The goal of Modern Laboratories is to provide each customer with the best experience possible.
Almost all providers list it as one of their “differentiators” and all customers deem it as a given. As long as the accreditation and
certifications are up-to-date, your supplier must be a quality provider, right? At Modern Laboratories, we think quality goes a lot
further than just the certificate on the wall. Sure, we have those too but we believe our customers need and appreciate a more
in-depth analysis of their products. We provide a complete, comprehensive testing environment to ensure the highest quality
review possible.
Modern Laboratories sets itself apart from other labs by incorporating multiple layers of quality oversight.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL
“Thanks so much for helping out with the inclusion analysis today. Our customer, in England, is feeling very frustrated and is trying to pull as much information out about our recent failure investigation as possible.
It is very rare to find the help and courtesy that you have shown in helping to arrange the SEM analysis and feedback of the samples that we looked at today for our customer.
As usual, when things get hectic, customers do get impatient, and I’m glad we could get the samples analyzed in a timely fashion with results in hand to share within our group here at Alliance. It really goes a long way!!”
