to the Uniquely Nelson website. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says the free Wi-Fi service is proving to be a success.“It is proving to be a valuable addition for

visitors to our city centre and very much in line with our commitment to create a friend-ly CBD for both locals and visitors. It is a chance to promote what’s happening in our city, with those logging in to our free Wi-Fi service landing at our Uniquely Nelson site

where there is lots of information on what to do, where to go and how to enjoy our fabu-lous city.”The Wi-Fi is available within the Nelson CBD, between Selwyn, Rutherford, Halifax, and Collingwood Sts.

The Fire Service says Nelsonians are flirting with disaster by not having working smoke alarms installed in their homes.Over the past month the Nelson Fire Service has attended four fires where the owners of the home haven’t had a smoke alarm. Station officer Craig Davies says it was fortunate they started during the day, so the occupants could see the smoke and get out.

“Potential for disaster is huge, in recent times people have been lucky. Chances are the luck will run out.”He says the fires they attended included homes with elderly and young children. “We really want to make sure people are up to speed on smoke alarms. We need people to sort it out and get them installed, or make sure the batteries still work.”Craig says that people need to have a smoke alarm in every

bedroom of the house as well as hallways and living rooms, and they they need to be on the ceiling, not the wall. In one recent incident, the fire service was

called to a sleepout in Tahunanui. The teenager who lived in the room had seen the smoke coming from a metre board in the room. If that happened during the night, Craig says they would never have noticed. “Your nose turns off when you’re asleep and that smoke was very toxic, so the occupant would have just died in their sleep. If you’re lucky enough to be awake, you’ll get away with it, but if you’re asleep, you won’t be so lucky.”

TPPA protesters block city streetsJacob Chandler

A protest in opposition to the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement attracted hundreds of people to Nelson’s CBD on Saturday morning and caused traffic problems as members of the march poured out onto the intersection on Hardy and Ru-therford Sts. The protest started at 1903 Square with speeches, before travelling down Hardy St and through the Nelson Market. Protesters then blocked off the Rutherford/Hardy St intersec-tion for around 15 minutes with police trying to hold back the crowd, keeping at least one lane open for a short time near the Nelson Cadet Unit base. Sergeant David Lauer says, while police were made aware of the protest and had spoken to the organiser that morning confirming numbers, he was not impressed with the deci-sion to block traffic at the busy intersection. “It was a disappointing part of the protest,” he says. “We were assured marshals would keep protesters off the roads and we will be following up on this.” Event organiser Graeme O’Brian says some members of the group just started standing

in the middle of the road. “If that’s what people do we just follow,” he says. “It was mainly just to inconvenience those people who are not standing with us. Either those who disa-gree or are so apathetic that they don’t even care.” He estimates around 800 peo-ple turned up to the protest and says on the whole he was im-pressed with the support. “This just shows how much people really care about their country and the laws of the country - they don’t want to see it sold out.” Nelson Emergency Depart-ment doctor Andrew Munro says the TPPA looks set to change health forever. “Doc-

tors and dentists from around New Zealand are deeply con-cerned about this deal. More than ever, equal access to high quality publicly-funded health-care is under threat,” he says. Tasman youth councillor and Waimea College student Clare Leyland, says if New Zealand signs the TPPA it will have long term effects and even greater consequences for her genera-tion. She says she is grateful to the number of older resi-dents who were taking a stand to protect her generation. “We don’t appreciate issues such as sovereignty. We aren’t turned on by trade deals and tariff lev-els, so it’s hard to get us aware and motivated.”

School bus crash near Atawhai: A school bus carrying 20 children was in-volved in an accident on Friday morn-ing near Todd Bush Rd. Senior fire of-ficer Symon Mitchell says the driver of the car was taken to hospital but was not in a serious condition. None of the chil-dren on board were injured, but were “shaken” and eventually moved to an-other bus before being taken to school.

Pokie thief causes school lock down: A 25 year old man was arrested in Nelson on Thursday morning after assaulting a security guard at the Work and Income office and then heading to the Wakatu Hotel, where he pushed a customer off his chair in the pokie room and stole his money. He escaped on a bicycle to the Victory area, causing the local primary school to go into “lock down”. Victory Primary School principal Hel-en Taylor-Young says the school was in lock down for around ten minutes. “They [police] called and said that there was an offender in the area and to lock the school down, which we can do quite quickly,” says Helen. The man was ar-rested about midday in the Kawai St area, say police.

Originair’s maiden flight takes off: Originair and its passengers celebrated the airline’s inaugural flight last week at Nelson Airport with a cake-cutting ceremony and, most importantly, a suc-

cessful takeoff. The flight from Nelson to Palmerston North was full with 17 passengers, who were also gifted goody bags by staff. Originair will be flying di-rect between Nelson and Wellington as well, with flights starting on September 13. Tickets at www.originair.nz

Intruder sexually assaults woman: A Richmond couple were disturbed in their bedroom in the early hours of Sunday last week. Police have now con-firmed that the female occupant of the house was sexually assaulted during the incident. Police are urging people to ensure their own safety by locking doors and win-dows and keeping vehicles secure at all times, after the woman was sexually as-saulted in her bedroom. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig John-ston says the incident, which occurred about 3am on Sunday morning in the Gladstone Rd area, was very serious and police were concentrating on locat-ing the offender involved.

Gladstone Rd traffic now on camera: The wait will soon be over for frustrat-ed drivers who have been seeing red at the lights on Gladstone Rd, with a new camera system being installed to help improve traffic flows. The phasing of lights at three inter-sections on Gladstone Rd, which are owned by the New Zealand Transport Agency and cost $4.3 million, have been an issue for drivers since they were installed in 2009. But the good news is that NZTA has installed cameras at the lights to relay information to its Traf-fic Operations Centre in Wellington so that traffic flow can be improved by re-mote control.

PRIDE OF NZ AWARDS: Rebekah Malthus of Nelson, winner of the Community Spirit Award. Photo: Martin Hunter/NZ Herald.

A Nelson mum won the Community Spirit award at the regional Pride of New Zealand awards in Christchurch last week.Rebekah Malthus founded Project Butterfly as a support network for parents who had lost children. The project has created the butterfly path in Fairfield Park and also runs workshops to help families. She was one of six category winners at the South Island regional awards, which aim to celebrate deserving heroes throughout the country. Now, Rebekah will head to Auckland for the national awards next month. There she will take on other Community Spirit winners from the three North Island regions. Rebekah says she was shocked to win. “There were some amazing people there and I’ve been looking at the people

who won in the North Island and they’re all doing amazing things, so to even be nominated is huge.”Another Project Butterfly member, Aine Burn, was nominated in the Fundraiser of the Year category. Rebekah says she wishes more could have been nominated. “It’s not about me, it’s just that my name goes on everything, but I wish we could get some of the others that have helped recognised as well. Sometimes I feel that I get all the accolades but I would have never been able to achieve it without all the other people that helped.”The national award winners will be selected from the regional award winners by a panel of judges. Voting for the People’s Choice Award opened yesterday, with the winner to receive $10,000 from TSB Bank to go towards their chosen cause. To vote visit www.prideofnzawards.co.nz

Nelson College for Girls choir Stella Nova took out a Silver Award at the national Big Sing finals in Wellington on Saturday. The choir competed against 23 other schools and also took out the Youth Ambassadors Award. The school’s choral director Rebecca Monopoli says the award is really sought after.

“It’s for the choir that best embodies the spirit of the Big Sing. It’s a real compliment to the girls, that’s for sure.” She says two of the five songs the choir performed were sung in Bulgarian and one was sung in Basque, which helped to set the performance apart from other choirs at the competition.

A local gardener is on a mis-sion to keep Nelson kids healthy, and is donating his time and re-sources to plant fruit trees in all 19 kindergartens throughout the region.Graham Smith from Garden Property Services Ltd has teamed up with Waimea Nurseries and Green Waste To Zero, and will be planting every kindergarten from Nelson to Golden Bay with four fruit trees - a plum tree, an apple tree, a feijoa tree, and a mandarin tree. With two young children of his own, Graham says he has “seen firsthand” the sugar-filled lunch boxes kids are bringing to kin-dergarten. “I felt the need to do something about it,” he says. “Our mission is to try and shape the health and well-being of current and future generations of children by pro-viding better access to fresh fruits and vegetables.” Graham approached Trish Ca-sey, CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, with his idea, and before long it was “all go,” with the planting kicking off last Tuesday at Victory Square

Kindergarten. Children are a big part of the planting process and are encour-aged to help dig the holes, plant the trees, shovel in the compost, and stamp down the earth. “We hope to educate them in the pro-cess from the start, and when they are established they will have the freedom of choice to pick fresh fruit,” says Graham.“Fruit can be quite expensive at times, so this should also give the kindergartens an opportu-nity to provide fresh fruit to kids throughout the year. With proper pruning and training you can get bumper crops from dwarf trees.”Trish Casey says the trees will be a great opportunity to teach chil-dren about growing food in our own backyards and making use of the produce. “We are very ap-preciative of these two companies for their contribution to our kin-dergartens,” she says.A total of 76 fruit trees, worth around $2500 have been donated by Waimea Nurseries, and organ-

ic compost has been donated by Green Waste To Zero. Kate Marshall from Waimea Nurseries says she is excited to be backing the project. “We donate trees all the time,” she

says. “In the scheme of things it’s not many trees for us, but it will make such a big difference to the kindergartens.”The project will take Graham around 60 hours to complete,

which is all out of his own time. “I’ll just work it around my jobs,” he says. “We’re doing it for the kids - it’s about time we gave something back to the commu-nity.”

Nelson commemorated the 70th anniversary of VJ Day at Rutherford Park on Saturday. Along with members of the public were some veterans from the second world war, each with their own memories of the event. Allan Carson was in the Air Force with number 19 fighter squadron, as an intelligence officer, when the war ended. His job was to brief the pilots before their missions and take their reports upon return. They were in New Britain on VJ Day and, after hearing rumours for weeks, were finally informed of Japan’s unconditional surrender.

A month later Allan was required to take four Japanese pilots, who had been ordered down from their base at Raboul, and hand them over to the Australians. At the age of 23 on VJ Day, Allan says he had found it hard to believe

they were at peace and had mixed feelings over the two bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Murray Rowe joined the Navy in 1940 for 12 years, serving in the Mediterranean and the Pacific.

After the surrender, his squadron stayed and toured Japan for four months but, before going home, they were taken into Nagasaki. With radiation still active, it was something he is still suffering from today.

Organiser Kerry Neal says last Saturday’s VJ Day celebration was a chance to remember the past, view displays of vehicles from the era, and talk to the veterans who still remember the historical event well.

Nelson brides are being called upon to dust off their wedding gowns for this year’s ‘bride of the year’ competition, which is being run as part of the Nelson Wedding Show this October. To be eligible to enter, brides must have gotten married be-tween 30 April 2014 and 30 April 2015, and of course, still need to be married.Show organiser Casey Steven-son says that although it is nor-mally the groom who enters the bride, they also get plenty of entries from bridesmaids and

mothers-of-the-bride. “Who-ever enters the bride needs to send in a photo of the bride and groom, and a blurb about them and why they should be selected,” she says. The entries will be narrowed down to a top five, who will get their hair and make-up profes-sionally done on the day of the show. The overall winner will win a mystery weekend escape, and there will also be a people’s choice award, as voted on show day, which will be a pearl neck-lace and earrings from Glen James Jewellers. Judging the brides this year will

be Glen Tomlinson from Glen James Jewellers, Sarah Board from Nelson Weekly and Tonia Brydon from Tonic Hair Cul-ture and Beauty, who is also in charge of hair and make-up on the day.Brides will also have the oppor-tunity to ‘trash’ their wedding gown at the show. “It’s just a bit of fun on the day,” says Casey. Entries can be sent to [email protected] and close mid-September. The Nel-son wedding show is being held on Sunday October 4 at Saxton Stadium. Entry is $10 per per-son (kids under 16 free).

Hira School to host fundraiserHira School is gearing up for its biggest fund-raiser of the year, the Valley to View Adventure Bike and Hike day, this Sunday. Joining forces for the second year running with Happy Valley Adventures, the public will get a unique opportunity to access private Delaware Bay farmland, as well as extensive trails on Hap-py Valley land at Cable Bay.Event spokesperson Kirsten McGhie says the public has a window of opportunity to view some of the most spectacular Delaware and Ca-ble Bay scenery, either on foot or mountain bike. She says following on from the success of last year’s event, Happy Valley will be offering dis-count sky wire rides, the Tree Tops cafe will be open to bikers and walkers, and there’ll be kids’ paintball and Argo rides. The Valley to View event is from 10 till 4pm this Sunday August 23. Happy Valley Adventures, Ca-ble Bay Rd. Wet weather date Sunday August 30.

Nelson’s most luxurious yachts will be on display this Saturday, in a nautical version of a garden trail or kitchen trail.People wanting to join the trail will purchase a ticket in advance, which will give them the opportunity to come on board some of Nelson’s luxury boats based in the Nelson Marina and at Guyton’s wharf. There are 14 boats in the tour and participants can make their way individually around the marina to visit the yachts and launches available for viewing. The event is to help raise money for the Nelson College for Girls sailing team, which will be representing New Zealand at the 2015

Interdominion Team Sailing Championships in Canberra in September. The luxury boat tour will be held this Saturday August 22, with a back-up of Sunday 23 in case of bad weather. Organiser Toni Chittenden says the trail should have wide appeal. “The men would love to see the engine rooms, the sailors the equipment, and for those like me, the opportunity to see the interior decorating and fit-outs.”

For tickets please contact Toni or tickets are also available from Burnsco Marine and Nelson College for Girls Reception, $25 per person.

A statue of a soldier is soon to take pride of place in Marsden Valley Cemetery, as a nod to those who served in World War 1.Nelson City Council’s community services committee confirmed at their meeting on Thursday that they will grant $20,000 to the Returned Services Association towards the statue, which will go behind the flagpole at the RSA section of the cemetery. The statue is planned to be unveiled on Anzac Day 2016, which also marks the RSA’s 100th anniversary.RSA spokesperson Mason Robinson, who is the driving force behind the project, says that the council’s contribution is “great news,” but another $30,000 - $40,000 is still required for the project to go ahead. He says they will be applying for funds from Veterans Affairs and community trusts to make up the additional costs. “The council have given us the base which we have to now leverage, and we’re very confident we’ll achieve the additional funding,” says Mason.Councillor Pete Rainey says that it’s important that the council “steps up” and plays a role in supporting the project. “I know it has been discussed for some time to do the statue and it’s good we can get behind it and help to commemorate the memory of WW1,” he says.Mason says the idea for the statue came to him about three years ago, as he thought the RSA section of the cemetery needed a landmark. “It will just give the area a bit more presence, and acknowledge the fallen soldiers,” he says. The statue will be of a WW1 soldier who will be respectfully bowing his head for his comrades, and stand at around seven foot tall. Donations and bequests for the statue are gratefully being accepted. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so by contacting RSA President Barry Pont on (03) 548 6815.

Project Butterfly founder wins Pride of NZ award:

Well deserved, Rebekah, awe-some work! Tania Kearns.

Well done, Rebekah. Such a champion for a great cause. I'm

forever grateful. Lisa Michelle Ward.

Well done and certainly de-served. Suzie Ilina.

Congratulations Rebekah, you are doing an awesome and very

important job. You go girl. Linda Oaten.

Pokie theft puts school in lock down:Is this WINZ pushing people into desperate needs to get mon-

ey? Belinda Jones.

So easy to blame others and that's the problem in society

now. The real problem is the person who stole. Jo Bishop.

Sometimes people have to do stupid things to survive. The

government doesn't make it easy to live these days. What if he has kids at home he's trying to feed and was desperate. Ya never know. Sherri Diack.

Nick Smith asks NCC why it didn't ap-ply for blackspot funding:

Short-sighted... again... Sally King.

Staggering short-sightedness in Nelson. Brian Gower.

Absolute rubbish that we have useless cell coverage in this day

and age, we live in Stoke and have NIL coverage, before that we lived in the Brook - NIL coverage there, seem a lit-tle short-sighted for Nelson yet again. It would be great to have coverage in case of emergencies when one doesn't have a landline. Hope you get some answers, Nick, don't count on it though. Rebecca Thomson.

It's not the NCC or ratepayers job to improve cellphone cov-

erage. It is the role of providers such as Vodafone or Spark. The funding will cover some of the costs, but I totally ob-ject to my ratepayers money then being spent on improving cellphone coverage. That's a provider cost! Jo Bishop.

I think this is the first time ever that I agree with Nick Smith.

Ana Fierek.

TPPA protest halts traffic:Because traffic is the most im-portant thing to them.

Phillip Walker.

I am disappointed with the po-lice here. They should have li-

aised better, and been prepared for the strength of feeling that TPP has roused. Zela Charlton.

My family and I and our friends did not block the road in order to

inconvenience people, merely to make our voices heard by a government intent

on ignoring all the citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand who do not condone se-crecy in sovereignty matters relating to trade. It was a great march and hopeful-ly we at least encouraged more people to find out about the dangers of the TPPA. The police were very good at looking out for us - we appreciated that, and af-ter all it was only for a short time. Nick Kiddey.

I spoke to two officers after being told to turn around at the end of

Trafalgar St, and, was more or less told to piss off and its not their job to close roads. What a load of tripe. The roads were not cordoned off and there were no road closure signs, I respect them for standing up for fairness but I pay to use public roads and I should have the right to pass through without being obstruct-ed by foot traffic blocking an unclosed roadway. David Flynn.

Fine, if you don't agree with what's happening, protest. We

live in a democracy - that's your right. But "being an inconvenience to people who haven't joined in?"P*&^ off, I don't agree with homoeop-athy, but do I go a local store and stop people from going into the store or stop public roads from being used. Jog on, you prats. Karl Newton.

Communist society is the only hope, don't listen to the capital-

istic propaganda. Declan Ricketts.

Craig and Kellie Hamilton’s success in real estate has been more than they dreamed of. Since start-ing the Mike Pero Real Estate franchise in Nelson and Richmond over three years ago, Craig and Kellie and their hardworking team have won sev-eral major awards. So you probably won’t be sur-prised that their re-sults at the latest Mike Pero conference in Fiji a few weeks ago were outstand-ing. The team took home four awards, the first was one of the top awards for their sales team, the second was a special appreciation award for their community involvement and the third celebrated their marketing skills. But the icing on the cake was an award that recognised them as the number one franchise in the country for sales, an award they have now proudly won three times in a row. Their community involvement award celebrated the team’s major sponsorship of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants, as well as the support they have given to help a number of deserving local chil-dren through the Mike Pero Foundation. Craig says that their achievement is something the whole team is very proud of as it is not an easy

accomplishment, considering there are hundreds of people eligible for the awards given out at the conference. Craig believes the awards they won represent his team’s commitment to their clients and are a testament to their successful market-ing, their ability to get houses on the market at the

right prices and create satisfied clients with fast sales. In the short time that’s passed since returning from the conference, Craig says they have already sold four million dol-lars worth of real es-tate, another notewor-thy achievement. Craig and Kellie’s children were also in attendance at the con-ference, giving them

a chance to experience first hand the amount of support that the Mike Pero group provides, and the sense of teamwork that exists amongst its real estate members. Mike Pero Richmond and Nel-son are always looking for new listings in all price ranges. If you want real estate agents who know what they’re doing, both in marketing and selling your property, you need to talk to Craig and Kellie and the team today. You can contact them at the office on 544 4634.

When Andrea Lee’s son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, she didn’t know who to turn to. But she soon found a local support network called Parent to Parent, and has found their help invaluable ever since.Last week was Parent to Parent’s aware-ness week, and like Andrea, many families in Nelson have found great support and friendship in their services. The nation-wide non-for-profit organisation offers guidance and support for families who have a child with a disability or health im-pairment.Andrea’s 11 year old son, Andre, who at-tends Nelson Central School, was three

years old when he was diagnosed with fragile X syndrome, which is a genetic con-dition which causes learning disabilities and cognitive impairment. “I used to call him my dream baby,” says Andrea. "But then he started missing his milestones. We got referred to a paediatri-cian and genetic screening revealed what was happening."“I felt pretty lost and was aware I needed to find out what was available in the commu-nity. I saw an advertisement in the paper for a Parent to Parent coffee group meet-ing, so I went along and haven’t looked back since.”Andrea still attends the monthly coffee

group, which provides parents with friend-ship, support, and local on-the-ground in-formation on their child’s condition. “It re-ally is a different experience raising a child with special needs,” says Andrea, who also has a 13 year old daughter. “Here I found another group of parents who got what I was going through. It didn’t work with my other friends as they had no idea what I was experiencing. Meeting these families was like a lifesaver.”Andrea went on to complete some of Par-ent to Parent’s free courses, such as advo-cacy support, renew workshops and sup-port parent training. She then became the Nelson chairperson for five years before

stepping down to be on the national board, which she has done for the past three years. Parent to Parent are not just about coffee groups either, they organise family events, a mum's pamper weekend, and speakers who come and give up-to-date informa-tion on the sector. They also offer support to siblings, who often find the process just as tough, through a programme called Sib-SupportNZ.“It can be so hard and overwhelming, and Parent to Parent can make the journey a bit easier. We are just a phone call away.”Anyone interested in Parent to Parent can contact Andrea on 021 044 6299, or visit www.parent2parent.org.nz.

Q: My son is in year 12 and wants to study in Wellington in 2017. He is likely to get the full Student Allowance of $211; but it doesn’t seem like enough to live on. What other income options does my son have?

A: Planning ahead for the costs of university study is a very good idea:

Write up a budget of his likely costs of living when in Wellington

Calculate the living cost shortfall (which could be around $200 per week)

Explore local options for study so he could live at home

Consider staying with family, or going flatting instead of a hall of residence

Save money he has earned from working, while he is still at school

Apply for scholarships Consider a working gap-year so he can save for

While the cold winter months tend to be a time of so-cial hibernation for us, spring offers the perfect chance to get out and about and enjoy ourselves. Being part of a club is a great way to meet new people, share your

skills or learn new skills alongside others who have the same interests. Sometimes it can be hard to think of a group to join and even harder to find a way of con-tacting them. Clubs can also find it hard to attract new members, which is why Nelson Weekly has gathered a selection of local clubs that want to meet you. Take some time to learn about the different groups you could be a part of and see if any of them take your fancy.

If the thought of taking up Rock and Roll dancing has ever passed through your mind, then you should talk to the Sun City Rockers. The group loves to dance, social-ise and keep fit, and everyone is welcome to join them for a spin around the dance floor. The Sun City Rockers aim to offer members the chance to participate in both competitive and social dance environments in Nelson.

Their gatherings take place at Club Waimea and in-clude Saturday night dances, beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons, which are held every Tuesday, after which all members can join together for a social

dance at 8pm. The club also organises visits to other Rock and Roll clubs around the country and takes part in national events. If you want to enjoy good music from the 50s, good company and the chance to strut your stuff, then visit the club’s website at www.rocknrollnelson.org.nz for a list of contacts.

Do you want to lose your fear of public speak-ing, or become a better com-municator? Then POWERtalk Waimea can help. Being a

friendly club, POWERtalk members are able to learn the art of speaking in an environment that is supportive and wel-coming, no matter what their age, gender or profession. The club also welcomes people who have English as their second language, although an intermediate level of English is required. Through POWERtalk’s professionally de-signed, self-paced programme, you can increase your confidence and leadership abilities, improve your organizational skills, improve your listening skills, learn to think on your feet and express your-self clearly. The POWERtalk group meets on the first

and third Wednesday of each month, from 7pm at 360 Annesbrook Dr in Stoke. The group is always keen to meet and help new people, so for more information give them a call on 03 5447823 or visit their website at www.powertalknelson1.wordpress.com

Re-discover the joy of singing with Nelson Civic Choir. We are a friendly, 60-strong choir for men and women, and there’s no audition to join.

We’ve been part of the Nelson scene for over 100 years, so you may already have enjoyed our concerts: now it’s time to join in! We mainly sing the well-loved choral works, but sometimes we branch out – as in our recent Broadway concert. Come and hear Haydn’s Creation on Sat-urday 22nd August, 7.00pm at Old St John’s, then join us to sing Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man in October. Our con-ductor this year is Chris Lukies, and our choir secretary is Gretchen Howard – please contact her for more information on [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in the au-dience on 22nd August - Creation is one of the loveliest pieces in the choral reper-toire - and then singing with you in the choir!

Located in the Tahunanui Reserve the Nelson Roller Sports Club is the place to go for roller skating fun and serious competition. Home to Nelson Whalers Inline Hockey, Sirens of Smash Roller Derby, Nelson Speed Skating and Nelson Artistic there is always something exciting happening at the rink. Ours is a supportive atmosphere where skaters of all ages and abilities may participate in many disciplines without judgment. Ex-pert coaches help skaters meet personal goals from cas-ual skating with friends to international competition against the world’s best. Non-members are also wel-come! Open to the public on Friday nights, weekends, and during school and public holidays, the Rink is al-

ways buzzing with kids and adults having fun while get-ting great exercise. Hire skates include artistic, speed, quad and inlines (rollerblades) to cater to all skating interests. Contact us today - we love to skate and en-courage you to give it a go!

The Nelson Softball Association aims to provide play-ers with a safe, fun and friendly environment, while also developing top class athletes, officials and coaches. With a centralised playing venue located at Saxton Sta-dium, the softball facilities are regularly full of players and supporters on a Saturday, thanks to a number of teams enjoying the sport.

Mahana School pupils have uncovered some fascinating historic items, including a teacher’s handbook that explains the finer points of corporal punishment, as they continue their search for the three time capsules buried somewhere in the school grounds. The school has been searching for the time capsules so that they can display their contents at the school’s centenary celebrations to be held from September 11 to 13. Although their search has so

far been unsuccessful, principal Justin Neal says the attic of the school’s oldest classroom, built in 1920, is proving to be a goldmine. One of the more interesting finds has been a booklet titled ‘By-Laws of Education in the District of Nelson 1932.’ Justin says the children have been fascinated by the section on corporal punishment which informs teachers, in great detail, when and how to administer the strap.“It says the teacher has to be fair

about using the strap because if it is used too much it indicates their discipline is too weak. It also says that senior girls can only be strapped in private and not in front of the rest of the class - it’s been very educational for the kids to learn about this.”Justin says they have also found an old valve radio, ink-wells that students used to dip their pens

into for writing, old certificates, two shields and lots of photos.Justin says the radio was “so old the kids didn’t even know what it was,” although he joked that “if you showed them a cassette player they wouldn’t know what that was, either”. The shields were for the Boys’ 220 Yards and Girls’ Skipping and dated back to 1917, two years after the school started. In the meantime, Justin says they will intensify their search for the time capsules.

“The kids are desperate to find them. From what I can gather there are three of them - one was buried in the 1960s and another at the 75th anniversary in 1975, and a third at some uncertain time under the old cobb hut that used to be here.“We will keep making inquiries in the community to try and find out if anyone knows where they were buried. There are still two or three families here that had grandparents at the school, so they might know something.”

By Tim O’Connell

While the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival.

Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.

Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.

Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her.

“Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said.

With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out.

Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female.

For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.

The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,

Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said.

Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.

The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom.

The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-

tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.

The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river.

The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-

dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-

tors and not just professional ath-

letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says.

“There was a good long queue eve-

rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.”

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry.

“We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”

The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

torhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer

to help promote its cause and raise some money, the

man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World

War 2 veteran.Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still

plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a

Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers

for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-

thritis.Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active

life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu

swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard.

“But I only save the ladies,” he joked.

Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol

station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-

nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-

ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers

could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity

receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-

motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so

wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered

a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow

along, but when people respond you feel good.”

Noisy plane’s 6am landingA noisy New Zealand Post aeroplane is ex-

pected to land in Nelson at 6am every day

for at least three weeks, which could wake

people from their sleep, admits Nelson

Airport Ltd.NZ Post will bring its mail from the North

Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-

ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at

6am and its noise will have a “noticeable”

impact. But the 6am landing is much better than

3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys

in and the time they had proposed to land

in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am

will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

would be inundated with calls wondering

what was going on,” says Kaye.

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The

changed schedule will have a significant

impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow

on effect through the distribution and de-

livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-

erator has been so willing to co-operate for

the benefit of local residents.”

The first early morning landing is expected

to be on April 7.

It wasn't quite a case of slow and steady wins the race, but Nelson rider Chris Heywood showed that consistency and enthusiasm count when he won the Ray White Winter Road Cycling series A grade title on Saturday.Chris wasn't the fastest rider in the 11-race series that concluded with a race around the Hope circuit on Saturday - that honour went to former Olympic road cyclist Robin Reid who won five of the sixes races he contested. Although Chris only had one win in the series, he took the A grade title with 93 points, 25 more than Robin, after racing consist-ently in the nine rounds he started. Chris Sharland was third on 61 points, finishing just ahead of Saturday's winner Hayden Squance on 59. B grade went down to the wire with Henry Kersten winning three races to finish on 106 points and edge out Brent Sturm on 92. Owen Hoggard won C grade ahead of Mark Goodall while Peter Harris won D grade. The women's competition was won by promising Nayland College student Emma Bateup, who is still in her first season of racing. Emma recorded 70 points racing in C grade to head off Jessica Hughes on 70 points and Suzie Wood on 60, with Georgia Cowman fourth and veteran Ann Rigg fifth on 49.The series was a family affair for many riders with race sponsor Brent Sturm competing against his son Jacob in B grade while his wife Tracey and daughter Sarah contested D grade. Christine van Hoppe and her husband Karl, daughter Karen, son-in-law Dean and granddaughter Shaane also raced in the series, which attracted 125 riders.

Broadgreen Intermediate re-ceived an A+ for sporting achievement in last week's Winter Tournament, winning five of the 17 titles contested by 1240 athletes from 14 schools across Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay and Buller. The annual tournament was held in Nelson on Thursday and Friday, with basketball, netball, rippa rugby, table ten-nis, hockey and volleyball at Saxton Field, rugby at Green-meadows and Broadgreen In-termediate and soccer at Neale Park. Broadgreen won the girls basketball, A and C netball, mixed rippa rugby and rugby, while Nelson Prep won the boys' volleyball."It's one of the biggest inter-mediate tournaments in the country," one of the organisers, Broadgreen's Paul Johnstone, says. "It's always held in Nelson and the three intermediate schools

take turns to run it."One of the big advantage about having it here is that we can have a lot of the sports at one place. That means it's far more social and the kids can in-teract and go and support their friends in the other teams"

Paul says the tournament ran smoothly and they were lucky to finish all the sports just be-fore the weather deteriorated on Friday afternoon.

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

with

Last week, dawnbreakers members Dan Fisher, Reid Forrest, Michael Stump and crew, headed out wide from Westport in search of bluefin tuna that are known to be attracted around the fleet of large offshore hoki fishing boats - carefully pick-ing the right weather forecast for an overnight trip out off the West Coast approximately 50 nautical miles. This is a must, with a bar cross-ing and also be-ing so far offshore where the fishing grounds are. We left at 7:30pm from the ramp at Westport and, on the way out, the crew sorted the 60kg of hoki baits and chum we had onboard. The tuna can be up to the 300kg mark, so big gear was used. One rod with 37kg line and a 400 pound leader had the hoki bait attached to it.Upon arriving at the fleet of offshore boats and making contact with each skipper to make sure it was okay for us to be fishing close by, we soon had baits in the water. This consisted of a dead bait with a

handful of chum and letting it sink for about five minutes, before mov-ing back up on the fleet and doing it all again. The weather was good for out that wide, but still a chop with a very cold wind that meant you needed very warm waterproof gear on.We had a charter boat close by that hooked up to a 252kg tuna, which

was hugely impressive to see the power of these fish, peeling line of the reel and snapping the rod back and forth. Top effort to these guys for landing the fish of that size.We fished all night and the next morning before the long trip back into port.We didn't manage to hook up a tuna this trip, so we will be planning to do it all again next hoki season.

Competition is tight in the Collegiate 1 grade of Nelson Netball as, after four rounds, four teams – Nelson College for Girls 9A, Nayland 9A, Waimea 9A and Waimea 10C - were unbeaten and tied on 16 points. The teams met at Saxton Courts on Saturday and while Nay-land and Waimea 9A fought tooth and nail they could not be separated at the final whis-tle, when the score was 27 all.It was a very different story game in the second game be-tween Nelson 9A and Waimea 10C. Five unanswered goals by Nelson midway through the first quarter put the writing on the wall that they would be dif-ficult to contain, and they went into the first break with a 9–4 advantage.Waimea’s shooters Rose Miller and Emma Eggers were on tar-get and had the perfect record of four from four, however they lacked opportunity as posses-sion was often lost before the ball got to the offensive circle.Nelson’s was an all round team effort, however goal attack Chloe Webb was definitely the star performer. She was quick off the line, was the dominant shooter (converting 21 from

26) and was the master of the double play in the circle for the closer shot. Not only did Chloe run the show in the shoot-ing circle, she donned the GD bib for the final quarter and impressed with her defensive skills. While Waimea’s Rebekah Irvine had the inevitable task of marking Chloe, she could be well-pleased with efforts.Nelson continued to build their tally while restricting Waimea to single figures in each of the four quarters. Nelson’s goal shoot Josie Ripley had a tidy game when she converted 18 from 21, however better angles would see more ball delivered to her by her feeders. Sarah

Vuillermin was a revelation at wing defence when she was introduced at half time. She pressured every pass and was rewarded with five clean inter-cepts. Saphire Collins was di-versity personified, as she wore three different bibs and gained numerous deflections. With a convincing 44-19 vic-tory, Nelson are now sitting at the top of the grade with 20 points, Nayland and Waimea are tied on 18.What did impress me was young umpire Katelyn Gar-diner, who finished playing for Nayland 9A only to pick up her whistle to umpire her peers. Katelyn did an excellent job.

and building Richard (Dick) Jones. Donated by the Day Family, Marsden House Trust. Dedicated on 25th August 2007.

Nelson’s rich history of characters, conflicts and celebrations is detailed

in this third volume of stories featuring discovery and survival,

heartbreak and triumph. These stories are about real people in real

situations and in some cases the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Whether you are picking this up for just a quick read, or are reading

from cover to cover, enjoy Snippets of History as a small glimpse

years later they had 79 girls and 99 boys. Legal reasons for the desig-nation of orphans included being destitute, vagrant, uncontrollable, living in a disreputable place or guilty of punishable offences.

ROSOMAN JAMie LeN

It is with deep sadness that I announce Jamie’s passing on Wednesday 12 August 2015 at Nelson Hospital. He was an extremely brave man who fought the battle of his life with dignity, hope, strength and trust. He fought to the very end, trying to keep his mind and body active.RIP Jamie, you deserve peace. You earned it gallantly.Thank you for all the knowledge you shared with me. You were a mountain of knowledge on nearly every subject.Jamie was cremated last Friday after being driven for his final ride in his beloved retired ambulance, past our home then onto the crematorium, with his favourite songs blasting. He is survived by his three children, Steven, Aleasha and Mikayla.A memoriam for Jamie will be held at his home at 1.00pm on Wednesday 19 August at 45 Bishop-dale Rd and everyone is welcome.Go in peace my love, I will never forget you.Lianne.
