    The College Boards Bob Costas Grants

    or the Teaching o WritingSupporting Teachers Who Inspire Students to WriteThe College Board announces a cal l or applications or the eighth annual Bob Costas Grants or theTeaching o Writing. Six grants o $3,000 will be awarded to recognize exceptional teachers o grades sixthrough 12 or the innovative methods they use to develop their students writing skills. We are lookingor teachers who are already doing an inspiring job o teaching their students to write and who wil lbeneft the most rom a grant to enhance a successul project.

    Projects could be carried out in school, through an ater-school writing workshop or during a summerprogram. Teachers rom all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply; the grants are designed tosupport not only literature and language arts teachers but also teachers who include writing instruction

    in the teaching o the sciences, math, history and the arts. Any project qualifes i it introduces youngpeople to the joy o writing. Applicants will submit a detailed description o their project and anexplanation o how they will use the unds. To read about the 2012 winning projects, please visitwww.collegeboard.org/costasgrants.

    The College Board created the Bob Costas Grants or the Teaching o Writing to support teachers and tothank Bob Costas, the Emmy Awardwinning broadcaster and author, or his dedication to the crat owriting and his generous public service work on behal o the National Commission on Writing.

    Guidelines:

    Grantsof$3,000areawardedannuallytooneteacherineachoftheCollegeBoardssixregions:

    Western, Southwestern, Midwestern, Southern, Middle States and New England. Recipientsmustbeworkingteachersofgradessixthrough12whoareafliatedwithapublicor

    nonpublic middle or high school.

    Grantssupportprogramsinoroutsideoftheclassroomthatmotivatestudentstostrengthentheirwriting skills. Grants are not limited by academic subject or writing genre.

    Applicantsmustsubmitatwo-pagestatementexplainingtheirideaorprojectanddescribingindetail how the grant would be used.

    Applicantsmustprovideastudentorstudentgrouptestimonialandoneprofessionalreference,suchas a principal, another teacher, a counselor, the head o a parent organization or a community leader.
