David Braun, Nassau Bay's Mayor Pro Tem and a longtime advocate for manned space flight and a force behind the region’s advocacy for the space program passed away Saturday, February 21, 2015, after a three-year battle with liver cancer.

A resident of Nassau Bay since 1986, David served as a Nassau Bay City Councilmember from 2002 through 2010. He left office because of term limits, but was re-elected in 2011 and was named Mayor Pro Tem. David served as the Aerospace Marketing Manager for the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership.

He was very active in the community, volunteering with the Nauticat Swim Team and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. He volunteered much of his time with various city and school district committees. Clear Creek Education Foundation named him the 2013 Citizen of the Year.

Even before he joined City Council, David had been involved in the city. He was instrumental in raising the funds and helping build the playground at Lake Nassau Park among his many other accomplishments.

He will be greatly missed by our entire community.

The Nassau Bay Fire Marshal's Office and the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department want to remind you to check and change the batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarms when you reset your clocks on Sunday, March 8th.

A working alarm could give you and your family those few extra seconds to get out of your house in case of a fire.

BY THE NUMBERS

CCEF ANNUAL CLEAN UPUnder cloudy, rain-threatened skies and high tide conditions several Nassau Bay volunteers along with an estimated 30 CCEF volunteers completed a near thorough cleaning of the shores of the Nassau Bay peninsula and Cow Bayou on Saturday morning, Feb. 21. It was the 18th annual event and the 16th working with CCEF. Great thanks is owed to Nassau Bay volunteers: Gail Barnett, Joseph Barnett, Jack Callahan, Michie Caldwell, Roscoe Lee, Bill Quinn, Emily Thomas, Paul Thomas, David Salva, Reza Kompany, Mark Gerscheske, and Jim Stoa.

Together in just under four hours volunteers picked up an estimated 18.5 tons of plastic bottles, styrofoam, tires, boat cushions, chairs, many other items. Thanks again for all those that came out and made a difference in our city and special thanks to Mike Stone and all the CCEF volunteers that joined us in making that difference.

Pump Don't Dump: Keep Our Bay Fishable & Swimmable

Due to continued complaints and reports of illegal boat sewage discharges from those in the boating community, we want to remind you to Pump Don't Dump to keep our bay fishable and swimmable.

Sewage discharged from boats degrades water quality by introducing disease-causing bacteria into the environment and depressing oxygen levels as the sewage decays. This can result in fish kills and may make the water unsuitable for swimming and recreational use. It is illegal to discharge both treated and untreated sewage into Clear Lake and illegal to discharge untreated waste into Galveston Bay. In order to properly dispose of boater waste, you must use an approved pump-out device, station, or service.

For more information and to locate pump-out facilities, please visit www.galvbay.org/boaterwaste or contact Charlene Bohanon at [email protected]

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

TREE TIPS from Nassau Bay Garden Club

Help save our Nassau Bay trees. Mulch Volcanoes are exploding all over Nassau Bay!

Too much of a good thing can be harmful. When mulch is piled against a tree trunk it becomes a Mulch Volcano. Excessive mulch eventually penetrates the bark and suffocates the cells of layers of tissue that transfer food up and down the tree. Once the food supply is compromised, the roots will gradually die. Secondary problems are insects, borers, fungi, bacteria, and even rodents all of which enter in through the mulch and eat their way through the decaying bark into the tree, thus taking advantage of the tree in this stressed condition.

So what do you do if you realize that you (Gasp!) have Mulch Volcanoes in your yard? Don't panic, but act soon! It is a simple process using a shovel, trowel or another tool. Carefully get the mulch away from the trunk, trying hard not to damage the trunk. Use a water hose if needed to blast away any chunks of mulch clinging to the bark.

If it is a large tree and has flares (roots above the soil), then keep the mulch away from the trunk and the flares. If you have a young tree, use your trowel to make a well with the mulch so that it dips low and doesn't touch the trunk but mounds slightly around the outer edge.

Taking these simple steps will allow our beautiful, mighty trees to continue to be majestic and will enable all our younger trees to one day become the be the talk of Nassau Bay!

Houston Methodist St. John Hospital’s Volunteer Program is looking to expand in size and areas of responsibility in the coming year. In order to accomplish these goals, the volunteers are currently looking for strong, positive, and caring individuals to join our team. We are a close knit group that has been a part of the foundation of this hospital for over thirty years. We currently provide service in a variety of areas that include the information desk, gift shop, and clerical departments. We are also in patient rooms and waiting areas, where we provide interaction and support to our patients and their families.

If you know of anyone that is looking to be part of a rewarding and worthwhile experience, please let us know. The Volunteer Coordinator, Joshua Garza, can be reached at [email protected] or at 281-523-2645. We look forward to hearing from you.
