FMU 2013 Men’s Soccer Pre-Season Outlook

Patriot Soccer opens second season under Campbell

The Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will open its second season under head coach JohnCampbell when the Patriots entertain Mount Olive College on Thursday evening (Sept. 5) at 7 p.m.

In addition to being the season opener for the Patriot men, Thursday’s match will be the first RIOT Clubevent for FMU students and will be 2013 Magnet Schedule Giveaway Night. The contest will be webcast andtelevised live on Channel 11 of Florence’s Time Warner Cable system.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students with FMU faculty, staff, and students admitted free withidentification, and Swamp Fox Club season passes being honored.

Francis Marion leads the all-time series against Mount Olive 12-3, including a 2-1 overtime victory on theTrojans’ home field last season.

Campbell welcomes back 14 lettermen, including seven starters, from last season’s 5-9-2 squad. Five ofthat team’s losses were by a single goal. The second-year coach also welcomes in nine newcomers, includ-ing four freshmen and five transfers.

Leading the returnees are senior forwards Alex Blandin and Cody Farrier, the team’s top two scorers in2012, and senior defender Simon Nett, who twice last season earned Peach Belt Conference Defensive Playerof the Week honors. Blandin tallied five goals and three assists last year and owns career totals of 19 goalsand four assists in 52 matches. Farrier registered seven goals and one assist in his first season (2012) as aPatriot. Nett helped anchor a Patriot defense that allowed 10 fewer goals than in 2011.

“The squad has had a good attitude through preseason, they have worked hard, and developed a positiveteam culture,” Campbell said. “The returners have instilled in the newcomers what is expected of them, andthose freshmen and transfers have done a good job of falling in line.”

“Our strengths this season will be our defending, work rate, and team organization. I feel as though we aregood going forward (attacking) and should score goals. A deciding factor in regards to our success in 2013 willbe our team cohesion – can everyone put the team first and strive toward what is best for the program. Weneed everyone on that same page. Although we do have two team captains (Nett and sophomore midfielderPascal Magiera), we need everyone to be a leader. Whether a freshman or a senior, all of our team membersneed to strive toward that attribute.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Logan Fisher returns from last season. He started half of the matches and posteda 2.25 goals against average and a save percentage of .672. He will be challenged by a pair of incomingfreshmen: Nick Stover of Titusville, Fla., and Mike Warn of Delta, British Columbia, Canada.

Campbell will look to Nett to lead the defensive back line in front of the goal. “This is one area where wehave a lot of depth, albeit young. Outside of Simon, five players are battling for the other three starting posi-tions: junior Leonardo Chaves; sophomores Tyler Norris, David Sheridan, and Michael Eibl; and freshmanJohan Naglestad.”

In the midfield, sophomores Joergen Tesdal, Matthew McNab, Tore Loevaas, and Sven Ricke will battle forplaying time out wide, while in the center of the field Blandin, Farrier, Magiera, Norris, senior Tom Gillette, andfreshman Shahin Hemat will vie for game action. Three-year letterman Stefan Gojic also returns in themidfield. “This is an area where our numbers will allow us to keep up the pace. As other teams tire, we wantto maintain our level of play.”

In addition to Blandin and Farrier up front, Francis Marionhas several other players who can put the ball in the net.Campbell pointed to newcomers Ben Kwast and Lukas Poussetand returnees Phil Shafer and Carson Nance as those thatwould fill out the attacking crew.

The 2013 FMU men’s schedule sports six home matchesamong the 16 regular-season contests. The Patriots’ roadschedule includes Barton, Coker, Tusculum, Lees-McRae,Anderson, and five Peach Belt Conference opponents. ThePatriots are entering their 38th season, and the second on thelighted Hartzler Field. Campbell owns a career record of 91-36-22 in eight seasons at the collegiate level.
