In our home, traditions are a big thing. Traditionally the laundry is never done. Traditionally the children rebel against chores. Traditionally the mommy craves dinner that doesn’t start with chicken and end with nuggets. Okay, those aren’t technically “traditions.” Those are just me expressing some discontentment with normal routines. But complaints aside, there are certainly traditions in our home. This weekend we celebrate our oldest son’s birthday. One of the traditions that developed in the last few years is the birthday trip to Build-A-Bear for the birthday kid. Our children instituted this tradition and they aren’t too keen on letting us forget it! This means that at some point in the midst of a busy weekend, we will take Dean to the mall and he will make yet another stuffed animal that wears clothes and shoes that will promptly get lost in the clutter of his room. Traditions. They develop sometimes by accident, sometimes out of necessity, but they almost always become a positive reminder or memory. As we quickly approach the holiday season we will embark on participating in the traditions of our family, community or church. We will embrace the busiest season of the year with smiles and activity as we attempt to check all the traditions off of our holiday list. Traditions, in and of themselves, are not bad. In fact, as I mentioned they become a source of joy and we often recall memories that surround a particular tradition. However, traditions can sometimes hinder us from truly enjoying the beauty of a moment. We become fixated on doing it the way we have done it before. We miss the opportunity to enjoy the moment in all of its presence. There’s a popular song on Christian radio entitled “Motions” by Matthew West that says, “I don’t wanna go through the motions. I don’t wanna go one more day, without your all consuming passion inside of me. I don’t wanna spend my whole life asking what if I had given everything, instead of going through the motions.” This song is always a reminder to me that me that it’s easy to just go through the motions whether it is a daily routine or a traditional event. The danger is when we cease to experience the presence of an Almighty God because we are simply going through the motions. As the preparations begin for the turkey and then the tree, I caution you; don’t just go through the motions. But stop and take a moment to reflect on each day, each moment, each tradition. Find the blessing, find the joy, find your Heavenly Father in the midst of the traditions. The New Beginnings and Branches of the Vine Sunday School

Classes will sponsor the next 5th Sunday Assembly on

Sunday, December 29th.

We have arranged for a speaker from the Make-A-Wish Foundation

to speak during the Sunday School hour. We are planning to

sponsor a wish for a child who has a life threatening illness or

disease.

Immediately following the presentation, the New Beginnings and

Branches of the Vine classes will provide a spaghetti lunch. Lunch

will be served following the Assembly and following the

11AM worship service. Donations for Make-A-Wish will be

accepted during the lunch.

Thank you all for your encouraging donations thus far. We have al-

ready had donations of over $1,200. Our goal is $6,000.

We hope to be able to make a child’s wish possible soon!

With sincere thanks!
