ClaytonDrive time: 20 km, approx. 25 minutes

Clayton is the largest of Monash’s campuses. It combines a vibrant research, technology and manufacturing precinct with first-rate sporting facilities, shops, a student centre, libraries, a post office, banks, medical services and religious centres. The campus can be reached by public transport utilising an extensive bus network combined with train stations in surrounding suburbs.

Caulfield

Drive time: 9 km, approx. 20 minutes

Caulfield is the second-largest Monash campus, with about 13,000 students. It’s the main centre for the faculties of Business and Economics, Art Design & Architecture, and Information Technology. Caulfield is nine kilometres from the Melbourne city centre and adjacent to Caulfield train station. The campus has a gym, library and cafes, and is close to several shopping precincts.

BerwickDrive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes

Berwick is a small, friendly campus with about 2000 students approximately 40 minutes south-east of Melbourne. It’s a five-minute walk from the heart of Berwick’s specialty shops, cafes and business services.

ParkvilleDrive time: 3 km, approx. 10 minutes

Located three kilometres north of Melbourne’s city centre, the Parkville campus houses the faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, with first-class teaching facilities, innovative learning spaces and research laboratories. The campus is home to the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety and the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which comprises the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia.

PeninsulaDrive time: 40 km, approx. 40 minutes

The Peninsula campus is about 40 minutes south of Melbourne. It is a centre for nursing and paramedic training, early years education, primary education and health and physical education, and is also being developed as a centre for health science research. There is a bus connection to frankston train station, and a free shuttle bus runs between Peninsula and Clayton campuses.

All postgraduate law courses are taught at the Monash University Law Chambers, located in the heart of the city’s legal precinct at 555 Lonsdale Street within walking distance of the Magistrates’, County and Supreme Courts. The Law Chamber provides independent student study areas and amenities conducive to creative and independent learning.

The Monash Warwick Alliance

In 2012, Monash partnered with the University of Warwick (UK) to form a unique global alliance. This partnership raises our international profile and provides unparalleled access to new opportunities and benefits to our students.

The Alliance aims to deliver a seamless international experience for students, offering innovative academic programs as well as opportunities for real and virtual student exchanges. We offer a joint PhD program in which both institutions are the ‘home’ institution, as well as joint and dual master’s programs that combine the distinctive strengths of each university.

Our research

Super sand acts as an inexpensive filtration device in third-world countries.

Our research tradition Even before we became the global university we are today, our researchers looked beyond traditional boundaries, creating new frontiers and discovering new ways of approaching the fields in which they worked. That’s why a Monash education is respected around the world. Things that we now take for granted would not exist without the initial work of Monash researchers:

First in-vitro fertilisation pregnancy

Professors Alan Trounson and Carl Wood achieved the world’s first IVf pregnancy in 1973. The Trounson and Wood team went on to achieve Australia’s first (and the world’s fourth) successful IVf birth in 1980.

Fighting influenza

In 1986, a team from our faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (formerly the Victorian College of Pharmacy) designed and synthesised the anti-flu drug Relenza. Relenza first became available in Australia in 1999 and is now used globally.

Nobel Peace Prize

In 2007, eight scientists from Monash University shared in the prestige of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded jointly to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and former US Vice-President Al Gore.

Brendan MurrayMaster of Education, 2010

Brendan is the Executive Principal of Parkville College – a Victorian Government School established to provide quality education for all young people detained in custody.

Deeply embedded in his community, Brendan is also the co-founder and former principal of the Pavilion School – a Victorian Government school that seeks to provide the highest standard of public education for adolescents who are disengaged from education. He was awarded the Victorian Outstanding Secondary Teacher Award in 2009 as well as the inaugural Australian federal Government Closing the Gap Award. Brendan now intends to pursue a PhD at Monash University.

Dr Michelle McIntoshBachelor of Pharmacy, 1997; Phd, 2000; Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, 2009

Michelle leads a team at Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences working on a project to develop an aerosol delivery system for oxytocin that can be inhaled by patients from a simple, disposable device immediately after childbirth. Every year more than 100,000 women die of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), a condition of excessive blood loss after childbirth.

Although PPH can be effectively prevented or treated with an injection of oxytocin, access to this drug is limited due to the requirements for refrigeration, storage and trained medical personnel for administration.

Rameshwari RamachandraMaster of Business Administration, 1993

As managing director of Singapore-based consulting firm Business Breakthrough Technology Pte Ltd Rameshwari manages the operations and expansion of consulting initiatives and blue-chip clientele in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines.

She is passionate about the role of women in decision-making and is involved with organisations including the Development of Economy for Women, DEW Credit Co-operative Ltd, Singapore National Co-operative federation, Netball Singapore and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organizations.

Building stronger, lighter planes

Professor Xinhua Wu and her team at the Monash Centre for Additive Manufacturing (MCAM) are creating a new aluminium alloy that will make aircraft 30 to 40 per cent lighter, twice as fuel efficient and still structurally sound. So significant is this project that they are working in close partnership with Microturbo, the European Space Agency and Bombardier.

Helping the blind to see

The Monash Vision Group (MVG) draws on the capabilities of Monash University, The Alfred hospital and industry partners MinifAB and Grey Innovation to develop bionic eye technology that connects to the primary visual cortex.

This means that patients unable to make use of current retinal implants because of damaged optic nerves or physical trauma to the actual eyes may now have the opportunity to see again.

Super sand

Monash has teamed up with Rice University (USA) to create a ‘super sand’, which acts as an inexpensive filtration device in third-world countries. They have significantly enhanced the natural filtering properties of sand by coating it with a nanomaterial called graphite oxide (GO). Lack of clean drinking water is the cause of more than 2.5 million deaths per year according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Eliminating disease

The Eliminate Dengue Program, led by Monash University’s Professor Scott O’Neill, uses a naturally occurring bacteria (Wolbachia) to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to pass dengue between people. Dengue fever affects an estimated 390 million people worldwide annually and is ranked by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most important mosquito-borne viral disease in the world.

As well as a long and distinguished military career, Sir John was a renowned engineer and public administrator. He also features on the Australian $100 note.

Your study optionsWhether you want to get ahead in your career faster, or improve your knowledge, a Monash postgraduate degree can give you a distinct advantage.

Professional entry master’s degreesThese courses are specifically designed to qualify you to enter regulated professions such as law, accounting and teaching after you have completed an undergraduate degree. These programs can range from two to four years depending on the discipline.

Expert master’s degreesThese programs allow you to either extend knowledge and expertise gained though your undergraduate degree or add breadth and inter-disciplinarity to your knowledge and skills in a new field.

Research master’s degrees and PhDsMonash offers research-based postgraduate degrees in all disciplines. And, while the challenge takes commitment, drive, motivation and talent, the benefits are enormous.

Length of programsMany of our master’s programs offer block credit to students on the basis of their education background.

2 year programs – if you wish to undertake a master’s program in a different discipline to your three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually take two years (96 credit points).

1.5 year programs – if you wish to undertake a master’s program in the same discipline as your three-year undergraduate qualification it will usually be a 1.5 year program (72 credit points).

1 year programs – if you wish to study a master’s in the same discipline for which you have a four-year honours qualification it usually takes one year (48 credit points).

Study modesWe understand that postgraduate students have many priorities and commitments. That’s why we offer flexible study modes to allow you to build your study around your life.

Most courses are offered in both full-time and part-time study modes. Some units are offered in intensive block mode (usually Thursday to Sunday) allowing you to arrange a short break from work to complete a unit. It’s what works best for you.

Off-campus (Distance learning)You don’t have to be at Monash to study with Monash. Through our online distance learning, you can study with Australia’s biggest and best-known university without ever having to set foot on campus. It’s the perfect option if you need to balance university with work, family and other personal commitments. You’ll study the same units and gain the same qualification as you would if you were on campus.

It includes a combination of print study material and electronic communication. You are not restricted to studying only off-campus. You may enrol in both on and off-campus units or change from one to another.

Scarlett LuceroIn 2007 Scarlett Lucero decided to further her qualifications with a Master of Education to develop her capabilities in educational policy, change and leadership. She completed her master’s course in 18 months without leaving her home in South Australia.

“I always believed that email and telephone communication were secondary to face-to-face contact; however, my experience with Monash was incredibly rewarding,” she said. “The quality of education was fantastic — it challenged, encouraged and motivated me to think outside the square.”

New Horizons aims to transform manufacturing in areas such as biomedicine, transport, aerospace and mineral processing. it brings together around 400 staff from Monash and Csiro, supported by platforms for global research and teaching collaboration through state-of-the-art iCt and will facilitate greater linkages with business and the community.

FeesMost postgraduate coursework programs are offered as full-fee places. Students in these courses pay the full tuition cost of the course and must make the payment upfront each semester. Details of course fees are included with course descriptions in this guide.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs)A CSP (formerly known as a HECS place) is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding towards the cost of your higher education. Postgraduate CSPs are limited in number and selection is highly competitive. Eligibility is assessed on academic merit and offered subject to availability.

for CSPs, units are grouped into three broad bands. The band in which the unit is located determines the student contribution amount for that unit. Usually, the units a student is required to enrol in to complete their course will all fall into the same band.

The table outlines the annual student contribution amount for a full-time student who is enrolled in a standard full-time course where all units are in the same band. In a standard full-time year, students typically study 48 credit points.

Research Training Scheme (RTS)Under this scheme, research students may be eligible to receive two full-time equivalent years of funding for a research master’s course and four years of full-time equivalent funding for doctoral studies. See page 74 of this guide for details.

Master of Fine ArtThis practice-based research degree involves the independent investigation of a research problem that has been formulated by the candidate. We have over 500 academics who are active researchers in over 100 different areas. Our areas of research strength include: Cultural Heritage; Environmental Sustainability; Interpreting Cultures; Philosophy and Bioethics; Social and Cultural Theory; Global Change and Global Security; Health, Wellbeing and Social Change; and Performance.

The principal component of the PhD is a major thesis of up to 100,000 words, embodying the results of a research project. Coursework and training will be a component of the PhD, in all of the disciplines across the faculty.

Our PhD program enables you to complete independent research under the supervision of expert academics. Candidates are supported by a minimum of two supervisors throughout their candidature. The research will culminate in a written thesis which offers a significant contribution to knowledge in your discipline.

The Monash PhD is one of Australia’s first PhDs with career enhancement built into the doctorate. It’s a PhD that will prepare you for work beyond your degree. The Monash PhD includes at least three months of professional development coursework and/or training in addition to a thesis.

The Master of Counselling is a skill-based course suited to professional people with an interest in counselling. Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental)This course prepares graduates to practise as educational and developmental psychologists in schools, hospitals, clinics, private practices and health-oriented facilities. Educational and developmental psychologists focus on how people develop and learn throughout their lifetime. They work in many different settings with individuals, families, groups and organisations. They also have varying titles such as school psychologist, guidance officer, and child and adolescent counsellor. The reality of this expanding field is that it reaches far beyond environmental matters to influence every area of life. That is why our brand-new, interdisciplinary course is designed for individuals who want to help bring about change within an organisation, workplace or community. Learn to lead, design learning, develop policy and advocate for sustainable change.

This is an online course designed for teachers, policy makers and professionals whose work is oriented towards education for sustainable development. Designed with flexibility for working professionals, students can start in any one of six entrance times per year. The total number of units required varies depending on the individual’s education background and related work experience. Doctor of PhilosophyInformation Technology research at Monash has a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus and multi-national approach, providing research students with a unique capacity to reach out further and deeper than at any other institution in Australia.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a supervised program designed to allow a student to conceptualise and implement a major research project on a topic of personal interest. The degree is awarded for a thesis which, in the opinion of the examiners, makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the discipline concerned and demonstrates the candidate’s capacity to carry out independent research. Benn completed his Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging degree at Monash in 2012 and through his current role as a radiographer at Stawell Regional Hospital is undertaking the Master of Medical Ultrasound by distance education.

Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVf, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVf patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVf laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research application proceduresApplying for a research degree at Monash University has never been easier. Our research degree application website at monash.edu/migr/apply will provide you with everything you need to know about academic entry and English eligibility requirements, finding a supervisor, scholarships available for research degree candidates, and the online form which you should use to submit your application. To begin the process of becoming a postgraduate researcher, prospective candidates need to think about possible research projects and topics that align with their interests, qualifications and experience.

You will be required to submit a research proposal as part of your application and should start developing this as soon as you have some idea of your research topic. The type of information that should be included in an initial proposal includes:

2. What has motivated your interest in this particular area?

3. What field or fields of knowledge does it engage?

4. What are the key questions to be explored?

5. What are the aims of the project?

6. What works or materials will be involved?

Applicants are eligible to be considered for admission to a research degree once they have been assessed to meet the University’s academic and English language entry requirements and any other requirements of the chosen course. Minimum academic requirements for entry into individual higher degrees by research are listed in the faculty section of this guide. Some research courses (for example, professional doctorates) have additional entry requirements, while some research master’s courses have different entry pathways.

Evidence of research ability, the availability of facilities in their proposed field of research and the availability of staff to undertake supervision will also be considered in the assessment of your application. Postgraduate courses attract fees for both domestic and international students. However, there are a range of schemes and services to help students with fees, including government loan programs. Student contribution amountsfor CSPs, units are grouped into three broad bands. The band in which the unit is located determines the student contribution amount for that unit. Usually, the units a student is required to enrol in to complete their course will each fall into the same band. The table outlines the annual student contribution amount for a full-time student who is enrolled in a standard full-time course where all units are in the same band. In a standard full-time year, students typically study 48 credit points.

Research Training Scheme (RTS)Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents undertaking a research degree at Monash University are granted a government-funded Research Training Scheme (RTS) place. Under this scheme, research students receive two full-time equivalent years of funding for a research master’s course and four years of full-time equivalent funding for doctoral studies. Under the RTS, it is a statutory requirement that all higher degree by research students provide details of previous enrolments in research programs to determine eligibility for RTS funding.

Higher Education Loan Program (HELP)The fEE-HELP scheme provides an interest-free, income-contingent loan facility for students. Australian citizens and holders of a permanent humanitarian visa are eligible for the fEE-HELP scheme. Eligible students wishing to fund part or all of their tuition fees through fEE-HELP must complete the loan request form by the relevant census date and provide a tax file number. A student can elect to pay a portion of fees directly to the University and the remaining debt will be registered as a loan through the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Students will commence repaying any HELP loan through the ATO once their income reaches the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. A loan for up to the full tuition fee charged for the course can be accessed, but there is a lifetime limit. Full-fee placesMost postgraduate coursework programs are offered as full-fee places. Students in these courses pay the full tuition cost of the course and must make the payment upfront each semester. Details of course fees for Australian citizens and permanent residents are included with course descriptions in this guide. fees quoted are for courses commencing in 2014, are subject to change and are indicative only. fees for courses commencing in 2015 will be different. Monash University reserves the right to adjust annual tuition fees. However, the University undertakes that any adjustment factor for those continuing students will not exceed 6 per cent per annum. Any adjustment will be applied on 1 January each year for that year.

Credit points and feesThe University uses a standard credit point range in relation to university-taught unit offerings, normally involving six-point units or multiples thereof (e.g. 6, 12, 18, 24). A full-time student will normally complete 48 credit points in a year (24 in each semester). fees published in this guide quote an annual fee based on a standard 48 credit point course. Courses with fewer or more credit point values in a year will attract a proportionate fee. for example, a 24 credit point course fee will be half the annual amount of a 48 credit point course. A 72 credit point course would be one and a half times the published annual fee.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)Postgraduate CSPs are limited in number and selection is highly competitive. Eligibility is assessed on academic merit and offered subject to availability. The Australian Government requires the majority of students in a Commonwealth Supported Place to contribute to the cost of their education. Research



The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD candidature are: (a) a bachelor’s degree requiring at least four years of full-time study and normally including a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours degree at first or upper second class level (H1 or H2A); or (b) a course leading to a master’s preliminary qualification at a level rated by the relevant school and faculty as equivalent to a first or upper second class honours degree; or (c) a master’s degree that comprises a significant research component, at least equivalent to (a) above.



The minimum requirements for admission to MPhil candidature are: (i) a bachelor’s degree with honours at first or upper second class level (H1 or H2A); or (ii) qualifications that in the opinion of the Monash Research Graduate School (MRGS) are equivalent or a satisfactory substitute. Prospective research candidates are expected to have identified a certain research area of interest prior to applying. They are required to discuss the proposed research project, as well as availability of supervision and facility to conduct research, with the school in which they are seeking candidature.
