QuestionWhich type of tree will have the most relief from the sun?

Page 3: My S.T.E.M. 2013-2014

Purpose• The purpose of my investigation is to

determine what type of trees will provide the most relief from the sun. This is important because I want to know what tree to stand under on a hot day to stay cooler.

Page 4: My S.T.E.M. 2013-2014

HypothesisI hypothesize that an oak tree will provide the most relief from the sun. I believe this because oak trees have more branches.

Directions1 Gather materials2 Stand under direct sun for two minutes with thermometer. After two minutes , record the temperature. 3 Stand under an oak tree for two minutes with thermometer. After minutes record temperature 4 Repeat steps 2-3 with a lugustrum tree5 Repeat steps 2-3 with a golden rain tree6 Repeat steps 2-3 with a queen palm tree

Conclusion

My hypothesis was incorrect. The oak tree did NOT provide the most relief from the sun. The queen palm had the most relief at 12.8 degrees, the lugustrum at 15.6 degrees, the oak tree at 17.2 degrees, the golden rain at 19.5, and the pine tree at 21.2 degrees. If I had to do this again, I want to control the placement of the trees. I wonder if it would be warmer with a person under it?
