Moreton Morrell C of E Primary School Dear Parents and Carers, In light of the recent school closure we are trying to ensure that your child is able to access learning activities during this period of absence from school. Staff have tried to ensure that there is a Literacy and Numeracy activity each day. In addition to this, another activity has been included that is based around the learning that your child would have been doing if there were in the classroom. Your child will have been issued with a school ‘Learning Journal’ where they are able to record their work over this period. We understand that these are unusual circumstances and realise that ‘learning’ takes many different forms. Therefore, if your child has undertaken activities such as cooking to support their learning in maths (measuring) or has produced a piece of artwork; please include photographs into their Learning Journals so that we can celebrate the diverse range of their learning experiences that the children have had during this time. • Then go through the slides on the worksheet page and use counting objects to complete the activities.

SSM Task: Patterns in the environment

• Last week we looked for 2D & 3D shapes in the environment. Now we are going to think about what patterns we can see around us.

• Look at the ‘patterns in nature’ picture sheet to try and guess where they came from.

• Go on a pattern hunt inside and outside to find any patterns in your environment.

• Take pictures of what you see to create a pattern collage.

Phonics Task: ai sound & tricky words

• Recap all phase 2 & 3 tricky words as flash cards. Can be found in resources if haven’t been printed.

• Watch ‘Jolly Phonics ai sound’ video lesson in resources to recap the ai sound.

Reading Task: CVC word blending Practice reading and recognising CVC words using the ‘CVC colour the word’ worksheet in resources. Look at the picture, say the word then read both words underneath. Choose the correct work to match the picture. Literacy Task: ‘Me and my Place in Space’ Story Watch and listen to the eBook of Me and my Place in Space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3J-HHD7ggQ After the story have a discussion with an adult or someone you read it with about what happened and your favourite parts. Look at the vocabulary words at the end of the story and discuss their meaning.

We are going to practice writing a sentence about the moon on page 2 of the ‘Space sentence writing’ booklet in resources. The question is: What is in space that you can also see at night from Earth? Choose the right answer and copy the sentence underneath.

Music Task: Space musical adventure

• Listen to the music ‘Opening Theme C by Kevin Macleod’, this music is going to help us to move around as if we are the astronauts getting ready for our space trip.

• How does it make you feel, how it makes you want to move, what does it make you think about?

• Here are some ideas of the movements that we could make as we are getting ready for space… - Approaching the space ship and climbing in. - Putting on space suit and helmet. - Sitting in seat, fastening harness and beginning to push

buttons and levers on instrument panel.

• Talk about making movements match the music. The astronauts will be excited but we shouldn’t rush the movements we are making and should listen carefully to the music

• This time the spaceship is going to launch into space. Listen to the ‘NASA SLS test fire audio’ and practice moving in a way the astronauts would as they launched. This could be…moving the joystick, pressing buttons, shaking and moving with the space ship

• Put together a final performance which includes all of the movements and both sound tracks to show a Space Musical adventure!

Literacy Task: Design a planet Pluto was named as a planet in 1930 before he was removed in 2016. But if you could name a planet what would it be called? What would it look like? Draw a picture of your planet using the ‘design a planet’ sheet and add labels to describe what it looks like.

Science Task: Orbiting planets

• We have written down the planets in order and even sung a song about them. But why are they in an order?

• Watch this video to discuss what the word ‘orbit’ means and find out more facts about the solar system.

• Orbit is the journey the planets make around the sun, as some planets are further away they make longer journeys than earth.

• The earth moves two ways. It spins and it moves around the sun. The spinning of the earth is called rotation. It takes the earth one day, to make one complete rotation. At the same time, the earth is moving around the sun. This is called a revolution. It takes one year, for the earth to make one full revolution around the sun.

• To help you think about the journey the earth takes around the sun have a go at this science activity.

• Use orange/yellow play dough to make the sun, a blue ball

to represent the Earth and a circle tin to create the orbit.

• Put the sun in the centre of the tin and the earth on the outside.

• Carefully roll the tin so the earth rotates around the sun. Notice how the earth is also turning as it rotates.

• Practice reading and writing CVC words using the ‘CVC read, write and colour’ worksheet in resources. Read the words by sounding them out, write the word out again and then colour the picture that shows the word.

Writing Task: Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check Choose 5 CVC word from the reading activity sheets this week and write down the side of the sheet. Practice reading and then writing the word. Look at the word, say it, cover it up and sound it out, write the word as you sound it. Uncover the word to check. Repeat for the next word. (See resources for a Look, say, cover, write, check worksheet)

Outdoor Learning Task: Moving shadow

• This week we have learnt that our planet is moving. It is moving around the sun and also turning at the same time.

• We can’t feel or see the earth moving so how do we know?

• Watch this video to find out how we can tell the earth is moving.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd5WRAgl1cQ

• Shadows are made from the sun and move in the day as the earth turns.

• To see how this works we can follow our shadow all day and see how it moves.

• Start off early in the morning to get your first shadow picture.

• Draw an x and stand on the x facing away from the sun. Ask another person to draw around your shadow and write the time above it.

• Repeat this throughout the day, in the morning, midday and afternoon.

• See how your shadow moves as the earth moves around the sun!
