WIN £250 IN mErCUry GLAZING’S phoTo CompETITIoN!Gloucester-based trade supplier Mercury Glazing has just launched a photo competition with a £250 cash prize for its customers. To enter, all you need to do is submit a photo of a Mercury PVCu vertical slider or Mercury aluminium bi-fold installation that you’ve completed. Steve Cross, Mercury’s Director, said, “As a trade supplier, we don’t get to see our products in use – the last we usually see of them is when they’re packed up ready for delivery to our customers. This competition will show us the difference our products make and how our customers’ hard work is enhancing buildings all over the country.”

To enter the competition, simply email your photo of a Mercury PVCu vertical slider or Mercury aluminium bi-fold installation to [email protected], together with details of when and where the installation was completed and the Mercury invoice number that the installed products were supplied on. You may enter as many times as you like, but each entry should be made in a separate email. Photos must be in electronic format (JPG, TIFF or PNG) and by entering the competition, you are giving permission for your photo(s) to be used in Mercury’s marketing materials if they are deemed suitable. The competition closes on Friday 26 September 2014 and the best photo, as judged by the Mercury team, will win a £250 cash prize!

The winning photo will be revealed on Mercury Glazing’s website, in the press and in Mercury Glazing’s October email newsletter.

Good luck to everyone who enters!Mercury is a specialist fabricator of Spectus PVc-u vertical sliders, Smarts aluminium bifold doors and windows and an increasingly popular range of timber vertical sliders. The company supplies fabricators and installers across the uk from its base in gloucester.

Door-Stop has issued a Customer Service Charter. It sets out what installers who buy from Door-Stop can expect, and what to do if things go wrong. The charter outlines Door-Stop’s promise of good service, high standards and a fast, reliable response to queries. It’s written in plain English, jargon free and simple to understand. Problems at Door-Stop are rare – its unique ‘If it’s late it’s free’ guaranteed 3 day delivery is a good indicator of normal high standards – but the Charter promises if and when problems do occur they will be dealt with as efficiently and quickly as possible.

The Customer Service Centre (www.door-stop.co.uk/customer-services), launched last year, is the first port of call for customers with an issue to raise. With just a couple of clicks customers can report a problem at any time of night or day and know that it’s been logged, and the right person will be alerted to help.

“The new Charter goes further,” says Martin Dickie, Business Unit Manager. “It sets out the standards of service customers can expect and how long it will take for their issue to be acknowledged and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction. We’ll acknowledge within 2 hours and resolve it within 72 hours.” If Door-Stop’s customers aren’t happy with the progress of their query they can call Martin Dickie directly on 01623 446390.

To see the Charter for yourself visit www.door-stop.co.uk/customerservicecharter.

Dear EditorApproved installer schemes and networks have fallen in and out of fashion. But recently a number of Syscos have launched new schemes. The industry likes its badges, for sure. But the word ‘approved’ seems patronising to me. Who are Syscos to ‘approve’ fabricators and installers?

And what do members get from such schemes? In my view, not a lot. Most over promise and under deliver.

Members get a badge to stick on their vans and website, some POS and a branded brochure that’s the same as their competitors. Some let members add their details on the back. Others promise leads for members to fight over with their competitors.

How does that help them stand out and sell? It doesn’t, if we’re honest.

In contrast, Deceuninck will not have an approved fabricator-installer scheme or network. Deceuninck’s strategy is to help fabricators and installers stand on their own feet with products that stand out, and help them sell using sales aids built around their own brands.

We give them tools to generate their own leads, not share leads with rivals. That’s why we created the Deceuninck MyBrand marketing suite, so companies can choose the level of personalisation they want using their own brand, colour scheme, photographs, copy and products so there is no possibility of them competing with anyone using the same POS.

Our customers say Deceuninck is more than a supplier, because we partner customers to help them build their own business.

Yours sincerely rob Mcglennon Deceuninck Sales Director

As part of their continued expansion, National Plastics – the UK’s largest independent trade counter network - are pleased to announce the acquisition today of three new depots in Worthing, Horsham and Chichester. Formerly operating as Churchleys Builders Plastics, these depots represent yet another bold step forward for a company which has seen unprecedented growth over the past few years.

Managing Director Geoff Foster said “The acquisition of these depots is a great opportunity for us to move into the South East, and we look forward to bringing our core values of superior quality products, great value prices and exemplary service levels to these areas.”

“We have planned for major expansion in the coming years, and this acquisition represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter for National Plastics, allowing us to serve an even greater area.”

“This latest acquisition brings the total number of new depots we’ve added this year to five, and more importantly it will see us enter a new part of the country, and we are very excited to be moving ahead with our ambitious plans.”

With new team members, and a solid plan for the future, National Plastics are going from strength to strength.

CENSolutions is widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries, and as well as supporting some window industry specific events in recent months, the company has also been very busy in Harrogate at the Trading Standards Institute Conference. Mike Gaillard explains: “We have been working closely with Trading Standards for some time now, helping to educate their officers on CE Marking and the lack of compliance to date, but we had enquiries from over 60 Officers and other trade organisations on this very topic.

“We took our easy to use series of checklists of what CE Marking requires

within the Fenestration Industry to the show and they proved extremely popular. Since it became a legal requirement in July 2013, only a minority of window, insulating glass sealed unit and toughened glass companies have implemented CE Marking. Trading Standards are already investigating a couple of companies who were reported to them as not being CE Marked and as part of the process contacted CENSolutions for more information.

“We supported the companies that put in the effort to achieve CE Marking in time for the new legislation last year, but we want to continue to support them for doing the right thing. Offering more information to the people involved in policing CE Marking is another way we can do just that.”

We all love a generic term. Have you ever heard of anyone who's going to Dyson the stair carpets or who's been Electroluxing all day and feeling whacked-out? Didn't think so. We “Hoover” don't we... and everybody knows what we mean - or do they? When it comes to generic terms and the understanding of what it really means, Hoover is an outright winner. We know it means vacuuming or using a vacuum cleaner but how well would you know whether other terms in common usage were really brands in disguise?

Try THiS TeST

I know that a Zippo lighter is probably a brand name but I didn't know that escalator once was. Here are some more commonly used generic terms. See if you can spot the one red herring.

Jet Ski - a personal water craft and also a Kawasaki brand name.

Bubble Wrap - would you believe a TradeMark belonging to the Sealed Air Corporation?

Onsies have become very popular in the last couple of years - but you guessed it a TradeMark of... Gerber Childrenswear.

Jacuzzi - is a company.

Breathalyzer is owned by the Indiana University Foundation.

Chapstick is a brand name of lip balm produced by Pfizer.

Kleenex is a brand; as is Band Aid.

Would you believe that Ping Pong was trademarked in 1901?

The Q of Q-tips stands for quality according to Unilever - the brand owner.

Shall I go on? Sellotape, Tupperware, Velcro, Tippex, Post-It Notes. What about Styrofoam or Formica? Hells Bells, even Frisbee and Hula Hoop.

Windbreakers (the jackets not flatulence), Stetsonsand Y-Fronts conclude the list...well almost.

How about Building Regulation Compliance Certificates?

a reD Herring Or TwO

I said there'd be one red herring. And it's Y-Fronts. That's pants you might think but no... the Jockey company first introduced Y-fonts but never TradeMarked them so anyone can use the term.

A second red herring is of course is Building Regulation Compliance Certificates. Why? Well that is the correct name for what installers are supposed to provide to their customers once they've completed a job (via their competent person scheme provider of course).

Unfortunately, too many installers have come to refer to Building Regulation Compliance Certificates as “FENSA Certificates”. This is because they know what they mean... but sadly too many installers are effectively confusing their customers because the customer does not know what they mean. And yet it is incredibly important that customers understand that this is a really serious document - they will have problems selling their house if they don't have one. It is important that installers use the correct terminology so that customers 'get the gravitas'. And remember, if your competitor uses the term correctly and explains exactly what it means but you don't...who do you think will be winning the quality business?

THe cerTaSS View

Gemma Swanke, Certass' Sales Manager says: "When people call Certass and ask

if we do FENSA Certificates we explain to them that we can’t!

Like all good competent person scheme operators, we explain that we can produce a Building Regulation Compliance Certificate, so long as they are using the services of a Certass accredited installer.

We get enough calls on this subject to raise an eyebrow or two but I think it is the level of questions that follow that raises the concern homeowners are clearly not being informed properly." (In the next month or so, The Installer will run a Certass Column focusing on the most common questions asked by the public.)

Gemma continues: "As the government place new rules on all competent person schemes to make the industry more transparent, the understanding that the Building Regulation Compliance Certificate is THE term that must be referenced will come into the spotlight.

We will be pushing our members to use the term correctly in all their business dealings and will be running a campaign to ensure that the whole industry observes what we consider to be professional behaviour."

Ian Miller formerly FIT Show Sales Manager and UK Sales Director for Hoppe has taken up the new position as Head of Sales for The Independent Ratings Company with a brief to drive sales and provide on-going business development for the company’s growing list of window and door industry clients.“It is a really exciting challenge for me; when I was asked to get involved with The Independent Ratings Company I was delighted to do so. It is clear to me that what the company is trying to achieve is very much in line with modern thinking; encouraging businesses in our industry to take feedback from customers and use it as a key marketing tool to generate new business. This is exactly what they should be doing. But using customer feedback to identify weaknesses in order to improve service is also really important, and this is something else which can come out of the packages which The Independent Ratings Company offers”.

“For me the most interesting thing I have found to this point is that lots of businesses in our industry already take feedback from their customers, but so few of them actually publish it for people to see. This really is a big missed opportunity; good customer feedback is a great way to convince other potential consumers that you are exactly the company they should be dealing with”.

“I am also delighted to be involved in the on-going business development side of The Independent Ratings Company’s customers. My role is not just to sell to new clients, but to continually help those who are already working with us to improve what they do, to help them find new and better ways to use the feedback

from their customers to generate new business”.

“The range of packages is outstanding – whether you want to take a ‘line in the sand’ one off survey to understand how your customers see your service, or whether you want to have a fully managed account to gather and publish feedback as a customer selling to retail, or a trade supplier working with an approved list of installers, we have something for you”.

“We already know from the customers we are working with that they are seeing tangible business benefits, new work coming to them which is directly attributable to the positive customer feedback they have posted on their websites. Along with the rest of the team I am here to help. If we can help you we will; we are a business encouraging our customers to win work by giving great service and by recording it in the form of customer feedback. Our own customer service ethos will fully support this; it is another of the reasons I am so excited to be involved”.

“I can’t wait to get going, but in the meantime if I can help you please get in touch 07903 431278”. Best wishes, Ian.

“The most recent thinking shows that customers receiving negative reviews but responding to them in a positive manner are more likely to achieve customer respect and loyalty than those only showing positive reviews”.

PeOPLe DOn’T exPecT PerfecTiOn

“The reality is that people neither expect or believe in perfection; the occasional less than perfect review shows that the feedback is genuine, and so is the company publishing it”.

“It is really important that consumers have confidence and trust in the reviews which they read from their peer group. Through The Independent Ratings Company consumers can be assured that all reviews are genuine, and that comments made cannot be manipulated

in any way. Where there are negative reviews we work with our customers to manage not only their responses, but a positive conclusion to the complaint or concern raised by the customer in the first place. This is just another part of the service provided by The Independent Ratings Company”.

unDerSTanDing reViewS anD Taking OwnerSHiP Of yOur On-Line rePuTaTiOn

“The most common question we field is ‘what if someone gives me a bad review’? The reality is that from time to time somebody will give you a bad review, but so long as you have a mechanism in place which enables you to respond to them you will be absolutely fine – there will be no harm done”.

“The more difficult issue is when you don’t have any feedback mechanism on your website – this is when you are vulnerable to a disgruntled customer venting their anger on a ‘random’ review site on line AND it appears directly under your name on a google search”.

“There is nothing much you can do about this, it is outside of your control; but most customers won’t let this deter them from looking. The key is to have a full feedback process visible on your website populated by your customers. This way you get the balance which comes with posting reviews over a period of months and this gives your customers confidence that a single rogue review is not a real reflection of your true service levels”.

Graham Jones, Managing Director of MPL tells us there is increasing evidence to suggest that the market for replacement locks in the consumer sector is growing at a very noticeable rate.“The evidence is there for us to see first hand; sales of replacement door locks have continued to rise through our MPL business, the customer base has increased, and we have seen a significant level of interest in our Approved Stockist model”.

“I have no doubts that more and more people are looking to replace their door locks

and window ironmongery these days than just think about the wholesale replacement of a window or door. I am firmly of the view that the start of this trend was due in no small part to the economic conditions which prevailed in recent years with house moves being more difficult; but as things have started to improve the trend has continued in an upwards spiral”.

“In equal measure I have absolutely no doubt that this trend is also partly due to the extensive number of home makeover programmes on TV and magazines being published which have

become so popular in the last few years. People more than ever are thinking about makeover and upkeep; we are becoming less of a throw away society again and this is a really positive thing for MPL”.

and installers to hold small stocks too if through parts of their trading history they have supplied a particular lock type. If there is a need it can be serviced there and then”.

“I understand that for the most part they would prefer to supply a replacement door or window, but that does not always work for their customer. Giving the customer the best service possible at a time which is distressing for them is a great way to ensure that when they are ready to buy new they will come back to the fabricator or installer as the first port of call”.

PIGS was founded 10 years ago and has been very successfully run by Claire Shilling from One Shilling Marketing. Claire has handed the organisational baton over to Andy and Sarah Ball at Balls2 Marketing after working together on the highly successful PIGS in Birmingham after the Triple Glazing Question in April.

“We would like to thank Claire for doing an amazing job for the last 10 years,” says Sarah Ball. “We have seen the value of PIGS to the industry and supported it since the start. We have already created Social PIGS with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to keep connected between events. As we enter the second half of 2014, Anglo European are finalising their expansion plans, employing new staff, offering extra work shifts, and a complete office re-fit. Late last year the company expanded its transport and delivery division by purchasing eight extra wagons.

“If we are to keep up with demand, we not only have to grow our workforce, but we also need to make sure we can cope with the extra deliveries,” commented James Lister operations director.

“We have built up an excellent reputation regarding our efficient service with existing and new customers and they now rely on us to deliver when we say we will, and this is core to our success.”

Anglo is now rolling out 10 million metres of steel reinforcement per year, to supply the ever growing number of customers. When put into perspective in terms of scale and distance, if you lay four years of reinforcement production end to end, they would circle the earth.

“Working on these scales of production and lead times, we keep a very close eye on our warehousing and stock levels. Anglo always ensures that we keep two steps ahead therefore minimising any problems that may arise,” comments James.

“The business has grown incredibly over the last two years, helped by our successful marketing campaign as well as our unique cut to size service, which has proved to be extremely popular. Customers can have exactly the size and lengths of reinforcement they require on one pallet unique to them.”

The company pride themselves on their customer service which is at the heart of the business and is one of the reasons they are now one of the leading suppliers of Steel reinforcement for the window and door market.

Recent changes to the DCLG licence held by all Competent Person Scheme (CPS) Operators have meant that all CPS Operators have to be able to demonstrate the technical competence (both knowledge and practical skills) of its member companies and their site operatives.

Our stand at this year’s FIT Show included a classroom environment providing our members the opportunity to sit the required MTC knowledge assessment, which proved to be a resounding triumph.

Certass was the only CPS operator to introduce an MTC classroom onto its stand creating a positive furor which introduced us at Certass to many new people from various sectors within our industry and that of the wider building industry sector thus providing a fantastic networking platform. All the feedback Certass received was very positive and many new customers and leads were created as a result.

To learn more about the new MTC requirements and how Certass can help you, please click on the below link: http://www.certass.co.uk/mtc.

The latest data released by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) shows that construction is one of the sectors benefiting most from the recently introduced National Insurance (NI) Employment Allowance.

From April 2014, every business and charity in the UK has been entitled to a £2,000 Employment Allowance to help reduce their employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) each year.

This August, BIS reported that over 725,000 employers across the UK had claimed the allowance and construction is in the top three sectors to benefit with 91,000 employers taking up the scheme.

Employers can claim the allowance through standard payroll software and only have to signify their intention on one occasion by completing the yes/no indicator.

HMRC will automatically carry the claim forward each tax year, so employers only need to check that their circumstances have not changed from the previous year. There is a paper process for employers who still submit their returns this way.

The Employment Allowance applies per employer, regardless of how many PAYE schemes they operate, so each employer can only claim for one allowance and it is up to them which PAYE scheme they claim against.

Further information regarding the Employment Allowance can be found on the Gov.uk website.

It’s the time to trade their old ladders in for discounted new ones this year, with the Ladder Exchange 2014. Beginning on 1 September and run by the Ladder Association (LA), the Ladder Exchange takes old, potentially dangerous ladders out of circulation by offering people a cash incentive to trade them in. The 2014 scheme will run from September until the end of the year.

“This is our third year running the Ladder Exchange, which has been an excellent means of getting out the ladder safety message while helping people in a practical way,” explained Cameron Clow, Chairman, LDA. “Thousands of ladders were traded in last

year, saving a lot of people and businesses money and, more importantly, hopefully lives as well.”

Safety for the people who actually work on ladders is particularly being promoted during the 2014 Exchange. As noted in the new Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidance released this year, people working with ladders must be competent and ‘have had instruction and understand how to use the equipment safely’.

The guidance goes on to say that appropriate training can help to prove competence.

The UK-wide ladder training scheme, accredited by the LA, focuses on this competence, and the 2014 campaign highlights the training centres throughout the UK which provide it.

This year’s Exchange will also come with expert tips for checking the condition of ladders and using them in the home, and a look at the experiences people have had with unsafe ladder use.

As in previous years, running alongside the Exchange, will be the Idiots on Ladders contest. Anyone can send in pictures of dangerous ladder use to the Ladder Association Facebook page (facebook.com/ladderassociation) or e-mail to [email protected]. The public vote will then determine 2014’s biggest Idiot on a Ladder.

All of these tips and information will be available from the Ladder Exchange website (ladderexchange.org.uk). The site is also the place to go to find a

nearby trade-in partner, with outlets all around the UK ready to offer discounts in exchange for old ladders in any condition. Details are also available by telephoning the LA directly: 0845 2601048.

It makes sense to get a new ladder from next month, argues the Ladder Association.

Interest in fire doors has been reignited by a major industry initiative. Fire Door Safety Week makes a return this year following a successful launch in 2013. The campaign will take place between 15-21 September 2014, involving the whole of the industry and raising awareness of the critical role fire doors play in passive fire protection in every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.

The creation of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and BWF-CERTIFIRE, Fire Door Safety Week reached over 6.5 million people last year and received major support from the Fire Minister, fire industry leaders, fire and rescue services across the country and leading fire door and doorset manufacturers and ironmongers.

Despite this support, prosecutions under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, continue to be given to building owners and property managers in the UK who neglect their responsibility to ensure fire doors are installed and properly maintained. Already in 2014 a fine of £70,000 and a 15 month jail sentence have been handed out in two fire door related judgements.

Fire Door Safety Week has the backing from a wide range of organisations, including the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), Lorient, Fire Kills, Fire Mark Education, TRADA, Exova Warringtonfire, IFC, fire and rescue services, fire door and doorset manufacturers and major players in the ironmongery sector.

“Fire Door Safety Week 2013 really got the industry fired up about the need for properly installed and maintained fire doors,” said John Fletcher, Scheme

Manager, BWF-CERTIFIRE. “But while prosecutions continue, we are determined to do even more to raise awareness.”

Fire Door Safety Week next month will emphasise the vital role this product plays in the safety of people and property.

The unexpected and overnight decision by the government to end its Green Deal Home Improvement Fund has run into criticism. The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) announced suddenly that it had closed the £190 million Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) to new applications with immediate effect. It said that due to ‘overwhelming public demand’, the allocated budget had now been reached. The response was immediate from trade associations and businesses that had spent much time and resources committing to the scheme. One example was the Builders Merchants’ Federation BMF which stated: ‘The BMF is very disappointed to hear this news. The GDHIF may not be a perfect solution to

the underlying problem but it illustrates that cash incentives do entice families to act to improve the thermal performance of their home.’

The government had only launched the new funding in June where householders could claim £7,600 for improvements under the scheme. The unilateral decision to close on 24 July, caught everyone by surprise, especially as it was done overnight. The DECC states on its website that it ‘will monitor voucher redemption rates and will consider whether to launch a further offer should funds become available’.

The BMF was not impressed and complained in its response: ‘There will be undoubted anger and exasperation in the supply chain that ministers have (once again) chosen to change direction in policy and cut funding at short notice without warning. Earlier this week, we learned that due to the Fund’s runaway success, DECC had modified the criteria to prolong the amount of money available. Yet a few days’ later, it has been closed.’

In accusing the government of a ‘feast-and-famine approach’ that exasperated businesses in planning their investment decisions, manufacturing processes, sales operations and trading forecasts for the future, the BMF was voicing many similar complaints.

The Glass and Glazing Federation had not issued a statement at the time of going to press but it is understood one will be made that will express disappointment over the decision.

ANGEr AT ENDING of GrEEN DEAL fUNDING

Not much to laugh about – this Green Deal image the government ran with must be causing some gritted teeth in the home improvement sector.

Inferior imitations of RENOLITs world-leading exterior foils are appearing in the UK market. Primarily laminated on cladding and roofline products, these foils will fail when exposed to weather and sunlight, causing problems for installers and home owners alike.

In recent months, a growing number of RENOLIT customers have made the company aware that these products were being installed in the UK and marketed as suitable for exterior application. Having weather tested samples of these components in their in house laboratory to DIN EN513 (as specified in RAL 716), the results prove that these films are completely unsuitable for exterior use. In their tests the products failed to achieve even 1300 hours of artificial weathering before displaying unacceptable signs of colour variation, which is considered to equate to less than 2 years exposure in a UK climate, with the samples then

becoming almost completely destroyed in the equivalent of less than 3 years (see photo 1). Furthermore, customers of RENOLIT have provided photos of UK installations using this type of foil that have experienced full product failure, reportedly within two years of installation (see photo 2).

RENOLIT therefore recommends that fabricators and installers check the source of their foiled products before installing at a customer. This will prevent costly repairs in the near future and damage to both their own and the industry’s reputation.

The increasing popularity of foiled building components has been well publicised, as home owners become increasingly aware of the opportunities to improve their property with realistic woodgrain designs or fashionable solid colours rather than just plain white pvc-u. As the inventor and world’s largest manufacturer of these exterior laminates, RENOLIT has been at the forefront of this growth and all indications are that this trend

will continue to grow over the coming years.

Exterior laminates are continually exposed to the environment and require specific components within their formulation to be able to withstand weathering and degradation over time. At RENOLIT they extensively test all exterior laminates, both internally and externally

to ensure real performance targets are achieved. All RENOLIT EXOFOL effects are manufactured and tested in accordance with the accepted industry standard - RAL 716, which requires a minimum performance of 10,000 hours of artificial weathering (equating to over 10 years in a UK climate) without excessive colour fade or visual defects.

The RENOLIT Group is an international leader in the manufacture of high-quality plastic films and related products for technical applications. This independent family-owned business, which has been setting benchmarks for quality and innovation for over 65 years, now employs a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees at more than 30 production sites and sales entities.

Renovation projects have surged in popularity over the last couple of years for frameXpress, as sales figures have repeatedly risen in respect of this market sector at the company. It has been attributed to continuing innovation in high performance products such as the FS70 mm system from Profile 22 as well as the dynamic design options now available, which appeal to the wise homeowner and the shrewd installer.

One of the most recent frameXpress projects incorporated a number of advanced, high performance products from the company’s range, which were tailored specifically to meet the exacting standards of the homeowners, who wished their property to maintain and reflect a very traditional appearance throughout.

The Slate Grey colour foil was chosen which has provided a stunning aesthetic finish to the installation at the home. Matching the design requirements required meticulous attention to detail in order to complement the style of the period residence in Berkshire.

Providing peace of mind and complete solutions with a vast range that offers outstanding quality guarantees has been a major part of the frameXpress

philosophy for many years, with management focused on helping customers to grow their own business. For Ian Davis, Sales Manager product diversity as well as consistent quality combine to enable customers to grow their business along with their reputations.

Ian Davis comments, “There is huge potential for installers as the cost of renovation over moving home remains appealing. As such, this market has such scope for helping homeowners to add value for when they feel the time is right to move.”

Ian Davis believes that satisfying consumer demand has never been more fiercely competitive for customers however, never before has there been more choice to exploit potential opportunity. It is this breadth of choice combined with quality guarantees which he considers brings frameXpress repeat business.

Ian comments, “frameXpress has a long-standing reputation for excellence providing customers with products that are aesthetically superior and that will

add value to homes which in turn offer guaranteed peace of mind. The diversity of our products enables us to supply a very modern, highly efficient range that can be easily tailored to individual specification.”

As a company that prides itself on providing exemplary delivery services, the colours in the range which include Chartwell Green, Dark Red and Slate Grey as well as two woodgrain finishes, can be delivered within a 3 week lead time.

As a company frameXpress continues to try to invigorate the market by combining technical strength with striking design. For Ian Davis he considers it is essential to support customer needs through diversity and high performance standards.

Ian concludes, “Our range and services blend perfectly with both technical and aesthetic requirements on all project types, which are bringing excellent results as we head into the second half of this year.”

mAco product portfoLIo for rESIDENCE 9 profILE SySTEmResidence 9 is a new window system designed to replicate the 19th Century Flush Sash Timber Window. It is ideal for use in conservation areas due to its authentic appearance. This authentic design is also

appealing to any homeowner who wants a top end luxury window brand.

It can accommodate 28mm double or 44mm triple glazing with market leading thermal and acoustic performance and achieved one of the highest classifications on weather test due to its robust

design. It is hand finished and made by craftsmen.*

MACO UK have been working closely with Residence 9 and can now offer a range of bespoke striker plates and hardware systems to suit the R9 system.*Information taken from Residence 9 website.

PVC-U windows and Grade II buildings have historically been strangers. For planners and conservation officers, Grade II listing (and all too often, conservation zones too) have meant one thing only when it comes to windows: timber.

It was something that Bison Frames had always felt was very unfair, so when one customer came to the team asking them to develop a PVC-U vertical slider that would be accepted for use on his Grade II listed home in Blackburn, the team was happy to accept the challenge.

Mark Tetley, Bison’s director, says, “In many cases, a modern timber window is inferior to its PVC-U counterpart in terms of durability and thermal efficiency and is also more expensive. We wanted to develop a product that would give homeowners in listed and period buildings a genuine choice when they upgraded their windows and this project gave us the perfect opportunity to do it.”

He explains, “We involved the planning officer on the project right from the start, so we could understand and overcome any objections they had when it came to PVC-U. Amongst other things, we discovered that they were not keen on the cruder detail of the jointing around the sash horns on a standard PVC-U VS window and that the welded joints and a shiny PVC-U finish were not options they were happy to consider.”

After much development and design work, the Genesis Vertical Slider was born. It takes advantage of the rapid development of PVC-U technology in recent years to create a window that’s a stunning reproduction of a traditional timber vertical slider. It uses traditional timber jointing methods on all joints and has a low sheen finish. Period look high security cam locks and sash buttons, run through sash horns and a deep bottom sash rail as standard complete the beautifully authentic appearance.

But perhaps the greatest sign that the Genesis authentically replicates the traditional timber alternative is the fact

that it was accepted for use in the Grade II listed home that started the product’s development.

Mark concludes, “PVC-U on heritage properties is always going to be a sensitive subject. I would be the last person to suggest that we should allow standard white PVC-U windows to be installed in a listed building. But as the Genesis VS proves, our industry has come on in

leaps and bounds and PVC-U can be more than a match for timber in terms of aesthetics and thermal efficiency – and let’s not forget that PVC is virtually maintenance free, unlike timber”. Such high quality products can enhance a building’s appearance, as well as helping reduce carbon emissions, heating bills and ongoing maintenance.”

No one knows the value of strong working relationships better than Quickslide’s trade partners and there’s no better example than Wilson Windows. The Loughborough-based family business has worked with Quickslide and its products since 2011, working

closely with Key Account Manager Amy Perrin. MD Dale Wilson and Karen visited Quickslide at its Brighouse, West Yorkshire, HQ when they first became customers, says Amy: “They came to see who we are and what we do and we have built up a close working relationship ever since.”

“I speak to Dale on a regular basis. We have developed a good routine; he is always great fun and a pleasure to work with and we always have a good laugh together. I’m very glad they are getting so much from our partnership.”

There was a surprise for Amy at the FIT Show when Dale and son Callum dropped in on the Quickslide stand to thank her in person with a bottle of Champagne, when Dale told her: “Thanks for always being on the other end of the phone and making it all so easy.”

Amy added: “All of us at Quickslide put a lot of importance on customer service.

It’s always rewarding to see it working so well for both sides but it’s also a pleasure when someone says ‘thank you’ in this way.”

Wilson Windows fabricates its own casement windows, predominantly for the domestic market but buys in a number of colours of both casement and sliding sash.

Quickslide is best known for its acclaimed sliding sash windows, which have helped bring this once niche product into the mainstream of the retrofit and new-build market, but it also manufactures a wide range of other styles of windows and doors for trade, commercial and domestic customers.

GLASS & GLAZING

For many homeowners, it’s the glazing that is the biggest decision when it comes to their composite door, so it pays to choose a door supplier who understands the importance of the glazing aesthetics and has developed a product that will meet all homeowners’ demands and more.Distinction Door’s glazing cassette leads the market for several reasons. In terms of aesthetics, the cassette’s colour, moulding design and grain effect match the rest of the composite door for a seamless finish with ultimate kerb appeal. This is enhanced because there are no unsightly plugs or screws to interfere with

the elegant appearance. In addition, slim sightlines maximise light transmission. As an indication of the quality of the Distinction offering, the white, black, red, blue and green solid colour cassettes are through-coloured, so they maintain their pristine appearance because knocks and scratches do not leave a white mark where paint is removed.

Away from the aesthetics, Distinction Doors has paid just as much attention to the technical features of the glazing cassette. Eleven of the 12 glass ranges are triple glazed, with the decorative pane encapsulated between two clear panes. The result is a complete closing solution, providing greater thermal performance and lower maintenance requirements, because no fiddly dusting is required to keep the panes looking pristine.

The cassette is an attractive product for installers too, because snap-together fitting makes it uniquely fast and easy to fit. It is also reversible because each assembly consists of an identical inner and outer cassette, with symmetrical male and female connectors/pockets.

Distinction Door’s Nan Ya GRP composite door is the UK’s market leader and as the quality of the glazing cassette demonstrates, it’s a position that’s well-deserved.

Following their dazzling display of composite door innovation at the FIT Show, Solidor are now turning their attentions to Grand Designs Live later this year, along with the inaugural Build Show in 2015.Solidor have already exhibited at Grand Designs Live in 2013 and were the first company to sign up for the 2014 event, given that over 50,000 visitors came through the doors at the NEC, Birmingham. Last year the company gave out 4,500 iPhone leaflets, each replicating the front of an iPhone to encourage homeowners to download their latest Door Designer App for iPhone and iPad.

This year’s Grand Designs Live will again be held at the NEC, Birmingham and Solidor will have a large presence on stand B699, where they will be looking to build upon their proven retail marketing campaign that was awarded G13 Promotional Campaign of the Year – Retail.

Just 6 months on and Solidor’s retail marketing campaign has further expanded to include the industry’s first Augmented Reality (AR) App, a number of new consumer videos on their YouTube channel and a Door Designer feature on their website. As at the end of July there have been 26,323 web site visits and 2,726 enquiries from consumers looking for a better composite door. All the enquiries have been passed on to a Recommended and Premium installer network of 452 companies across the UK.

While there will be no FIT Show in 2015, there will be the Build Show from the same organising team, which is aimed at the wider building and construction industry and Solidor have been one of the first to sign up for it. They will be appearing front of house in hall 3, stand 150 on a 60m2 island as they continue to lead the composite door market. The show will be on 28-30th April 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham.

The strength of Distinction Door’s position as the UK market leader in composite doors was recently reinforced when its Nan Ya doorset was proved to be the most thermally efficient composite door on the market. Chantel Roach, Distinction’s Marketing Manager, said, “The thermal performance of a door is always important to homeowners, especially with energy bills on the rise. We’re delighted that our door has proved its quality in this area, as in many others.”

The thermal efficiency of the Nan Ya slab was proved in tests at the University of Salford’s Energy House. The tests showed that the Nan Ya 44.5mm slab was 19% more thermally efficient than a 48mm solid timber core composite door and 17% more thermally efficient than a 44mm traditional timber panelled door.

The reason for the dramatic difference in thermal efficiency is thanks to

the Nan Ya slab’s high performance insulated core, which is made up of a high density CFC-free PV foam. The foam is environmentally friendly with a Global Warming Potential of less than five and an Ozone Depletion Score of zero, making it all the more attractive to environment-conscious homeowners.

The door is proven to the BS 6375-1 classification for weather tightness, air, wind and water and, once installed, far exceeds the requirements of Approved Document L of the Building Regulations.

As Chantel says, the market-leading thermal efficiency is a vital selling point for homeowners.

Combined with stunning aesthetics, a huge range of design, colour and triple glazed glass options plus excellent security as standard, the Nan Ya GRP composite door slab from Distinction Doors is a competition-beating product.

Chantel concludes, “We were the first company to introduce GRP composite doors to the UK market and we’re the UK’s biggest supplier. The biggest reason for that is the unbeatable Nan Ya slab. We are proud to supply it and we know our customers value what it has to offer them.”

The UK’s leading composite door supplier, Distinction Doors, is set to open a new 198m2 paint plant later this year. Distinction’s Marketing Manager, Chantel Roach, said, “We have a policy of continuous investment in our business and the paint plant is part of that. Bringing our painting in-house will give a wealth of benefits for our customers because it will enable us to improve quality, lead times and cost in this area. We will also be able to work with our customers to develop bespoke colours for their portfolio. Crucially, it will also mean that the colour warranty on our doors will come from us, as the door and cassette provider, rather than a third party.”

The £185,000 paint plant is located at Distinction’s Tankersley headquarters in South Yorkshire and has been equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to

give quality and efficiency benefits. This includes a gas catalytic drying system with infrared panels and control system that will speed up the drying process without damaging the product. It is also equipped with a breathing air unit that operates at minus 40 degree dew point, which will ensure that all contaminants are removed from both the spray gun and breathing equipment before use, improving finished quality as well as health and safety procedures. Capacity is likely to be in the region of 500 doors per week, helping Distinction to continue to meet and exceed demand for its market-leading doors.

The plant will also help Distinction Doors to increase

its commitment to the environment. It includes a heat recovery system that uses the waste heat generated by the site’s compressors to create a thermostatically controlled environment in the paint booth, preparation area and offices above.

Distinction Doors has grown from a standing start to a company with an annual turnover of nearly £40 million in just ten years. This is thanks to an outstanding product in the form of the Nan Ya GRP composite door slab and a commitment to delivering above and beyond customer expectations, as the opening of the new paint plant demonstrates. It’s hardly surprising that it’s the UK’s market leader.

Nottingham-based home improvement specialist Glazedale is bringing a much-needed fresh approach to an industry that’s been fighting against the ‘persistent double-glazing salesman’ stigma for far too long… Husband and wife team Darren and Claudia Shelbourn are the brains behind the operation, which focuses mainly on bespoke, high-end installations for homeowners. Darren started out as an industry apprentice in 1988 before setting up on his own in 1991.

Darren Shelbourn, Glazedale’s owner and MD explains: “We used to buy in many of the windows when we first started out, just making the bespoke frames ourselves – but as the business grew, we were being asked more and more

for bespoke installations. It made sense to rent a factory and move into making all our own products so that we could control the quality ourselves.

“We looked around and decided to go with Liniar profiles, due to their energy efficient and fabricator-friendly design, and we haven’t looked back since. We find many homeowners and self-builders want something a bit different to the norm, and we’re able to supply that; with everything fully matching and a systems company that is constantly designing new products.”

a 21ST cenTury firM

Glazedale is one of the few window fabricators that has really embraced social media as a marketing channel. Darren joined Twitter around 4 years ago and is using it to great success – not only building relationships with local contacts, but more importantly, generating real business.

“When I first joined Twitter, it felt like I was constantly using it,” says Darren, as Claudia nods in wry agreement. “But I knew I needed to spend time building up my followers, so I started following lots of people and tweeting interesting stuff, which gradually started to pay off. We now have over 3,500 followers, so I don’t need to spend as much time tweeting, although I still try to post at least three times most days.”

“I don’t use Twitter to ‘sell’ online, as people don’t want that. Instead, I try to engage with people, show the human side of the business and help them by answering queries wherever possible.

“Since then, we’ve built up our Facebook page, which now has almost 800 ‘fans’ – we find that’s a great way to showcase our installation images and demonstrate the quality of our work.

“We find it makes us stand out, as not many of our competitors are ‘doing’ social media – or certainly not very well – and it definitely helps to erase the image people used to have of the pushy double-glazing salesman.

“As well as raising the profile of Glazedale in the local area, social media has actually generated orders, with add-on work where we’ve subsequently been recommended to neighbours and also gone back for repeat business.”

After a long period of stagnation the construction industry has finally started to grow again. New homes are being built and there is a growing appetite with homeowners to move or improve their properties. All good news for the Glazing Industry who are benefiting from the uplift.

Lister Trade Frames, based in Stoke on Trent, have seen several recessions over

the years, having traded since 1976. This year though has seen them report record growth in the half year to date with their commercial works showing over 80 percent rise compared to the same period last year.

Listers primary business activity is the manufacture and supply of windows, doors and conservatories to Trade Installers. In fact they have won the national ‘Fabricator of the Year’ award three times in the last nine years along with many other awards for their work in this area. Mark Warren, Listers Managing Director says that while this remains the main focus of the business they have diversified into new markets and this is now adding to their success.

“It’s great to see our trade installation partners with full order books once again after a few lean years.” says Mark, “Listers continues to add new products and services for our customers and this is driving growth and we have also been very successful in growing our commercial installations business which is now delivering exceptional results.”

Listers ended 2013 with a 10% rise in sales, adding over £800,000 to their turnover and in the first six months of 2014 they have reported a 20% increase on those 2013 results.

“We’re really pleased with the half year results and although this has put a lot of stress on the business we have been working very hard behind the scenes to increase our service to customers. We have a lot of new products about to launch which will give our trade customers even more opportunities to grow their businesses with us.”

Listers are now benefiting from the rise in business that the construction is enjoying. There’s no doubt that there will be tests ahead in a more active and perhaps more discerning market place as consumers become ever more demanding. However, Listers believes that they are well placed to meet those demands and their track record continues to underpin that belief.

This July saw VEKA fabricator Stevenswood relocate from its home of 17 years as it completed a move to a new, purpose-built facility in Grange Road, Livingston.Established in 1997, the Scottish fabricator quickly outgrew its original 8,000 square feet premises, eventually occupying six units totalling 28,000 square feet on the Houstoun Trading Estate in Livingston, near Edinburgh.

Stevenswood has always been an advocate of lean and efficient manufacturing – a principle embraced in its new 55,000 square foot factory, which allows all processes to take place under one roof. Now, a month since production started, MD, Ron Hepburn outlines the progress Stevenswood has made and the manufacturing capacity the new factory presents: “After a great move, we're now comfortably making in

excess of 900 frames a week. With the move, we added a new URBAN four-head CNC corner cleaner, a third Stuga and a new four-head horizontal welder, complementing the existing URBAN six-head and eight-head CNC welders, and moving us to a weekly capacity of around 1,500 by early September. The next phase is to introduce five, ten-hour shifts a week, effectively increasing our weekly production time from 38.25 to 50 hours. That'll see us hitting a target of around 2,000 frames a week, making us Scotland's number one trade fabricator and one of the top 10 in the UK!”

Stevenswood distributes through its own chain of six trade counters across Scotland, with offers made on further units in Inverness and Carlisle. It has also just ordered two twelve and one eight-ton Mercedes-Benz trucks to supplement the existing fleet.

Buoyed by the support of VEKA, the industry's leading PVC-U systems supplier, Stevenswood has promised a

range of pioneering new features, made possible by its investment in state-of-the-art machinery. Ron continues: “All-in-all we've spent over £1.7 million in the factory and equipment, but we're confident that the long-term benefits will justify the outlay. I'm happy to say the move took place without disruption to our customers, and our standards of service will now surpass their already impeccable levels. It's beyond doubt that having the VEKA name behind us has been a massive help in reaching this milestone. Other fabricators looking to emulate our success would be wise to consider working with such a trusted brand.”

Barnsley-based Sash UK is a long-standing, well-respected VEKA fabricator that has been working with the systems supplier for 27 years.Sash UK, which celebrates 50 years in business next year, has now been officially recognised as a VEKA ‘Approved Fabricator’ to support the new Approved Installer scheme.

Unveiled earlier this year, one of the criteria for becoming an Approved Installer is that products must be bought through an Approved Fabricator. As an official Approved Fabricator, Sash UK can now support its installer customers in becoming VEKA Approved.

The Approved Installer initiative allows companies to prove their commitment to quality and attract new customers with a range of professional marketing materials, including newly-designed items that are exclusive to Approve Installers. It is free to join and Approved Installers will benefit

from homeowner sales leads generated via a dedicated consumer-facing website.

Stephen Morrell Sash UK MD explains: “When The VEKA UK Group unveiled the Approved Installer scheme, we were quick to show our support.

“It’s a good way for us to encourage more installers to buy high quality VEKA materials through us. This means increased repeat business, and it’s also beneficial to homeowners in the local area who will be supplied with some of the highest quality systems in the industry.”

Amy Grundy, National Sales Manager, Installer Scheme, adds: “We’re thrilled that Sash UK has become a ‘VEKA Approved Fabricator’. We’ve worked with the team for years and we’re delighted to be supporting them in this next stage of their business growth.”

“We’re looking forward to working with their installer customers through the Approved Installer initiative.”

Synseal has published an authoritative technical brochure detailing its proven and advanced K2 conservatory roof system. The no-nonsense K2 roof brochure presents all the key design features including the adjustable eaves beam connector, jack rafter, glass paddle valley glazing stop, self-supporting box gutter with internal brace, choice of aluminium or PVC-U end caps and fixed or variable ridge options providing roof pitch adjustment from 17.5o to 37.5o. Cross-section drawings and glazing bar assembly summaries provide a handy technical reference source. A style guide illustrates the range of popular footprint design options, colour finishes and roof glazing specifications which include Synseal’s exclusive Celsius performance glass. A special section also details the very latest Capella modular orangery options, which can be specified to transform a standard K2 conservatory into an aspirational hybrid orangery.

The new K2 conservatory roof technical brochure is crammed with information and has been designed to fit into Synseal’s specification literature folder. The Synseal branded ring-bound technical folder has been well received by design and build specifiers and contains comprehensive yet concise information on every one of the company’s sub-branded product ranges - which is provided by individual technical brochures - so the folder’s contents can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

Mark Schlotel, Synseal’s Head of Marketing comments: “This new K2 roof technical brochure presents hard factual information with no “sales speak” in an easy-to-use format and complements our existing Global conservatory roof technical brochure. These Synseal specifier publications are useful when roofing fabricators, retailers or installers enquire about our products and services, enabling us to table a choice of proven and high quality conservatory roof solutions for their consideration: Global or K2.”

TuffX Processed Glass has been at the forefront of high performance, solar control, self-cleaning roof glass design for over 10 years, ensuring that customers can offer unique products that will help to create more business opportunities than ever beforeThis progressive approach to energising the industry has reaped many benefits for the company with customers impressed by quality standards and reliable services offered.

Conservatories have become more dynamic in terms of design and consumers more demanding in the performance of products installed. As such senior management at TuffX are keenly aware that it is vital to offer customers as much support and substantiation of product as possible when approaching the consumer.

Graham Price, Managing Director, states that offering tailored websites and well-presented glass samples has helped to bring customers positive results and improved business opportunities which positive sales figures prove.

Furthermore working alongside renowned glass companies has enabled the

company to branch out and grow a product range for conservatory installers that offers vast choice to ensure that the market has more options and room for growth.

The TuffX team recognises that understanding the individual style of the homeowner is pivotal to winning business. Providing customers with more in terms of style, colour and performance has been a focus for the company, which has now reached a new milestone in increased month on month sales.

As conservatory design has developed over the last 10 years, consumers have become increasingly aware of conservatory roof glass product performance. Additionally they have quickly grasped that through aesthetics they can add value and reduce expensive energy bills at the same time thanks to roof glasses that provide temperature control.

As such the demand for high quality performance glass roofing units has increased considerably due to thermal efficiency, simple installation, heat reflection and of course colour and easy maintenance which appeals to the homeowner.

The launch of a modern interactive website that was designed to be individualised for customers was novel and has proven very popular nationally for TuffX, with many customers stating that this facility has helped to boost sales.

With many homeowners now wanting to understand how products perform, the TuffX team has created literature and samples that would make it easy for the consumer to understand the performance differences between the glasses.

The environmental impact of energy consumption has become a major focus for homeowners with many now driven to achieve optimum results within their home. By providing customers with neat glass samples which include the individual capabilities of each glass type, has also proven to be a major benefit for the Ambience conservatory roof glass range.

The TuffX portfolio has also been carefully developed to provide the right solutions in relation to solar control roof glasses.

Graham Price comments, “Ensuring our customers stay ahead is a priority for the entire team. We aim to

give them as much support as possible when converting leads to sales. The TuffX range provides maximum choice in relation to glare, reflection, light transmission and privacy.

He concludes, “As the environmentally aware consumer continues to drive the market we feel it is important that our customers can educate them and leave them fully aware of product capabilities. That combined with the reliability of our national delivery fleet which can deliver direct to site or to factories, gives our customers greater confidence when securing sales. We will always remain focused on design and innovation to ensure our customers stay ahead in a competitive market.”

Window Ware - the one-stop shop for door and window hardware, tools, fixings, and consumables has increased their stock-holding with a brand new range of spray lacquers. This follows the exciting news that they’ve just signed up to exhibit at the Buildshow, a brand new show dedicated to the building and construction industry taking place at the NEC in October 2015.

The range of spray lacquers are currently available in chartwell green, anthracite grey, slate grey, black, cream, and irish oak - perfect for

spraying accessories or trims for those jobs where a special colour is required. The spray lacquer is supplied in 400ml cans, and is touch dry in just 30 seconds. There is no base coat or top coat needed, so spraying your product from start to finish takes minutes.

Product manager Richard Bryant said the sprays were a welcome addition due to the number of customers who are now fitting a wider range of coloured windows and doors

“With the demand growing for coloured windows and doors – matching up accessories such as trickle vents and trims can be tricky to get hold of with box quantities and lead times often ending up being too long or too costly, particularly when only a small quantity is required. Our lacquer sprays solve all these potential issues as you simply spray the accessories in your desired colour to get the job completed quickly and effectively”.

“They have been going down well in the trade counter, and we’ve already solved a number of our customer’s colour matching issues by recommending the sprays”

This launch continues the company’s development programme that has already seen a brand new redeveloped Trade Counter, the launch of a wide range of architectural ironmongery from leading brand Carlisle Brass, and the launch of a new trade catalogue.

Hardware supplier VBH has added monkey tail espag handles and dummy casement stays to the greenteQ range of door and window furniture.VBH advise that greenteQ’s Monkey Tail has been designed specifically as an espagnolette handle, rather than modified from an existing casement fastener and that window manufacturers and end-users receive a number of benefits as a result.

To eliminate the unsightly machining marks associated with the modification of casement fasteners, the backplate is a bespoke precision cast component. This also provides the product consistency necessary for modern window production lines. The handle’s ‘Lift to Turn’ function prevents handle droop on top hung sashes and guards against external manipulation. Full key locking is provided by the working cylinder.

To complement the Monkey Tail handle, there is also a non-handed greenteQ Monkey Tail Dummy Casement Stay. This is a purely decorative item that fits to the bottom of the opening

sash to replicate a casement stay and peg, thus completing the ‘traditional illusion’.

Gary Gleeson of VBH commented ‘Everyone appreciates the comfort and benefits of high performance modern windows with their thermal efficiency and security features. However, many end users desire a traditional appearance to windows that current contemporary handles cannot provide. The answer to this is the greenteQ Monkey Tail espagnolette handle, which works with the latest security espagnolettes and shootbolts and is an ideal product to fit to timber and the decorative and coloured PVCu windows that are so popular now.’

Both the handle and stay are finished in hard wearing Antique Black powder coat and are covered by the 10 year greenteQ guarantee.

Investment in new despatch facilities at Carl F Groupco supports the hardware supplier’s commitment to service. The established distributor has accommodated over 200 door bolt options in new racking that doubles the size of its locking product storage capability and enhances selection. The services of Link51, a leading storage solution company, were used to design racking specifically to meet Carl F Groupco’s needs – this included the challenge of many lock systems exceeding two metres.

The special racking commissioned by Carl F Groupco resulted from a comprehensive site-survey and design: the result was a solution that covers the same footprint as the previous storage system but extends to eight metres in height to cater for the company’s extensive product range.

Investment is set to continue in despatch services with robotic pallet wrapping technology due to be purchased which will increase the speed of packing and cater for the company’s wide range of shipping requirements.

Latest hardware to be added to Carl F Groupco’s range is manufactured by Siegenia and designed specifically for aluminium windows. With features to ease fabrication and installation of tilt & turn windows, and advancements that simplify component selection, the ALU 4200 and ALU axxent product lines are designed to have strong appeal to the window industry.

Siegenia’s hardware advancement addresses the fact that traditional solutions for this market have often required a complicated buying and fitting process. Initiatives for the ALU series include non-handed and pre-assembled components to enhance installation and stock control.

Other key features include clampable hinge-side frame components. Vertical and horizontal locks are identical, which reduces stock holding as the components are interchangeable. Three pieced hinge ends are flush, and inline with the sash profile to enhance aesthetics. Using push rod technology

designed for the profile, the system can be fitted to different size windows without increasing stock holding.

The product has a maximum weight of 130kg and is available with an extensive range of accessories. The ALU axxent is a concealed version of the hardware.

One of the UK’s leading window and door manufacturers, Nationwide Windows has heaped praise on Avocet’s Affinity 3D hinge – a product that is so simple it can be adjusted using just an Allen key. Daryl Cashmore, operations director of Nationwide, said: “We’ve been using Avocet’s 3D hinge for close to two years and in that time not one of our installers has had a bad word to say about it.”

Nationwide’s supply only clients have also been quick to praise the level and ease of the hinge adjustment, highlighting it as a real benefit.

“Put simply,” added Daryl. “Avocet’s 3D hinge is the best and easiest to use on the market.”

The 3D hinge, which is available as an individual product or as part of Avocet’s Composite Door Hardware Package, is PAS024 compliant, has Secured by Design approval, can hold up to 150kg on three hinges, is available in a huge range of colours, and doesn’t require face fixed flag fixings.

In addition, as the only truly active 3D butt hinge available for composite doors in the UK it can be actively adjusted in

three dimensions without needing to reset the door position. And because the product is so simple to adjust the only tool an installer will need is an Allen key.

Christopher Burrows, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales (window & door hardware division), said: “To say we’re proud of the 3D hinge would be an understatement of massive proportions. It demonstrates everything good about Avocet in terms of product development and innovation, and is a clear indication of

where we’re planning to take the company under the ownership of the Jain family.”

“As a manufacturer we are fully aware that you live or die by the quality of your products, and what we’ve found under the new ownership is that our products don’t just stand up to scrutiny, they pass with flying colours.”

“And what’s more – they’re getting better because we are committing more people and more money to product development than ever before.”

Avocet’s Composite Door Hardware Package contains only high quality, Secured by Design approved product solutions. In addition to the 3D hinge are its Affinity door handles, Affinity face fit door knocker, Affinity letter plate, and the ABS snap secure cylinder lock – the only retrofit lock on the market with Sold Secure’s Diamond stand and the TS007 3-star kitemark. The company’s confident in these products is such that the package is offered with a £2,000 door security guarantee, which means that if a break-in occurs as a direct result of one of them being at fault then Avocet will provide £1,000 to replace the door and £1,000 in compensation to the homeowner.

Christopher Burrows, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales (window & door hardware division) talks economics, product design and hinges with My Trade TV.“According to recent reports, the UK’s economy will grow faster than any of the other G7 Nations over the remainder of the year and will soon be back to its pre-recession size.

Obviously a great number of factors have played significant roles in this economic revival; amongst them the changing fortune of the housing market. Buoyed by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, which has put the first step back onto the property ladder back within reach of millions of Britons, property prices are growing and, most importantly from the point of view of everyone operating in our market sectors, the number of new homes being built is growing significantly.

What this means to the likes of Avocet is that things have turned full circle and it is once again the features and benefits of a product that make it stand out from the crowd as opposed to solely the price. This features and benefits led approach was clearly in evidence when we first launched our Affinity Easy Fit 3D hinge back in early 2010.

At the time we focused strongly on its innovative design, which made it quicker, easier and simpler to fabricate and install. Much was made of the fact it only had four parts and that its butt design made it perfect for fitting and adjusting in a reveal.

In fact, the list of benefits went on and on – a patented independent compression adjustment to ensure against lateral movement when adjusting compression; the fact it was non-handed, which meant it was symmetrical no matter how it was positioned or adjusted; its PAS024 compliance; and let’s not forget it looked great, matched our suite of Affinity door handles and was available in a range of different colours and finishes.

But then when the recession hit, and then hit again, all of this went out of the window (or should that be door?). Housebuilding stagnated, sales slowed dramatically and buying decisions became price driven, which really had an adverse impact on top end products such as our Affinity Easy Fit 3D hinge.

This, remember, was a product that had been designed to stand out from the crowd. It was the cream of the crop and the industry loved it. Over 22,000 units were snapped up in its first month on the market and the feedback was astonishing – especially in terms of speed of installation; with Garrard Windows saying it saved them an astonishing two minutes on every single door they fabricated.

Fast forward to today; with the economy growing and the market picking up it’s important to remember that products such as these were designed not to be the cheapest, but the best – a message that is already sinking in judging by the significant increase in sales of the Affinity hinge we’ve seen since the start of 2014.

But for those still sticking with the recessionary tactic of buying the cheapest product, it is worth noting that while ours may cost more per unit, when judged against time of installation, reliability, performance and style it really is the only sensible choice.”

When Haffner Murat’s SMR-4 welder was introduced to the market last year, it was billed as being revolutionary. It seems that the market more than agreed with this verdict as sales of the machine are soaring. Dave Thomas, Haffner Murat’s Managing Director, said, “The SMR-4 welder solves a perennial problem for fabricators, adding value to the bottom line immediately, so I’m not surprised it’s proving such a hit.”

The SMR-4 welder is the first welder on the market to eliminate the problem of corner weld misalignment in the fabrication process. This is because it can auto-align corners as well as transoms. Even if the arrow head is slightly out, it still welds the transom at 90 degrees. Quite simply, it removes the need for a skilled operator and eliminates costly remakes, saving time and money.

The welder’s automatic head position offers other benefits apart from eliminating remakes. It also means there is no need for set squares or aligning tools. Other automatic features include automatic transom fences, automatic corner fences and automatic transom

and mullion alignment, all of which will dramatically speed up the production process and increase quality. The welder also offers a retracting middle corner fence, three square welding and an on screen window display that makes checking progress easy. Finally, drop down support arms help to anchor small frames, making the production of these much easier.

Dave concludes, “The problem of corner weld misalignment was a problem in the industry for years. I’m delighted that the SMR-4 has solved it and I’m delighted that its innovation is proving so valuable to fabricators.”

Haffner Murat supplies a range of new and refurbished sawing machinery, routing machinery, welding machinery, corner cleaning machinery, beading machinery and aluminium machinery. Its new machines are from Haffner Murat and it is the UK supplier of ITALMAC aluminium fabrication machinery. All refurbished machinery is fully reconditioned before sale and comes with a six month warranty. At Stuga there is always an interest in why so many British and Irish uPVC window and door frame fabricators like to deal with the company and although there are normally several answers many of them repeat and so attempts are made to reinforce what it is they like.

THe MacHineS

Stuga sawing and machining centers are well known for being easy to operate and easy to understand when it comes to keeping them going. In other words they are not overly complicated and use simple systems that most people can deal with. They also tend to do exactly what they are claimed to do with regards to operations and output. It is easy for anyone to make inflated claims about machinery output and many do this, whereas Stuga will calculate output accurately and then guarantee it against measurable criteria.

frienDLy STaff

Stuga has a reputation for friendly staff and with a very low staff turnover everyone gets to know how the company and the people work which is reassuring going forward.

SOfTware

What is worse than software that doesn’t work properly and having to get a third party in another country to resolve this? Stuga software is written by Stuga staff and looked after by Stuga staff. Updates are free and always readily available. Liaison with First Degree and Business Micros is by Stuga.

back-uP

This is the key one for most people. Stuga has a team of seven geographically based service engineers covering the whole of UK and Ireland. They are fully trained by Stuga and specialize in Stuga machines so they are not expected to be experts on many different types, which is critical when it comes to getting them back into production as fast as possible when things go wrong. The field service team is backed up by in-house staff here in the United Kingdom, speaking our language and in our time zone, taking the same bank holidays as us. The in-house team is able to monitor software issues and machine operation online as well as see each machine in the field as it works with onboard cameras that give sound as well as vision. These cameras can also be used to record events for later analysis.

Haffner Murat’s Managing Director Dave Thomas announced this week that expansion at Murat’s Istanbul site is continuing apace. He said, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Murat because they are committed to fabricators’ success. The success of this approach is reflected in increasing sales growth which is driving the need to expand.”Haffner has been working in partnership with Turkey’s Murat Makina since 2012. Murat, which also manufactures the Haffner machinery range at its 25,000sqm facility in Istanbul, manufactures over 4,000 machines per year and supplies over 90 countries worldwide. The company is renowned for offering superb quality at an exceptional price, something that Dave Thomas knows his customers value. “Murat’s production volume, coupled with the lower overheads in Turkey means that its prices compete with even the cheapest British-made machines. But despite the low price you still get an exceptional machine with top quality parts such as Beckhoff controls, Festo pneumatics and Hiwin bearings, the back-up of a design team, dedicated engineers who can answer your enquiries out of office hours and a two year no quibble warranty on all new machinery.”

Murat’s commitment to excellence is perhaps best illustrated in its willingness

to develop new machinery to meet fabricator need. The perfect example of this is the SMR-4 welder, which was developed by Dave Thomas in conjunction with the Murat team. The machine eliminates the problem of corner weld misalignment in the fabrication process and is currently one of Haffner Murat’s best selling machines.

Dave concludes, “I’m delighted to be in partnership with Murat. The commitment to going above and beyond in all areas of the business matches my own belief. The ongoing expansion at the Istanbul plant will enhance what the company has to offer even further and I am looking forward to continuing to work with them.”

Haffner Murat supplies a range of new and refurbished sawing machinery, routing machinery, welding machinery, corner cleaning machinery, beading machinery and aluminium machinery. The Triple Glazing Question (TGQ) is a finalist in The 2014 Peer Awards for Excellence in Corporate Responsibility. The industry initiative led by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, made the top grade in the Education of the Community category.

On 24 June Edgetech’s Managing Director Andy Jones and Marketing Coordinator Charlotte Davies presented the TGQ’s entry to other finalists in the category at the Royal Bank of Scotland Head Office on Bishopsgate in London.

Andy Jones explains why it was important to enter TGQ into these awards: “TGQ was a collaboration in the industry and we believed this way of working would be interesting and relevant to other companies and organisations. Getting to the finals means top level recognition for the successful event.”

The Peer Awards recognise those people and organisations that are developing

inspirational initiatives that improve life for customers, businesses and society.

Andy adds: “At the Peer Conference all the finalists get together to present ideas to each other. There’s diversity in the entries that you just wouldn’t get elsewhere. In our group – Educating the Community – we were up against British Gas and The Royal College of General Practitioners. Other finalists included British Airways, Sainsburys, SAP and Phillips.

“Our entry went through the reasoning behind creating the TGQ and how we managed to deliver it to such a wide audience. We were promoting the idea of working in collaboration with other companies in the industry. This was well received and we took many questions from the floor afterwards.

“It was a very interesting day. The winners are announced on Monday 22 September. But against such a high calibre of companies we believe getting to the finalists category is winning in itself.”

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the next generation of digital representation for architectural projects and Guardian Glass UK have strived to meet the needs of a changing market, with BIM objects created for all Guardian Glass UK products.“The way architectural projects are being designed and created is changing” states Paul Anderson Guardian Glass UK Architectural Sales Manager, “there is a growing need for specified glass to be supported with BIM objects. Staying ahead of these new innovative processes is paramount to ensure we can provide the right products and support required to meet the needs of project design teams, from specification through to construction.”

Guardian’s BIM objects allow glass to be specified either as a design material in its own right, or in single, double or triple glazing, with data variations to account for laminated glass and other glass processes such as heat treatments. All of the products available for commercial construction have been modelled from clear annealed float to coated and laminated products such as SunGuard and ClimaGuard. Other decorative products have also been modelled such as our SatinDeco.

To ensure all products are easily accessible we have a listing in the National Building Specification (NBS) BIM Library, as well as objects hosted on all of our website product pages and within the Guardian Plus Technical Centre. All of which can be found at www.guardianglass.co.uk.

Each of our BIM objects have been made available in Revit and IFC format, which are the leading systems for creating BIM projects. To help architects, designers, and other BIM professionals understand how our objects work in the BIM environment a short demonstration video has been produced to explain the use of Guardian glass products as BIM objects. The video is available on our BIM home page at www.guardianglass.co.uk/architectural/bim.

The GGF was disappointed to hear this week, that newly appointed Energy Minister Amber Rudd has been forced to shut down the Green Deal money back schemeThe Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) “with immediate effect” after it was overwhelmed by a last-minute “dash for cash”. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have blamed a sudden surge in applications for clearing out £70 million of ring-fenced budget in just two days, the entire £120m budget was intended to last 12 months.

In a statement, DECC confirmed that the allocated budget has now been reached and “all applications received prior to the fund closing that satisfy the terms and conditions and meet the eligibility criteria will be honoured at the original rates”.

The GDHIF was set up to boost the Green Deal scheme as a replacement to the Green Deal Cashback scheme which had failed to boost the original Green Deal scheme. The difference with the GDHIF was that it was available through

Green Deal Installers as well as Green Deal Providers. Under the GDHIF, the homeowner/consumer only has to have two measures installed to get the cash, provided they go through the Green Deal process - they don’t necessarily have to take out a Green Deal Plan.

The GDHIF was intended to boost the uptake of the Green Deal scheme and subsequently help households in England and Wales improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “The sudden closure of the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund is a disappointment as it was intended to last for a long period of time and offer stability to Green Deal, yet it has ended after roughly two months from its inception.”

Energy Minister Amber Rudd commented: “The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund is a world first and in a short space of time it has proved extremely popular. We were always clear there was a budget, which is why we encouraged people to act quickly. As a result, thousands more families will now benefit from Government help to have warmer homes which use less energy.”

Nigel Rees continued, “The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund has done virtually nothing for the window industry as homeowners only qualified for the fund, if they were replacing single glazing. This was a relatively pointless requirement because there’s very little single glazing in owner occupier homes. It’s fair to say, no other industry had such a proviso put upon them and yet again the window industry has been offered practically nothing from this initiative. With such low impact during its existence there will be little difference to the replacement window industry now that it has closed.”

DECC has stated it will monitor voucher redemption rates and will consider whether to launch a new offer in the future should further funds become available.

Various members of the London Region, recently attended the Irish Night – race meeting at the Royal Windsor Race Course. This is fast becoming an annual event for the region, which provides members with a unique opportunity to network in the informal surroundings offered by the venue. The original idea was conceived by past Regional Chairman Michael Deanus, and has since been continued by current Chairman, GG Glass and Glazing Director Sam Grant.

The darkening clouds that circled overhead early evening, did little to damper the enthusiasm of those attending, nor prevent the odd fiver being pushed in the direction of the grateful bookmakers. It was clear that the ladies in the party were far more

adept at choosing winners than their ‘all knowing’ male partners. Mann McGowan’s Kevin Hulin tried his usual system of betting on any jockey that resembled West Ham’s claret and blue colours. Clearly he should consider following a different football team.

GG Glass and Glazing’s John Grant was very quiet about his selections, but revealed at the end of the meeting that the evening had not cost him a penny. We are unsure if this means, his other half was financing his betting, or he had some winners and losers.

Paul Rogers from Express Glazing Contractors won, albeit tickets to a rugby game to watch London Irish. We are sure his wife Jill would have preferred if he had been as lucky on his nag selection.

Despite the vagaries of the sport, a thoroughly enjoyable evening was enjoyed

by the members and their guests, and no doubt the 2015 event will soon be logged in the diaries of those present.

The members would like to thank Regional Secretary Peter Stuttard for organising the event and GGF Health, Safety and Environment Manager Victoria Shelly for attending at short notice.

The London Region tries to encourage these events to promote business via the membership and the wider glazing and construction sectors. For information on the region and its activities, please contact Peter Stuttard, GGF London Region Secretary on [email protected]

The GGF would like to thank Kevin Hulin of Mann McGowan (London Region Member) for contributing this article.

For the second successive year, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is sponsoring the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) Awards. This year the GGF award is for “Best Home Improvement Glazing Project” and the GGF invites all companies in the Home Improvement sector to enter this prestigious competition.

Since 1974 the NHIC Annual Awards have recognised achievement in the UK housing arena and have grown over the years to become the premier event in their sector. In recent years the awards scheme has attracted entries from across the spectrum of housing modernisation projects as well as associated activities

such as energy efficiency, renewable technologies, safety and design.

The winner of the award will be invited (with guest) to the special awards lunch held in the prestigious venue – One Whitehall Place, Westminster. The winner will receive the award at the lunch and will benefit from the extensive PR this event enjoys with acknowledgments on print, online and on plaques and certificates. The event is also being covered by the trade media but all press materials will be covered on the NHIC consumer website and the GGF website.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “The GGF is delighted to sponsor the glazing category at the NHIC Awards. The Federation is active member of the NHIC and I’d encourage all

home improvement companies to enter our Best Home Improvement Glazing Project.”

In previous years the winners of the GGF Awards have enjoyed not just the event itself but also the publicity gained from winning this prestige prize. Including the GGF the other current sponsors and category titles are:

• Bathroom Manufacturers Association - Home Improvement Journalist of the Year

For the fifth year in a row, Thermoseal Group is sponsoring the Champagne Reception at the prestigious G-Awards Gala Dinner presentation evening held on Friday 21 November 2014 at London's world-famous Hilton Hotel on Park Lane. The Group's Managing Director, Gwain Paterson comments: "Sponsoring the G-Awards champagne reception is our contribution to what has always been a great evening. We were one of the earliest sponsors of the event and enjoy seeing its continued success.”

The past few years have been a challenge for Thermoseal Group in setting up our own manufacturing facility for two warm edge spacers -Thermobar and now Thermoflex. In addition, we have invested in setting up our own innovation centre to develop our warm edge spacers and maintain and improve the quality of all of the insulated glass components we supply. We also have various patents currently in application for next-generation products. Our investment is in excess of £5 million and growing.

“In line with our growing warm edge spacer production facility we have also developed the Group's

infrastructure to ensure that the high quality service we offer is a

continuing focus. We have purchased additional

buildings, maximised space in current depots, purchased additional larger vehicles, taken on many new members of staff and strengthened our facilities and resources ready for growth into the worldwide market. We look forward to discussing our growth and product development with our customers.”

“The G14 Awards event is a great forum for us to meet up with customers and industry contacts and we sponsor the champagne reception as our way of raising a glass to a bright future with our customers. We wish everyone good luck in their nominated awards categories.”

Thermoseal Group is the largest specialist insulated glass component manufacturer and distributor in the UK. As active members of the Glass and Glazing Federation and the Bundesverband Flachglas the Group is set to lead the industry forward.

Synseal is proud to have joined a select group of prominent industry brands who have invested in main event sponsorship of the G14 Awards. This year’s much-anticipated event, rightly considered to be the Oscars of the UK glass and glazing industry, will take place at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Thursday 21st November and is sure to be a stylish night to remember.

Synseal’s G14 Awards sponsorship follows swiftly after the system supplier’s approved membership of the Glass & Glazing Federation incorporating the Conservatory Association was confirmed in April 2014 and, more recently, associate membership of the Home Builders Federation has also been secured.

David Leng, Chief Executive of Synseal, comments: “Synseal fabricator, installer and retailer customers regularly feature as G-Awards

category finalists or winners and we were keen to offer our sponsorship support this year, because any event that strives to champion the ‘best of the best’ quite rightly deserves to be applauded.”

“Our new participation in the GGF, CA and HBF is further evidence of our changing mindset at Synseal” continues David. “As successful UK market leaders with a broad product portfolio embracing windows and doors, conservatories, orangeries, vertical sliders, bi-folds, patios, hardware and now high volumes of insulated glass units, our experienced staff offer loads of technical expertise. Now is the time for Synseal to get more involved with the leading industry bodies and share our well-informed points of view, to help shape best practice.”

SWISSPACER took part in two open days at CWG Choices on the 22nd and 23rd July. Installers were attending the event to find out more about CWG Choices’ extensive product range. The UK’s leading warm edge spacer bar, SWISSPACER, is used by many window companies in their sales pitches to homeowners. CWG Choices chooses sealed units with SWISSPACER inside to give customers the best energy ratings. Installers were able to try SWISSPACER’s energy-calculating Caluwin app, which lets users calculate how much energy and money they will save with new windows.

Managing Director of CWG Choices, Jason Wilder says: “The open day was really successful. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet customers and talk about what products are available to them. SWISSPACER is the best warm edge spacer bar in the UK and we’re happy to tell customers about it.”

Vic De Costa, SWISSPACER’s Marketing and Sales Manager who attended both days adds: “It was brilliant being able to take part in the open day - Jason Wilder and the team at CWG Choices organised a very professional event.

“I’ve been on hand to talk to customers and provide more information about SWISSPACER and its benefits and demonstrate our Caluwin energy-calculating app. Feedback on the app was fantastic and installers I spoke to are now planning to use Caluwin on sales pitches.”

SWISSPACER has been specified in the design and construction of TechStyle Haus, an entry in the international Solar Decathlon Competition held in France. The house has been designed to be energy-efficient as well as liveable. The exterior of the house is made from high-performance textiles layered together to create a flexible yet durable outer shell that also harnesses solar power.

SWISSPACER ULTIMATE, the world’s leading warm edge spacer bar, is being used in the windows. With SWISSPACER inside, the house uses 90% less energy for heating and cooling than a traditional house. TechStyle Haus is the first building made by textiles entered into the competition that meets the Passivhaus standard.

Students are challenged by the Solar Decathlon competition to design and create innovative solar-powered houses while also considering energy efficiency, sustainability and affordability.

SWISSPACER Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales, Peter Appel says: “We’re delighted to be a part of this innovative new project which sees students from across the world compete to create the most energy-efficient and innovative solar-powered homes.”

“The TechStyle Haus is not only architecturally interesting but also demonstrates how SWISSPACER products can play a huge part in sustainability and energy-efficiency.”

TechStyle Haus was in Paris, France for the judging process, and it has now moved to Domaine de Boisbuchet where it will be used for student housing.

Brouha Marketing is excited to announce that it has been shortlisted for not one but two categories in the Chartered Institute of PR PRide South of England Awards. The agency has made the final cut in both the Low Budget Campaign and Integrated Campaign categories.

With a record number of entries this year - more than 1,100 – and the South a particularly hotly contested region, a shortlist in two categories is no mean feat, as Fiona Lund, Managing Director at Brouha explains: “It’s always fantastic to be recognised by our peers for the work that we do every day. We have regularly featured in the PRide Awards over the past 8 years, and what means a lot to us this year is that these categories reflect the real value we have

brought to our customers through the times of economic uncertainty and into the emerging recovery.”

“To be shortlisted for our work with Mortgage Business Expo and Decorative Door Products by RegaLead serves to endorse our achievements in the areas that matter to our clients – campaigns that work in tandem with their strategy and philosophy and create the biggest bang for their bucks.”

“It would be great to win on the night, but whatever

happens, it’s a huge achievement to make the finals.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone on the shortlist, and look forward to the ceremony in November.”

MRA Marketing is a 9 times winner, 15 times finalist and last year moved up to No. 1 in the CIM Agency League of the 50 agencies who’ve entered Construction Marketing Awards, so Mike is well qualified to judge. Mike and MRA Marketing have been at the forefront of brand building in the industry. His column

Internet specialist The Consultancy is at the forefront of developing online technologies for the windows and doors industry. With an impressive portfolio of clients including the development of interactive apps, websites and software for Door-Stop, Solidor and Quickslide, The Consultancy has helped transform the design and sales process within the industry.

But with more than 1.5 million apps available in the Apple app store and Google Play, what steps should businesses take when looking to develop their very first app?

Richie Thornton, Director at The Consultancy, oversees the whole process in developing applications, from the initial planning meetings to the finished product.

He said: “The first thing that normally comes to mind when people think of

apps are various games and humorous programmes we usually use a few times and delete ready for the next download. These are not what we class as apps, they are games, apps must function to meet needs and solve problems.

“If your app doesn’t make a task easier, it has no use. If you want to create an app you must first figure out why you want one and what you want it to achieve.

“Is it going to allow users to custom design and purchase your goods, view your products in their own home or provide something which eases the buying and ordering process? If the app doesn’t help your customers and your business, there is no point in having one.”

Statistics from technology experts Gartner reveal that more than half of purchases acted upon through marketing were made on a mobile device.

Richie added: “Apps should also provide a return on investment. There should be a direct way to buy your product or engage with your organisation. No one wants to jump from an app to begin the whole process again and purchase on a desktop.

“There should be a variety of ways to interact with your company throughout the app. Even if the customer doesn’t purchase the product they should still be exposed to your social media, website and company information.”

The key to a successful app is making it accessible across several different platforms.

Richie continued: “An app must work for Android, iPhone and iPad. Just because you can download an app on your mobile from the AppStore doesn’t mean it will work properly on your iPad.”

The Consultancy provides a full in-house service in app building, from the design stages to finished product.

Richie said: “We can help with concept development; many companies come to us with a simple idea and we are happy to help.”

Balls2 Marketing is nominated for three Pride Awards, the CIPR’s awards scheme that recognises excellence in public relations and communications work. The Derby-based PR and marketing agency is a finalist in Best Events for Triple Glazing Question (TGQ) hosted by Edgetech UK; the £20 eye test saved my life in the Healthcare Campaign category; and Outstanding Small Consultancy.

Over the last 12 months Balls2 Marketing has grown considerably. We now count some local businesses as clients, as well as continuing to expand within Andy Ball and Sarah Ball’s specialism glazing and construction.

As active participants Sarah and Gemma Bradley value the benefits of CIPR membership. Entering the awards is important to show the level of professionalism within the agency.

Sarah says: “Being finalists for the CIPR awards is very exciting. We are lucky to have

worked on some brilliant projects this year. We entered the TGQ and the £20 eye test as examples of what our clients have achieved.

“Being finalists for The Outstanding Small Consultancy recognises the breadth of knowledge in the agency. Essentially we’re geeks about marketing,” adds Sarah.

“We are always looking for ways to deliver great content in new ways. Social media has really grown this year and has played a big part in the success for 2014.”

The award ceremony for the Midlands Pride Awards is on 14 November. “It’s apt that winners will be announced at the Ricoh Arena as it was the venue chosen for the Best Event we’re nominated for with TGQ. It was a highly informative day attended by nearly 600 people from the glazing industry. We’re up against some formidable competition in all three categories so we are very happy to have made the finals.”

There may have been over 13,000 competitors taking part in last weekend’s Virgin Active London Triathlon but all eyes were on our much-loved team of Roofing Racers who brought immense pride to the roofing, roofline and window industries as they look set to smash this year’s charity target of £50,000.With sponsorship pledges so far totalling in excess of £35,000, thanks to the supreme efforts of everyone involved, both Macmillan Cancer Support and Great Ormond Street Hospital charities will be able to make a difference to many peoples’ lives. Made up of 36 teams of three that shared the three sporting disciplines that make up this grueling Triathlon, along with 53 individuals who tackled the whole course on an individual basis, the brave-hearted Roofing Racers tackled a 750 metre swim in the River Thames, a cycle race of 20 kilometres, together with a 5 kilometre sprint.

Whilst every athlete that took part was a winner, special credit goes to the following Roofing Racers who gave outstanding performances. Bernie Fyans became Roofing Racers’ Fastest Individual Man - achieving an impressive time of 01:15:55 - whilst the fastest individual woman was Chiara Mancuso with 01:29:49. Meanwhile, Thomas Horton, David Gitsham and Matthew Horton represented the fastest Roofing Racers’ team with an extraordinary time of 1:21:19.

After the event, more than 250 friends, family and colleagues of Roofing Racers attended the Tower Hotel, London to celebrate the day’s achievements where they enjoyed a fun “spoofs” awards ceremony, great food and dancing.

Marketing Manager at Roofing Racers, Stuart Base comments: “As England, Scotland and Wales enjoyed their most successful Commonwealth ever this summer, Roofing Racers put on an impressive show of their own with some outstanding team and individual efforts on the day. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thanks to all the

fantastic supporters who helped made this occasion yet another day to remember.”

Manager Director at SIG UK Exteriors, Philip Johns, comments: “We should be immensely proud of each and everyone of the Roofing Racers’ team. Thanks to their valiant efforts, not only are we looking to hand over record donations to our two chosen charities, but we have generated a real sense of pride and camaraderie in seeing participants from the roofing, roofline and window industries all come together as one team. It was particularly pleasing to see many first timers at this iconic event, as well as our ever-faithful regulars who return year after year. Each and everyone can hold their heads high as they savour their own personal triumphs and those of the Roofing Racers team,” adds Philip.

He concludes: “The popularity of Roofing Racers continues to grow steadily year-on-year and it is especially gratifying to know that both Great Ormond Street and Macmillan Cancer Support charities will continue to benefit enormously as a result of all our efforts. Indeed, over the last eight years, Roofing Racers has raised well over £300,000 for these two worthwhile causes.”

Stuart Base adds: “For those of you who still haven’t supported Roofing Racers, it’s not too late. All donations are welcome, no matter how big or small, so please pay tribute to your fellow industry colleagues and help make a difference. Simply visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RoofingRacers.”

If you wish to donate by cheque, please post to: Roofing Racers for Charity, Harding Way, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 3YJ.

On 8th August, 12 members of the RegaLead team set off from London’s Tower Bridge for the start of a gruelling 220 mile cycle ride in aid of this year’s chosen charity, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity (RDMCC). Having undertaken a huge amount of training, the company is pleased to announce that the challenge was completed in three days, with only a few mishaps along the way. Day one saw Team Marvellous make their way from London to Brighton – a challenge in itself - with a puncture the only drama, before boarding a ferry at the Port of Newhaven to take them to the French leg of the journey from Dieppe to Beauvais and then on to Paris across the second and third day.

A huge amount of money was raised along the way, as Joint Managing Director Guy Hubble explains: “We started out

the ride in high spirits, each dressed as a character from a Roald Dahl book. It was while we were travelling through France, during which time we encountered the tail end of Hurricane Bertha and one member was suffering from a bad knee injury, that we discovered we had beaten our £10,000 fundraising target for the year.

This was fantastic news and really kept us going. We covered roughly 70 miles each day through alternating blistering heat and storms and I’d like to extend special thanks to all the shirt sponsors, and of course to every member of Team Marvellous for their truly marvellous efforts.

“RDMCC is a fantastic and worthwhile charity, and we are all very passionate about raising as much money as possible to help them continue their good work. We may have beaten our target, but that’s no reason not to donate if you haven’t already and would like to, so please visit our Just Giving page and give whatever you can. Now we just need to decide what our big challenge will be next year.”

Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sights in South America, and the culmination of Sarah Ball and her daughter Stephanie’s magnificent Inca Trail trek in May 2015 through the Peruvian Andes. They will be trekking on Inca-paved paths and steps, the route takes them up through lush cloud forest to the demanding Dead Woman’s Pass at 4200m. Continually climbing up or dropping down, the trek is steep at times, and the altitude adds to the challenge. I’ve never done anything like this before,” says Sarah Ball, Communications Director of PR and marketing agency Balls2 Marketing. “But my youngest daughter Stephanie wanted to do something big to support four of her friends who’ve all been diagnosed with the same cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, over the last 8 years.

“The Inca Trail challenge called out to us both. I’ve always wanted to do this trip and doing it to support Macmillan Cancer Support makes it so worthwhile. One of my daughter’s friends is still undergoing treatment, but the others have all come through it and they’re OK. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma affects young people and it’s been horrible to see Stephanie’s friends and their families live through the uncertainty. That’s why when she suggested doing something in support, I wanted to pitch in. We

have to raise over £8,000 between the two of us, so we will be thinking of some fun ideas to help part people from their cash painlessly.”

The trip takes place in May 2015. Follow our training and fundraising antics on Stephanie and Sarah’s big trek to Peru on Facebook.

Padiham Glass Ltd has appointed Damian Wilkinson as Technical Services Manager. His role will be specific to planned and unplanned machinery maintenance, programming, technical support and internal training. Damian will be working closely with Trevor Crossley, who was appointed as Quality Assuarnce Manager in May 2014. Damian’s role is key in pushing forward the company’s vision of improving on quality whilst still delivering excellent service to a demanding market.

Padiham Glass Ltd has always put great emphasis on making investments and improvements to their business. There have been many such changes in recent months, and now Padiham Glass Ltd is proud to announce the appointment of Damian Wilkinson as Technical Services Manager.

Damian’s position has been created in response to recent the appointment of Trevor Crossley as Quality Assurance

Manager, and the two will work very closely together in implementing a continuous improvement plan throughout the company.

Speaking about the new role, Damian said he was settling in well, and it’s no wonder. “In about 1997 I started working for Padiham Glass Ltd as a trainee in the decorative department doing leadwork,” said Damian. “I actually only left just under a year ago to take on an opportunity to help a new company grow, so it feels like I never really left!”

Padiham Glass Ltd has been a family-run business since day one and continues to remain under the family’s leadership. The importance of family was something that Damian considered when he was approached about the role. “I was doing so much commuting at this other job that I had hardly any time at home. Not great when you’ve got three young ‘uns!” said Damian. “So when Anthony, the MD, asked me to come and see him to talk about what the business needed, it seemed like a

really good opportunity, a chance for me to develop the role and learn some new skills myself along the way.”

Padiham Glass Ltd has put a heavy focus on improving quality this year and Damian’s appointment will support the drive to produce better products in a more efficient way. So what does a Technical Services Manager do?

“Damian’s role will be specific to all planned and unplanned machinery maintenance”, said Anthony Clarkson, Managing Director of Padiham Glass Ltd, “as well as providing technical support and training to our production facility staff.”

Speaking further about Damian’s return to the business, Anthony said: “This is fantastic appointment for our operations as he will strengthen our manufacturing capabilities with his knowledge and experience.”

Prospect data supplier Windowbase is growing its team in response to demand, with the appointment of Kathleen Hanbury.Windowbase is the longest established supplier of glazing industry prospect data in the UK, targeting fabricators and installers involved in windows, doors, conservatories and curtain walling. Continuous research for almost 25 years means Windowbase has the UK’s most comprehensive and reliable database of companies in the industry.

“We provide companies of all shapes and sizes with the means to create their own cost-effective sales

leads, helping them find new customers and grow sales,” explains Windowbase Database Manager Neil Parsonson. “

Our data is used for direct mail and email, telesales, market research and more. Kathleen has joined us to strengthen both our interviewing and data checking departments. No record is added to Windowbase until it has been fully interviewed, after which we call back on a regular basis to check for changes.”

Neil continues: “Unlike other database companies, our interviewers work from blank questionnaires each time, so they are genuinely researching the market rather than simply

asking companies to confirm existing details. The data checking department updates Windowbase with the newly collected information and investigates more significant changes, to ensure they are correct.”

Kathleen came to Windowbase from the banking industry. She worked for Halifax before spending eight years with the Santander group but has also volunteered in the UK and Bulgaria.

“Kathleen’s communication and people skills are excellent, and her background in banking is ideal as she’s used to asking detailed and probing questions, as well as recognising the need for accuracy,” adds Neil.

National Plastics is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicholas Stone to National Sales Manager. The company, the largest independent trade counter network in the UK, has seen unprecedented growth in recent years, and shows no signs of slowing down, with new acquisitions, new products, and even more exciting plans in the pipeline.

Managing Director Geoff Foster said “Nick has been with National Plastics since 2007 and has played an integral role in the success of the business to date.

We had a number of very experienced applicants, all of whom had to go through an extremely rigorous interview process including external assessments. It was particularly pleasing that Nick’s experience, commitment to the business and the potential he brings, enabled us to identify the ideal candidate from within the business.”

Nick says, “I’m thrilled to have been selected for the role and very excited to work with an established team and drive sales forward across the entire business.”

Nick will join the senior management team in his new role from the 1st August 2014.

Following a period of growth, restructuring and increased focus on customer service, Padiham Glass Ltd is pleased to announce their appointment of Vida Cade as Sales and Marketing Executive.Vida brings a wealth of knowledge and a broad range of skills to the team at Padiham Glass Ltd, having previously been employed as marketing manager for a catering equipment company. Although completely new to the glass and glazing industry, Vida tells us a little bit about her background and what was it about the role at Padiham Glass Ltd that made her want to leave her job to venture into the world of IGU manufacturing.

“My first love has always been writing so I studied Creative Writing and Sociology at the University of Bolton,” said Vida. “Lots of people thought they were strange subjects to pair together but I reasoned that if you’re going to be a writer, you need to know your audience so a study of society seemed logical to me.”

Vida worked various retail jobs to get her through university, giving her experience within the broad spectrum of ‘customer service’. When she finished her role as a journalist for a regional newspaper, marketing seemed like the natural progression. Her inaugural marketing job with the catering equipment company gave her a real taste for commercial marketing and when the invitation came to apply for the role at Padiham Glass Ltd, she grabbed it with both hands.

“The fact that it was a brand new role, with no boots to fill gave me an enormous push,” Vida explained, “and I’m really looking forward to being able to put my stamp on the activities they want me to carry out.”

Vida joins the company during an exciting time. There are new products such as Pyrotherm™ - fire rated insulating glass units – joining the range and improvements being made to the storage and racking facilities in the warehouse to accommodate growth.

“I think my organisational skills are going to become a key part of implementing any marketing strategy here at Padiham Glass Ltd,” says Vida. “For the last couple of years marketing has been carried out on an ad hoc basis but there is a growing need for a real structure and plan how to push the business forward and the channels we use to do that.

I’m also really keen to get involved in staff engagement – colleagues often make the best marketing assistants they just don’t know it yet!”

Vida has already begun implementing new processes within the company which have helped to streamline the account application process for both customers and staff. She also has plans to revamp the website, making it easier to navigate and ensuring visitors to the site find the information relevant to them whether they are an architectural firm or a domestic householder.

Industry experts will understand the task that lies ahead for employees like Vida when it comes to the variety of cutting-edge products on the market. “In my first week I printed out a glossary of terms from one of Saint-Gobains’ support documents,” says Vida. “Before starting here, I had no idea what annealed or fritted glass was or even what a fan light was! Now I can listen to the conversations going on around me and understand at least half of it!”

Anthony Clarkson, Managing Director: “We are very excited to have Vida on board. Having a full-time and dedicated marketing person to create a strategy that harmonises with all departments fits in perfectly with our growth as a company and ensures that we remain ahead in delivering the finest quality products coupled with first class service. We look forward to a long and happy relationship with Vida as we continue to grow our business and product range for our valued customers.”

They just can’t get enough of the FIT Show – weeks after the 2014 event ended, literally hundreds are logging on and watching their favourite clips via YouTube and the FIT Show own TV portal http://www.fitshow.co.uk/fit-show-tv. Biggest hits among exhibitors included Batimet, Eurosash, Big Wipes, Georgian Bar Co and Chase Taylor, while many clicked onto reminders of the superb Gala Dinner with cabaret by comic ventriloquist Nina Conti.

Hosted by lively presenters Kirsty and Nicky, more than a dozen clips together give over an hour of review of the show, the exhibitors and the 5,000-plus visitors who made it such a success.

In just the first few weeks after the show – at The Telford International Centre – nearly 600 people had watched clips, with the number of ‘likes’, comments and shares growing all the time.

FIT Events Managing Director Paul Godwin said: “There was such a buzz about the whole show and the response to the TV clips shows they have caught it perfectly.”

The three-day show itself was a resounding success and over 80% of the exhibition stand space was rebooked for the next FIT Show in 2016 within a week of the 2014 event closing. “April 2016 seems a long way off,” said Paul, “but it will soon be upon us. Space is limited so talk to us now if you would like to take part – information is on the web site at www.fitshow.co.uk.’
