Citroen DS3110 PureTechLaunched in 2010, the DS3 has recorded sales in
excess of 320,000 units to date. Updates for 2015
include a new six speed automatic transmission
coupled to the three cylinder PureTech 110 petrol
engine.
The new six speed automatic gearbox, gives
smoother faster changes, while the 110 PureTech
engine gives higher levels of torque at lower
engine speeds. Together they provide lower fuel
consumption and exhaust emissions with no loss
of performance. By EU testing standards this
combination has a Combined cycle fuel
consumption of 4.7 lt/100 km (60 mpg) with
exhaust emissions of 108 gm/km.
This new addition to the DS3 range is
scheduled to go on sale in Ireland in July with a
recommended retail price of €23,995.
VW Golf GTEThe Volkswagen Golf GTE is due to go on sale in
Ireland in July, priced from €38,495. The styling
is similar to that of the Golf GTI, but where the
GTI has red highlights, the GTE has blue.
Like all Hybrid models, the Golf GTE has a
combination of electric and internal combustion
engine power. The electric traction motor has a
power output of 75 kW and draws its energy
from a 8.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. It has an all
electric range of 50 km (31 miles) and can travel
at speeds of up to 130 kph (80 mph).
When battery recharging becomes necessary,
Citroen DS3
it can be charged in two hours and fifteen
minutes from a special domestic wall box, or
three hours and forty five minutes from a
domestic mains socket.
The internal combustion engine is a 1.4 litre
TSI petrol engine producing 110 kW. Working in
combination with the electric traction motor it
gives a theoretical range of 939 km (577 miles).
The combined power and torque offer a 0-100
kph acceleration time of 7.5 seconds, which is
similar to the performance of the GTD diesel
version.
Perhaps the most attractive feature of its
combined petrol/electric power is a theoretical
exhaust emissions of 39 gm/km and a Combined
cycle fuel consumption of 1.6 lt/100 km (176
mpg). The Golf GTE only comes in the five door
body style.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary,
Silverstone Classic will be holding an
event over the weekend starting on
Friday 24th July and extending to
Sunday 26th July.
The biggest celebration though,
will be the special Silver Jubilee
parade, one of the many highlights on
‘Super Sunday’, which will see
hundreds of silver cars taking to the
famous Silverstone Grand Prix track.
The spectacular parade is open to
everyone with a silver car, old or new
and has already attracted an amazing
array, ranging from a 1934 Austin
Seven Special, to the latest creations
from legendary marques such as Land
Rover and Aston Martin.
In between the silvery cavalcade
will feature a magical mix putting the
spotlight on at least nine decades of
automotive history. As you’d expect at
an event that showcases close to
10,000 privately owned classic cars,
the parade includes numerous iconic
models from esteemed brands, such as
Alfa Romeo, BMW, Caterham, Ginetta,
Jaguar, Lotus, Marcos, Mercedes, MG,
Porsche and TVR. However, the huge
gathering also comprises a sizeable
number of today’s mainstream models,
like Ford Fiestas, Honda Accords and
Vauxhall Astras, all united by their
sparkling silver bodywork and by
owners not only keen to join the
celebrations, but also to take full
advantage of this rare opportunity to
savour a memorable lap on
Silverstone’s hallowed asphalt.
Perhaps the anniversary parade’s
popularity is of no surprise: the Classic
is expecting its first 100,000
attendance in July and almost 25% of
all licensed cars in the UK are silver
coloured. The DVLA’s latest vehicle
statistics reveal that there are
7,250,300 silver cars on their roads,
more than 440,000 of those alone
being Mercedes models.
While the organisers are thrilled
both by the huge numbers and by the
notable variety of the striking silver
machines already entered into the
Silver Jubilee parade, it’s not too late
for others to grasp the opportunity. It
costs owners of silver cars just £25 on
top of general admission tickets, to be
part of this milestone occasion.
Moreover, they also benefit from
parking in a special infield ‘Silver Zone’
and receive a special 25th anniversary
car sticker.
Adult admission tickets for Sunday
are priced at £52 (or £77 for the Silver
Sunday ticket) and include booking
fees, access to paddocks, grandstands
and the vast majority of the numerous
attractions. All tickets, including those
for the Silver Sunday parade, must be
purchased in advance.

eauty is, of course, in the eye of thebeholder and in my eyes this latestMondeo is superb in its exteriordesign, from its large chrome platedgrille, through its flowing roofline withits panoramic glass roof, to its stylishrear end. Inside it just oozes luxury andcomfort, so much so that certainGerman brands will have to look totheir expensive laurels to compete
with this latest Ford Mondeo.The fact that it was finished in Ruby Red just made it all
the more attractive and appealing to me.The test car was fitted with the two litre, four cylinder,
diesel engine, driving the front wheels, through a six speedmanual gearbox. Automatic stop/start is fitted as standard. Itwas finished to the top level Titanium specification, butincluded a number of optional extras like the panoramic glassroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, leather upholsteryand trim, Parking Assist, inflatable rear seat belts and adaptiveLED headlamps.
The Titanium specification includes as standard, 17” tenspoke alloy wheels, front fog lamps, climate control, SYNC 2with 8” touch screen, heated windscreen, Lane Keeping Aid,traffic sign recognition, automatic lights and wipers,electrically operated folding rear view mirrors, front and rearparking sensors and a keyless start.
The Titanium specification is priced at €34,345, while theoptional extras fitted add €6,555 to the price, so the car astested had an overall price of €40,900, excluding delivery andassociated charges.
By EU testing standards, its Urban cycle fuel consumptionis 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km), Extra urban 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km)and Combined 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km), giving exhaustemissions of 115 gm/km, putting it in the current Irish road

controls are well laid out and easy to see whilst driving. Theinstrument binnacle has two large round dials and a wholevariety of digital information as well. The large round dialon the right is the speedometer. It has white lettering on ablack background with a blue needle indicating the speed.At the bottom the blue strip is the fuel level gauge and inwhite lettering above it, it indicates the distance to emptyat current levels of fuel consumption.
Above that there is a car with a circle alongside. Thecircle indicates the current speed limits for that stretch ofroad if you are exceeding that speed and the limits areposted up on the roadside.
The large dial on the left is the tachometer, which alsohas white lettering on a black background with a blueneedle. In the top section between 4,750 rpm and 6,000rpm, there is a red strip to draw your attention to the factthat you are in the upper limits of the engine’s performancein a particular gear.
At the bottom there is a curved strip for the enginetemperature, starting with blue and ending with a redindicator. Above that there is a digital indicator showingyour current fuel consumption and the average fuelconsumption.

suburban driving conditions. The driving position iscomfortable and the instruments easy to see. The carhandles well with good roadholding, helped no doubt bythe electrically, power assisted, rack and pinion steering.
One difficulty I experienced was when approachingjunctions where the traffic was light. On approaching thejunction I would drop into second gear then move slowlyup to the point where I could see traffic coming from theother direction. If there was nothing coming I wouldaccelerate onto the junction, but invariably the car wouldstall. I found that I needed to change down into first gearto prevent this happening. Looking at the overall gear ratiosthere is a big difference between first and second gear, sothe engine would be almost at idle in second gear in thissituation and hence the reason for its stalling. There wasnever a difficulty when I changed into first.
Top speed is said to be 215 kph (133 mph), but as thisis well above the national speed limits, I was not able tocheck this myself. Acceleration from 0-100 kph is 9.3seconds, giving the car a very satisfying performance in alldriving conditions.

Between the two large dials there is avariety of digital information showing thingslike the compass direction the car is pointingat, the total mileage recorder and otherinformation when that function is in use.
Selectors for a whole host of otherfunctions like the heated seats, heated steeringwheel, interior temperatures for the climatecontrol etc., are in the panel below thecentrally mounted 8” touch screen. The touchscreen indicates the temperatures selected,and a whole lot of other information that hasbeen selected.
There are buttons on the steering wheel forthe cruise control and the operations of yourmobile telephone when connected. The driver’sdoor armrest has controls for the four electricwindows and exterior rear view mirroradjustment. Lights are operated by the circularselector switch below the right hand ventilator,while the driver’s door has buttons for theoperation of the central locking. The outer sidesof both front seat cushions have buttons forselecting reach, height, lumbar support andbackrest angle.
The rear seat cushions are fixed, but thebackrest is divided 60/40 and can be foldeddown onto the seat cushion in order to increaseluggage space. The two outer positions arecomfortable and well shaped and in spite ofthe sloping roofline still offer adequateheadroom for passengers of average height.
The centre section has a harder flat cushion,with a folding armrest in the central section ofthe backrest. When opened the armrest offersa covered storage space and two cupholders.In the space vacated by the backrest there is ahatch that can be opened giving access to theluggage area and this can be especially usefulfor long items of luggage like fishing rods, skisand similar objects. Unfortunately due to theharder substance of the centre rear seatcushion, adults of average height sitting therewill find the headroom very reduced. It would,however, be perfectly adequate for childrenand perhaps even teenagers provided theywere not too tall.

The new Opel Corsa OPC is due to arrive in Ireland
sometime this month. It is powered by a 1.6 litre,
turbocharged petrol engine, that delivers 150 kW
and 245 Nm of torque. This gives the Corsa OPC a
top speed of 230 kph (142 mph) with 0-100
kph acceleration in 6.5 seconds.
Combined cycle fuel consumption is said to be
7.5 lt/100 km (37 mpg) with exhaust emissions
of 174 gm/km. Power is transmitted to the front
wheels through a six speed manual gearbox.
There is a two stage electronic stability
programme with traction control. In Competition
Mode the traction control is inactive, while in
Track Mode the ESP is fully deactivated.
The suspension has Frequency Selective
Damping designed to maintain body control at
high speeds, but give a smoother ride at lower
speeds. Standard fitment are Michelin 215/45 R
17 tyres. The ventilated front brake discs have a
diameter of 308 mm.
Opel are also offering a Performance package,
priced at €3,000, which has 18” diameter alloy
wheels, shod with Michelin Pilot Supersport
tyres, a limited slip differential, Brembo four
piston brakes and a more performance orientated
Frequency Selected Damping system.
Included in the standard equipment are: OPC
rear roof spoiler, OPC sports front grille and
airdam bumper, OPC side sills, OPC rear bumper
and diffuser, twin OPC exhaust pipes, LED
daytime running lights, Bi-Xenon headlamps, air
conditioning, cruise control, heated windscreen,
aluminium pedals and a flat bottomed, leather

premium DS line.
Citroen have long been renowned for their outstanding
diesel and THP petrol engines both in terms of performance
and running costs. The DS3 can be customised with a whole
range of technology including an MP3/CD player, cruise
control and LED running lights. However, the style options
that are available with this car really make it a popular
choice.
There is a wide and diverse range of exteriors to choose
from together with purchasers being able to select
contrasting roof and wing mirror colours. Also available are
alloy wheels and wheel caps.
The DS3 sits in the more expensive end of the market
but is hard to beat for style and performance.
SUZUKI SWIFT
An absolutely fantastic supermini, the Suzuki
manufactured Swift will match perfectly with the image
that most young male drivers want to create.
Despite being relatively compact it does have a
magnificent sporty look and the latest models have more
gadgetry than the previous range. Technology includes a
USB port, Bluetooth and a CD player and the style is
guaranteed to impress even the most discerning of peers.
With very economic running costs and a variety of
engine sizes to choose from, the Swift has great
performance and has attained the Euro NCAP maximum 5
stars for safety due to its ESP (Electronic Stability
Programme) which is standard across the range, anti-
whiplash front seats and additional safety kit.

The Citroen DS3 came onto the market in
2010 and since then has won many prestigious

The young male driver is likely to go for a car which is
both sporty and cool but this will depend on how much
money they or their parents have available and their
