Anew third generationof the SLK was ondisplay in Geneva. It

When Ford introduced the first C-Max some years ago, I remember being very favourably impressedwith the car. My only surprise was when, in answer to a question regarding the possibility of aseven seater, the company told us they had conducted extensive market research and that therewas no demand for a seven seater. We were all very surprised, as Opel with their pace-settingZafira, Renault with the Scenic, Volkswagen with the Touran, had all adopted the seven seat

strategy. Now at last Ford has attended to that deficiency in their C-Max model. They give you the option of thefive seater C-Max, or the seven seater Grand C-Max.

As far as I coulddetermine, only the two outerseats in the centre row, arefitted with ISOfix fittings forchild safety seats. Possiblythis doesn’t matter as theadditional seats are mainlyused for larger children,when running them and theirfriends around to activitieslike sporting events, dramagroups, dancing classes andextra activities of a similarnature.

For mom and dad, seatedup front, things are a lotmore luxurious andcomfortable. Their seats arespacious and comfortablewith a full range ofadjustments for reach heightand backrest angle. Thedriver can adjust the steering

A much smaller panelahead of the gearlever hasthe controls for the dualrange climate controlsystem. All these controls,both audio andheating/ventilating areclearly marked and easy tosee whilst driving. Theinstrument binnacle ahead ofthe driver is likewise easy tosee whilst driving. Theanalogue dials have blackfaces, white lettering withblue needles and redhighlights. The two largerdials are for the tachometer(left) and speedometer(right), whilst the two smaller

Thismay appear to be rathermodest for a car of this size,but it is more than adequatefor a modern family car,especially with youngchildren as passengers. If thevelocity is modest, its fuelconsumption is just what isneeded in a large, versatilefamily car. On the urbancycle it is credited with 48mpg (5.8 lt/100 km),improving to 64 mpg (4.4lt/100 km) on the extra urbancycle. This gives a combinedcycle average of 57 mpg (4.9lt/100 km). The Grand C-Maxis certainly not the leader ofthe pack in the seven seaterMPV field, when it comes toperformance and fueleconomy, but it is not awaybehind its main competitorseither.

Unlike some of itscompetitors, it does comewith a spare wheel, albeit aSpacesaver. While this ishandy for normal daily use, itis not much use if you aretowing a trailer or caravan.The Grand C-Max can towbraked trailers/caravans ofup to 1200 kg in weight.Unbraked trailers are limitedto a maximum weight of 750kg. Roof loads are limited to

75 kg. It comes equippedwith roof rails, which greatlyfacilitates the carrying of roofloads. While its seven seaterluggage capacity is minimal,when only five seats are inuse, it offers a useful 0.432cubic metres of space underthe roller blind tonneaucover. Using only two seatsand loading to the roof, itprovides 1.684 cubic metres
