GREETINGS FROM THE WEST

It has been a great year for Montgomery. June means one thing, things tend to wind down and as we get ready to go dark, we elect our new officers for the upcoming year, have installation and look forward to our summer picnic. There are 3 events left for our lodge year. Our Annual Meeting will be held on June 18, 2015. The grill fires up at 5:00 PM, with food served at 6:00 PM. This is a dress casual meeting, the food will be great we have the best chef at the grill and the money raised will go to the almoner’s fund. Don’t forget, please RSVP for this meal, we want to make sure everyone in attendance has something to eat Our officer install will take place on Saturday June 27, 2015. Our Grand Master will be the installing officer, this is an officer install you do not want to miss. There should be more details about this in the newsletter. The Annual Picnic will be on Thursday July 16, 2015. Food will be served around 6 PM. Please bring a dish to share. The grill will be firing up around 5 PM at the park. This is at Lake Phalen in the Pavilion. We have the pavilion until 9 PM, so please bring a game to share and let’s get some use out of the park rental.

3 Reasons to attend lodge: The Dinner … The Work … The Fellowship

FROM THE SOUTH

WB Skoog is doing better. At the Pancake breakfast, we had participation, from St Paul Police K9 and Caribou. One of our new candidates came down to help out. It’s nice to see candidates that have not gone through the degrees have such a willingness to help, we need to thank them and hope we get more of them. We are moving in a great direction

Bro. Chris Elmquist Junior Warden

A Long time between degrees

A little before Lodge is about to open an old man totters up to the Tyler and says, "I'm here to receive my 2nd degree." Well, they all look at this guy, who really is older than dirt, and they ask him to explain. "I was entered on July 4, 1922. Now I'm ready for my 2nd degree." So they go scurrying for the records, and sure enough, there was his name, entered on July 4, 1922. "Where have you been all these years? What took you so long to be ready for your 2nd?" they ask. Reply: "Learning to subdue my passions!"

Any road followed precisely to its end leads precisely nowhere. Climb the mountain just a little bit to test it's a mountain. From the top of the mountain, you cannot see the mountain. -- Frank Herbert

FROM THE EAST Continued from page 1

with everyone working together to accomplish the goals. Over the last year, the Lodge has been involved in two degree cycles raising 4 new Brothers, held two pancake breakfast fundraisers with KIDS ID, increased attendance at our schools of instruction, and visited other Lodges resulting in one visitation where we were able to capture Templar’s Flag. We had dinners before meetings, held a table lodge to honor the Grand Master and added more education to our meetings so that our membership could improve themselves. Education topics ranged from learning about parts of the Code, to learning about what an elevator speech is (do you have an elevator speech), to a presentation about Humpty Dumpty and how the history of Humpty Dumpty can be compared to Leo Taxil, and a number of other areas. As the last month is upon us we have two events that I hope you will put on your calendar and come down to the Lodge for. Our Annual Meeting and Elections will be on June 18th. It is a bar b q fundraiser for the Almoner’s Fund. This is a great time for fellowship, while having a great dinner. We will be closing the Lodge of Sorrow and having elections for the officers for the ensuing year. The second event is the Installation of officers at the St. Paul Masonic center on June 27th at 10am followed by a light lunch. Support the Master and Officers for the 2015-2016 year by being on the sidelines during the installation. Fraternally, Shawn Carrick, Master Photo from our awards dinner

The Symbolic Teachings of a Mechanical Pocket Watch By Shawn Carrick

Masons are taught many different lessons throughout the three degrees of Masonry. Not only when we experienced them as a candidate, but also as we provide the degrees to the new Brothers and as we sit on the sideline. There are many items that are used to impress the lessons of Masonry upon our consciousness. One item that is not used to impress the lessons in our work but that I have embraced because of the lesson I believe it will teach, is the mechanical pocket watch.

Recently a Brother shared his newly acquired Dudley Masonic pocket watch, and I started to think about all the numerous and intricate gears and springs, their movements dependent on each other and the many other parts of a pocket watch which must occur together in unison for the dial to be able to provide the correct time.

Looking at the diagram, we see all of the gears, springs and other smaller parts working in unison. Each dependent on the other, no matter how large or small the part is. You may be asking what lesson might be taught to us from this simple and useful tool.

I believe that the pocket watch is emblematical of the Masonic Lodge, each part of the pocket watch contained within the walls of its case representing the membership of the Lodge. Just as the pocket watch has the numerous and unique parts working together, so a Lodge has its numerous members each one unique from each other yet working together to improve each other. This view is not to say that everyone has to be actively engaged in the lodge, as are the gears and springs of a pocket watch.

Another part of the watch that we can relate back to the Lodge is the different plates contained within the case of the watch that support the gears and springs. These plates also are emblematical of the members of the Lodge, those that are not actively involved with the workings of the Lodge at every meeting and event but are active in the background not always completely seen but providing the needed support and encouragement for the lodge and the membership to be able to function successfully.

A successful Lodge is one that is able to reach its goals with each member of the Lodge working together in unison, combining those that are active and those that are being supportive, like that of a properly working pocket watch to ensure that the work is completed. I hope you will look at this useful and valuable tool and let it impact your consciousness as you consider how your Lodge is or is not similar to that of a proper working mechanical pocket watch.

Humor for the Lodge Bob and Bill were brother masons and great friends for most of their lives. Each had agreed that when one of them passed on to that Grand Lodge above, he would attempt to make contact with the other and tell him all about what heaven was like. As so happened, Bill went to heaven, first. One night Bob was just drifting off to sleep when he heard Bill's voice calling to him. "Is that you, Bill? "Yes, Bob. I am honoring our agreement." "Oh, MY,.... what's it like?" Bob asked with some anticipation. "It's like nothing you could ever imagine. The lodge here is fantastic,... better than any lodge we ever saw on Earth. The meetings are always well attended, the ritual is letter perfect, the friendship nights always have tons of new people just itching to join, and the spirit of fellowship blankets the entire place." Bob's eyes teared up. "Oh, my, it's just like we'd hoped. I'm so happy for you. But I have to ask,... that sounds really great, but you didn't really seem all that excited. What's wrong?" "Well, I have some good news and some bad. The good news is that we're raising a fellow to the third degree next Wednesday." "That's fantastic. What's the bad news?" "Your name is on the list to be the Senior Deacon."

From the Treasurer: My daughter cut some May flowers from our garden and along with the lovely Lilac blooms from bushes on the side of our house, made an impressive floral arrangement to adorn our table on Mother’s Day. As lovely as it was and as happy as it made her mother, it wasn't long before the ones in the vase withered, while the ones still on the bushes outside the kitchen window still flourished and even when past their season will bloom again and again.

Flowers make it abundantly clear that visible splendor is temporary and even more fleeting when you separate them from their roots. That makes them a good metaphor for what can happen to a mason that severs his ties to his lodge, our root tenants, and perhaps even his brothers.

We all took the same oaths that made us Masons. They can not be set aside yet there are 5 Montgomery brothers who are delinquent and another 16 who are behind in their dues. A strong argument could be made for that being a form of setting aside obligations and certain responsibilities. To my knowledge there are no hardships and none have contacted an officer. All who take their oaths are warned of a perilous journey and cutting the stem that connects us to our roots has a known outcome. Perhaps that is the most perilous of all, but it is the easiest to avoid.

If you don't have your dues card because you haven't paid, and you are able, then send your check today. If you need help due to unforeseen circumstances contact an officer and very discreetly something can be worked out. If for any other reasons you aren't current, the best thing you can do for your lodge and yourself is to reach out to one of the officers so we can inform you of your best option given your circumstance: some choices have per capita costs to the lodge and others do not. Some leave the brother with a much greater financial obligation should he apply for reinstatement at a later time.

As the officers discuss next year's budget it is helpful to have a predictable income from dues. It is most predictable when every brother is current.

I hope everyone is enjoying the gardens in bloom. They sure beat the snow!

The single place setting from our Awards night dinner This empty seat is our way of representing those good Brothers that have gone before us. It is draped in white to signify the purity of their intentions in taking up our working tools. The rose represents the love of those he left behind. The slice of lemon indicates the bitterness of our loss. The salt is symbolic of the tears shed by those who mourn. The chair is empty for he is not here. Let us pause in remembrance of our departed Brethren.
