Because of the late arrival of spring this year many of us have only just got our cars out. Hopefully, fall will be late to arrive giving us more time to enjoy our cars. A few weeks ago I added one more to my collection… a 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe.

Work on my 1937 Ford truck will again fall victim to yard work, golf and enjoying the events planned for the VLNAACF. I have found time to drive both cars to Cars & Coffee and Greg’s garage tour plus trips to the Fountain-head Museum. Now it is time to get them cleaned and polished for the Carlson Car Show on June 3 & 4

th. With

the full schedule of events the club has planned, hopefully we will all find time to enjoy our cars this summer.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Jeff Creamer, our newest Board member. Jeff will be fill-ing the remainder of Bob Miller’s term. Thanks again Jeff for stepping up and volunteering and I look forward to working with you.

SUNSHINE REPORT:

Tracy sent out one card on behalf of the club in April: • To Doris Casey, who fell while on a trip to Anchorage and

broke her ankle. Also, Tracy says she hopes to start going through Ray’s garage and storage and would like help in sorting out and finding a home for things that don’t belong to Rochelle’s Mustang, which Ray was working on. Tracy McLeod is the Sunshine Contact. Please send her an e-mail if you know of a club member who could use a little "sunshine". e-mail: [email protected] . For a postal mail address contact Tracy or a Board member.

2017 Adventure Before Dementia Tour

Sat., July 8 thru Wed., July 12 Wiseman, Galbraith Lake (or on to Prudhoe Bay if you wish)

& Manley Hot Springs By Scott Grundy, Cat Herder Jr.

For years, our club members, James “Clutch” and Lorna Lounsbury have encouraged me to organize this tour to historic Wiseman on the Dalton. Wiseman is the farthest north gold discovery in the U.S. and Clutch’s great grandfather was a pioneer miner there. All historic buildings in Wiseman will be available for us to tour. Plus, you’ll see the incredible “White Man’s Totem” - one of the wonders of the world! And, yes, the Lounsburys still have housing rental space available in Wiseman! What’s cool about this tour is that you can participate in any segment you wish. Limit your involvement with us only to the Hilltop Restaurant for breakfast, view the fantastic Yukon River bridge, join our celebration crossing the Arctic Circle, cross the Continental Di-vide in the beautiful Brooks Range, and you even have the opportuni-ty to continue on to dip your toes in the Arctic ocean! Or just join our group to tour the quaint village of Manley Hot Springs on July 11 & 12. The Dalton Highway is paved at least a third of the way to the Brooks Range. The Elliott Highway west of the Dalton is mostly gravel. This is an old car tour but drive anything you want. Several are driving their camping rigs. Just join us for the fun & camaraderie! Contact me for a detailed itinerary and housing list at [email protected] or 907-457-3526.

JOINT MEET The Joint Meet with Antique Auto Mush-ers of Alaska (Anchorage AACA Region) will be July 28th and 29th. We will kick the event off at 6:00 PM at the Chena River State Recreation Site at 3530 Geraghty Ave with a pot-luck picnic. As the hosts of the Joint Meet, our club will provide the meat and our members will provide the side dishes for the meal. The Anchorage Club will provide the desserts. Willy has arranged a discounted rate for the Antique Auto Mushers at the Wedgewood Resort for lodging. Saturday morning at 9:30 am we will hold Car Games at the old K-Mart building parking lot. At noon, we will gather once again for lunch, bringing whatever is left over from our picnic Fri-day night and whatever else members want to provide. The loca-tion for this is still in the works. At 1:30 we will have a Tour, visit-ing some interesting locations within the Fairbanks area. Satur-day evening, at 6pm, we will hold an Awards Banquet. That loca-tion will also be announced at the next meeting.

We could use some help with the Car Games and the set up of the picnics. Please contact Willy at 388-8252 or Wilma at 388-7766 if you can help. W i l m a

At the request of the North Pole Lions Club, through club mem-ber Mike Welch, the Board approved allow-ing display of the ‘92 Corvette in a booth at the Carlson Car Show and for the Lions to sell tickets for their raffle in support of Trooper Gabe Rich and Trooper Scott Johnson Memorial Park and the Fallen Heroes Memorial in North Pole.

The raffle is in coordination with the Alaska Peace Officer Association, Interior Fire Chiefs, Cities of North Pole and Fairbanks, and the Borough, and is chaired by North Pole Police Chief Steven Du-tra.

The City of North Pole dedicated the Memorial Park to honor borough residents who lost their lives while performing their official duties serving their country, state, or munici-pality. The effort started after the murder of Troopers Rich and Johnson, and then grew to recognize borough residents employed in the public sector who lost their lives while serving their community.

The fund raiser will conclude in Septem-ber. 2500 tickets will be sold at $50 each. Prizes include the restored ‘92 Corvette, $5,000 in cash, and $3,700 in non-cash prizes.

Club member Mike Welch donated the ‘92 Corvette which is the grand prize.

Mileage Award Program (MAP) Purpose: The Mileage Award Program has been established to recog-nize AACA members who drive an AACA-approved vehicle throughout the calendar year. Participation is voluntary and tracking mileage is the owner’s responsibility; although subject to review. It is intended that all activity and mileage will be governed by the vehicle’s owner. Any time a vehicle is driven - anywhere for any reason - the mileage counts towards the award level. Miles where the vehicle is towed (emergency or non-emergency) do not count towards the total driving miles. Procedure: The vehicle owner must register each vehicle that they would like to include in the MAP by filling out a f o r m a v a i l a b l e f r o m National Headquarters and mailing a $25.00 check payable to AACA. Once the application is received at national the vehicle badge will be mailed to the owner. When the vehicle is driven 2,000 miles it is eligible for the first MAP award. The badge has a section where the number of miles is placed; the section is upgraded at each level.: 1st Award - 2,000 mile 2nd Award - 5,000 mile Subsequent Award(s) - at each 5,000 mile increment After you achieve your first 2,000 miles, a record keeping form is mailed to Sherm Carey at the address listed. Once Mr. Carey approves your request the award(s) will be mailed to you from National Head-quarters. All mileage is retroactive to January 1, current year For additional questions, please contact Sherm Carey [email protected]

Membership Lars Anderson Vice President Library & Research Center

Membership numbers for 2016 are

consistent with what we've experienced over the past six years. That's good, considering a larger portion of our membership is aging and leaving us each year. That means we're getting more new members than in the past, which is what the club is all about - we're a membership organization. But we are still the best kept secret in the car hobby. Ask the owner of an old original car at a local show if he knows who we are. You'll be amazed at how many don't know us or maybe they've seen AACA but can't explain what we are. EXPOSURE is the name of our game plan. Last year the '57 Chevy cut out advertising piece was developed and introduced to you at this meet-ing. The idea was to place these on vehicles that would fit in our club. What a great effort that pro-duced. Over 14,000 of them were requested by our regions. This year we're going one step further by producing a '65 Mustang, which will have space on the backside for regions to put in their infor-mation. Other efforts to expose the club and get new members include the increased visibility of our name at the Hershey swap meet. Many of the attendees there know it only as "Hershey," una-ware of Antique Automobile Club of America. New last year was the military sponsorship program. Free first year membership is available to all veter-ans who express an interest in old cars. Also free are membership applications given to the regions. Did you know that? Does your region make good use of them? It's important that re-gions use these as they result in 68% of the appli-cants joining us the following year. Please take advantage of the many oppor-tunities you have for exposing our club, and make use of the promotions national headquarters pro-vides for you. Thank you for your unending efforts to bring the enjoyment of AACA to others. You, along with 59,856 others, are the most powerful source we have for getting the job done.

MODEL T DRIVING SCHOOL

As we reported last month, efforts are afoot (we chose that word carefully) to launch a Model T Driving School as a joint effort between the Club and the Fountainhead Museum. Those working on the project hope to do at least one session yet this sum-mer. At the right, Board Member Melinda Harris found the important horn control on the Model T which has been donated as the training vehicle.

You are a candidate for training if you can’t identify the controls on the floor of the Model T. You are a candidate to become a trainer, if you can identify them and use them smoothly. Hint: The right pedal is the brake, and none is the ac-celerator...

Howling Dog Motorcycle Show Members Ralph Glasgow and Melinda Harris hosted their an-nual Motorcycle Show at the Howling Dog on Saturday, May 20th. Several club members attended.

Jay Lawless won Best Race Bike with his original, one owner ‘58 Harley - Davidson factory bike Jim Boswood won Best Antique with his ‘57

Cushman

Maybe I’m biased, but I have observed that events that are promot-ed well in advance in the newsletter, and where event details are told in membership meetings ahead of the event, are better attended. One of the responsibilities of the PPR (primary person responsible) for a club event is to provide publicity. I usually don’t need much information - just the facts as to time, place, what to expect, what to bring, etc. and I can usually dig up a photo and put together a promo article.

Our summer season is now in full swing. Please take photos (no excuses now that everyone seems to have a cell phone with a camera), and send me the good ones. If you are the event chair or PPR, please send me an article about the event. I can’t make it to every club event, so I need to depend on you for photos and words sometimes.
