WINDOWS

Pontcanna is a district in Cardiff that’s rich in heritage and consequently much of it is in a Conservation Area. So when one Pontcanna homeowner wanted to replace the windows in his turn-of-the-century property, not only did he want to make the most of his home’s original heritage, he was bound by the regulations to do so.The property had originally had timber sash windows, but these had been replaced forty or fifty years ago by timber casements. The homeowner wanted to replace the ageing and out-of-keeping casements windows to bring back the original period looks and approached local family-owned fabricator and installer The Welsh Glasshouse for advice. The company introduced him to the Genesis vertical slider developed by Bison Frames and he was immediately impressed with its authentic detailing of a traditional sliding sash with all the added thermal efficiency and low maintenance benefits of a PVC-u window.

Of course, because the house was in a Conservation Area, the homeowner needed to have his choice of window approved by the conservation department of the City of Cardiff Council. Shaun Armstrong of The Welsh Glasshouse takes up the story, saying, “The conservation department officer was initially very sceptical, as we had expected. But we worked closely with the homeowner and Bison Frames over a period of weeks to provide all the documentation and samples that were required. In the end the department was happy that the Genesis met all the criteria, especially in relation to the look and appeal of a traditional vertical slider. We were delighted!”

Once the homeowner and The Welsh Glasshouse had got the permission required, work rapidly commenced. The inefficient and unattractive timber casements were replaced with 14 authentically beautiful and thermally

efficient Genesis windows with Chartwell Green exteriors and white interiors – and the results are stunning.

Shaun Armstrong comments, “It is testament to the design of Genesis and the meticulous attention to detail by Bison to replicate the windows of 100 years ago that we got the approvals required. It’s great news for other homeowners in the Pontcanna area too. They will still need to seek approval for their choice of window, but we hope that our work on this property should make future applications much more straightforward.”

Bison’s Genesis vertical slider was developed to provide a solution for people living in Grade II listed or conservation area properties with a low maintenance, thermally efficient alternative to the timber sliding sash. This latest example of an installation demonstrates that it’s meeting the objective!

Ian Miller, Head of Sales for The Independent Ratings Company tells us that results are speaking volumes for customers using their packages.“It has been a really enjoyable month, and one of the highlights for me was delivering a report to GQA following on from a survey we carried out for them recently; the results speak volumes and prove once again there is no substitute for asking your customers for their opinions. It has been a really positive experience for them and has given them a clear agenda for the future”.

“The same is true for those companies using our feedback and ratings packages when selling to retail; there is simply no denying it, customer feedback posted live on their websites is bringing them new business which they would not have got previously”.

“We have a range of packages, so if you would like more information, call me on 07462 558439 or email me [email protected].

GQA survey sets benchmark for on-going customer service levels and future industry training and qualifications requirements….Mick Clayton, CEO of GQA, the fenestration industry’s qualifications writing body tells us how their recent customer survey has acted as a real boost….

“I guess we are like everybody else, fully immersed in what we do, thinking that we are giving our customers the products and service levels to match”.

“Well now we know for sure the things we are doing right, where we can improve, and where we can develop. The results of the recent 50 point survey we carried out with The Independent Ratings Company have given us all a real boost. The response from our customers was first class, showing they are truly engaged with us; it has given us a clear mandate as to what we are doing right, what they feel we can do better, and some great suggestions of how we can widen our product offering in the future”.

“What was especially encouraging was the respect that the industry has for GQA External Quality Assessors; their approval rating across over a dozen criteria was in excess of 95%. As the authors of Glass sector qualifications, often offered by other organisations, it was especially rewarding for us to see that GQA people

are doing such a great job supporting and raising the quality of provision in the industry through our partners”.

“We will be making the results of our survey available for all our customers to see in the very near future; it is interesting to get their take on how the industry views qualifications, MTC’s, and training in general, and it is re-assuring for us to see the level of genuine engagement we have with them”.

“Qualifications and training for operatives within our industry have always been important; they will become even more so in the future. Spurred on by the results of our survey GQA will continue to be at the forefront of driving an understanding of their importance, and in making new qualifications available for those who want to develop their careers further through learning and training”.

GQA Qualifications writes the qualifications for the industry and supports their delivery through its 75 approved centre partners across the whole of the UK.

CENSolutions is widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries and as it continues to extend its scope of services, it is keen to ensure its team of dedicated independent consultants understand first-hand the testing its customers’ products are subjected to. That is why the entire CENSolutions team recently visited Wintech Engineering Limited in Telford for one of its open days.

Mike Gaillard, Joint Managing Director of CENSolutions says: “Although CENSolutions is more of a facilitator for companies achieving certification, we are often asked for advice on which

tests are needed for a particular product combination or range. We have an excellent range of expertise across the team which allows us to do just that, but what better way to understand testing in its entirety, than to see it done first-hand by a UKAS accredited, quality test house.

“The team at Wintech showed us PAS 24 Security Testing, BS 6375-1 Weather Testing, EN 1191 Cyclic Testing, EN 12600 Glass Impact Testing and EN 1288-3 4-Point Bend Glass Testing. It was fascinating to see the tests being conducted and what some of the well made products in our industry will actually stand up to! And the day achieved - exactly as we hoped it would - an even better understanding across our consultants and customer service advisors of what happens to a window, door or piece of glass in each of the tests we put our customers forward for.”

Technical Director of Wintech Engineering, Michael Wass adds: “We are always pleased to open our doors to anyone who wants to see the tests we carry out on windows, doors and glass and how we run them. We take a quality approach to everything we do, for example we have designed a lot of the testing equipment ourselves to ensure the equipment stands up to the rigorous tests we perform on behalf of our customers. Visitors are often surprised at how much a door will withstand when being tested for security or how much a piece of glass will bend before it breaks – all tests that we perform in our UKAS accredited laboratory, and all tests that quality companies like CENSolutions need to be talking to their customers about in the marketplace.”

The HSE has launched a new safety campaign as an average of 20 tradespeople die every week from asbestos related diseases. The grim figure of 1.3 million at risk illustrates how prevalent a danger the material is, often taking years to develop in a person. The campaign is targeted at tradespeople as they will be in danger of disturbing the material in the course of their normal work of removing and installing. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that tradespeople spend on average 1.53 days a week in buildings built before 2000, which have a high risk of containing asbestos; the equivalent of 70 days a year.

Asbestos can be found in walls and ceilings, or the structure of a building, as well as a host of other places, e.g. guttering, soffits floor tiles, boilers

andtoilet cisterns. It can be disturbed by basic maintenance work like drilling holes and sanding and once disturbed, the microscopic fibres can prove lethal if breathed in, causing lung disease and cancer.

As well as illustrating how often tradespeople can be exposed to asbestos, the survey commissioned by the HSE revealed some common myths believed by those at risk.

One in seven (14%) believed that drinking a glass of water would help protect them from the deadly dust and one in four (27%) thought that opening a window would help to keep them safe.

Only a third (30%) of those asked, were able to identify all the correct measures for safe asbestos working, while more than half (57%) made at least one potentially lethal mistake in trying to identify how to stay safe.

The research, undertaken by Censuswide in September 2014, shows that while more than half (53%) knew that asbestos could be in old buildings built before 1970, only 15% were aware that it could still be found in buildings built up to the year 2000.

Another worrying factor was that although many of those surveyed could pinpoint some asbestos-containing materials, others were ‘clueless’, with only 19% recognising it could also be hidden in common fixtures such as toilet seats and cisterns.

Mark Harper, Minister responsible for Health and Safety, launched the latest HSE campaign at the TradePoint store in Cricklewood. The company is supporting the campaign by distributing asbestos safety kits to tradespeople through their stores across the UK.

“The number dying every year from asbestos related-diseases is unacceptably high,” said Mr Harper. “Despite being banned in the construction industry, asbestos exposure remains a very serious risk to tradespeople. This safety campaign is about highlighting the risks and easy measures people can take to protect themselves.”

A key feature of the campaign is the creation of a new web app for phones, tablets and laptops that helps tradespeople easily identify where they could come into contact with the deadly material as they go about their day-to-day work and gives them tailored help on how to deal with the risks.

To download the web app, visit: www.beware-asbestos.info/news.

FMB welcomes housing review from the Labour Party as making a realistic prospect for sustainable building targetsThe Federation Master Builders (FMB) has come out in favour of the Labour Party’s Lyons Housing Review.

It believes it provides a ‘long overdue blueprint’ for increasing the capacity and output of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) house builders to help build what the Federation claims is the much needed 200,000 new homes a year.

The FMB states that the review is the most comprehensive review of housing delivery seen in recent years.

“Given the extent of the housing shortage we face, the target of 200,000 new homes per year is ambitious, but it is a necessary ambition,” argued Brian Berry, Chief Executive, FMB.

“To achieve this aim we will need to significantly boost the capacity of the house building industry and Sir Michael Lyons has rightly identified the SME house building sector as a crucial part of the housing sector’s capacity.”

“It is very pleasing to see that Lyons has recognised the barriers that small house builders face, which prevent them from building the homes we need, such as access to finance and a shortage of small sites, and has put forward a package of measures to address them.”

Berry also noted that as well as endorsing the Help to Build loan guarantee initiative, which Labour was already in the process of developing, the report has made the ‘groundbreaking’ recommendation of a return to a simpler, ‘redline’ system for outline planning applications for smaller sites.

“The focus across the whole of the report of pushing more land into the system is also extremely welcome and Lyons rightly highlights the need for a focus within this on the identification of smaller sites and packaging opportunities for SMEs as part of larger developments,” concluded Berry.

The £100 million funding of the Green Deal may come too late for many companies that have invested in providing installation measuresEnergy Secretary, Ed Davey’s statement to the Liberal Confernece in Glasgow last week, stated that £100 million would be provided for the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF).

This is on top of the £120 million that was promised in June this year but led to such a take up that the scheme was closed suddenly in July. It led to shock and massive criticism from many trade associations and other bodies and those who had invested substantial amounts in training and resources to prepare for installing energy efficient products like boilers and solar heating.

Insulation companies that were expected to win a great deal of business from the Green Deal have reported themselves in difficulty with many going bust or announcing redundancies.

Big companies that have listings on the FTSE and operate facilities management services in the energy efficiency sector, are among the casualties. Carillion, after it lost £43 million cut 1,000 jobs from its energy services division, due in part to far lower than expected demand for energy efficiency upgrades.

This new funding for the Green Deal begins in November but there are many who feel it comes too late and is not going to be sufficient to maintain the it as a viable, long term scheme.

“As temperatures start to drop and households turn up their heating, this additional funding is a timely, but ultimately temporary, solution to encouraging energy efficiency,” stated John Alker, UK Green Building Council. “This funding could see us through to the General Election, but what happens after that? All parties must recognise that home energy efficiency is an infrastructure priority, with public investment needed to support the most vulnerable and to create the confidence for the private sector to scale up investment over the long term.”

Sir Michael Lyons and his housing review have got the thumbs up from the FMB.

Will he be smiling for much longer? Energy Secretary, Ed Davey, announced a further £100 million for the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund but this may not be enough for installer businesses that invested in the scheme.

FENSA reports a ‘stubborn minority’ of its registered businesses have not embraced mandatory Insurance Backed Guarantees (IBGs).The system set up by FENSA and its Approved Insurance Providers allows automatic notification of installations from FENSA to the insurance company, automatic issuing of the IBG policies direct from the insurance company to the homeowner and billing direct from the insurance company to the installer.

According to FENSA, this system is working well. However, there is a ‘stubborn minority’ of installers that have yet to provide FENSA with details of their chosen IBG provider and therefore currently cannot self-certify.

FENSA warns that the consequences for these installers are ‘stark’. If an installer does not issue (or pay for) an IBG policy for each job notified, that company will be expelled from FENSA. Such installers will also not be able to register with another glazing Competent Persons Scheme, as they are in breach of FENSA rules.

“There is no hiding place for installers ducking out of IBGs,” stated Chris Mayne, Managing Director, FENSA. “Because the system is computerised, we can immediately see which installers do not have an IBG supplier in place. They will be expelled from FENSA.”

FENSA rules state: ‘To provide each customer (other than a local authority or housing association) with an Insurance Backed Guarantee policy (conforming to requirements laid down from time to time by FENSA) to provide cover to the customer should the Registered Business, for whatever reason, cease to trade.’

“We have a duty to those FENSA registered businesses that are playing by the rules,” said Chris Mayne. “We cannot allow those installers that break or ignore the scheme rules to carry on as usual. We will initiate the process to expel these installers.”

Avocet Hardware has praised Glazerite Windows for its decision to fit its ABS snap secure lock as standard on all of its Secured by Design (SBD) accredited doors. Raymond Pearce, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales, said: “Lock-snapping has become a huge issue in recent years and one of the main reasons for its rise in prevalence is the number of double glazed and uPVC doors being sold with locks that simply aren’t secure.”

“Glazerite’s decision to tackle this problem through the incorporation, as standard, of the UK’s safest lock has to be applauded and I hope others will quickly follow suit.”

Avocet’s ABS lock is the only retrofit product in the country to be both TS007 3-star rated and hold Sold Secure’s SS312 Diamond accreditation – the latter being awarded only after the most strenuous and up-to-date testing procedure in the UK. A process that the lock has to undergo every 12-months in order to retain the accreditation.

Jason Thompson, a Glazerite director, added: “It doesn’t matter how many hooks and bolts your door has, the Euro cylinder is the weakest link. Burglars are aware of this weakness and lock-snapping break-ins are rising as a result.

“The ABS cylinders not only offer a higher level of security than our previous cylinders, they also qualify for the SBD

and Maco Secure PLUS accreditations without the need for a separate cylinder guard or security door handle.”

The ABS locks feature anti bump, snap, pick and drill technology, and incorporate a unique patented snap secure locking technology, which allows sacrificial sections to break off during an attack, leaving the door fully secure, but openable by key afterwards.

“We know from trade and consumer feedback that security is getting higher on householders and businesses’ list of priorities in choosing windows and doors so we want to be sure our trade customers are fully armed to meet and exceed that demand by offering the very best available,” added Jason.

Avocet Hardware has announced a deal with Door-Stop International that will see the UK’s favourite composite door manufacturer stock its full range of Affinity hardware. The range, which will be available on 3-day composite doors ordered via www.door-stop.co.uk, incorporates hinges, locks, door bolts, handles, letterplates, knockers and numbers, and comes in three colours, chrome, gold and matt black.

Key products include Avocet’s ABS snap-secure lock and the Affinity 3D adjustable butt-hinge. The ABS lock is the only retrofit product on the market to have both TS007 3-star rating and Sold Secure’s SS312 Diamond accreditation, while the 3D hinge is so simple to use it can be adjusted using just an Allen key. In addition, both

products, along with the Affinity door bolt, have Secured by Design accreditation.

Martin Dickie, Door-Stop’s business unit manager, said: “The Affinity range from Avocet is a quality suite of hardware, with proven popularity that offers a very high level of security. And with installers able to choose a fully matching suite in gold, chrome or black, they can order knowing it will look good and give homeowners peace of mind.”

Christopher Burrows, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales (window & door hardware division) added: “We are striving to establish Avocet as the market leader across every aspect of the business and to achieve this we need our excellent product and service to be matched by exceptional distribution – and Door-Stop provide an unparalleled route to market for our door hardware products.”

When looking for the perfect door handle to use on your doors, there are currently many options available in the market. However there are very few door handles available that match the quality, security and price of the newly released UAP high security 2* Kitemarked door handles, which are available in both short backplate and long backplate versions.

David Jennings, MD of UAP, says “When we were in the design process for the high security handles, we were very aware that we wanted to offer the fabricators a door handle that was high quality and ergonomically designed, whilst at the same time eliminating the need to fit a cylinder guard to achieve 3* security. We also wanted an easy to fit handle which can be used by the professional installer offering a security upgrade service.”

The UAP high security 2* Kitemarked door handles have been packed with state of the art features, which are not found on other door handles. When looking at the handles, the first thing you will notice is the blind cylinder end, which covers up the cylinder chamber and only leaves the key hole visible. This has been designed to act as an integrated cylinder guard to protect the cylinder from drilling attacks. The blind end also ensures that there is no way the cylinder can protrude on the outside of the door, and leave the cylinder vulnerable to lock snapping - a very common burglary method.

Combining the UAP 2* security door handle with the UAP 1* cylinders will give you a professionally looking 3* security solution for PAS24 doors. UAP have also developed a specially sized 30/35 (65mm) cylinder which is the perfect size cylinder to use on 44mm door blanks with the UAP high security door handles!

A second and very unique feature on the UAP door handles is the self-adhesive tabs which are used on the back of both the internal and external handles. The tabs are made from highly industrial closed cell foam tape, and are extremely strong once they have set on the door. The self-adhesive tabs are designed to not only assist with easy fitting, but they are also an important security feature which helps to further strengthen the door handle against possible attacks. The tabs also give water penetration resistance between the door and the handle, greatly preventing corrosion, discolouration and premature aging.

David continues, “We have also concentrated heavily on the materials used to make the door handles. Our Gold Anodised, Silver Anodised, Black and White finishes are made from aero-space grade Aluminium, making these handles truly out of this World! With these finishes, we offer a 5 year inland coating guarantee, and also a 10 year colour fast guarantee, meaning that the finishes will not start to fade.”

“We also know the current trend is towards High Gloss Gold and Chrome finishes and we wanted to provide the fabricator with a fit and forget option, meaning that the handle can be fitted and then forgotten about without the worry of the handle pitting or rusting in the future which is the downfall of many handles. With this in mind, we developed the Nanocoast® high security handles, available in PVD Gold, Mirror Polished and Satin Stainless Steel finishes. These handles are made out of 304 grade Stainless Steel, and have been salt spray test to ASTM B117 for 2,000+ hours! These handles are ideal for the

coast, where there are high levels of salt in the air which very quickly rust and begin to pit inferior metals such as Zinc and Brass based products. 304 grade Stainless Steel has good nickel content, and due to this it has excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance in a wide variety of environments. With the in mind, these Nanocoast® door handles come with an Industry First LIFETIME Coating Guarantee ANYWHERE in the Country!”

The door handles can be converted to be sprung or unsprung. The spring inside the handle can easily be removed to make the handle unsprung. Each door handle can also be colour matched and suited to other products in the UAP range, so you can offer your customers a fully suited door hardware solution. This includes door knockers, door viewers, letterplates including the brand new iPlate®, letterplate shrouds, numerals and letters, and identity card slots in seven different finishes!

David concludes, “We believe the UAP high security 2* Kitemarked door handles are one of the highest quality and most secure door handles available. The price points on these door handles are extremely competitive, even against standard door handles made from inferior materials! We are fully stocked across the whole range in both short backplate and long backplate versions, and are ready to ship straight away!”

GLASS & GLAZING

The leaves are falling, the temperatures are dropping, and the nights are drawing in (as well as stretching out into the morning, but nobody ever mentions that). Yes – love it or hate it, winter’s on its way, and strolling hand-in-hand with it is the annual rise in break-ins. MyTrade TV talks to Raymond Pearce, Avocet Hardware’s head of UK sales (ABS snap-secure locks), about why you even more care should be taken with home security during the winter months.

“Quite frankly the most depressing part about winter isn’t the getting up in the dark; the getting home in the dark; or even the wrong kind of leaves on the tracks,” said Raymond. “It’s the fact that every single year the police report a rise in the number of break-ins – with criminals rubbing their hands in glee and making the most of the long dark nights and the kind of lax home security that really should have been stamped out by now.”

“Every year at this time, newspapers and magazines are full of articles on home security and the steps that need to be taken in order to protect your home for

winter. Yet every year breaks-ins rise and even more people become just another crime statistic.

“And the reason? It’s the good old “it won’t happen to me” attitude that so many of us hold dear, until, of course, it does happen. But why wait? Why suffer that heart-breaking moment when you walk into your house – or even down your stairs in the morning – to find you’ve been broken into? Or experience that sinking feeling when you realise what’s been taken and what can never be replaced.

“We all have home insurance policies, which amongst other things, cover the cost of replacing items that could well be damaged or stolen during a burglary. But why do so many people stop there? Why don’t they take the steps needed to significantly reduce the odds of their homes being entered and these items being stolen in the first place?

“It’s not like it costs the earth – at least if you do things sensibly as opposed to employing snipers in gun towers to take out anyone or anything entering your garden. First and foremost, locks on doors and windows should be upgraded to protect against forced entry – and we have the idea solution in the form of our ABS snap-secure lock, which is the

safest solutions currently available on the market.

“There are a lot of different snap-secure locks available, but ABS is the only one that passes all the tests needed to have both a 3-star rating according to BSI’s TS007 standard, and Sold Secure’s SS312 Diamond accreditation.

“As well as locks, external security lighting should be installed and operational, and an alarm system installed. While common sense practices like not leaving keys lying around or even in doors, shutting all windows when you leave the house and leaving lights on when you go out you, should become regular practices.

“And, of course, make sure you don’t forget about garages or sheds either. Quite often the contents of these buildings are worth a considerable sum and quite often their security is neglected. Make sure the shed is always secured with a good quality padlock and the garage is locked.

“These steps might not stop the most determined of burglars, but the thing that needs to be remembered is that most burglaries are opportunistic crimes. And by removing the easy and obvious ways into your home then you really are taking great strides in stopping yourself and your family becoming victims.

“So this winter, make sure you only have to moan about the dark, the cold and the trains being delayed because the wind is blowing in the wrong direction, and not about the fact you’ve been broken into. Heed the winter warnings, protect your home and hopefully come spring the annual rise in break-ins could well be old news.”

The success of Synseal’s Orangery Collection keeps on growing, with installations taking place throughout the UK.One of the latest examples of this success is the installation of an Integra parapet wall style orangery in Lancashire. The choice of the Integra orangery design was driven by a desire from the homeowner to have an installation that would most closely achieve the look and feel of a fully brick-built extension, while still benefiting from the extra light that comes from having an overhead glass roof.

The Integra is unique in today’s marketplace in that the concealed lantern roof is designed to fit neatly behind the parapet wall for a very traditional orangery look, with no decorative external soffit or guttering system showing.

Networks UPVC was identified by the homeowner via K2’s online directory. They carried out the full installation, with the Integra orangery components being supplied by local K2 fabricator partner Premier Conservatories Supplies, based in Bolton.

Peter Marsden, owner of Networks UPVC Ltd, commented: “Our customer was extremely pleased with the finished product. The inside is airy and light, and has completely transformed this area of the house. We found the Integra kit very easy to install, saving us several days of installation in comparison to other solutions. In addition, our K2 fabricator, Premier Conservatory Supplies, was on hand to guide us through the installation of the orangery, which was done in less than 4 hours, thanks to everything being supplied cut to size and ready to use. There is no doubt that

to see the frame in situ is very impressive; it really shows the strength and durability of the structural orangery system.”

Premier Conservatories Supplies Sales Director, Andrew Buglass added: “Historically we have mainly supplied Rio flat-roofed orangeries, so this new experience of supplying an Integra was extremely beneficial to our business. The Orangery Collection has been engineered specifically to use the same core structural design, with slight variations allowing for significant changes in the aesthetic look of each of the styles. I personally attended the build on site and it was good to see this new Integra quickly taking shape. The completed job features an impressive internal soffit and certainly looks the business, inside and out.”

The technical versatility of the Orangery Collection, combined with its multi-purpose engineering, means that retailing installers do not need to promote just one of the styles but can market the whole of the range with confidence. The structural nature of the system also means that wide span orangery project designs can be created, without the need for additional and costly portal frame support.

Installers can allow their homeowner customer prospects to choose from Synseal’s selection of Orangery Collection styles, safe in the knowledge that the installation team will be able to handle the job on site to perfection thanks to the common design features deployed right across the range.

The entire Ambience team takes great pride in supporting customers on all levels, from order processing through to production and final delivery. Every aspect is carefully monitored by the

recently modified Quality Control Department.

The company as a whole has seen steady growth that has led to additional staffing by up to 15% for 2014, which helps Tuffx maintain a high level of performance.

As conservatory design has continued to progress with radical improvements to performance and aesthetics being introduced, it has generated substantial growth for Tuffx in 2014. Furthermore the

company has introduced Apprenticeship Schemes to develop a greater skill base going forward.

Nationally, Ambience customers have acknowledged the immense variety of colour options, varying high performance glass options, including the NEW Ambi sunshade blue which offers the highest Solar control properties whilst maintaining it’s true self-clean coating.

Livingston based Veka fabricator Stevenswood Ltd have recently taken delivery of a Stuga ZX4 sawing & machining center. This is the third Stuga Stevenswood have purchased in the last ten years and it is the reliability, performance and back-up that has led them from the first Flowline in 2005 to a ZX3 in 2010 and now a top of the range ZX4 with an output in excess of 800 windows per week.Stevenswood are convinced that the design and layout of the Stuga ZX machines is perfect for their needs and the back-up they get is paramount. The Stuga machines utilize rotary tooling creating exceptional three hundred and sixty flexibility for optimal programming of operations prep by prep and profile by profile. The ‘U’ shape footprint configuration also allows one operator to run the machine most of the time, something that can’t efficiently be done on machines with a straight line footprint of 20m or more where two operators are always needed to get maximum output.

StEVENSWOOD tAkE DELIVEry Of StuGA Zx4

In addition notching on both sides of a profile and self centralised arrow-heading are extremely useful benefits that not all machines can offer.

The new ZX4 was delivered to the recently acquired 55,000 square foot factory where the other two Stugas have been moved. This brings all of Stevenswood’s business that was spread over 6 separate units with a total space of 28,000 square foot under one roof. The total investment in the move has already cost £1.7m. As a result of the increase in production created by the ZX4 purchase along with more welding and cleaning kit Stevenswood have been able to increase production to 900 plus windows per week so far and plan to ramp this up to 1,500 per week in the near future.

As well as the historic track record of the machines Stevenswood enjoy the way Stuga service works as a sawing &

machining center is only ever as good as the back-up behind it. The huge amount of work and operations these machines carry out there is always the chance of operator error, accidental damage and shear wear and tear but this isn’t a major problem if the fabricator can make a quick call to either get a fix or book an engineer. There also needs to be enough engineering resource to know that it isn’t going to take more than a day to get a technician in when needed. Stuga can provide this level of service in Scotland just the same as in any other part of the country and do it consistently.

Field service is only as good as what is behind it and this is where Stuga scores again with a fully staffed Norfolk based Service Center that can analyse faults through phone and internet and either fix at a distance or dispatch a field engineer and coordinate any required spare parts immediately. It is a total commitment to have a technician always available at the end of a phone but that is what Stuga’s top customers like Stevenswood demand and expect.

Stuga’s mission is to give their customers throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland a first class support experience so that they will come back for more in the future just like Stevenswood and many others.

Trade fabricator Goldstar Trade Frames has recently invested in two pieces of automation machinery that has enabled it to become one of the most efficient manufacturers in the business. The company now manufactures in excess of 250 frames a week with fewer than five people.

Goldstar has invested in a new SMR-4 welder and an SVK2 corner cleaner from Haffner Murat. Mark Simms of Goldstar said, “We invested in a Haffner SBA 2 machining centre at the start of the recession. We were impressed with the quality of the machinery and, just as importantly, the quality of the advice we received. The investment we made helped us ride out the peaks and troughs of the recession with minimum staff. So when the time came to make a

new investment, we had no hesitation in turning to Haffner.”

In the SMR-4 welder and the SVK2 corner cleaner, Goldstar has made two extremely sound investments. Quite simply, the SMR-4 is the fastest and most accurate welder on the market today. Alongside a wealth of other benefits, the machine’s key selling point is the automatic self centering of transom and mullions, which ensures 90 degree transom welding even with uneven arrow heads. What this means in practice is that welding can be undertaken without the need for a skilled operator. The SVK-2 CNC corner and transom cleaning machine offers superb flexibility. Suitable for bevel and radius profiles, it’s a two axis machine that’s fully programmable for both white and woodgrain profiles. It has automatic profile recognition and comes with a rotary tool post for radius and internal cleaning with groove and woodgrain knives as standard. Both machines come with a two year part and labour warranty for complete peace of mind.

As well as increasing capacity without increasing overhead, the two machines will also help Goldstar to increase the accuracy of their output. Mark said, “The machines have only just gone in, but we’re delighted with what they’ve added so far. Haffner’s expertise has once again been invaluable and we know from previous experience that their level of after-sales service is exceptional.”

Founded in 1991, Goldstar manufactures PVC-u windows and doors, bi-fold doors, French doors, conservatories and composite doors. The company has a reputation for providing quality and service – a reputation that looks set to be enhanced as a result of this latest investment!

Innovative systems house Liniar is announced today as sponsor of the National Fenestration Awards Cool Wall – the place where installers, fabricators and systems companies nationwide can show off their work by uploading images online.Run as part of the National Fenestration Awards, Cool Wall votes are cast online by people actively working within and engaged with the industry, resulting in one winner being declared each month – with an overall winner announced at the end of the year.

Last year’s overall joint-winner, Liniar fabricator Glazedale, won with an image showing a cream window and conservatory installation. Darren Shelbourn, Glazedale’s owner and MD, was thrilled to win the inaugural award, commenting: “It’s great to

have our work recognised by the industry, and what makes this award even more important is that it was voted for by our peers – so it really means a lot to us.”

Liniar will be the sole Cool Wall sponsor for the next two years and hopes to encourage its fabricators and installers to enter their own images in the contest to demonstrate the high quality of the work they carry out each day. Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains:

“The Cool Wall is a great way to showcase some of the gorgeous work we know installers are proud of – and as it’s online, it’s easy to vote for a winner. The sponsorship agreement will see Liniar increase its online presence and we look forward to working more closely with the NFA to maximise the potential of this opportunity.”

Jason Grafton-Holt from the National Fenestration Awards said: “We’re delighted to have Liniar on board – the guys there have a similar outlook to ourselves, both in terms of promoting high quality products and making the most of online channels, so it’s a good fit with the NFAs. We’re looking forward to making the most of the partnership and seeing even more entrants to the Cool Wall each month.”

We’re right in the meaty part of voting in this year’s National Fenestration Awards and the competition in all categories is heating up nicely! The NFAs have passed two important milestones in the past few weeks. Firstly, the number of registered users has roared past the magic 1000 barrier. This isn’t just a number, but a clear and impressive representation of the number and diversity of the people taking part in these unique awards. Within that 1000+ people are representatives from the timber, PVC, steel, aluminium, conservatory roof, fabrication, sysco, glass and many other sectors. This level of engagement is what has made these awards truly representative.

The second milestone of note is the number of votes cast. The number is already way past the level of votes in 2013, and with weeks still left to go, the final number could be enormous!

At the time of writing, there will be just over 5 weeks left for people to cast their votes. For those who are not yet registered, taking part is incredibly simple. Go to www.fenestrationawards.co.uk to register and be part of something revolutionary!

Popular industry extruders Liniar have been announced as official Cool Wall sponsors in the last few weeks.

They are to work with the National Fenestration Awards on what has become one of it’s most well known features right up until the end of 2016, securing what is set to become a successful and fruitful partnership both for Liniar and the NFAs.

Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains: “The Cool Wall is a great way to showcase some of the gorgeous work we know installers are proud of – and as it’s online, it’s easy to vote for a winner. The sponsorship agreement will see Liniar increase its online presence and we look forward to working more closely with the NFA to maximise the potential of this opportunity.”

With Liniar on board, and some very high quality installations on display, the Cool Wall looks set to get even bigger over the coming years.

Continuing a busy period for the NFAs, long term award supporter GQA Qualifications have been announced as the second main event sponsor.

GQA Qualifications have been the longest supporter of the National Fenestration Awards, and it is that support which has helped the awards get off the ground and become an established and exciting industry scheme.

Speaking about the awards and becoming a Main Event sponsor, Mick Clayton, CEO of GQA, said: “I have seen the awards grow from the initial idea and launch into what is now a prominent industry recognition initiative and I’m delighted to be able to continue our support of Jason and his team at the NFAs. The Awards event planned is something different to the norm, highlighting the creativity and different thinking within the team, and giving a fitting conclusion to the nomination and voting process”

With only 6 Main Event sponsor slots, and two already taken, the remaining four prestigious places are sure to be filled very quickly. To find out more about this, contact the team at [email protected].

Industry data specialists and NFA partners Windowbase have helped the awards gain new awareness to other parts of the UK fenestration sector, namely the steel sector.

By working with Windowbase the NFAs have been able to promote themselves to a much wider selection of the UK fenestration industry. It has allowed people who had not previously known about the awards to become familiar with the name, what the awards are and what they stand for. In fact it this partnership which lead to one of the companies in the steel category make it through to the final voting phase.

After speaking with Clement Windows, an installation business in the steel sector of our industry, it turns out that they found out about the awards after being sent one of the NFAs regular email updates to the industry. From there they went to the main NFA site and decided that this was something they would like to be part of. They said that if they had not got the email, they would not have known about the awards and would not have been part of them at this stage.

There is still plenty of time to take part and help make your mark in this year’s National Fenestration Awards.

Go to www.fenestrationawards.co.uk to find out more and help reward some very deserving UK fenestration people and businesses!

Synseal is proud to introduce WarmCore, an innovative aluminium folding sliding door system which incorporates a radically different product design approach to create a new high performance fenestration framing solution: “warm aluminium”.Totally designed from scratch starting with a clean sheet of paper, every single component has been concept sketched, detail designed, prototyped, tooled, trial installed and rigorously tested by Synseal’s market-leading R&D team. WarmCore is a high quality aluminium bi-fold door solution with peerless thermal performance to ensure end-user comfort, all year round.

Precision-manufactured with a high quality surface finish and affording slim, elegant door frame sightlines once installed, aluminium has undoubtedly become the material of choice for premium folding sliding door applications today. But now there’s an even better solution – WarmCore’s innovative “warm aluminium” frame construction is key to offering unrivalled thermal performance with U-values as low as 1.4 W/m2K using standard 28mm double glass or 1.0 W/m2K using 44m triple glass.

At the heart of WarmCore products is a core of PVC-U which significantly out-performs the polyamide

thermal breaks commonly used to reduce the threat of cold bridging on aluminium windows and doors. The result is an innovative “warm aluminium” frame construction, carefully dimensioned to provide an optimised 70mm front-to-back overall sash frame depth for UK applications while ensuring market-leading thermal performance thanks to the multi-chambered insulating core.

When viewed from the outside, WarmCore doors ensure a classical appearance with a choice of 4 high quality aluminium external cladding styles: Square design (as used with architectural aluminium fenestration), Pencil Round design (curved elegance), Decorative design (sculptured ovolo as used with timber windows and doors) and Chamfered design (evoking traditional putty-glazed windows and doors).

Each of these 4 cladding options presents a premium quality and hi-tech aesthetic

appeal, suitable for both residential and commercial building applications.

4 aluminium cladding colours – White, Cream, Black RAL 9005 and Grey RAL 7016 - provide 16 possible colour configurations, including dual-colour combinations.

WarmCore doors can be 28mm double glazed with a choice of Square or Chamfered aluminium beads for a neat internal finish, or 44mm triple glazed using a special TG aluminium bead.

Folding sliding door leaves are triple-sealed with contact weatherstrip gaskets to eradicate draughts and ensure best-in-class weathertightness for all-year-round user comfort.

Gasket corner mouldings for sash-to-frame and sash-to-sash applications use a push-fit design to neatly and positively couple with straight-cut gasket lengths for easy application, whilst avoiding any need to overrun gasket to fill gaps between

sashes – there is no need to cut angles or glue gaskets together to form a corner.

PAS24 and Secure By Design (SBD) qualifications provide peace of mind for end users, as WarmCore doors have been independently third party tested by UKAS to prove impressive structural strength and security credentials.

Double-strength sash corners are mechanically jointed and use a combination of internal aluminium cleats and a wrap-around corner moulding block to ensure secure rigidity and robustness in use.

Custom-engineered extruded aluminium flag hinges are designed with security in mind and added reassurance for both installers and homeowners is available from Synseal’s custom-designed hardware development partners ERA, who underwrite and provide a “Five-Star” security guarantee against forced entry for a period of 10 years.

Solidor has recently expanded it’s slab only offering for fabricators and door manufacturers, with the offering of a complete range of door designs, 17 through colours inside and out, ODL TriSYS cassettes, glazing, hardware and accessories all delivered nationwide in 3-5 days. The company already satisfies the demands of a number of high profile fabricators and believes their latest expanded offering will further entice manufacturers to make the change to a composite door slab that’s produced in the UK with a solid, hardwood core. An important feature is that all the doors are finished off with an exterior window grade foil finish that’s a perfect match for nearly all standard PVCu door profiles.

The Solidor slab is 10% thicker than the standard imported ones from the Far East and is perfectly suited to a standard door outer frame from the likes of Kömmerling, Deceuninck, Rehau, Spectus, Swish, Synseal and VEKA among many other leading systems in the UK. For fabricators it’s a huge benefit to be able to use a standard door outer frame and so there’s

no issue of additional stockholding for a dedicated composite door frame in white, plus all of the colour options and with a different reinforcement section.

The door slabs have been recently re-engineered to offer better levels of energy efficiency with some slabs achieving a U-value of just 1.3 W/m2K, while the 62mm door slab can achieve the Passivhaus standard of 0.8 W/m2K. We have worked with the internationally renowned, IFT Rosenheim GmbH in Germany and by Build Check Ltd in the UK on this project to enhance our offering.

In the Solidor production facility the latest CNC equipment allows for the routing for any combination of lock, handle and hinge, while all the door slabs are edgebanded for extended performance as standard and have been fully tested in the UK and Germany for security and thermal performance. Solidor carries ISO 9001:2008, while the products are covered by BSI Kitemark for enhanced security, PAS 23-24 and Secured by Design accreditation, along with CE Marking and a comprehensive 10 year warranty.

Customers also have access to an award-winning consumer marketing campaign that includes brochures, colour swatches, videos, Apple and Android apps and the latest Door Designer software that can be incorporated within any customers website. There are even videos on YouTube highlighting the better security that a solid timber core composite door offers.

Gareth Mobley, managing director of Solidor Group comments: ‘Our slab only offering is a complete one-stop shop for all composite door manufacturers. We believe our numerous product features, UK manufacturing flexibility and support is a better option, as the market continues to demand a better composite door.’

For information on Solidor then log on to www.solidor.co.uk, e-mail [email protected] or call their sales office on 01782 847300. You can also add to their Twitter following @solidorltd.

Sill options include a WarmCore standard threshold with integral sill or 150mm thermally-broken aluminium sill and a Part M compliant low threshold design in thermally-broken aluminium with optional ramps and cover trims that can be used internally, externally or both, depending on requirements.

The key installation benefit of WarmCore bi-fold doors is delivered by the clever aluminium track design, which enables a quick all-in-one fitting procedure without the need for de-sashing. Alternatively, folding sliding door installation with 100% concealed fixings can be achieved by installing the outer frame prior to fitting the track.

Plain hinges, pivot roller hinges and espag hinges provide +/- 1mm adjustment to cater for fine tolerances on site, while single roller and double “pivot” rollers provide +/- 3mm vertical adjustment for precision installation.

The WarmCore range includes all popular Bi-fold door elevational configurations and stacking options, in addition to traditional hinged sash French and Residential doors. Folding sliding doors up to 6 metres wide incorporating 7 sashes can be specified.

“At Synseal our aim is to design new improved products to arm our existing and prospect customers with value-adding sales opportunities” says Steve Brown, Synseal’s Head of Customer Care & Product Strategy. “WarmCore is a real winner – a bold concept with many technical advantages, delivering true innovation and signalling exciting times ahead.”

Synseal Chief Executive David Leng comments: “WarmCore’s dual-material approach opens up a new chapter in our company’s history. From November ’14 WarmCore folding sliding door units will be available for our fabricator partners to purchase, fully-manufactured and CE Marked by Synseal. We will also be establishing a network of approved fabricators across all UK regions from January ’15 onwards and interested parties should contact me directly to discuss this opportunity.”

The VEKA UK Group was pleased to invite representatives of the British Standards Institution for a tour of the Burnley HQ and demonstration of the new mixing plant in action. The state-of-the-art mixing plant was officially opened in February 2014 by Business Secretary, Vince Cable, following an investment of over £5m.

Andrew Butterfield, BSI’s Global Head of Construction, and Lorraine Balch, the Institution’s VEKA Scheme Manager, joined Mark Barsby and Steve Bakewell, The VEKA UK Group’s Heads of Technical and Product Management respectively, at the Lancashire facility.

Andy commented “It was great to meet the VEKA team, my thanks to all involved in making our visit such an interesting

and enjoyable day. I was particularly impressed with the new compound blending plant which clearly represents a major investment in the site, I was also very impressed with the mechanised HighBay warehousing system. It was a

real pleasure to spend the day with the team who are so committed to working with BSI through Kitemark certification of their products”

Mark added: “It was great to show Andy and Lorraine the progress that we’ve made here in Burnley, post-acquisition, with the completed movement of people and machinery.”

The visit comes after The VEKA UK Group’s Imagine Bi-Fold Door became the first PVC-U Bi-Fold Door to be awarded a British Standard Kitemark earlier in the year.

Mark continued: “We’re looking forward to the next chapter in our relationship with BSI, now that we have streamlined both the VEKA and Halo Kitemarks to the Burnley site production, and the exciting programme of upcoming product releases we have planned.”

Sales have surpassed £1 million for aïr, the high performance lift & slide and bi-fold doors manufactured exclusively by Everglade Windows, in less than nine months since its launch. “These impressive sales figures show the success of aïr,” says Jay Patel, brand ambassador for aïr and sales director at Everglade Windows. “Since the brand launch in November 2013 at the window industry’s prestigious G Awards and the first doors leaving the Everglade Windows factory, interest in aïr has been extraordinary.

“There are already 10 accredited retailers selling aïr throughout the South East of England. And seven aïrzones have been installed. Excitement around the brand keeps building as more retailers are added around the UK.

“These are high performance doors, tested to the extreme. Boundless possibilities with colours, finishes

and options add to aïr’s desirability for consumers. As do its super slim sightlines and refined engineering.

“To reach £1 million within nine months with a new product is a brilliant result.

This shows that our two years planning and developing the brand has really paid off for aïr accredited installers.”

Door-Stop has launched the latest edition of its award winning website www.door-stop.co.uk. After a brief middle-of-the-night downtime, the website is back, better than ever. It’s now even more user friendly and can be accessed from any device – smartphone, tablet, laptop or computer, whether it’s Apple, Android or any other operating system. It’s easier to navigate, quicker to load and use – and it looks great too.

The website is at the heart of Door-Stop’s service, with 98% of orders coming via Door-Stop.co.uk. And 25% of this traffic comes from smartphones – typically from installers at work or coming back into the office to catch up after hours. This figure will certainly increase, so the website update has streamlined the service to make online ordering an even smoother process for smartphone users.

There are other changes too - the customer log-in area (Door Vault) is clearer and easier to use. The account settings are straightforward and clear and previous orders are easier to find. The hardware page has been re-engineered for more flexibility, adding further options so customers have more choice to mix and match when designing their door. It’s all part of Door-Stop’s commitment to helping its customers do business.

Following the launch of its on-line design and ordering system last month IG Doors has extended its offers to installers wanting to buy Truedor. Richard Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for the company’s trade division explains that Truedor has clearly caught the imagination of the installer sector with the new on-line ordering facility supporting the excellent product range and marketing support package.“I said last month that ordering on-line was a must for composite door suppliers in today’s modern market; it is the way the industry operates and was very much on the wish list of all the people we had spoken to since we launched Truedor. The response to our launch has been fantastic, even better than we expected, and it gives our customers the flexibility to operate their businesses at times which suit them; they are not dependent on our sales office to place their orders, they can do that at any time”.

OuTSTanDing PrODucT range anD greaT MarkeTing SuPPOrT..

“We knew that making the on-line ordering system live was going to be a great boost for our customers, and for ourselves; when we set out to launch Truedor we were very clear on a number of things – we would have an outstanding product range, great marketing support, and we would make customer service the kingpin of our offering. Having the on line ordering system is very much a part of the customer service offering”.

“We know from the feedback we have received so far that we have got our product range and our service levels exactly as our

customers want them; the dialogue we have had with them from the start about what they expect from us will continue to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, and will enable us to continue to talk to them about what else they would like from us in the future. This dialogue with our customers is essential for success in the long term; we want to develop a loyal customer base which is with us for years to come, and we fully recognise that loyalty is a two way thing”.

We are SHaring THe BenefiTS Of OrDering On-Line!

“A part of this loyalty will come through sharing the benefits generated by our on-line ordering system. We believe that on-line ordering is a win-win for us and our customers, and we recognise that we should share the benefits of this. The fact is if our customers order on-line and pay on-line then that saves us time and we should share those savings with them rather than keeping them for ourselves. That’s why we are offering all of our customers a £10 discount when they order on-line and a further £10 discount when they pay on-line. It is a part of our customer ethos; it has to be a partnership to succeed in the long term and hopefully offering these discounts shows that we are serious when we say this. It is a tangible sign of us giving something back to our customers where we both benefit.”

“There is also a first order discount of £50 available, and we would urge all installers to take advantage of it. It will give them the opportunity to see just how simple the ordering system is to use, how versatile the product range is, and just how well the customer service and delivery system we have implemented works to support them once their orders have been placed”.

Sealco’s bi-fold door manufacturing pack cuts manufacturing time for joiners. The pack includes a Router Cutter and Hinge Jig to make it faster and more cost-effective to produce high quality timber bi-folding doors. The specially designed router cutter reduces the time it takes to prepare the doorset and the hinge jig ensures accurate assembly first time.

“Timber bi-folds are a great opportunity for joiners but they can be time consuming to manufacture,” says Derek Malcolm, Managing Director of Sealco leading independent

window and door hardware supplier. “That’s why we have worked with customers to develop the Sealco bi-fold door manufacturing pack.”

The Sealco bi-fold door manufacturing pack is free for customers when they order the PC Henderson Securefold Bi-fold System. Designed for top hung bi-folds, the Securefold system comes complete with track, frame and door seals to ensure the best possible weatherproofing. There’s a choice of timber or aluminium thresholds.

“The system is corrosion resistant and built for long life. It has been tested to 100,000

opening cycles. There’s a Securefold Ultra high-security Secured by Design option available too.

Four colour choices, black, brushed satin, polished stainless steel and titanium gold, suit any door finish. All the components are made from stainless or cast stainless steel, anodised aluminium or polymers.

“From our experience having the right gearing and hardware is only part of helping customers sell more bi-folds. As well as cutting production time with our new bi-fold door manufacturing pack we also provide full technical back up where needed.

“This is just one of the ways we support customers. Earlier this year we ran a CE Marking workshop for timber window and door manufacturers with CE Marking experts Build Check. We were surprised that for many it was the first time they’d been given any practical information about how to comply. We had several windows and doors on display, and the bi-fold doors definitely stirred most interest.

“Most joiners make a wide variety of products and the Sealco bi-fold door manufacturing pack is designed to make it easier and quicker to produce.”

Leading Rehau trade fabricator Shepley has added even more doors to its comprehensive Visage Composite Door Collection. “Door fashions are moving fast,” says Shepley’s sales and marketing director Ian Griffiths. “We have added Powder Blue and Sage Green to our colours. The three new designs are Windsor Cottage, a traditional half glazed door, the stunning modern Belvoir with full height glazing and sleek pullbar handles, and the very beautiful Windsor Astragal, a stylish period design with sandblasted glass.”

Shepley has also added full height matching decorative glass side screens, solving a longstanding industry problem for installers and offering even more opportunities to sell composite doors.

“There are three additions to the glass designs too. The 1920s saw the rise of decorative glass and the new additions Charleston and Caledonian Rose use this period as their inspiration. Reflections offers hand crafted styling for consumers looking for something exclusive.

“Front doors are as original as their owners, and customers will find what they’re looking for in the latest Visage

Composite Door Collection brochure. The 36 page brochure makes it really easy to choose a combination and is filled with photos showing all the designs and colours available, and the extensive glass options including the stunning Inox brushed stainless steel glazing range.

“The new brochure also includes a door checklist after high praise for the popular ‘what to look for in a window’ check list in the Visage Enhance brochure. This details what consumers should look for when

choosing a door and gives them a tick list to check off themselves.

“Today’s consumers are better at buying than ever before. They are used to comparing one product with another and the Visage check list gives them the opportunity to compare the technical stuff that often gets overlooked, as well as choosing by design.”

As G13 Promotional Campaign of the Year – Retail winner and G14 finalist in the same category, it comes as no surprise that composite door pioneer, Solidor, came away from Grand Designs Live 2014 at the Birmingham NEC with a number of qualified leads.Based on the Channel 4 TV series and presented by design guru Kevin McCloud, the event was packed with over 500 exhibitors across six different sections, covering interiors, gardens, food and housewares, kitchens and bathrooms, home improvement, self-build, renovations, technology and shopping. This was the second year that Solidor exhibited at the show with interest again high in their second generation composite doors.

This year the show was extended by a further day to cope with demand from visitors and it’s been estimated

that around 60,000 visitors came to the show, up 10,000 on the 2013 official figures. Over the course of the 4 days, approximately 200 qualified leads were taken by Solidor, taking into consideration the use of their web-based Door Designer software on four iPads that were on display and also the fact that consumers looking to create their own door, harnessed this technology after the event.

Solidor’s consumer facing brand has not only captured the imagination of the trade sector, but also in the eyes of homeowners looking to add a stylish door to their property. The impressive range of door designs from the luxurious Italia Collection to the more traditional, along with 17 colours and woodgrains inside and out and exclusive range of hardware are just some of the key features that set a Solidor composite door apart from it’s peers. But it’s not just the external visual aesthetics that set it apart, as their use of a solid hardwood timber core and the promise of a UK manufactured product are also key influences.

Gareth Mobley, managing director of Solidor Group comments: ‘We’ve again captured the imagination of consumers with our products and marketing at Grand Designs and look forward to feeding the leads into our Recommended and Premium Installers. Our growth really does not show any signs of abating and we’re actively investing in the business to ensure we keep the momentum going.’

The latest glass technology used in combination with integral blinds is enabling Morley Glass and Glazing to deliver the optimum solution for the booming bi-fold doors market. According to Ian Short, managing director of Leeds-based Morley Glass & Glazing, homeowners can will only get the most satisfaction from their bi-fold doors when the configuration properly balances the risk of summertime overheating with effective insulation during the winter.

Ian says: “There is no doubt that the evolution of bi-fold doors has been fantastic for the door and window industry. Advances in glazing technology have contributed to the take-up of bi-fold doors as homeowners and specifiers can confidently choose them without compromising comfort.

“The family of low-e softcoat Planitherm glasses has long been our choice for sealed units for all types of application. But when it comes to bi-fold doors, we’ve found the perfect solution in Planitherm 4S thanks to its ability to manage solar gain during summer and keep the heat in during colder months.”

One gLaSS faMiLy, MuLTiPLe aPPLicaTiOnS

Morley Glass & Glazing was an early adopter of low-e softcoat Planitherm glass more than a decade ago. Working closely with supplier GLASSOLUTIONS, the company has over the years been continually fine-tuning its glass specification to keep ahead of ever toughening Part L requirements without compromising comfort or aesthetics.

He continues: “Today’s thermal insulation requirements mean that ‘A’ Window Energy Ratings (WERs) – and now ‘A+’ - are the logical choice for homeowners. As consumers, we have all become familiar with the rating system on everything from light bulbs to fridge-freezers and now car tyres. So offering the highest ratings on bi-fold doors is a no brainer.

“But increasing the insulation level where you have a large expanse of glass can lead to problems – we only have to go back to the early days of PVC-U conservatories for the evidence. That’s why we use Planitherm 4S for sealed units for bi-fold doors. It means we can give customers the assurance that the glass will help control the internal comfort and help maximise satisfaction without the need for mechanical assistance such as costly heaters or air-conditioning units for cooling.”

Saint-Gobain Glass manufactured Planitherm 4S features a special coating which enables the sealed unit to deliver a dual benefit.

It means that Morley Glass is manufacturing sealed units that can reflect up to 57% of the sun’s heat when used in conservatory sidewalls and doors, whilst delivering a U-value performance of just 1.0 W/m2K.

OuTSTanDing ViSuaL aPPeaL – SeaLeD-in

One of the biggest selling points for bi-fold doors has been visual appeal – and this is another area where Morley’s sealed unit customers are benefiting.

Ian adds: “Let’s not underestimate the importance of the clarity of the glass. There is no point in selling a homeowner an innovative, stylish bi-fold door-set if they are only going to be disappointed by the poor clarity of the sealed units. That’s another dimension to Planitherm 4S – its coating does not give the glass a colour haze and therefore means the view through the bi-fold doors is crystal clear.”

Morley Glass also helps installers to optimise the visual appeal of their bi-fold door installations through Uni-Blinds® integral blinds. These are particularly well-suited to bi-folds as traditional blinds and curtains are too obstructive and cumbersome to work in conjunction with the folding action of the doors.

A variety of colour options with Uni-Blinds provides a strong selling point for installers. This includes the unique and extremely popular Venetian blinds slat colour anthracite grey (S159), which is equivalent to RAL 7016 and now accounts for around 30% of total Uni-Blinds sales.

“We’re seeing strong demand for Uni-Blinds from bi-fold door fabricators and installers who want to give their customers the finishing touch to the installation,” says Ian. “The blinds are sealed within the sealed unit which means they don’t get in the way, never need cleaning or maintenance and the colour range means they will suit all tastes.

“Uni-Blinds are the final piece of the jigsaw. Using Planitherm 4S means we can deliver the bi-fold doors’ thermal insulation, solar gain management and clarity. Uni-Blinds provide the stylish, unobtrusive and low maintenance long term privacy solution. It’s also a fantastic up-sell opportunity for installers as homeowners are often keen to complete their door installation with the simplicity of a single supplier.”

Morley Glass & Glazing is the biggest supplier of ScreenLine blinds in the UK with weekly deliveries nationwide using its own vehicle fleet. Order lead times from any Friday for all manual blinds is just 10 working days.

Distinction Doors, the UK’s largest supplier of GRP composite doors has just announced that sales of its fire doors are up 25% year on year. Chantel Roach, Distinction’s Marketing Manager said, “We are delighted that the quality of our fire doors is being reflected in the strong sales increase.”

Distinction Doors’ GRP composite fire doors are supplied by the world leading manufacturer Nan Ya Plastics and offer the exceptional quality and attention to detail that Distinction’s customers will be familiar with. When fitted correctly, the doors will resist fire for a period of 30 or 60 minutes, in accordance with British Standard BS 476-22 or BS EN 1634-1. They also have the same commitment to aesthetics as Distinction’s standard doors, so their high quality visual appearance is not compromised by the safety aspects.

The high quality construction of the fire doors includes stiles and rails of hardwood lamels, finger jointed together which are bonded to the skin. The phenolic foam is constructed from fire retardant phenolic resin, flame retardant foaming and curing agents at a density of 0.075 g/cm3. The compression moulded door skins are manufactured from 2mm thick thermoset GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester). Finally, performance on the FD60 fire

door is enhanced with a layer of glass fibre matting applied to the inside of the inner and outer skins.

The sad truth is that fire is one of the biggest dangers we face: statistics show that in 2011/2012 there were 37,600 accidental fires in UK dwellings. When they meet the correct standards, fire doors can help to minimise the danger to property and life. And when they’re a Distinction fire door, homeowners can enjoy both peace of mind and superior aesthetics. Judging by the sales figures, it’s clear that this is an extremely attractive combination!

Freefoam announce a significant increase in the number of installations registered for its 50 year Lifetime Guarantee. Figures are up by 13% overall year on year, with some areas of the UK seeing an increase of an incredible 45%.Freefoam achieved another first in 2012 with the introduction of the first ever 50 years Lifetime Guarantee on white PVC-U and PVC-UE roofline, rainwater and cladding products. In the last 18 months this development has helped Freefoam stockists and Registered Installers gain a significant competitive advantage in today’s challenging market. Installers are using the benefits of this extended warranty to engage with consumers and subsequently convert leads into orders with Freefoam seeing the number of guarantee registrations rising steadily year on year.

Jason Large, Simply Roofline in Peterborough explained. “We’ve been

registered installers of Freefoam products since 2007. We use the benefits of the Lifetime Guarantee extensively in our sales pitch, it makes a great selling tool and breaks down the barriers to lead conversions.”

Making, and guaranteeing, long life products is a life-long company commitment by Freefoam that involves both technical and manufacturing resources and the cumulative experience of products in use over many years. Freefoam has built up an extensive databank of registered installations with detailed product information spanning many years. With intensive technical work on advanced lead-free product formulations, work with external partners and first hand evidence of many years of their weathering in a wide range of testing climates, plus accelerated weathering tests of up to 50 years, has established unrivalled knowledge of how products perform.

The Freefoam Lifetime Guarantee can be offered by any Freefoam Registered Installer on all white products including Reveal Liner, Full Replacement fascia,

Soffit, rainwater systems and cladding. Installation work is registered on line and certificates are sent directly to the consumer from the manufacturer. What’s more all guarantees are transferable, allowing future homeowners to still see the benefits of the guarantee many years after initial fitting.

Aidan Harte, Managing Director summarised: “We know that roofline and home improvement markets are highly competitive and want to give Freefoam Registered Installers the best chance of winning business. These figures show that giving consumers guaranteed peace of mind is a winning formula.”

Since it was unveiled at this year’s FIT Show, The VEKA UK Group’s Approved Installer initiative has already welcomed over 100 members onto its books. The key aim of the scheme is to assist installers with selling VEKA and Halo products and there are a whole host of tools to assist them. These include valuable sales leads from a dedicated consumer-facing website and access to exclusive, professionally-designed marketing materials. Add into this that it’s free of charge to become an Approved Installer and it’s easy to see why the uptake has been so immediate!

In addition to the first 100 Approved Installers, there are also around 40 Approved Fabricators who are now eligible to approve their installer customers. Amy Grundy, National Sales Manager for the Approved Installer scheme, is thrilled by the positive reaction it has received from the outset:

“To have hit the milestone of 100 Approved Installers, eager to show their commitment to using high-spec VEKA and Halo products, is a great result for the scheme – particularly this early in its history. I’ve seen the initial buzz that surrounded our launch at the FIT Show develop into ever-growing numbers of companies, keen to become Approved Installers and benefit from the support available.”

Key to the Approved Installer marketing support offering are the online Marketing Hubs, where users can access a wide range of marketing templates for items such as drop cards, retail brochures, pop-up stands and more. All of the items can be personalised at the click of a button and are preloaded to display the installer’s full contact details, with their branding taking centre stage, supported by the Approved logo.

Amy concludes: “We’re ecstatic with the response that the Approved Installer initiative has received. Homeowners benefit from great products and workmanship, Approved Installers get great leads and promotion – all with the backing of the industry’s most-recognised name, and Approved Fabricators can rely on return trade and client loyalty. With incentives like that, I’m already looking forward to greeting our next 100 Approved Installers.”

Two beautifully designed £1.2 million family homes in the South Hertfordshire village of Cuffley were recently finished using a variety of products from the frameXpress range. Each property represents the finest hallmark of modern family living, with the meticulously designed homes offering only the highest standards to new homeowners.

Each five bedroomed property provides the best in luxurious living, including cinema rooms, four en-suite bathrooms and modern gym areas. The frameXpress customers wished to ensure that these properties offered a premium standard to reflect the quality of craftsmanship throughout.

In the ultra modern kitchen, state of the art lantern aluminium roofing systems were installed as well as the latest in aluminium bifold doors in order to maximise on light entering the building.

Both luxury properties had identical floor plans which were designed to incorporate the very latest high performance, energy efficient windows and doors as well as composite doors to meet building regulation requirements. In order to maintain a more traditional external appearance, white astragal bars were fitted to some of the windows manufactured in the Profile 22 System.

Security was a vital aspect to be included with both homes entered through oak gates whilst being complemented

by the highest specification Yale locking systems that were incorporated by frameXpress.

For the frameXpress customers, who placed performance and aesthetics over cost competitive pricing, the installation has been a complete success. As one of the UK’s leading trade fabricators frameXpress is well established as a supplier of premium products to the industry with quality guarantees, Secured By Design and first-class safety options fitted as standard.

Ian Davis, Sales Manager at frameXpress comments, “It is evident from sales figures that the diversity of the frameXpress range has been encouraging customers to develop their business potential and given them broader scope. The proven reliability of the company’s complete range combined with striking aesthetic choices in both upvc and aluminium has led to very positive trading figures.”

The properties now benefit from extensive light and excellent soundproofing thanks to the installation of thermally efficient products from the frameXpress range.

Ian concludes, “A desire for more dynamic, luxurious design combined with everyday use has seen a flurry of innovation over the last few years across the building sector and this continues to provide installers with substantial opportunities. Our breadth of choice which caters for this diversity is proving increasingly popular with customers.”

REHAU fabricator Dessian Products has opened a third branch in its Windowmate trade counter network.Windowmate in Balloo Road, Bangor, Co Down opened its doors in July but celebrated with an official opening conducted by Councillor Peter Martin, the Mayor of North Down, at the beginning of October.

The new branch features an extensive showroom with Dessian’s complete range of REHAU TOTAL70 and REHAU Tritec 60mm frames on display, alongside uPVC and composite doors, glass, roofline and ancillary products. Trade customers can use the new showroom to invite homeowners to view the range of products available. to trade and retail customers and on keeping them up to date with the latest technical advice and product innovations.

With Windowmate branches already open in Belfast alongside Dessian’s extensive manufacturing facility and in Cumbernauld at its Scottish headquarters, Bangor was chosen for the third location because there is strong demand for high quality REHAU frames in the area.

“We’re really pleased to have been made an approved Edgetech Super Spacer Dealership Fabricator,” says Jim Churchill MD of JWC Windows Ltd. “The Dealership is a strong package and forms part of plans to develop the trade business with an extended guarantee, free marketing support and sales leads from Edgetech.”

With more than 25 years’ experience fabricating windows, doors and conservatories for trade in Rotherham, JWC Windows made a significant investment into manufacturing its own sealed units with Edgetech Super Spacer last year.

Jim adds: “After a hugely successful first year for the new glass unit shop, we have far exceeded the initial budget

forecasts. We use Saint Gobain glass and Edgetech Super Spacer in our units. We knew about Super Spacer’s reputation for giving the best energy performance so when we started manufacturing units we talked to Edgetech. We were impressed with the speed of application and the savings it has made to labour costs and productivity.”

Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at Edgetech adds: “The Dealership has been an integral part of the marketing support we offer to customers for 6 years. Speaking to customers, the market is experiencing a promising upturn so we’re working with customers to develop the Super Spacer Dealership package to make the most of it. It’s great to hear that customers like JWC Windows are already seeing the advantages of this and we’ll be announcing new member benefits later this year.”

When performance is everything…

Following Synseal’s acquisition of the business and assets of Prospect Inc. Ltd trading as Systems Glass to create Global Glass Wigan, it has become the latest company to switch to TruPlas rigid spacer bar manufactured by Edgetech, a Quanex company. Synseal started Global Glass operations in November 2011 and began to use volume quantities of TruPlas rigid spacer bar last year. So when it acquired Systems Glass earlier this year it immediately made additional investment plans to increase the existing capacity from 9,000 IGUs per week and turned to Edgetech once again to support them in switching to the superior performance of TruPlas.

“Having an additional well-placed IGU manufacturing facility at Wigan will assist us in offering the full range of Synseal products to our customer base in the north. IGUs are an important part of our product mix and are helping to drive significant sales growth,” says Steve Musgrave, Synseal’s Manufacturing Director. “Synseal has been making sealed units with TruPlas rigid spacer bar for a fair while now, so gearing up our new

Global Glass Wigan operation to start using TruPlas was an easy decision for us.

“We have a strong working relationship with Edgetech and TruPlas rigid spacer bar has proven to be a high performing warm edge spacer bar, so we were confident when committing the necessary investments to provide new production machinery for Global Glass Wigan.”

For more information on Edgetech’s range of Warm Edge Technology, call 08700 566844 or visit www.edgetechig.co.uk.

“One day all windows will be installed this way,” predicts Alan Fielder, Director of Sales and Marketing at the recent launch of TruFit by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company. “We’ve shown that TruFit is the best way to install windows for energy efficiency. And it has the added benefit of being quick – up to 20 percent faster – simple and very clean to fit.”

TruFit is a pre-compressed foam sealing tape for window and door installation. It provides an effective thermal barrier at the edge gap between the window or door frame and the reveal. This ensures true energy rating performance and a long-life weather seal.

The results in thermal imaging are impressive. Tests of installations with traditional sealant showed how much heat is lost at the edge of the windows. When the same window was

fitted using TruFit there was on average 23 percent less heat lost around the window fitted.

“It’s not a question of good or bad installation techniques,” adds Alan. “TruFit works by expanding to effectively seal all gaps and spaces between the frame and wall.”

TruFit also improves comfort levels because it reduces draughts caused by cold spots. This is recognised as one of the best ways to reduce heating bills. Even the slightest draft can make us ‘feel cold’ and we often turn up the thermostat to compensate. Take away the draughts and the ambient temperature maintains at a more even level giving us the highest level of comfort.

“TruFit not only saves money for installers and property owners it’s also a great sales opportunity. With so many benefits we believe that all windows in the future will be installed this way. Don’t just fit it, TruFit it!”

GLASS & GLAZING

The biggest exhibition in the world did not disappoint visitors or exhibitors as it proved to have everything for everyone. Michael Gannon reports from Düsseldorf, GermanyHaving been to many continental European trade shows in different sectors over the years, one has to confess something. There is always a problem with events like these; they are so massive that one person can only get a snapshot of what is going on.

Having said that, certain areas – automotive, crafts and hollow glass – were beyond the remit of MyTradeTV but that still left an enormous number of stands dealing with the built environment. So, what did glasstec 2014 have that drew thousands from all over the world to see?

One thing that had to be addressed by the organiser was the contraction in both exhibitors and visitors during the recession years. In both cases, it would seem a corner has been turned. There were 1,217 exhibitors – compared with 1,175 two years ago, and the organiser, Messe Düsseldorf, reported that the visitor levels, coming from 86 countries, stood at about the same; 43,000, as opposed to 42,414 in 2012.

One aspect to glasstec was missing and that was solarpeq. Started when the solar sector was appearing to boom, it has fallen foul of some damaging government ‘hits’, both in Germany and elsewhere, leading to such a contraction, that it was no longer viable to have it as a ‘show within a show’ event.

Talking exclusively to MyTradeTV, Director, Birgit Horn stated she was satisfied with

the event this year. "We are very happy that the visitor numbers of glasstec 2014 have reached the same level as in 2012. Even more important is, that these visitors were highly satisfied. This combination shows that the international glass sector is on an upturn again." This was backed up by a survey at this year’s glasstec that showed that 96% of the visitors gave it a positive overall rating.

They also rated their visit in terms of achieving their goals at the trade fair just as high. Some 40% of visitors came to the event with specific intentions to invest and the proportion of these was from middle and top management; over 66% of the visitors were from these levels. The proportion of the visitors coming to Düsseldorf from abroad was about 60%.

fuTure THeMeS

The point about glasstec is that it is more than an exhibition. The world’s leading experts meet every two years to discuss the issues of today as well as those of tomorrow.

The comprehensive supporting programme at glasstec, which was further extended this year, with Glass Technology Live (GTL) in Hall 11. It was organised by Professor Stefan Behling and his team from the Institute of Building

Construction at Stuttgart University with the theme Intelligent Glass, and glass products from the near future were on display here.

The results of a visitor survey confirmed that the selection of exhibits displayed at GTL hit the right note, including display glass/technical glass applications, glass printing/coating as well as ‘thin’ glass.

A special attraction was a 3.2m x 14m pane of glass finished using a ceramic digital printing process. Another highlight was display glass used in alternative areas of application and ultra-thin glass ‘from the roll’ for electronic applications.

Other audience favourites were numerous facade mock-ups, e.g. extraordinary geometries, fascinating optical effects or outstanding insulation properties, including using four-layer insulation glass.

GTL was accompanied by a specialist symposium offering – within the exhibition area of GTL – a variety of lectures on daily changing themes which was well attended by visitors.

exHiBiTOrS

In this report, we can only give a flavour of what the exhibitors thought but the ones below we have received immediately after the event, are typical of the experience they had at glasstec:

The company presented product developments such as the chemically strengthened glass products Dragontrail X and Leoflex, screen-printed Clearvision glass louvres and laminated glass with organic solar films, providing significant energy ‘harvesting’ to reduce a building’s carbon footprint. It was also fully involved with GTL where it displayed its thin glass products.

Football dugouts may seem a long way from the world of sophisticated glass but AGC, (see image) provided the world’s first glass roofs for player and official benches at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 football tournament in Brazil with roofs that incorporated AGC’s Dragontrail cover glass technology, the same used in smartphone, tablet and television displays.

Bohle

Dave Broxton, Managing Director, Bohle UK – “On the back of double digit growth in 2014, glasstec was the icing on the cake for Bohle with interest, and more importantly, orders across the whole range of products. The turnout of visitors from the UK was much higher

than we expected, meaning at times we had people sitting in our hospitality area waiting to be seen but people were patient…As an expression of business confidence it definitely had the wow factor but more importantly we are already seeing a return on our investment.”

Bystronic

Peter Nischwitz, Head of Corporate Communication, Bystronic glass – “Our bottom line is very positive. From the start, we saw high calibre visitors at our exhibition stand. The number of visitors was just right, too, and we’re confident that the industry as a whole will also return to a positive trajectory. We look forward to some really, really great follow up business after the trade fair.”

interpane (with agc)

It has been two years since the launch of the strategic alliance between AGC Glass Europe and Interpane Glas Industrie AG. At glasstec 2014 in Düsseldorf the two companies presented numerous highlights from their completely revised product range: the main focus was on the new insulating glass portfolio, but there was plenty to see in new types of solar control glass, decorative glass products for interiors and architecture, building integrated photovoltaics and heatable glazing. One of the products that Interpane focused on was Stopray Ultra-50 on Clearvision that offers high daylight transmission, effective solar

control, and is especially colour-neutral in appearance.

ritec international

Steve Byers, Managing Director, Ritec International – “Glasstec 2014 was the best show we had experienced by far since we started exhibiting in 1986.We had a fantastic reception to the launch of our next generation ClearShield Eco-System, where visitors could see for themselves the added value, profit and performance of this component which adds value every step of the glass supply chain. Interest was also high for our other new developments too. We are delighted to already report positive feedback, new leads and early business opportunities as a result of our presence at the show. We also made a big step in raising awareness of the hidden hazards in the misapplication of glass surface treatments and will continue to support greater understanding in this area.”

Thermoseal

Samantha Hill, Marketing Manager, Thermoseal – “Although we were only a stone’s throw from our 2012 stand, the position and shape of our 2014 stand seemed to work much better for us. Our pre-show promotion also brought many more of our UK customers to see us and we had a great deal more general interest from show visitors than the previous show. We now have double the number of enquiries we have in 2012 and many of these are quality sales leads.”

There was little time to sit down at this year’s glasstec but when they did, professionals had plenty to talk about.

It was great to see broad International interest in Thermoseal Group’s own products – Thermobar and Thermoflex Warm Edge Spacers. There was also a great deal of interest in our ancillary equipment to manually process Thermoflex and automatic spacer bar benders for Thermobar.

“If you didn’t get chance to attend the show, we have introduced new multilingual websites dedicated to our warm edge products so please feel free to login to www.thermobarwarmedge.com

“I was, of course, also happy to hear some excellent feedback on the Group’s branding and presence at the show. This in addition to the excellent feedback we had from the 250 customers and guests who attended our ThermoBAR at McLaughlin’s Irish bar gave us a real buzz at the show.

WB GROUP has hailed its recent online overhaul a big success after positive early feedback from its customers. The North East-based business commissioned two new mobile responsive websites from the industry’s digital specialists, The Consultancy. The company, which fabricates and manufactures PVCu windows and doors, PVCu door infill panels & GRP composite doors approached The Consultancy looking for a new WB Home brand, a bespoke online ordering system, a door-designer and two separate homeowner and trade websites.

The Consultancy delivered the full package giving WB Group a complete online system, which was recently launched.

Tony Craggs, Managing Director of WB Group, said: “The two websites and online ordering system have just launched and although it’s early days they’re already making an impact. We are getting excellent feedback from both homeowners and trade customers.”

The Consultancy designed two websites; one specifically for trade customers and one for homeowners called WB Home. The new WB Group site (www.wbgroup.co.uk) is mobile responsive and allows traders to login through the new WB Gateway where they can access a tailored online ordering system.

The site WB Home (www.wbhome.co.uk) was a complete new venture for the company and was branded by The Consultancy.

The site is mobile responsive and was built to support the company’s trade users, giving them an extra marketing tool to point customers towards. It allows homeowners to see all of WB Group’s products as well as use the bespoke Door Designer, which sends quotes instantly through to traders.

Tony added: “I knew The Consultancy was the way to go after speaking to others in the industry. After some initial research about the company and seeing

their portfolio I decided to enquire and sent through an email.

“They quickly responded and set up a meeting, from an initial brief I had created they talked me through the services they provided and how they would be able to tailor each product to meet our needs.

“Because of the nature of the project and the specifics we were looking for, I was able to work closely with The Consultancy, having regular meetings and phone calls to keep up with progress and ensure everything fit to our exact specifications.

“From the first point of contact until completion The Consultancy delivered everything they set out to do within a short time period. They are responsive, flexible and I would not hesitate to recommend them.”

WB Group’s project is another to add to The Consultancy’s growing portfolio. On top of an already successful year the company has also been shortlisted for the Digital Specialist 2014 by the National Fenestration Awards.

Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy, said: “It’s brilliant when

we get projects such as WB Group as it really allows us to show people what we’re good at and the full package we can provide.

“We’ve already begun working on future projects and cannot wait to continue our strong partnership.”

Latest figures show that Network VEKA member companies are cumulatively installing orders worth over £1m on a weekly basis, with their market share increasing due to active on and offline marketing efforts. The elite group of independent window companies came together in the mid 1990s to counter the double-glazing sector’s growing notoriety for pushy sales techniques and rogue operators. Now more than 130 companies strong, Network VEKA registrations have reached an eight year high, demonstrating how a professionally-promoted, customer-centric approach to business can weather even the toughest economic climate.

Only companies that meet Network VEKA’s exacting standards of workmanship and customer service are admitted as members, and a continuous process of training and auditing ensures they retain the qualities that led to their induction. For its part, Network VEKA offers the most comprehensive marketing, online, and lead-generation support systems of any PVC-U window, door and conservatory industry body.

Recognising the power of the internet for business referrals, Network VEKA’s suite of powerful online tools allows members to monitor the impact of their online presence. This, combined with a subsidised website design and build service, instantly puts its members at an advantage over their unaffiliated rivals.

Network VEKA’s MD, John Ogilvie, explains: “After personal recommendations, the internet has quickly become the “first port of call” for homeowners looking to improve their property. With the home improvement industry becoming more and more competitive, Network VEKA’s Web Tools allow members to capitalise on this with a strong online presence and a professional-looking website.”

Member companies who surpass Network VEKA’s already-high standards are commended at the annual awards ceremony. This year Oldham’s AWC Windows received the ‘Embracing and Promotion of the Network VEKA Brand’ award for the North from Brand Ambassador, Steve Davis. Thanks in part to its investment in a new website, range of web tools and showroom rebranding, the company has seen sales over the past year increase by nearly 30%.

Rugby Double Glazing took the equivalent award for the South, having seen its business grow by 25% following a relaunch in-line with Network VEKA branding, including web enhancements, vehicle graphics and window badges.

Both companies used Network VEKA’s Marketing Portal; an online resource of marketing materials, professionally-designed by an award-winning agency, that can be personalised to include company livery, contact details, etc.

MD of Rugby Double Glazing, Simon Wade, explains: “The vehicle graphics, for example, have smartened up the vans, clearly show our contact details, the Steve Davis imagery and the Network VEKA logo - reflecting our professionalism. We’ve found that it’s a great talking point as people stop to ask our fitters why we have a picture of Steve Davis. It gives us a chance to explain more about Network VEKA and why Steve is happy to act as Brand Ambassador for the organisation.”

Across the Network, the monetary volume of registrations received in the first four months of 2014 was up 20% on the same period in 2013; a trend that John Ogilvie is confident will continue: “Network VEKA really gives members the chance to compete against bigger players in the industry and our logo, branding and subsidised marketing help shout their achievements from the rooftops. We’re certain other installers will see how being part of the Network could help grow their business and look forward to welcoming more companies that share our commitment to quality.”

More than 200 people attended Network VEKA’s Black Tie Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony. Held at Eastwood Hall Nottingham, the organisation was pleased to welcome eight new member companies to the event. The evening was hosted by Network VEKA’s Brand Ambassador Steve Davis and began with a champagne reception. This was followed by an audience with the Six-Times World Snooker Champion, who answered questions from the audience about his snooker career and his time in the ‘I’m a Celebrity’ Jungle.

Network VEKA MD John Ogilvie was delighted to join Steve Davis in announcing some exciting new initiatives for 2015 as well as naming the evening’s award winners. Regional winners are decided based on the collated feedback of nearly 16,000 households across Britain and Ireland – every single customer of every member company, for the whole year.

John says: “It’s always a pleasure to see member companies stand up to receive their awards. The standards we set for our membership are so high that we know every single member company is offering their customers exceptional quality and service. This means the award winners have beaten the best of the best to claim their trophy. They should all be very proud of themselves!

“I think it’s fair to say that Thistle Windows and Conservatories deserves a special mention. The results not only proved the home improvements provider to be the Overall National Winner for the 2nd year in a row, but also the Regional

Winner for Scotland - for the 13th time! With more than £5m Network VEKA sales registered and the highest aggregate score, Thistle has certainly set the benchmark for next year’s awards.

“We’re already looking forward to celebrating next year’s AGM and Awards Ceremony, which will be hosted by Steve Davis once again, and will be held in Stratford upon Avon in March.”

After the awards, attendees enjoyed a four-course meal and danced to a live band until the early hours. Charity envelopes were collected on the night and a generous £600 was raised for The British Legion.

Industry-leading PVC-U systems supplier The VEKA UK Group has been shortlisted for a fantastic FOUR G Awards ahead of the Presentation Evening and Gala Dinner to be held at the end of November. The Group has been nominated for ‘Commercial Project of the Year’ thanks to Bowater Projects winning the tender for the Anchor National Window Replacement Project 2013/14. This involved fully refurbishing 28 sheltered housing developments across the UK, using Halo’s System10 and TwinSash windows, along with PVC-U residential doors and roofline.

Halo’s TwinSash system ensured the Group’s nomination for ‘Environmental Initiative of the Year’ as it’s the first window to achieve an Acoustic ‘A’ Rating under the BM TRADA Q-Mark Window Acoustic Rating Scheme.

The Company’s long-standing commitment to Apprenticeships has seen it shortlisted for ‘Training & Development Initiative of the Year’. After 20 years of training and supporting young people at the start of their career, The VEKA UK Group’s Apprenticeship programme still remains at the core of the company’s business and development strategy.

A nomination for ‘Promotional Trade Campaign of the Year’ is thanks to a couple of unusual characters...! Colin Torley, Sales and Marketing Director of The VEKA UK Group explains: “We’re very pleased with our ‘Lasting Relationships’ campaign. It featured the quirky images of an elephant and a dog that was unlike anything in the industry at the time and really seemed to get people talking.

“The campaign conveyed how much we appreciate our long-standing

partnerships with fabricator customers, and how the size and strength of The VEKA UK Group can really benefit businesses of all sizes. The animal characters were a great talking point with potential customers and we received 66 sales leads in the first month alone of the campaign going live.”

“This campaign evolved to incorporate our new Approved Fabricator and Installer initiative with a ‘dating’ website called Fab-match.com, designed to pair Installers with Fabricators in their local area. We’re delighted to see so many

of our customers also shortlisted for G Awards again this year! Two of our Halo Approved Fabricators have been nominated for ‘Fabricator of the Year’. Halifax-based Polyframe has made the shortlist, and Listers has been nominated for an incredible 10th time, as well as joining us as a finalist for ‘Environmental Initiative of the Year’!

The coveted ‘Installer of the Year’ shortlist also includes VEKA Approved Installer KJM.

Thistle Windows and Conservatories, a long-standing VEKA installer, has been nominated for ‘Conservatory Installer of the Year’.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be up for four awards, and we’re equally excited to see our customers recognised for all their hard work. We’re looking forward to getting together and celebrating, whatever the results, at the prestigious London Awards Evening.”

Building on its reputation for adding value to glazing Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, launched an exciting range of products for the manufacture and installation of value added windows at its 25th anniversary celebrations at Great John Street Hotel in Manchester. Edgetech has been at the forefront of top energy efficient windows for 25 years, and this year it’s expanded its product range for companies looking for ways to enhance their glazing or installation offering. Already this year, Edgetech has added TruPlas and TruPlas SDL to its ever expanding product portfolio, and now there are four more products creating new opportunities for IGU manufacturers, fabricators and installers.

At its product launch in Manchester on 8 October, Edgetech showed guests the new additions Super Spacer Alpha, TruFit, TruSieve and TruShield.

“These new products are designed to support customers and dealers, enabling them to differentiate themselves with next generation, high performance products,” said Andy Jones, Managing Director of Edgetech UK.

At the launch official thermal test results for its new foam spacer were revealed as 0.13W/m2K, making Super Spacer Alpha the best performing warm edge spacer in the world.

Edgetech also launched TruFit, warm edge for windows. It’s an expanding tape that perfectly seals around the frame to the brickwork making the complete installation energy efficient and weathertight. So much of the UK’s housing stock is older and it’s difficult to get a good fit all round. TruFit reduces heat loss by up to 23 percent at the edge of the frame and saves up to 20 percent fitting time making it cost effective for both homeowner and installer.

During the presentation there was a live demonstration to show how fast, easy and clean TruFit is to install.

TruSieve desiccant was the third product addition. It gives IGU manufacturers a

reliable and superior quality desiccant with high adsorption capacity keeping the unit free from moisture.

The final product was TruShield. It is a high quality coating that bonds to glass and makes it easy to clean. Unlike many other products, TruShield doesn’t depend on specific environmental conditions. This means it will work in all locations, including north-facing windows as well as those in the sun, so the benefits will be seen even on shaded glass.

The product launch was part of the silver jubilee celebrations as Edgetech celebrates its 25th anniversary on 1 December 2014. Joined by long standing customers, suppliers and press, Edgetech’s guests enjoyed spectacular views of the Manchester skyline from the rooftop of Great John Street Hotel.

Guest and longstanding customer Adrian Barraclough, Quickslide’s CEO, added: “It’s evident that Edgetech is in business for the long term and it’s very comforting to have a partner company who is at the top of their game and continuously looking for ways to improve our industry efficiencies.”

“The G-14 Awards is a highlight in the glazing calendar and a fantastic evening out.”

“Importantly, the awards recognise the achievements of companies and the standard is always very high.”

“Our campaign has been very successful in winning sales and new customers, so we’re delighted to be nominated.”

Quickslide has been shortlisted as finalist in the G14 awards for best Training and Development Initiative with a submission that was personally signed by every member of the workforce. The Yorkshire-based fabricator, that has always regarded its people as part of its commitment to World Class Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement, won the placement after reporting how the company reviewed and revised all of its planning, training and development procedures and is now looking to gain six-figure savings as a result.

Chairman Adrian Barraclough explained: “It is only natural that every member of

the team should sign as a part of the submission because every one of them played their part in the review and in the continuing success it has brought us. In just the same way, if we are chosen as winners, they can all be equally as proud of the trophy.”

The submission spells out how Quickslide first identified its shortcomings and their

causes, then how to overcome each one individually. Adrian added: “The result was that every member of the workforce became accountable problem solvers, understanding that this is their business and they will shape its future and benefit from its success. There are now many training systems that seamlessly align each department to the achievement of our vision.”

Quickslide is best-known for its acclaimed sliding sash windows, and the company has been instrumental in bringing this former niche product into the mainstream of the retrofit and new-build markets, but it also manufactures a wide range of other styles of windows and doors for trade, commercial and domestic customers.

One of the largest events in the glazing industry’s calendar in 2014 has received its third award nomination of the year.Triple Glazing Question (TGQ), an initiative led by Edgetech UK, a Quanex company, has been named as a finalist for Best Use of Events and Live Marketing in the prestigious Construction Marketing Awards 2014.

The shortlisted TGQ event brought together the entire window industry to discuss triple glazing. Over 30

companies and industry influencers supported the initiative as stakeholders, speakers and experts and it attracted unprecedented levels of interest with over 600 registered attendees. TGQ dominated the pages of the trade press with the debate about triple glazing for more than six months.

The aim of TGQ was to give companies the facts about how increased volumes of triple glazing could impact the entire supply chain, enabling businesses to make informed decisions and ensure the supply of triple glazing would be sustainable in the longer term.

Andy Jones, managing director of Edgetech UK says: “To have the Triple Glazing Question recognised as being one of the best events this year in the wider construction industry is phenomenal.

“TGQ was a great success. It gave the industry a chance to start the discussion about the challenges and opportunities of triple glazing and to get factual information and answers to prominent questions.”

Triple Glazing Question is competing against three companies for the Best use of Events and Live Marketing Award.

The winners will be announced on Wednesday 3 December at an evening ceremony at Radisson Blu Hotel on Portman Square in London.

GLASS & GLAZING

Lister Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent has just hit a new industry milestone; 2014 has seen them achieve 10 consecutive years being nominated as finalists in the country’s preeminent, National Glass and Glazing, G-Awards.This year they have been nominated in two categories of the awards; Fabricator of the Year and Environmental Initiative of the Year.

Listers first tried for the Awards back in 2005 and despite it being the first ever competition that they had entered they took the top prize of ‘Fabricator of the Year’, which came as a complete but happy surprise. This gave them the confidence to enter the following year where they won the ‘Training and Development’ award.

Since 2005, Listers have entered the G-Awards every year without fail and they have been nominated finalists on an amazing 20 occasions. They have been winners 8 times at the awards event, including 3 times winners of the ‘Fabricator of the Year’ award and in 2012 they were chosen to receive the prestigious Derrek Bonnard Award for Excellence.

So how do they do it? Mark Warren, Listers’ Managing Director says that they get chosen each year for several reasons: “Firstly… you have to enter!” says Mark, a little tongue in cheek, but very true! “You have to have a good story to tell about what you have achieved over the last 12 months, but more importantly you have to have all the facts lined up to prove what you’ve written down. So a long time before you start writing your entry you have to have been working hard in the business to make outstanding and noteworthy improvements that will be recognised by the judges.”

So it’s simple then… do some great things in your business that are outstanding compared to the rest of the industry and then write them up as your entry. Job done.

Talking a little more with Mark and looking at the business and the people that they employ does give a broader perspective on

their winning streak. Listers is a dynamic company who actively embraces change. They are always looking to improve what they do and how they do it. They have embedded this culture across the business so that everyone has this state of mind so that everyone everywhere are always looking to make improvements.

“Our continued success in the G-Awards and in our business is down to the actions and hard work of the people we employ. Getting that right is our primary objective and it’s our people who have delivered such outstanding results for the company.”

“Please correct me if I’m wrong, but 20 nominations as finalists, over 10 consecutive years, 8 times winners, 3 times winners of the top Fabricator award and winner of the Derrek Bonnard Award… This must be an Industry record in itself?!” Says Mark.

“We look forward to the G-Awards as the highlight of the year and sincerely thank the organisers for running it. It’s a great event to enjoy whether you’re winners or not. All the finalists have to be outstanding to get nominated. We wish everyone the best on the night of the G-Awards that highlight the best of the best in glazing.” Mark Warren.

This year the G-Awards will be held on the 21st November, at the London Hilton Park Lane. More information can be found here: http://www.g-awards.co.uk/.

GLASS

GLASS & GLAZING

Architectural float glass is a world away from the days of blown or machine drawn plate glass. The float glass process produces a pristine finish which can be slightly reflective in appearance. Although this has very little impact in windows and general glazing, it can be distracting when the aim of the glass is to safely present the area behind, such as in shop windows, display cases, or areas which desire unobstructed views at night. Guardian Clarity is a magnetron sputtered, anti-reflective glass which helps to remove reflective distractions, producing a barrier which is clearer than glass.

“Glass provides clear protection from the environment outside, however in areas where clarity is paramount, such as shop fronts or restaurants with spectacular views, any distracting reflection impairs glasses potential,” says Luis Homet, Regional Sales Manager for Guardian

Western Europe. “Guardian Clarity solves this issue and helps create uninterrupted views in any application”.

Using the most advanced magnetron sputter coating technology, Guardian Clarity offers exceptional performance and durability. The sputter coating technique enables a light transmission of 97% and a reflection of less than 1%, compared to architectural float glass which offers a light transmission of 90% and a reflection of 8%. The carefully tailored anti-reflective coating has been designed so that any reflection caught in that 1% factor appears in a dark blue rather than the pink area of the spectrum, commonly found with other anti-reflective glass.

Being a magnetron sputter coated glass also means that Guardian Clarity is available in the optimum range of sizes, all the way up to Jumbo (3210x6000mm). Guardian Clarity can be supplied double or single sided, in both annealed and laminated forms, produced on Guardian UltraClear - low iron float glass. To aid in the processing of the glass, Guardian Clarity is also supplied with Guardian’s patented TPF (Temporary Protective Film), which protects the coating through processing helping to provide higher yields during fabrication.

GLASS & GLAZING

The Glass and Glazing Federation has released its Annual Report for 2013 showing a financially stable position against the tough economic conditions in the period.GGF President, Brian Baker of Glassolutions Saint Gobain stated, “2013 was a difficult year for the industry but the GGF Membership remained stable and continued to provide a high level of support for Members.”

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “The Federation’s Membership yet again stood up well to the trading pressures they faced in 2013. It is also particularly pleasing to see that the number of new Members joining the Federation increased from 23 in 2012 to 32 in 2013 (39%) and this year we are on course to show another recruitment increase on 2013. It is clear that our retention and acquisition strategies are working effectively as more and more companies realise the benefits of being part of the GGF.”

In the political arena during 2013, the GGF continued its dialogue with Government

on several campaigns such as Cut the VAT, Consumer Rights and Fire Safety. During the period, the Federation was also highly proactive as the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and CE marking became law with many companies in the industry having to comply.

The Annual Report reflects the Federation’s hard work on technical, political and legislative issues and shows outstanding online results from strong marketing and communications strategies, including a 24% increase (97,500) visitors, viewing the GGF website www.ggf.org.uk and a 15% increase in page views (457,500).

The Report also highlights how the Federation is improving Members’ benefits, and in particular the growing number of online benefits. In addition, the Report details the strong relationships the GGF is developing with Trading Standards and outlines the Federation’s progress in the Trading Standards Consumer Code of Approval Scheme. The Report also highlights the success of the GGF’s Conciliation Scheme and how it helped Members resolve disputes with consumers.

GGF Members’ Day was hailed a great success by Members and Staff alike as over 100 delegates attended and saw a packed conference programme of 16 presentations at the prestigious Glaziers’ Hall in London. The event was opened by the Right Honourable Simon Hughes MP who voiced full support for the Federation and its campaigns in particular; the GGF’s lobbying to reduce the VAT from a rate of 20% to a rate of 5% on home improvement work and on energy efficient windows. With the day off to a great start, delegates heard presentations from guest speakers Richard John of National Energy Foundation and from GK Strategy, Robin Grainger and Ellen Daniels who highlighted the GGF’s work across its core campaigns.

Brian Baker GGF President and Host for the day commented, “Members’ Day was

a great event from start to finish, with engaging speakers, topical presentations and healthy discussion. Thanks to all who attended and contributed to make Members’ Day a truly memorable occasion.”

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive added, “It was pleasing to see so many Members not only attending the event but also enjoying the networking opportunities.”

Following the guest speaker presentations, delegates heard three presentations from senior GGF managers on; the forthcoming GGF Energy Ratings Calculator, Consumers Issues and Health and Safety respectively. The Federation then held its AGM before lunch in the venue’s Banqueting Hall.

The afternoon session raced along with The Chairmen’s Forum section sparkling with some lively deliveries from six GGF Group Chairmen, who presented the work of their Groups with great enthusiasm and no shortage of wit.

Industry training, Triple Glazing and CE marking were topics covered in the Industry Issues section which was followed by a closing presentation on the benefits and services GGF Members receive.

Nigel Rees concluded, “Following the great success of this inaugural event, we aim to make Members’ Day a permanent fixture in the GGF calendar.”

In a few weeks, the GGF will be publishing a special edition of its Members’ magazine GLASSi which will include exclusive images and delegates’ feedback and links to all the presentations from Members’ Day 2014.

The GGF has written in response to Chancellor George Osborne’s request for views on areas to include in his Autumn Statement. In the letter, the GGF highlighted its concerns over three key issues affecting the glass and glazing industry including;

• The lack of Government led incentives for homeowners to install energy efficient windows following the ineffectiveness and slow uptake of the Green Deal and ECO (Energy Company’s Obligation).

• The inequality of VAT rates affecting energy efficient glazing. Most energy saving products enjoy a 5% rate of VAT yet energy efficient glass and glazing products have a 20% rate of VAT.

• The red tape that is slowing down growth in the conservatory sector since the Government transferred ownership of private sewers and lateral drains to water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. If a proposed conservatory or extension extends over or near a sewer then the house owner must apply to the relevant water company for a build-over agreement causing delays and costing companies money.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive wrote, “In advance of your Autumn Statement I would urge you to focus on introducing fiscal incentives to encourage householders to make their properties more energy efficient as well as introducing policies or schemes that will boost house building and home improvement.”

The letter also highlights that the GGF has consistently argued for a reduced rate of VAT from 20% to a rate of 5% on the price of energy efficient windows and doors, as well as reducing the current rate of 20% VAT on housing renovation and repairs to a rate of 5% VAT. The GGF detailed this campaign and included the

supporting research report conducted by Experian in the first quarter of 2014. The report “An Estimate of the effects of a reduction in the rate of VAT on housing renovation and repair work: 2015 to 2020”, highlights that a VAT rate reduction on housing renovation and repair, from 20% to 5%, could boost the UK economy by more than £15 billion from 2015 to 2020, a significant increase for the Exchequer. The Report also estimates that such a VAT reduction could also create more than 95,000 jobs and save 240,000 tonnes of CO2 from thousands of homes.

Nigel Rees expanded on this, “Energy efficient glazing products are currently subject to the 20% rate of VAT; however, the GGF believes that the list of ‘approved’ energy efficient products should be widened to include energy efficient windows and doors. This would increase retrofitting on properties and also create a level playing field for energy efficiency products installed in properties. Moreover, a single reduction in VAT on housing renovation and repair work could help the economy substantially as is clearly illustrated in the Experian Report.”

The GGF also believes that more should be done to incentivise householders interested in participating in energy efficiency schemes such as the Green Deal and Energy Company’s Obligation. The GGF is supportive of popular finance options such as the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund and would like to see further commitment from Government to incentivise consumers to install energy efficient products in their homes and offices.

Nigel Rees stated, “Windows have been proven to be highly popular with consumers in various energy efficiency trials and as such, should be further promoted in energy efficient schemes to encourage uptake. The Energy Saving Trust has estimated that as much as 23% of a home’s heat energy can be lost through inefficient windows. The installation of energy efficient windows is therefore essential in order

to reduce energy loss from homes as part of a ‘whole house approach’, thereby reducing carbon emissions and household bills and bringing people out of fuel poverty.”

The GGF also pointed out the importance of The Energy Company’s Obligation (ECO) to keep people out of fuel poverty and emphasized that energy efficient homes are not merely limited to carbon and cost savings, but also can improve people’s general lifestyles and help prevent illnesses caused as a result of poorly insulated homes. The latter point, supports the government’s broader aims to keep people out of hospitals and ease the burden on the NHS budget during winter months.

In the letter, the GGF supports the Government efforts to stimulate growth of the economy through driving the manufacturing and construction industries, however, the GGF did express its concern over red tape. It was outlined to the Chancellor that GGF members estimate that about 80% of every normal home extension or conservatory addition will go over or near what was formerly a private sewer and will therefore need the consent of the relevant sewerage undertaker to extend their property. Despite assurances from the water companies that guidance for consumers would be issued, there has been slow movement on this and there is still no guidance in place three years after the transfer took place. The Chancellor was informed that the GGF is working with the water companies to develop this guidance, but Nigel Rees emphasised, “This process needs to be accelerated in order to make sure consumers have the freedom to extend their houses and generate more business for local construction companies.”

The GGF will now wait until late November/early December to see if Chancellor Osborne will address these issues in his 2014 Autumn Statement.

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has written to every Member of Parliament who represents a GGF Member in their constituency, to open dialogue and create awareness of the GGF’s campaigns ahead of the political parties’ manifestos for next year’s General Election.In the letters, the GGF underlined its position as the leading authority and voice of the industry and highlighted the five main campaigns it is currently working on including;

• Supporting the case for a reduced rate of VAT on energy efficient products and on home improvement, repair and maintenance work and on energy efficient windows

• Working with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to help promote and improve energy efficiency schemes such as the Green Deal and Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

• Working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to ensure that the Consumer Bill of Rights works in the best interests of consumers and businesses

• Making the case for an integrated approach to fire safety, where fire safety products are tested to the correct specification and installed and enforced correctly and in particular fire resistant glazing systems

• Addressing the impact of the change of ownership of private sewers to businesses and consumers wishing to build conservatories or extensions on their properties

Nigel Rees, Group Chief Executive commented, “It is important to raise the profile of our key campaigns at this time. We have emphasized to hundreds of MPs that the issues that concern us not only affect the businesses operating in their constituency and across the UK, but also the householders who benefit from more energy efficient homes and appropriate regulations and enforcement.”

GQA

GLASS & GLAZING

Daniel Aspden of Regency Glass was recently presented with his GQA certificate after achieving the GQA Level 3 Glass Related Distribution and Warehousing qualification with North Lancs Training Group.Daniel, who works in the despatch department at the Leigh based company, is the first candidate to achieve this qualification via the NLTG advanced apprenticeship scheme. He has completed GQA qualifications at Level 2 and 3 in Glass Processing previously and was keen to add the Glass Warehousing qualification to his CV when it became available.

Daniel said “I am proud to be the first to achieve this via NLTG and am always looking to improve my skills; I know that the GQA qualifications are widely recognised and was recently surprised to find that on a 12 month working visit to Australia my Glass Processing certificate got me a job over there”.

Regency Glass has been consistently committed to the GQA suite of qualifications and NLTG apprenticeships of which 40 members of

staff have now completed. Production Director Wayne Fitzmartin said “since we began with the apprenticeship scheme around 12 years ago we have made it a policy to offer it to all staff and include this in the initial training plan for new staff; the apprenticeships have made a difference, staff are motivated and have a better depth of knowledge of health and safety and waste management, as well as understanding the importance of team work. During this period we have worked closely with NLTG and in particular Paul Fairhurst and Jennifer Wray and would like to thank them for their support and commitment.”

Regency Glass have recently nominated a further 19 candidates for the apprenticeship scheme.

It was a family affair for Prospect Windows of Leek Staffordshire when they looked at personal development and meeting the new industry requirements for members of competent person schemes. Geoff Hodkinson, the business owner, and his three sons, John, Shaun and Ryan all registered on the GQA NVQ level 2 Fenestration Installation and Glass Related Operations Technical Certificate in 2013 and, working with GQA approved centre PM Training, achieved their qualifications in September of this year.

Simon Smith, Assessor for PM Training said: “From a personal point of view it’s great to see companies like Prospect Windows welcome the changes within the industry and take the right steps to up-skill staff and recognise their competence levels. It was evident from the offset that John was very proactive and wanted to set the wheels in motion for all staff members to

be assessed,” with Simon continuing “this approach was very refreshing and made the whole process a pleasure”.

Geoff did however have a few reservations on the policing of the individuals who had achieved the MTC or relevant qualifications and said “I hope that those who don’t comply get frowned upon in the industry, because the industry has been crying out for something like this for a long time and it would be unfair on those who have committed to it.” Geoff also said “we could have gone down the MTC route, but I felt that the qualification was more sought after and if you are going to do something then do it properly and get qualified”

Prospect Windows were very impressed with the way PM Training handled the whole process, from the original sign up, through assessment and eventually certification. Geoff has already put himself at the top of the list to register on the GQA Surveying qualification and is hopeful of starting early in 2015. Simon said: “How Geoff has committed himself in the past, it is going to be a pleasure to work with Prospect Windows in the future”.

GM Fundraising is delighted to announce the launch of its first ever Christmas cards, designed by the children of Hope House Children’s Hospices, in order to raise funds directly for them.“The festive season will soon be upon us and for those traditional ones amongst us, who still like to give Christmas cards, it is satisfying to know that you are also doing your bit for charity,” explains Gary Morton, Founder of GM Fundraising. ‘“We have worked directly with the children at Hope House in order to create two very special, unique designs and we hope everyone will support us in

our mission to sell as many as possible across the industry and further afield. Every penny raised from every pack sale will go directly to Hope House, so rest assured - whatever you spend with us, they get.”

“Each pack contains 20 cards; 10 each of the two designs and are on sale for £20 a pack. Packs can be purchased directly from the GM Fundraising website www.gmfundraising.co.uk/cards or from any of the GM Fundraising team. We are also able to personalise these cards, with a special message or company logo as required, for just an additional £20 charge when ordering 60 or more.”

“At GM Fundraising, we are always exploring new initiatives and

opportunities to raise funds and believe the GM Fundraising Christmas card to be a great example of that. Christmas is a time for giving and what better thing to do than give money to a very worthy cause at such a special time of year. As always, we thank everyone for their continued and tireless support.”

For more information, visit the GM Fundraising website at www.gmfundraising.co.uk.

It isn’t every day someone has the opportunity to mark two great causes in one event but that is what a team of window industry leaders did with the GM Fundraising Poppy Ride.“It really was an unforgettable experience,” said Quickslide Chairman Adrian Barraclough, who made the incredible journey along with 20 other cycle riders and support crew. “Not only riding as a part of GM Fundraising but concluding the journey at such an evocative memorial site was really something else.”

The group pedaled all the way from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to the memorial among the battlefields of

the Somme – scene of some of the bloodiest battles in military history – to mark the Centenary of the beginning of The Great War. Along the way, they also stopped at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, then over the Channel and on to a 55-mile loop around the battlefields of the Somme including observing two minutes silence at the Arras Memorial.

GM Fundraising has now raised more than £1.2 million for children’s charities and The Poppy Ride was the group’s first expedition in support of another good cause, with all funds raised going to the Royal British Legion.

Quickslide is best-known for its acclaimed sliding sash windows, and the company has been instrumental in bringing this former niche product into the mainstream of the retrofit and new-

build markets, but it also manufactures a wide range of other styles of windows and doors for trade, commercial and domestic customers.

It’s a colourful world out there – and that applies to the PVCu industry which for so long was stuck in the white or woodgrain doldrums.West-Yorkshire based Kolorseal was in the forefront of the move towards colour and is still leading the way in colour – which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the window and conservatory market.

This demand for colour products is now spreading to the fascia and soffit industry.

Debbie Hendry, managing director at Kolorseal commented, “We have seen a huge growth in colour year on year, especially in the past couple of years. Currently, the focus is very much on conservatories, rooflines and composite doors.

“But we are also seeing a substantial increase in demand for coloured foiled products and that in turn, is fuelling rising demand for coloured ancillary products, such as trims, rooflines, trickle vents, conservatory roofs and rainwater goods.

“Because we are specialists within the colour coating

industry, we can match any colour,” Debbie continued.

“We can offer any RAL or BS colour and can also provide a colour matching service for any other colours. And our colour coatings come with a10 year guarantee.”

From its purpose-built 12,500 square foot factory in West Yorkshire, Kolorseal operates three spray booths, supplying quality coloured products nationwide.

Kolorseal can colour your own frames, doors, composite doors, roofs, rooflines –or alternatively provide you with the full package – supply,

colour and deliver.

This is something many of the company’s customers opt for, because in a competitive market, it offers them the opportunity to provide bespoke, unique products to customers – with the added attraction of boosting profit margins by getting away from standard industry colours.

Kolorseal’s one-stop trade centre offers a huge good value product range, and nationwide delivery.

Yorkshire based provider of PVCu, Glass & Metal Colour Coating, Kolorseal, recently celebrated their ten year anniversary.Kolorseal has seen growth year on year and continually reinvests to further develop productivity. The company’s growth stems from the strong relationships they have built in the last ten years, both within the company and, importantly with customers. Kolorseal pride themselves on customer service, keeping their customers organised, as well as happy.

Debbie Hendry, Managing Director at Kolorseal, said:

“We provide a standard seven day turn-round on all our coated products, and will accommodate any ‘urgent’ jobs wherever possible. We care a great deal about our customers and I like to think they appreciate the services we offer. We aim to be a vital and trusted supplier to all of our customers.”

Kolorseal was one of the original pioneers, in the move towards colour coating and is still leading the way in this sector, which is one of the fastest growing sectors of the window and conservatory market as demand for colour products continue to grow, as consumers seek more individuality for their homes.

Kolorseal can colour frames, doors, composite

doors, roofs, rooflines –or alternatively provide you with the full package – supply, colour and deliver.

The key is in the name: Kolorseal. The UK’s leading specialist provider of PVCu, glass and metal colour coating has been in the business for 10 years and its experience makes a difference; as does its attitude towards quality and outstanding customer service, which reflects in everything the company does. Now with ISO 9001 accreditation, the company also won ‘Supplier of the

Year’ award from Quickslide for 2013.

MD Debbie Hendry has always set high standards and she believes that is one of the things that sets Kolorseal apart.

“We work with our customers, holding their hands throughout,” she says. “We offer a seven day turnaround so that fabricators don’t have any delays or disruptions to their schedules.”

“Our trade counter within the factory holds substantial stocks of ancillary items and free expert advice from the trained and experienced team is always available.”

When it comes to colour, what everyone wants is for

it to last. Kolorseal ‘s colour coating solution ensures this because it actually forms a molecular bond with the surface of the PVCu, so it effectively becomes part of the material’s structure, rather than just adhering to its surface.

A 10 year guarantee comes with this - as it does on all foiled products- but Kolorseal is confident that it will endure far longer than that.

“And we are aiming to increase that to 15 years,” says Debbie.

Whether it is doors and windows, conservatories, fascias, soffits, trims, cladding, rooflines, roof vents – Kolorseal offers the

standard RAL range and BS colours, but can also match any other system.

“The Farrow & Ball and heritage shades are very popular ,” Debbie says, “and of course we can colour match to these to suit this trend,” she explains. “But the importance thing is that people now have the choice, whether they favour classic or more contemporary.”

With superior quality, fast and efficient service, nationwide deliveries, competitive prices - and years of experience, Kolorseal clearly has a great deal to offer.

As Edgetech UK, a Quanex Company, adds four new products for IGU manufacturers, window fabricators and installers, a new role is created to support customers. The position of Commercial Supply Chain Manager has been filled by David Relph who comes with over 10 years of experience in operations and logistics. David will use his previous experience in warehouse and project management

to develop and implement strategies that continue to improve processes in Edgetech’s Coventry-based manufacturing and distribution centre.

“I’ve joined Edgetech at an exciting time for the business as it launches Super Spacer Alpha, TruFit, TruShield and TruSieve,” comments David. “The success of TruPlas rigid warm edge spacer bar has already grown our customer base significantly and the recent launch of TruPlas SDL has seen us handling more complex orders.

“I’m looking forward to liaising with customers to ensure we keep exceeding their expectations on service as we continue to grow the product range.”

The team at Padiham Glass Ltd has grown substantially over the last few months but the company says that the restructuring of the business coupled with the surge in orders in recent weeks means there are still more roles to fill.Their most recent appointment is highly qualified, brings a wealth of knowledge and over 20 years of experience to Padiham Glass Ltd. Carole Revilles joins as the company’s new Health and Safety Administrator and two weeks in has already started making her mark.

“Everyone has been so friendly”, said Carole. “I’ve had to ask a lot of questions to find out how the company’s current Health and Safety strategies are working but everyone has been really eager to help and point me in the right direction to get to the information I need, both on the

shopfloor and in the main offices. Prior to my interview at Padiham Glass I did some research and decided that I’d made the right decision to move on and try something new,” said Carole. “I could tell they were a progressive company eager to make improvements and I’m keen to start helping them move forward.”

Carole’s many years of experience overseeing 430 employees at a Boots the Chemist warehouse in Heywood, Rochdale made her a prime candidate for Padiham Glass Ltd as she already

understands the processes involved in staff training and inductions, risk assessments, fire safety procedures and accident investigation protocols.

“I think the biggest challenge will be getting to grips with the Health and Safety issues that are specific to the glass industry,” said Carole, “but it’s a much smaller team of staff than what I was used to at Boots so I’m confident I can really focus on improving the existing plans.”

Carole, who lives in Rochdale, has been married to husband Michael for 24 years and has two daughters (Zoe, 25 & Rebecca, 22) and 2 pugs, Harper and Wrinkles.
