erba mate tea is steeped rom the South American subtrop-ical tree called yerba mate, which is a species o holly.Te Guaran people and also some up communities in

southern Brazil and Paraguay were the frst to cultivate and useit. Consumed as a beverage, yerba mate is also used in traditionalmedicine to treat various health problems.

Te tea contains a lengthy list o vitamins, minerals and antioxi-dants, including B vitamins and vitamin C; manganese, potassiumand zinc; and the avorable plant compounds quercetin, theobro-mine and theophylline.

According to the FIDAY article, 6 Health Benefts o YerbaMate ea, some health benefts o yerba mate are that it is high

in antioxidants (it has about 90% more antioxidants than greentea), it increases ability to concentrate and it improves mentalenergy. Yerba mate drinkers say that it does not cause the annoy-ing side eects associated with drinking caeinated beverages likeheadaches, stomachaches and jitters. It is known to boost physicalstamina and regular usage also helps keep lactic acid rom build-ing up in your muscles so you can lessen post-workout discomortand decrease your recovery time.

Yerba mate helps digestion by encouraging increased produc-tion o bile and other gastric acids. Combining yerba mate with ahealthy diet and regular exercise can help increase your metabo-lism to burn more calories, and can help you eat less by suppressingyour appetite a little bit. It also encourages cardiovascular health.Te antioxidants and amino acids present in yerba mate help atand cholesterol move through your bloodstream so that they dontcollect on artery walls. In addition, yerba mate also helps hinderarteriosclerosis (hardening o the arteries) and prevents bloodclots that may induce heart attack or stroke.

A recent study in the Journal o the American College o Nutri-tion indicates that yerba mate minimizes your risk o type 2 diabe-tes. ype 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that aects the way

your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your bodys main soo uel, states the Mayo Clinic Web site. Granted, there is noor type 2 diabetes, but it can be managed and even averted exercise, eating well and sustaining a healthy weight.

Yerba mate can also oer health benefts or persons with diabetes. According to Dr. David Lius article, Yerba Mate ea FDiabetes Mellitus ype 2, drinking the tea combined with ntional counseling decreased the levels o LDL-c, non-high-delipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and triglycerides. All reducwere striking. Subjects in this group decreased intakes o tot(14%), cholesterol (28%), and saturated (23.8%) and monounrated (28.0%) atty acids, and increased fber intake by 35%.

Te researchers concluded in the study that Mate tea consution improved the glycemic control and lipid profle o 2(diabetes mellitus type 2) subjects, and mate tea consumpcombined with nutritional intervention was highly eectivdecreasing serum lipid parameters o pre-diabetes individwhich may reduce their risk o developing coronary disease.

Yerba mate has many benefts or people who want to natumaintain a healthy liestyle or prevent major health issues plague our current Western society, especially those people are overweight or who have heart problems or type 2 diabete

Auriculotherapy, also called auricular therapy, ear acupunc-ture or auriculoacupuncture, is a treatment based on theidea that the ear is a microsystem o the entire body repre-

sented on the auricle, the outer portion o the ear. Physical andemotional conditions are treated by stimulation o the surace othe ear. It is based upon the ancient Chinese practice o acupunc-ture. All systems o acupuncture began with the original Chinesemedical text, Te Yellow Emperors Classic o Internal Medicine, compiled in 500 B.C. All six yang meridians (pathways in thebody along which vital energy ows) are directly connected to theauricle, while the six yin meridians are indirectly connected.

Te correspondence o specifc parts o the body to specifcparts o the ear was developed by mapping o the ear in an orderly, anatomical arrangement o points, resembling an upside downetus in utero. Te head areas are represented toward the bottom othe ear, the eet toward the top and the body in between. Tis wasfrst developed in modern France in 1957 by neurologist Dr. PaulNogier using an oshoot o phrenology, a psychological theory oranalytical method based on the belie that certain mental acul-ties and character traits are indicated by the confgurations o theskull. What is most ascinating is the act that there are no directnerve connections between the ear and the rest o the body. Tenerves rom the ear connect to reex centers in the brain, whichsend neurological reex messages to the spinal cord and then tonerves connecting to the corresponding part o the body.

Te conditions that auriculotherapy can help are endless. It isused or pain, weight loss, smoking cessation, acute and chronicconditions, addictions, emotional issues, stress, low sex drive, allergies, insomnia, high blood pressure, memory loss, diabetesand headaches, just to name a ew.

Auriculotherapy can be administered in several ways. Varioustypes o specialized acupuncture needles can be used, althoughit can be done needle-ree. Needle-ree methods include use o

electrical or laser stimulation, specialized pressure pellets mrom gold, silver, steel or herbal seeds, as well as magnets, manual pressure done with fnger tips. In my practice I alsothe points o gemstone wands so you get the beneft o aurictherapy and crystal/stone therapy at the same time. A session tabout 20 to 30 minutes.

Current technology enables modern auricular practitione

locate points with amazing precision by using an electrical plocator. Te device is used to detect increased electrical conductivity, which is ound at an electrically active point.increase in electrical conductivity correlates exactly with a proin the corresponding part o the body. Te most sophisticinstruments also detect polarity o active points, which tells wtype o treatment is needed. Tis instrument can provide electacupuncture point stimulation. Most people dont eel anythinall as the electrical micro-current is so minimal in charge, bew people notice a mild electrical sensation or tingling eeEach reex point is treated rom ten to 120 seconds.

Non-needle auriculotherapy is very useul or clients who a ear o needles. Auricular therapy acupressure herbal seedmetal pellets, which are mounted on a Band-Aid type matare used and provide outstanding eects. I use the metal pewith my clients especially those who have anxiety or depres to give them continual auricular therapy benefts in betwour ormal sessions.

Frequency o treatment is individually determined. Tere set number o treatments or any health condition treated auriculotherapy. It depends on what is being treated. I o

The word natural conjures up eelings o goodness andwholesomeness. Te packaging o these products may beappealing with pictures o resh ood and happy pets, but

what does natural mean when used on the label o your dog orcats ood? Do the natural ingredients mean the ood is a good andwholesome choice or your pet? Te name may imply that what isinside is natural and the most nutritious choice or your dog or cat,but the answer is not so simple.

Many people are surprised to learn there is no standard def-nition or the term natural or regulations or using it to name

or describe a product. Te Association o American Feed ControlOcials (AAFCO) has strict defnitions or other terms and ingre-dients used in pet oods. Te term organic, or example, may onlybe used i the ingredient has been raised, harvested and processedunder strict guidelines o an organic certifcation organization.Very ew complete oods meet the standards or organic certifca-tion under the guidelines o the USDA, Oregon ilth or OrganicCrop Improvement Association. Some pet oods, however, maycontain individual ingredients that may be listed as organic.

For our purposes, lets defne natural as a substance that natu-rally occurs in nature or has been derived rom another substancethat is naturally occurring. A species appropriate diet or yourdog or cat living in the wild would include prey animals, such asrabbits, squirrels and mice. We dont encourage our amily pets toprovide or themselves by hunting, but we can provide a commer-cially prepared raw diet. Tese oods are balanced diets with neces-sary nutritional components naturally ound in the resh meats, organs, bones, ruits and vegetables used. A good and wholesomeood choice doesnt get more natural than this!

Many people may choose to eed the more processed cannedoods or dry kibble oods. We need to consider the ingredients inthese choices as well. Te most important ingredient in a dog or

cat ood is the meat protein. When looking at the meat listed iingredients, be sure to note that it is listed by the specifc aniLook or duck or duck meal; this means the ood containmuscle meat o ducks. An ingredient listed as meat, meat mor by-products has no assurance that the proteins used anutritious source o protein or your pet.

Corn, wheat and soy, or ingredients derived rom them corn gluten meal or wheat middlings), have been known to callergic responses and digestive concerns in some dogs and Ingredients such as these, while being a natural product, are n

natural part o a carnivores diet and should be avoided.Other ingredients to note are the vitamins used in your

ood. A list o vitamins identifed by their very long names caconusing and leave the consumer wondering i they are sounaturally or synthetic versions. Oen natural oods will list r

vegetables and other botanicals, which are the sources or the nrally occurring vitamins required. Tis may be a more desirway to add vitamins, but there is some controversy whethenutrition is lost in the cooking and processing o the ood. Stions to this dilemma include supplementing with less-proceoods or whole ood supplements.

Sorting through the choices is important or the health o dog or cat. Your holistic veterinarian is the best source o inortion to help you make the best diet choices or your compaanimal. Small pet supply stores that specialize in quality naoods and supplements should be able to guide you throughdecision-making process as well.

careul to not wash or rub o the pellets, treatment is continualor several weeks. Some conditions require multiple treatmentsspread over time. Electrical stimulation treatments may be donemore requently.

Te range o responses to this therapy varies. It is common that aclient suering rom severe pain will notice mild to marked reduc-tion o pain aer or even during the frst session. Tis reduction

in their pain experience can actually improve or the next severalhours to weeks aer treatment. Like any treatment, its eectivenessdepends on the severity and/or duration o the condition treated, extent o damage, etc. Its important to understand that the goalo auriculotherapy is to detect energy imbalances in your body and jumpstart normal unction. Electrical stimulation needs tobe avoided in women who are pregnant and or anyone who has apacemaker. Soreness on the ear points can sometimes continue ora while aer the treatment or the ear can become slightly inamed. Some clients eel drowsy aer a treatment, which comes romthe release o endorphins. A healing crisis can also occur wherethe symptoms can get worse beore they are released and healingbegins. As with any healing modality, pick a practitioner who hasthe training and skill needed or optimum results.

As 2012 comes to an end, and with 2013 soon to be upon us,society is still struggling with the perceptions, other thanthe reality when it comes to resistance training. Resistance

training (reerred rom here on as weight training) can be datedback to Greece as early as the 2nd century, when it consisted oliing stones and logs. Dumbbells and barbells came around inthe 19th century, and weight machines have been around sincethe 1960s. As you can see, this is no modern day ad, and it hascertainly stood the test o time.

Scientifc research has been conducted over the last couple odecades to test the ecacy and beneft o weight training and thehuman body. Countless research studies over the years have cometo show the many benefts o weight training, as well as showinghow it is one o the most benefcial orms o activity that we cando, and that we should all be doing it.

With all the benefts weight training provides, the negative

connotations associated with weight training still hold peopleback rom even trying to incorporate it into their lives. Te obesityepidemic in America is still escalating out o control, type 2diabetes is running rampant, and injury due to aulty movementpatterns and weak muscles is a common theme.

How can we fx these problems? What needs to be present inour physical activity plan?

Te answer is simple: We need to lif more weights!

Below is a list o some o the major reasons why weight trainingshould be incorporated into every ftness program.1. T TANN = AT OSS. Tats right, at loss. In

terms o weight management, most people think o doingmore cardio, and as benefcial as that is, it does not compareto the eects o at loss rom weight training. Muscle tissue isar more metabolically active than at. Weight training burnsmore calories per time rame, and will allow or more leanmuscle to be added. Te more lean muscle your body has, themore calories your body will burn. Consequently, i you losemuscle mass, you will burn ewer calories throughout the day, which puts you at a higher risk o gaining at. Tis is why weighttraining is crucial or at loss.

    2. T TANN DCASS Sk O NjU. Mo us do not think about injury until it actually happensi you think in terms o preventative care, then the quesbecomes not how to care or an injury once it happens, rather how to decrease the risk o, i not avoid injury altogeWeight training strengthens not only our muscles, but alsotendons and ligaments. Tese structures hold our joints togeand keep them stable. By keeping our joints strong, we areto saeguard the body rom injury stricken motions. Low pain can also be managed and sometimes even avoided proper weight training.

    3. MPOD ON MASS. Osteoporosis is more prevas we get older. According to the American College o SpMedicine, bone mass, which is related to osteoporosis, camaintained or even improved by a consistent weight traiprogram, regardless o age.

    4. MPOD UCOS TOANC. Weight trainingbeen shown to help with managing type 2 diabetes.

    5. T AT TO DO DA ACTTS. Te boddesigned to constantly move. Our muscles make up a majority o the overall body. Letting muscles atrophy (becsmaller and weaker) will hinder the bodys ability to uncproperly. Maintaining a weight training routine will allowbody to stay strong as well as improve unctional abilityeveryday tasks, especially as we get older.

Weight training can be perceived as a scary and daunting tho help with the process o understanding where your weaknare, and what needs to be worked on, fnd a qualifed perstrainer who can assist in this process. Once you give it a try, with it, and you will learn that having a detailed weight traiprogram can put you on the ast track to success.

have trained in ai Chi Chuan or years and, as any martialartist can attest, one o the prevalent instructions given, espe-cially to beginners, is relax. Ironically, most people hear this

and think, But Im already relaxed! Te truth is that most o usdo not know what that means. Te concept is clear enough, butthe actual ability to clear the mind and allow the body to let go otension is ar more dicult, and oentimes even elusive.

Lie can be very demanding. Personal and proessional respon-sibilities provide a near-constant state o push and pull ups

and downs. Add in technological actors such as cell phones andcomputers, and sometimes it eels nearly impossible to escape intoa mindset o total relaxation. Like that beginning ai Chi student,we need the reminder to slow down, get in touch with what we arethinking and eeling, and breathe.

Both Western and Eastern medicine agree that stress can be aserious detriment to overall health. But unlike the medical practicestypically ound in the U.S. and other countries that rely on one doctoror the body and another or the mind, raditional Chinese Medicine(CM) identifes the connection between the two, and treats themtogether through the internal pathways located inside the body.

Stress-related symptoms can reveal themselves in a numbero ways, including sleep issues, digestive disorders, a compro-mised immune system, anxiety/panic attacks, and over-relianceon both over-the-counter and prescription medications. Ratherthan specifcally addressing these outward maniestations, CMinstead ocuses on anchoring and nourishing the mind. Stress canbe viewed like waves across a body o water; when the mind isquieted and drawn down, the person as a whole can then betterwithstand the orce o the waves when they roll in again.

From a physiological perspective, acupuncture releases endor-phins chemicals that can be regarded as our own personal

opiates. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that are producedresponse to certain stimuli, especially ear, pain or stress. Becthey work throughout the central nervous system and intwith receptors ound in regions o the brain responsible or bling pain and controlling emotion, they are prime natural resouto acilitate relaxation and restored health. ightened muscleoen the bodys response to stress; acupuncture addresses thwell, and loosens the muscles to provide relie or headachesneck and back discomort.

Diet plays an important role in health at all times, but parlarly so during times o stress. A common reaction to increanxiety is to eat junk ood choices that run the spectrom salty to greasy to sweet. Te reality is that ried and oods, sweets and pastries, alcohol, caeine and nicotine shbe avoided, i not eliminated. Tese all tax the system, and generate heat within the body, which results in an excited mthat is already fnding it dicult to unwind. Smarter optinclude green leay vegetables, lean meats, and herbs and seaings, such as mint, turmeric, basil, rosemary and thyme.

Unortunately, stress can never be ully avoided or erasedit is possible to learn how to engage it more eectively. Listeto the cues that signal a time to slow down and breathe is thestep. From there, working with a qualifed, caring CM practner to unite the mind and body is a sound step toward a naway to relax and heal.

Too oen we spend our days wondering why we cant loseweight. Why arent we eeling well? Why do we eel sobloated? More times than not, its due to the lack o hydra-

tion in our bodies and the lack o nutrients and exercise we aregetting. What most people dont realize is that water is truly essen-tial to over 70% o our body to maintain good health.

Water doesnt contain any calories and is responsible or helpingour body metabolize stored at, and truly can be one o the mostsignifcant actors in helping us lose weight, thus also eliminatingthat bloating eeling we get when dehydrated. Water can also serveas an appetite suppressant and drinking water when you think youmay be hungry is always a good idea to do frst. More times than

not we arent hungry and we are simply eating out o convenienceand boredom.

Te purest orm o water is water itsel, without any added sugars, carbonation, color additives, etc. Pure water is a tasteless, odorlessand clear liquid, and it is essential or human kind to consume aminimum o eight 8 oz. glasses o water daily. (Per the RDA Recommended Daily Allowances & the U.S. government guide-lines.) O course, overweight individuals need to drink more waterthan the average thin individual, as they tend to retain more water.

Tere are many reasons one should consume water as part omaintaining a healthy human body. Maintaining hydration in ourbodies helps an individual lose weight and maintain muscle tone, which helps to avoid constipation that will lead to water retention.Remember, at burns through muscle, so you need to provide yourmuscles with the water they need daily to help you lose weight.

An individual can retain water when consuming too much salt, taking medications, being pregnant and simply by not drinking theRDA o water daily. Water retention means an abnormal collectiono water within the tissue o the body. Tis happens because youhave deprived your body and its cells o the water it needs to main-tain a healthy state, so it latches on to the little water you have leit, until you provide it with the essential RDA allowance.

A great resource or learning more about the importancdrinking water is the research o Dr. Donald Robertson, whalso an author on the subject o diet. He has ound that 50-90the weight in living things is, and should be, water. Furthermhe states that water transports, combines and chemically brdown ats, carbohydrates, proteins and salts, which is essentiaweight loss. Very important, since weight loss is such an epidin our country today!

So why not make it a daily habit to drink a minimum o eigoz. glasses o water daily? Its a very simple step that you can tabetter and protect your health! Heres a toast, with a glass o wto you! Cheers!

As ear is reed into the consciousness, it magnifes, creatingand ampliying more ear. Te cycle o ear continues to grow andexpand pulling us deeper and deeper into the instinct o ear. Whenwe chose to live and act in ear, we essentially have entered a cove-nant or contract with ear. Te ear user terms o agreement are:

ow-level laser therapy is a non-invasive, surgery-ree, drug-ree treatment option to help reduce inammation, swell-ing and pain, as well as to help speed up the healing process

in pets. Tis newer technology has been scientifcally provento be successul in treating injuries, post-surgical pain and manychronic conditions.

A non-surgical laser uses a beam o concentrated red light to pene-trate deeply into tissue without damaging it. Te red light o laserwould be similar to a laser pointer, but at a broader wavelength and

more concentrated energy level. Te laser energy produces a biologi-cal response in the cells called photo-bio-modulation, which leadsto reduced pain, reduced inammation and increased healing. Tisred light is delivered through a non-invasive hand piece held on theaected area. Your pet may eel a gentle warming without pain orpressure, and most treatments last a matter o minutes.

hile laser therapy is not recommended for neoplasia or

cancer, it can be used to help pets with the following issues:

    Post-surgical pain. Wounds. Sprains Cuts.

Cat bites. Arthritis. Periodontal disease. Hip dysplasia. Many more!

Since 2002, Dave Vollmers has beenhelping to ree patients o chronicpain or alignment issues by treating

their mind, body and spirit as one being. He does this through myoascial release, aorm o alternative therapy with a hands-on technique, which he became passion-ate about aer growing rustrated withthe healthcare system and wanting, aboveall else, to help people eel better. Pain,

according to Vollmers, has three compo-nents: physical, emotional and spiritual, and treating all o these areas is moreeective than typical therapy, which onlyaddresses the physical.

Myoascial release, which was created byJohn F. Barnes, P, is a orm o therapy thatlooks at the so tissues o the human bodyknown as ascia. Fascia is very denselywoven, covering and interpenetratingevery muscle, bone, nerve, artery and veinas well as all o our internal organs, includ-ing the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cordand can become restricted and cause painor discomort aer injury, dehydration ortrauma. Myoascial release helps to loosenthese restrictions and improve exibilityand stability.

Barnes describes his systems holisticapproach in this way: the use o myoas-cial release allows us to look at each patientas a unique individual. Our one-on-one

therapy sessions are hands-on treatmentsduring which our therapists use a multi-tude o myoascial release techniques andmovement therapy. We promote indepen-dence through education in proper bodymechanics and movement, though theenhancement o strength, exibility andpostural movement awareness.

At Specialized Terapy Services, thereare two major rules: the patient is in charge

and we never orce the ascial system sowe never cause injury. Each patients needsare assessed individually, and Vollmersnever turns anyone away. He believes thatmyoascial release can beneft everyone ortheir own individual reasons and wishes toeducate his clients to take charge o theirown bodies.

rilled cheese on a pretzel bun; maple burst pancakes; coldnachos; breaded chicken nuggets these are some othe lunch options in school caeterias across the country.

Following streamlined government regulations aimed to makeschool lunches healthier, some parents are le scratching theirheads wondering i anything has changed.

In January 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama and AgricultureSecretary om Vilsack unveiled new standards or school mealsthat will result in healthier meals or kids across the nation. Tenew meal requirements will raise standards or the frst time inmore than 15 years and are expected to improve the health andnutrition o nearly 32 million kids that participate in school meal

programs every school day. Te healthier meal requirements are akey component o the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which waschampioned by the First Lady as part o her Lets Move! campaignand signed into law by President Obama. Te new standards alignschool meals with the latest nutrition science and the real-worldcircumstances o Americas schools, according to the United StatesDepartment o Agriculture. Te USDA indicates that there are aew main components o the new lunch and breakast standards:

Oer students both ruits and vegetables every day o the week. Substantially increase oerings o whole grain-rich oods. Oer only at-ree or low-at milk varieties. Limit calories based on the age o the children being served to

ensure proper portion size. Increase the ocus on reducing the amounts o saturated at,

    trans ats and sodium.

Tese changes are not perect, but many believe they are a stepin the right direction. Some parents, however, eel the new stip-ulations are not stringent enough, particularly when it comes towork-arounds or some o the new policies. For example, syrupycanned ruit cocktails that are high in sugar count toward the ruitrequirement in many schools.

Sodium content is another bone o contention. Research cates that lowering sodium levels can reduce the risk o car

vascular disease and hypertension. o adhere to the new lprogram, schools will have to cut sodium in lunches by more 50 percent within 10 years. Currently, elementary school luncontain roughly 1,300 mg o sodium. Te goal is to lower th1,230 mg by the 2014/2015 school year, gradually dropping tomg by 2017. Many parents and health experts eel sodium lare not going down ast enough.

Te new plan will also extend nutrition standards outsidthe caeteria. Foods and beverages sold in vending machinesthrough other venues on campus must also be modifed to ad

to a healthy diet.Canadians may learn rom the trials in the United States sh

they develop their own school lunch programs. Canada remthe only westernized nation without a ederally unded scood program. Te reason Canada has not developed a natischool ood strategy (or even a coordinated provincial and ttorial program) is that no single ministry takes responsibilityood. Students can bring their own lunches or choose amongood in caeterias or snacks rom vending machines.

One company taking advantage o the United States new sclunch standards is Dominos Pizza. It has developed its SSlice school lunch program, which meets the revised standset by the USDA. Freshly baked and delivered to schools, SSlice eatures multiple nutritious ingredients like whole-gcrust, light mozzarella cheese and reduced sodium sauce. Redsodium pepperoni is also available. More than 3,000 schools istates participate in this ood program.

Although many changes have been put in place to make sclunches healthier, not all parents think these changes are sucParents who have concerns about school lunches can prelunches or their children that meet their personal standards.

One o the most relaxing and sought out personal care servicesis massage. And its always a wonderul experience going toa spa, isnt it? Te benefts o massage are numerous!

Everyone has stress in their lives. Since every body is dier-ent, people carry their stress dierently and in dierent parts otheir bodies. Te most common areas where stress is carried arethe lower back and shoulders; sometimes even the hips. Massagereduces the physical stress, anxiety, depression and mental stressrom everyday lie. Aer a massage, your mind is much calmer, you eel better all over and, most importantly, you are relaxed. Allthe mental chatter you experience when you are stressed seems to

just go away. You can think clearly and your ocus is better.Your immune system is strengthened by massage. Te blood

and lymph circulate much aster, thereby removing toxins muchaster. I you have symptoms o a cold or i you have a cold andthen get a massage, your cold will come to the surace; it will getworse. But you will get rid o it aster. A big help with that wouldbe to ush your system out with water.

When any movement is perormed repeatedly, the repetitivemovement creates inammation in the so tissue, which maycause nerve impingement and may also cause numbness and tick-ling in an extremity due to a decrease in circulation. Massage candecrease pain in the so tissue injury and also improve posture.

For individuals with irregularity, massage is very helpul.Massaging the colon will make the dierence. Along with that, ensuring a proper diet and sucient water intake is a plus.

For athletics, sports massage is very important beore andduring the sport. Te muscles will keep on fring and be readyor any movement, but aer the sport, relaxation or therapeuticmassage will relax the muscles, increase recovery and remove themetabolic waste rom the muscles.

Tis leadthe deterioration o your health. Your breaths should come the diaphragm, pushing up and down, and the contractingexpanding o the abdomen.

One o the many nerves that emerge rom the brain is the vnerve. It helps to regulate blood pressure, along with other

tions. When the pressure receptors o the vagus nerve are stlated, this prompts a change in high blood pressure. Individwith hypertension who received massages regularly have sha signifcant improvement in blood pressure when compareindividuals who do not receive massages.

Massage is benefcial or all age groups. Newborns orwonderul bond with their mothers when massaged. A secan beneft rom touch with a light eather u massage. Capatients can beneft rom massage because their muscles bec

very tight rom chemotherapy. Te cancer will not spread toother part o the body. Women recovering rom post-mastectcan beneft rom range-o-motion and elimination o edema.

m writing this article to shed somelight on the power, side eects andlimitations o acupuncture. More

importantly, Im writing this to inormyou o the opportunities and benefts thatacupuncture oers.

Acupuncture andOriental medicineAcupuncture is one o eight componentso the broader term known as Orientalmedicine. Te other seven componentsare: herbals, nutrition, ai Ji, Feng Shui,ui Na (Chinese massage), Ba Zi (Chinesebirth charts) and Qi Gong. I will coverother components o Oriental medicine inarticles to come.

Acupuncture has been practiced to some

degree or over 1800 years, and althoughit originated in what is now modern-dayChina, in truth every culture has usedsome orm o acupuncture throughouthuman history.

asic termsAcupuncture is the insertion o thin, solidneedles into the body. Te regions o thebody are divided into zones that havenames such as leg Yang Ming and leg JueYin. In America, the regions are morecommonly known as names o organs suchas stomach (St) and liver (Liv). Here, pointsare identifed on pathways or lines knownas meridians (e.g., St36). Tere are 14common meridians that are oen the ocuso most acupuncturists.

Acupunctureverses acupressureAcupuncture and acupressure have a

common history and purpose, with themain dierence that the latter does nothave any needle insertions and oen oersa bit more discomort simply due to morenerve fbers being pressed.

So how doesthis all really wor?Te body itsel is in a constant state o break-down and repair. When injured, your bodyimmediately begins a series o hormonal(chemical) and cellular responses (WBC,RBC, lymph uid) that ood to the injurysite. Tis is known as a healing cascade oran inammatory state. Te body orches-trates a very precise response to stabilizethe injury site and increase circulation

(swelling, redness, heat), remove damtissue (ache), repair the removed tireinorce the injury site, and then rethe entire system/area to normal tion. Normal unction is key, the wants to unction optimally at all tiWhen disease or injury set in, the bis no longer in normal unction, sosystem responds with measures to pusystem back into unction. However, sotimes the system becomes overwhelmeconused and the body remains in a heened state o inammation. or a ew years, I have experiencedsome occasional, but severe, anxiety.Aer a amily member o mine came

very close to losing her lie, the anxietyreared its ugly head again. But I believethat some things happen or a reason, andI was lucky enough during that dark andscary time to meet Jeremy Gilsoul o AspireWellness & Liestyle Center.

I immediately elt comortable theminute I met Jeremy, and he greeted mewith a huge smile and the kindest, most

soothing voice. I walked into the center, which was almost like a relaxing spa with areal healing energy about the rooms them-selves. We walked into Jeremys oce wherehe sat next to me and began to explain theconsultation process. He asked me to fllout a bit o paperwork and said we wouldgo through most o the questions together.I was so surprised and encouraged to hearthat in response to some o my answers, hehad a reason as to why that element may becausing or aiding my anxiety. For example,I did not realize that the aspartame in mychewing gum or even the rare occasions Ihave a Diet Coke can add to my heightenedanxiety levels. It is technically an excitoxin.I honestly would never have made thatconnection on my own. I also learned thatthere is sugar in cigarettes; although I donot smoke, my boyriend does. Tis list ochanges I ound I could make in my eatinghabits to reduce anxiety is truly endless.

Te amount o knowledge that Jeremy hason the body as a whole is amazing!

Aer such an interesting and enlighten-ing consultation, Jeremy believed I wouldbe a good candidate to be helped througha number o his services, and we decidedto start with acupuncture. At this point,we went into another spa-like room whereI lay back in a comortable chair while heexplained his needling technique. I knowpeople hear the word needling and itdoesnt sound very appealing, but let me

assure you, I have an extremely low toler-ance or pain, and it did not hurt one bit!I have had acupuncture in the past, andexperienced some pain, but this time Idid not at all! I actually made a commentto Jeremy about it and he explained thatit is the technique he uses, which he hasspent many years studying, in addition tohis three years at the Midwest College oOriental Medicine.

Te reason Jeremy decided to start withacupuncture was because through ourconversation during my consultation I toldhim that my job can be stressul, whichcan lead to heightened anxiety. Aer myappointment with Jeremy, I was goinghome to work rom my home oce or therest o the day to wrap up odds and ends, asit was deadline or me. So, aer a relaxing20-30 minutes, I was ready to test my treat-ment with the rest o my day.

However, beore I le, I met another one

o Jeremys current patients, who hadhad a horrible couple o years o surgand intense pain, and was now experiing the early signs o menopause. Sheonly been with Jeremy or 12 treatmand she had improved so signifcantlyher story gave me goose bumps. Seeinghand what Jeremy can do or others, Ieven more excited to go on and beginwork day to see i I elt any dierent.

As we walked to the door togeJeremy told me that acupuncture w

defnitely help me with anxiety, suggested his Emerge Perception Cotioning program would also beneftHe thought that by reconditioningperceptions, I could eliminate my anpermanently. (Check out his Emprogram and his other services at waspirelivewell.com.) Ten Jeremy gava warm hug goodbye, which told meonly that he and I connected as a prtioner and patient, but that he truly about his patients. And o I went tohow my day would go.

Cat guardians usually think their eline is nauseated due tohairballs. Dog guardians most commonly ear that theircanine buddy has ingested a oreign object, which has

caused an obstruction. Tese pet lovers should be aware that thereis a more common and potentially serious aiction called pancre-atitis that can cause vomiting.

A diagnosis o pancreatitis is oen missed i a practitioner is notlooking or it. Lack o diagnosis can result in intermittent abdomi-nal pain, chronic diarrhea, diabetes and even death.

Te pancreas makes enzymes or digestion and insulin orglucose regulation. Inammation o the pancreas is called pancre-atitis, which is painul and causes poor digestion. Severe damage

to the pancreatic cells that produce insulin can lead to diabetes.Any pet with gastrointestinal upset could have pancreatitis.

Tankully there is a simple test, which can be included in any bloodscreening panel, called Spec cPL or canines or Spec PL or elines.

Some practices can run a variation o this test in the clinic in theevent o an emergency. Severe, acute pancreatitis is treated withhospitalization and intravenous uids. Antibiotics may or may notbe helpul. An antiemetic called Cerenia can be very helpul or

vomiting. Te prognosis can be grave but rapid recognition o thedisease can be lie-saving.

Low grade, chronic pancreatitis, i recognized, can be managed. Some individual cats and certain breeds o dogs are more proneto this disorder. Schnauzers are oen hyperlipidemic. Tis meanstheir serum is flled with excessive at and is oen a milky, ratherthan clear color. Feeding a dog with this condition a piece ocheese or cooked at rom a steak could be enough to stimulate apancreatic are-up.

In general, dairy, cooked ats, excessive at, sugary/starchy oodsor treats seem to stimulate pancreatitis. Feeding these oods to dogsand cats should always be avoided. Ingredient labels should beexamined or more than one source o starch, sugar, maple syrup, etc. Cooked at should never be given to dogs and cats. Marrow

should be removed rom bones beore eeding. Dairy shoulavoided, although a small amount o cottage cheese seems tacceptable. Some drugs have been implicated as contributo the development o pancreatitis, such as potassium brom
