Dear Friends,

It is with great excitement that I share information about Saint Paul’s musical offerings in the 2013-2014 program year.

Ours is a music tradition that is centuries old. In fact, we at times make use of music that was first sung as early as the 8th century. We are the inheritors of Jewish temple music, Gregorian chant, the Anglican choral tradition, gospel, spirituals, Shaker songs, and other music from all times and all places. While some of our traditions, music and texts may be old, our thinking is not. We find on a weekly basis that this music speaks to us and is relevant in today’s increasingly complex world. Ancient melodies and texts together with fresh perspectives inform our minds and shape our spirituality.

This year, I am happy to say that more people are taking part in Saint Paul’s music than ever before. With a now established chorister program and cherub choir for our youngest singers, the choirs together number over 85 singers, ages 4 through 85. The FIVE FRIDAYS concert series continues to grow and attract audiences who are eager to experience world class artistry while fighting hunger and homelessness in Northwest Philadelphia. Our music guild meets each month to ensure that our dynamic music ministry lives into our parish vision. Finally, our congregation sings in worship together every Sunday of the year, accompanied by Saint Paul’s historic Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ.

This is all made possible by our dedicated volunteers and music staff. It is truly an exciting time to be a part of Saint Paul’s community. On behalf of Saint Paul’s staff, vestry and music ministry, I invite you to join us this year as we continue to worship God, learn from music both ancient and new, and learn from each other.

With good wishes,

Zach HemenwayDirector of Music and Organist

About Music at Saint Paul’sThe music ministry of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church exists to provide meaningful music for our community in the worship of God. We also believe that our music is not just for our parish, but the entire community. Saint Paul’s choirs comprise more than 85 singers, and opportunities for involvement span all ages. There are also non-singing opportunities for those who would like to serve on the music guild and help with day to day operations of the music program. If you are inter-ested in joining us in our work, contact the Director of Music at the church office.

Sunday MorningThere is choral music each Sunday morning at the 10:30 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist. This service is sung by the accomplished Saint Paul’s Choir. Twice a month, our choristers join the adults and form an intergenerational choir in the Anglican tradition. In addition, our cherub choir learn to be leaders of liturgy by participating in the 9 a.m. service once a month.

About the Adult Choir and Choral ScholarsSaint Paul’s Adult Choir is comprised of approximately 50 members, both profes-sional and volunteer, who come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Member-ship is open to adults and boys with changed voices. We sing the 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist during the program year in addition to monthly Choral Evensong. New in 2013, our Choral Scholar program connects aspiring musicians to an intensive choral experience designed to give them experience in a semi-professional setting and a window into the requirements of being a professional musician. The Choral Scholars sing as a part of the Adult Choir.

About the ChoristersThe Saint Paul’s Chorister program is a multi-faceted musical opportunity for boys and girls ages 8 and up. Our emphasis is on the education and development of each child. During rehearsals, we learn healthy vocal technique, how to read music, and how to be leaders within our community. The choristers perform both on their own, and with the accomplished Saint Paul’s Adult Choir, giving our youth the opportunity to perform with professional musicians from throughout the Phila-delphia region. Our young singers also have the opportunity to study a musical instrument, for which a limited number of scholarships are available. The study of a musical instrument greatly reinforces the music skills taught in choir. For our Chorister program and Choir School, no prior musical experience is required and you do not have to be a member of Saint Paul’s Church to join.

If you wish to support music at Saint Paul’s Church, you can do so by making a contribution to the Ann Stookey Fund for Music at Saint Paul’s Church.

The Ann Stookey Fund for Music, established in 2012, will endow in perpetuity the unique character of our landmark Aeolian-Skinner Organ. This fund, once fully realized, will ensure the ongoing maintenance required to keep the organ in excellent repair in addition to funding projects that further the use and integrity of Saint Paul’s incredible Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ.

A committed member of the Saint Paul’s choir, Ann Stookey (1952-2012) held Saint Paul’s Aeolian-Skinner Organ in high regard, and this instrument played a major role in her musical experience that she valued greatly. Upon her death, Ann’s family and friends set up a fund in her memory that will secure the future condition of the organ, enabling others to enjoy it as much as she did. The maintenance costs of such an instrument are substantial, and this fund will allow Saint Paul’s Music to continue into the future.

Donations of any size are helpful, and may be sent to:

Saint Paul’s Episcopal ChurchAnn Stookey Fund for Music22 East Chestnut Hill AvenuePhiladelphia, Pennsylvania 19118

When writing checks, please designate ‘Ann Stookey Music Fund’ in the memo line. Contributors to the Ann Stookey Fund for Music of $1,000 or more are eligible to “adopt” one of the stops on the Saint Paul’s Organ. Requests for further information regarding the Ann Stookey Fund for Music, including inquiries into making a planned gift should be addressed to Zach Hemenway, Director of Music and Organist at: [email protected] or 215-242-2055 x35.
