Frank Keane Holdings has buckedthe trend that has seen over 100motor dealerships close over the
last three years by announcing the re-opening of Maxwell Motors and theemploying of 18 people. This followsthe purchase of the business, as agoing concern, from Grant Thornton,the receiver appointed by Ulster Bankand Lombard Finance.
Maxwell Motors in Blackrock,County Dublin, was first establishedin 1938 and has a long anddistinguished history in motorretailing. The business will trade as anon franchise retailer of premiumcars.

The Seat Altea is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Touran and it has access to the sameengines, transmissions and other mechanical components as the Volkswagen. However, it has its ownunique body and styling, with its own interior design, materials and finish. My test car was fitted with the1.6 litre, turbocharged, direct injection, diesel engine, plus automatic stop/start programming anddelivered its power to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. It provided seating
space for five adults, with a large and adaptable luggage capacity. It is thus a very competent family car.cater for the slow, crawling conditions. Infavourable conditions, you can glide along infourth or fifth, without difficulty. Overallexhaust emissions are 119 gm/km, so thisbig comfortable car still falls into Irish roadtax band A, with a current annual charge of€104. So it provides just what the familymotorist needs in these times, goodeconomy and low operating costs.
On the Urban cycle it is credited with 54mpg (5.2 lt/100 km) stretching to animpressive 68 mpg (4.1 lt/100 km) on theExtra urban cycle. This gives an average of62 mpg (4.5 lt/100 km) on the combinedcycle. However, to achieve these impressiveperformances, it has rather high widelyspaced gear ratios. This is no problem if thedriving conditions are favourable, but in theslow crawling suburban traffic encounteredin many Irish urban areas, it means you haveto trickle along in second or third gear, as theothers do not have the necessary torque to

When only two seats are needed,and the rear seats are folded flat, itoffers up to 1.605 cubic metres ofspace, so it is well able toaccommodate occasional needs likethe ability to carry items of householdor garden furniture.
In addition it has extra space undera removable floor for small items or formaximum space.
Finally it can also towtrailers/caravans of up to 1400 kg, or740 kg if they are not fitted withbrakes. It is thus a truly versatile andadaptable family car.
The only negative factor, from atowing point of view, is that it has aSpacesaver spare wheel, which is notreally suitable for the extra weightsassociated with towing.
Thus from an everyday point ofview, the Altea XL is a comfortable,spacious, practical, adaptable familycar. It is also comfortable and easy todrive. Its ride and roadholding are goodand the brakes seem well able to copewith all conditions.
The steering is light yet precise,with 3.0 turns from lock to lock. Thewheel itself adjusts for both reach andheight. Manoeuvring in tight spaces isgreatly facilitated by the excellentexterior rear view mirrors. The twofront seats are very comfortable andadjust for reach, height and backrestangle. The three rear seats are alsocomfortable.
As in most cars today, the centresection tends to be harder in thecushion than those on either side. Thetwo outer places are equipped withISOfix fittings for child safety seats.

Matching the speedometeron the left is a large circularbackground that houses thefuel level (left) and enginetemperature (right) gauges inits upper section. The lower
section has a rectangulardigital information panel thatshows information like, thetime, distance to empty, totaldistance odometer and tripdistance recorder.
Below the two centre airvents at the top of the centreconsole, there are controlsassociated with the airconditioning. Push buttons forthe heated rear window,internal air recirculation andthe on/off for the air-conditioning. Below that thethree circular dials look after,from left to right, temperatureselector, fan speed anddistribution; windscreen face,feet and windscreen plus feet.
The audio system is belowthese three round dials. Thehazard warning switch isahead of the gearlever, withtwo cupholders ahead of it.
There are additionalcontrols on the left hand armof the steering wheel for theaudio system and theBluetooth mobile telephonefacilities.
Over on the right of thefacia, under the circular airvent the is a round switch forthe lights with a roller adjusteralongside for the headlamplevelling. All controls areclearly marked, easy to seeand use whilst driving. This allhelps to contribute to therelaxed and effortless drivingpleasure.
