Above and below we see the two main characters of this music video sleeping and clearly dreaming of what they wish to be. Above we see a man who clearly wishes to be a professional boxer and is dreaming of a thought of him about to fight in a arena. Similarly, below is a girl dreaming of herself being a professional ballerina. The two characters both have a dream and thus the music video is about not giving up.

Above are the obstacles that the two main characters clearly have to face as a barrier of making their dream come true. The man’s mum is a smoker and so living in a household of a chain smoker can’t be healthy for the man himself. Whereas the girl is deaf (shown above is her ear piece) and so that is her obstacle which she has to face and therefore train around and try and ignore/deal with if she wants her dream to come true. Close up shots are used to focus on the obstacle that they have to face, thus making it easier for the audience to understand what difficulties and challenges they have to overcome.

training to make their dream come true. Although they have difficulties they have to face, it still doesn‘t stop them training to try and pursue in making their dream a reality. Here, two medium front on shots are used to give the audience the whole picture of the training and to show their focus and passion. Because for our music video we would like to do a music video about someone training to make their dream come true, the story line of this music video, “Hall Of Fame” almost matches perfectly to what we were planning on doing for our video. We shall use a variety of shots and backgrounds to show our character training in hard conditions to show our characters commitment and passion like the two characters shown in this music video.

In addition, shots of the band performing are used to give the audience an image of who is playing the song. This is done so that the bands style and image is shown to give the audience an understanding of what the band look like.

The next music video I shall look it will be 50 Cent’s music video “In Da Club” due to the genre of the song being similar to the genre we shall be looking at.

Phillip Atwell directed the music video on December 10–11, 2002. Almost all the film footage was used in the video except for a scene where 50 Cent raps in a glass box.

50 Cent is introduced by hanging upside down from the roof of a gym. Atwell commented, "I think I could have done better with it, but I really liked the way that it turned out”.

The video ends with the camera zooming out of the club to reveal a two-way mirror with Eminem and Dr. Dre in white lab uniforms, observing 50 Cent and taking notes. Atwell stated that "seeing 50 with Dr. Dre and Eminem having his back is as big a visual statement as it is a musical statement" and the shot was significant because it made clear the club was inside the centre and not unrelated performance footage.

Two shots which work well in my opinion is when shots are shown of people in a club. This is because it not only links to the title of the song, but visually the shots used are good. The shot on the left is used as an establishing shot when 50 cent first enters the club to show the audience what type of environment 50 cent is entering. Whereas the shot on the right is used to show 50 cent with girls and other rappers having a good time.

Lots of shots of 50 cent performing are conveyed to the audience. Due to 50 Cents large popularity as a performer and rapper, audiences want to see 50 cent in his music videos performing. A large variety of this video is therefore based around showing 50 cent either in a club rapping with friends, or rapping in what appears to be a glass box. The music video works well for it’s genre as with hip hop and rap it is important to show the artist more than other genres of music.

The next music video I shall look it will be “Thinking of you” by Katy Perry

“Thinking of you” Katy Perry

“Thinking of You” is a song by American singer and

songwriter Katy Perry, taken from her second studio album, One of the Boys

(2008).

The song is a pop ballad song and features acoustic

instruments.

Two versions of a music video were released. One was a promotional video which was directed by a

friend of hers where she is in a white and dark apartment. The second version was the

commercial released version, which received positive reception from

music critics.

“Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics

Katy Perry's “Thinking of You” is pop genre and there are a number of factors which contribute to creating a pop music video.

Another common convention of a pop music video is using fade in and out effects, and quick cuts when editing, such as in “That Girl”, Mcfly. “Thinking of You” begins with a fade in to the first image, an abstract shot of the female character’s shoes. There are a many jump cuts throughout the music video and

some match cuts. As the video draws to a close the screen fades out again, following the convention of using fade effects found in pop music videos.

Neutral colour schemes are also popular in pop music videos, and “Thinking of You” follows through. Set in the 1940’s, a decade of pastels and neutrals in terms of fashion, the misé en scene was very subdued and natural. The costumes include dulled shades such as black and brown (in the funeral shots, and in the men’s clothing), but are brightened in the flashbacks with the use of pastels and florals the lead wears, signifying that was a happier time.

The setting is picturesque and natural, and the house and outdoors were neutral in colour. The black-and-white effect on the combat shots also remained within the neutral colour scheme.
