have gone through 2 con-vocational ceremony,

    little is known about

    UMK by quite a number

    of people. Some of the

    common question re-

    Africa, and the pacific

    islands. The current re-

    search activity by World

    group touched primarily

    on research activities

    currently ongoing by the

    two institution. Al-

    though Malaysia is the

    headquarters for World

    Fish, most its research

    activities are done in

    countries outside Malay-

sia in Asia (such as Bang-

    ladesh and Cambodia),

    their work. This

    will be followed

    by a research

    the 2nd semester. We

    would like to wish all

    FYP students and their

    The recently concluded

    research methodology

    workshop throughout

    March aims to prepare

    FYP 1 students to start

    research, and to help

    FYP 2 students to write

    up their studies. The

    series of talks and dis-

    cussion covering intro-

    duction to research,

    doing research and

    writing up research was

    conducted throughout

    March. FYP 1 student

    will now be well pre-

    pared to present their

    respective research

    proposal in early April.

    Meanwhile, FYP 2 stu-

    dent are currently ana-

    lyzing their data and

    writing up a thesis draft

    that must be submitted

    in preparing for both

    presentation and thesis

    submission for examina-

    tion.

    less and killing two

    birds with one stone

    requires clever, careful

    priority oriented plan-

    ning. Branding agenda

    should not jeopardized

    quality education. Num-

ber 1 on the list must be

    availability of complete

    basic education facili-

    ties, followed by condu-

    cive learning environ-

    ment , conducive teach-

    ing and working environ-

    ment. These are the

    core priorities to pro-

    mote and maintain the

    universitys standing.

    The same goes for FIAT,

    university? How old?,

    UMK? haven't heard

    before, UMK got en-

    g i n e e r i n g / m e d i c a l

    c o u r s e s ? ,

    entrepreneurial uni-

    versity, only business

    studies, right?. Some-

    time the questions

    were from people from

    other education insti-

tution be it private orgovernment. Having

    been given the tagline

    Entrepreneurial Uni-

    versity, a much more

    creative and entrepre-

    neurial approach in

    branding itself is highly

needed. It is a high task

    to promote a young

    university to the com-

    munity, especially when

    it took years and years

    for the bigger names in

    tertiary education pro-

vider to be known. It is

    high time also UMK

utilize its experts tohelp sell UMK.

    unconventional needs

    require unconventional

    approach. Tagline such

    as doing more with

    being 1 years old in

    April, creative planning

    in promoting itself to

    the wider community

must be laid out. It takes

    great effort to carve and

    associate FIAT with qual-

    ity education in agro

    based industry. It is

    hoped that with the

    development of the

    campus facilities, FIAT

    will continue to

    strengthen its stance

    and promote itself

    though quality educa-

    tion, and research excel-

    lence.

    One the 18th of March,

    a 4 team delegate from

    FIAT lead by Dr. Lee

    Seong Wei had a work-

    ing visit at World Fish

    Center, Batu Maung

    Penang. The delegate

    was attended to by Dr.

    Michael Phillips. After a

    brief introduction to

    both institution, the

    locations in Malaysia according

    to government breeding policy.

    The institute serves the purpose

    of an excellent training institute

    for veterinary and animal science

    professionals. . The group

    strongly feels that graduate

    students and researchers from

    FIAT can utilise the IBVK

    facilities. Not only that, the

center can also cater to students

who are planning to do industrial

    training in this institute.

    A group of 47 students of SBH2

programme led by Dr. Md. Ruhul

    Amin and En Mohd Hafiz

    Jamaludin on 28th of March,

made a visit to National Institute

    of Veterinary Biodiversity (IBVK)

    and they were given an

    impassioned exposure to various

    breeding technology. The IBVK is

    a central institute for domestic

    ruminant animal biotechnology

    located in Jerantut, Pahang, sits

on 161.4 hactares of land. IBVK

    purviews breeding bull selection,

    semen production from bull and

    buck, computer assisted

    evaluation of semen, cryo-

    preservation of semen, estrus

    synchronization by CIDR, MOET,

    IVF, embryo spliting, karyotyping,

    pregnancy diagnosis by

    ultrasound technique,

    insemination of cows and does,

    intra-uterine insemination in does

    and many other allied

    reproductive technologies. The

    institute is responsible for

    importing semen from abroad.

    Currently the institute is

    importing Charolais (from Canada

    and USA), Holstein Friesian and

    Brahman semen (from USA).

With the availablilty of a cryobank

for semen, the institute not only

    procure, store but also distribute

    cryopreserved semen from

to always be focus and not be side

    tracked. The organizers would like

to thank the speaker for their time

and knowledge their shared withthe UMK community.

    pandan leaves, habatus sauda

and kafir leaf. The herb extract

acts as an organic source to en-

    hance the chicken health. The

    second speaker, Mr. Firdaus, an

ex-engineer started his life as a

    full time entrepreneur 7 years

ago. Now at the age of 32, he

    not only produces thousand of

birds per cycle, his experience in

    intensive closed poultry rearing

    has got other poultry entrepre-

neurs and also would be entre-preneurs to seek his advice on

    building such closed

    system. Mr. Firdaus

    gave an almost 2

    hour talk, with the

    first part talking on

    the technical aspect

    for an intensive poul-

    try closed system on

    the material and re-

sources to build the barn, and on

managing the growth of a chick

up to the time of sales. He later

shared his ups and down in theindustry, and told the participant

    A series of Knowledge accul-

    turation program was held

    throughout March. The series

of talk was held during lunch

hours was given by FIAT amaz-

    ing and versatile lecturers. On

the 16th of March, Dr Soon Jan

    Mei gave an encouraging moti-

vational talk on how to be well

    prepared when face with prob-

    lems with an interesting title

Before I quit!. On the 19th of

    March, Dr Suhaimi Othaman talked

on planning the for the future.

Mastering the art of body lan-

guage given by Mr. Mohd Mah-

mud @ Mansur on the 20th of

March was very interesting and can

be very useful in ones everyday

    communication at home, at work,

We would like to congratulate Mrs. Nurhidayah

Hamzah and here husband for their beautiful

baby girl who was born on the 28th of March at

Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM), Ku-

bang Kerian. Although the baby was premature,

both baby and mother are in the good of health.

Everyone at FIAT pray for their quick recovery.

    A creative man is mo-

    tivated by the desire

    to achieve, not by the

    desire to beat others

and at play. With university life

    being very hectic, what better

way to end March with a talk on

managing stress by Prof. S. M.

Rezaul Karim. This goes to show,

FIAT lecturers can very reallyversatile, and know more than

just what is taught in lectures.

    Kudos to everyone who were

    involved in such activities!
