As we move through the ice and snow that has been blasting most of our region this winter, hopefully you’re staying cozy and warm. Despite the frigid temperatures, many chapters and state councils have already kicked off 2009 with a variety of meetings and events— and the Northeast Regional Team has had the opportunity to attend several of them! Last month, Susan participated in the Tri-State Leadership Conference in Southbridge, MA. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island State Councils, this collaborative event brought together nearly 70 chapter and state council volunteer leaders from across the three states. In addition to a great variety of networking and best-practice sharing sessions, attendees were provided with an overview of the SHRM volunteer structure and available resources. Conference sponsors ADP, JobCorps and Bearing Star Insurance helped offset the conference costs, and everyone was treated to a great keynote presentation by author David A. O’Brien entitled, “Team Building and the Leadership Role.” Participants also received a copy of O’Brien’s new book, “The Navigator’s Handbook: 101 Leadership Lessons for Work & Life,” as a gift from their respective state council in recognition of their hard work and dedication as volunteers. All in all, it was an exceptional event in a beautiful venue—and a great example of what can happen when three states combine efforts to invest in the development of their volunteer leaders. Hats off to CT, MA and RI!  Your Northeast Regional Team, Susan, Phyllis & Liz February 2009 Update for the Northeast Region

Greetings Northeast Volunteer Leaders!

As we move through the ice and snow that hasbeen blasting most of our region this winter,

hopefully you’re staying cozy and warm.

Despite the frigid temperatures, many chaptersand state councils have already kicked off

2009 with a variety of meetings and events—

and the Northeast Regional Team has had the

opportunity to attend several of them!

Last month, Susan participated in the Tri-State Leadership Conference inSouthbridge, MA. Co-sponsored by the Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode

Island State Councils, this collaborative event

brought together nearly 70 chapter and state

council volunteer leaders from across the threestates. In addition to a great variety of

networking and best-practice sharing sessions,

attendees were provided with an overview of the SHRM volunteer structure and available

resources. Conference sponsors ADP,JobCorps and Bearing Star Insurance helped

offset the conference costs, and everyone was

treated to a great keynote presentation by author

David A. O’Brien entitled, “Team Building andthe Leadership Role.” Participants also received a

copy of O’Brien’s new book, “The Navigator’s

Handbook: 101 Leadership Lessons for Work &

Life,” as a gift from their respective state councilin recognition of their hard work and dedication

as volunteers.

All in all, it was an exceptional event in a beautiful venue—and a great example of

what can happen when three states combine efforts to invest in the development of

their volunteer leaders. Hats off to CT, MA and RI!
