Fishing fleet blessed ahead of hoki seasonThe sun may have been out but the wind was chilly, as thousands of people made their way down to the Sunderland Marine Pier to celebrate the annual Blessing of the Fleet cer-emony on Sunday. The event, postponed from Saturday due to rain, followed on from fire-works held on Friday night to mark the beginning of the fishing season. For the pet sitter looking to step up, $880,000 will not only get you a five acre lifestyle block in Spring Grove but also 45 dog kennels and 18 cat en-closures.Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Dot Kettle says that it’s definitely

a good time to be a business owner in Nelson. “There are lots of opportunities in our region, and Nelson business owners have some good things going for them,” she says. “We also have a proactive council who are committed to busi-nesses doing well.”She says that because Nelson is very seasonal, the winter

months can be difficult for hospitality and retail business, resulting in a high turnover of those sorts of businesses, which is what Nelson is experi-encing. “Our region has a rich history in people moving here to start a business. Businesses need to have a good plan, and expect the first one to three years to be challenging.”

Drivers on Salisbury Rd in Richmond had to avoid an unexpected obstacle last Friday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Drivers on Salisbury Rd in Richmond had to avoid an un-expected obstacle last Friday when a truck collecting rubbish also collected a street light pole, knocking it over the road.Fortunately, the only thing that was hurt as the metal pole crashed to the ground was the truck driver’s pride. Even more surprisingly, traffic flow was not too disrupted on Richmond’s busiest road be-

cause the pole created a bridge spanning over one lane of Salis-bury Rd, allowing cars to pass slowly underneath. The truck driver, with the help of a member of the public, was able to pull the pole to the side of the road before the Rich-mond Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived to clean up. A new, $10,000 driver-feedback solar-powered speed sign was also flattened by the truck.

The demolition of the northern end of the Trafalgar Centre, as part of a $13 million upgrade of the city’s premier spectator venue, has been recommended to Nelson City Council. At a meeting in the council chambers on Thursday, coun-cillors heard a report presented by council project manager Richard Kirby, which recom-mended the demolition and then rebuild of the northern end of the centre, including the Victory Room, foyer and toilets. The centre was closed in De-cember 2013 after the council – which owns the building – deemed it a major risk to life in the event of a big earthquake.Richard says the report showed the current building was “brit-tle” in the event of an earth-quake, but that liquefaction would not be a major issue. The recommended option from the report would see $12.956 million spent on the centre, which would include the demolition and rebuild of the northern end, strengthen-ing work on the western edge

of the new southern end and $7 million worth of work to the main building.Currently around $10 million is set aside in the long term plan for the upgrade of the building. If that option was picked up by councillors this Thurs-day, it would mean the pro-posed northern end wouldn’t open until June next year, four months after the dead-line council put on the build-ing reopening earlier this year. Richard says the rest of the cen-tre could be opened, but with some disruption. To pull it down and build a new one on the same site would cost

around $25-$30 million, says Richard.Mayor Rachel Reese says she’s pleased more investigation work was done because the cost is a lot lower than the original estimates. “I think he [Rich-ard] summed it up well when he said essentially what we’re getting is a refurbished build-ing that will set us up for the next 50 years at half the price of what a new one would cost.”Nelson’s Gaire Thompson spoke from the public gallery and says too much time and money has been spent already.Councillors will make a deci-sion on the report this Thurs-day morning.

$13M to upgrade Trafalgar Centre

Nelson’s main events centre has been closed since December 2013. Councillors will vote on whether to accept a $13 million upgrade this week.

Ensure you’re on the right electricity plan. If you’re using less than 8000kw

of power a year, it’s cheaper to be on a low user plan. Use tools such as

whatsmynumber.org.nz to check you’re getting the best deal.

Switching off your old second fridge could save up to $300 annually.

Use the free energy from the sun to dry clothes on an outside line, instead of in an

electric dryer. You could save around $200 annually (and it costs nothing to do this).

Run your heat pump on the most effective settings and clean the

filter regularly to ensure it runs properly.

Change to energy saving light bulbs. A change of just 8 energy

saving bulbs equates to $150 savings per year.

Check your shower usage. If the water from it fills a bucket in less than a minute you could

save around $150 annually by changing to an efficient showerhead. Keep your showers

short – in a household of three, each extra minute of shower time costs about $80 annually.

Turning off appliances left on standby saves around $125 annually.

Washing your clothes in cold water rather than warm

water could save you $65 annually.

Stop heat escaping, and draughts, with DIY

double glazing and good thick curtains.

Buy energy efficient appliances. ENERGY STAR is awarded

to the top 25% most energy efficient products.

Check if it’s OK to use. Does it have a Council building permit or consent? Was

it installed before 2000? Burners installed before 2000 in some parts of Nelson

cannot be used or replaced with another wood burner.

Use Good Wood. This means dry wood with less than 25% moisture,

left long enough after cutting to dry out before using it.

Check for Council’s list of Good Wood suppliers www.nelson.govt.nz

(search word = Good Wood).

Use the right wood at the right time. Lighter wood like Pine or Douglas Fir is

good for kindling. Dense wood like Gum will burn longer and give more heat

once the fire is burning well.

Store your wood properly – split and stack in a criss-cross pattern for

good ventilation and keep in a covered, dry place.

Burning things like wet wood, plastic, rubbish or treated wood, is

banned. It can create toxic fumes and damage your burner.

STEP ONE for a good fire: When preparing to light your fire leave a bed of

ash, put scrunched newspaper in the bottom, add small bits of kindling, add

larger pieces of dry wood as fire catches hold.

STEP TWO for a good fire: Light newspaper in several places. Have air control fully

open to keep fire burning brightly, unless reloading you should keep the door closed.

STEP THREE for a good fire: Never use the door to force wood

into burner – it could break the glass.

STEP FOUR for a good fire: Look after your burner – follow the

manufacturer’s operation and safety instructions. Clean your flu every

autumn and replace any damaged parts.

10 TIPS FOR REDUCING YOUR POWER BILL

House Fire on Tasman St: Firefighters booted down the door of a Tasman St home last Tuesday morning after a fan heater caught fire in the bedroom area of the house. Three fire trucks attended the blaze at the house, owned by The Prince Albert Backpackers and Bar owner Naiane De-nardin, at around 8am. Senior Station Officer Craig Davies says the crew used a high pressure hose to contain the fire inside the small house very quickly.

Dolphins visit Nelson: Four small dolphins were photographed happily swimming in Nelson Haven off Tahu-nanui beach on Friday morning. Nelson man Chris Ratcliffe says he was in an inflatable boat with two young children that morning when he came across the dolphins. “I thought I saw some the other day but this time we definitely did. I had my phone with me so was able to get a few photos.” He says the boat was borrowed off a mate and the two six year-olds were thrilled to see the dolphins play. “They were pretty happy, they loved it.”

Fire breaks out in block of flats: Four fire crews were called to a block of flats in Churchill Ave in Rich-mond at around 5.45 on Friday night. The middle flat of three was alight. Firefighters had the fire under control by around 6.30pm. A neighbour living two doors down, who did not wish to be named, says she was alerted to the fire by the noise it created. “It started with an explosion and it was fast.” She says she had spoken with the occu-pants of the rear flat to make sure they were okay. “There was smoke damage in back but I’m not sure about the front. It didn’t look good,” she says. “The fire has affected two families plus [the oc-cupant’s] own.” The fire is not being treated as suspi-cious.

Body of missing man pulled from riv-er: A body, identified as missing Nelson man Murray Teece, was found in a van in the Waimea River on Saturday night. A search was stepped up Saturday afternoon with the police nation-al dive squad called in to scour the Waimea and Appleby rivers. The 73 year old was reported missing on Friday after failing to turn up to work in the morning. Mr Teece was last seen leaving his home at Hope for work.

Stoke gets a history lesson from coun-cil: Four new information panels have been installed in Kane Lane in Stoke, between Benge and Co and Squires. The panels each focus on one aspect of the suburbs history, from the origins and planning of Stoke to its businesses and pastimes. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says, al-though she has no historical connec-tion to the city, she loves learning about Nelson’s history. “As we look around Stoke the heritage left by people is still here,” she says. “It’s quite magnificent when you think about all that change over a short amount of time.” Initially, the area was made up of streams and swamp land before roads were built and rocks were cleared to make way for the first community buildings and houses.

Contaminated slipway to be cleaned upPort Nelson’s Calwell Slip site has been contaminated by chemicals used in boat maintenance since the 1970s, but new funding, announced by the government on Saturday, will allow for plans to be made to deal with the chemicals. Environment Minister Nick Smith says the government will provide $200,000 worth of funding to the Port Company as part of a partnership with them and the Nelson City Council. “Nelson has an incredibly rich history of boat maintenance and we want to maintain that.” He says, although the chemicals found in the slip are not harmful to public health, he is worried about contamination spreading further into the harbour. The chemicals that will be cleaned up are both copper and TPP [Tributyltin]. Tributyltin was used as a surface coating to reduce the growth of weed and other organisms on ship hulls and was

discontinued during the 1990’s, although residual levels may still be present on some older vessels. Port Nelson CEO Martin Byrne says the port are matching the government’s funding and actual decontamination work will most likely begin during the 2016 and 2017 financial year. The Calwell Slipway has been in operation since 1970 and is the third largest slipway in New Zealand. It is now managed so that all contaminated material from ship maintenance is collected, avoiding further contamination.

Students suffered serious burns, multiple lacerations and bruising at Garin College last week but still came out of the classroom smiling. That’s because none of the injuries were real with the 20 school-aged students spending last Tuesday learning about gory special effects in a horror-makeup workshop, as part of the Ministry of Inspiration’s school holiday programme. A Nelson woman has made the fi-nals of the World of WearableArts awards for the first time after two previous knock backs, and says her success is a “long time coming”.Claire Bywater is just one of seven designers from the Nelson region to be selected to appear on stage in this year’s show, which is now in its 28th year. Of the 128 garments selected to take part in the awards show, half are from international designers.Claire, 51, and her creation “Dreams of McQueen,” has been six years in the making, and is in-spired by the late fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. “The idea has been in my head since I fell in love with paper mache. I thought it would be fun to combine hard materials with fabric for a crazy take on the red carpet fashion world,” says Claire. “Alexander McQueen used really unexpected materials in his avant garde work and had groundbreak-ing ideas.“I can’t think how many hours

in total have gone into this and I probably don’t want to. It becomes something of an obsession and the families of the WOW entrants should probably have their own support group.”Claire, who has previously taught at the Design and Arts College of New Zealand, says that she first heard about WOW while taking art classes in Christchurch, and she first entered back in 1999 with no success. She tried again in 2012 and her creation had some positive feedback, but ultimately still wasn’t selected. “After a shift to Nelson and some time off from teaching, there was something I had to do - have one more go at getting into WOW.”Claire says she is feeling relieved to have finally been selected. “When the email arrived, I was home alone and in total disbelief as I’d readied myself for bad news. I had to read it over and again and then phoned my husband, children and friends, by which time it was sinking in,” she says. “I cannot wait to go to Wellington with my family and cel-ebrate being part of the show.”

The men finally have their shed – but they’ll have to prove their worth with the building needing plenty of work before it will be ready to house their tools.Menzshed Whakau has been searching for a suitable community shed where woodworkers, metalworkers and handymen can create together. The year-long search ended this month when Habitat for Humanity offered a shed at the back of their new Re-Store on Quarantine Rd, which is due to open in early September. The Richmond-based Menzshed Waimea has been running for four years and has been a huge success, with many retired men coming down to make the most of the tools and space and being able to pass on their knowledge to younger members. Its chairman, Philip Chapman, is also a committee member of the Nelson version and he says it does take time to get established. “It took four or five of us sitting around for a year and a half hoping, and all of a sudden a shed is there and we had 150 members.”He says 40 of those members are from Nelson and he believes many will be keen to get involved in the new shed.Menzshed Whakatu chairman Graeme O’Brien says they’re delighted to have been offered the space, but admitted it will take some work to get up to scratch.

“It’s fantastic, and to come in with Habitat for Humanity is a perfect fit. As we progress and get on our feet we’ll really help each other out. We’ll have to do it up, but if we can’t do up our own shed, what sort of men are we?”The shed is slightly smaller than the Richmond shed but does have a sizeable yard and some of that is under cover. Graeme thinks it will take around six months for the walls to be lined, roof fixed and power fitted. At that stage the shed will be secure and open to accept donated tools.Habitat for Humanity Nelson chairman

Rob Silcock says they were happy to offer the space, because like Menzshed, they’re “beggars”. “The way I look at it is that we’re two beggars and we’re helping each other out. They’ve got a huge task to get that shed up and running, it’s not a gimme by any means. But it’s somewhere where they can go with parking, yard space, and once they get it fixed it will be a roof over their heads and lockable.”Graeme says the group will be hosting its AGM at Lambretta’s Café on July 26 at 4pm. He encourages anyone interested to come along.

A new charity is hoping to give Nelson’s abused children some small comfort, with a “Trauma Teddy”.Tedz Project started in the Bay of Plenty in 2012 but has since spread throughout the country, including Nelson. The project collects donated teddy bears, blankets, torches, colouring books and notepads, and puts them together in “snuggle packs”. They are then given to police to give to children going through the forensic examina-tion process, which is where abused children need to give evidence about their abuse.Beth Hunter saw the charity online and contacted them to say she would like to help. That led to her setting up the Nelson

branch and attracting a group of ladies to help deliver the project.Last year in Nelson, there were 75 cases where children were interviewed by a forensic ex-aminer. Beth says they’re after dona-tions of a soft toy, torch, note-book and pen, colouring books and crayons and blankets. All donations must be new and will then be sorted by volun-teers. “We’re relying on getting enough donations and then we’ll be able to have workshops where our volunteers will come together and put the packs to-gether.”Beth says the first packs will be delivered next month.Drop off points are at Eco-moon, Elim Church and INP Medical Centre.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries

Q: I am worried that my Mum has been caught up in an internet dating scam. What are the tell-tale signs?

A: Online dating scams are fairly common, even here in Nelson. Hundreds of Kiwi’s are conned every year. Watch out for these tell-tale signs:

Poor or vague communication: Emails may be vague or use poor grammar or spelling.

Details that don’t add up: Details that don’t make much sense or conflict with other information.

Stereotyped profiles: Women who are: attractive, mixed ethnicity, about 31 years, christian, looking for 58-year old male. Men who are: professional (eg. engineer), work overseas, about 46 years, looking for female 38-58 years.

Taking you off the site: It’s always safer to chat through the site.

Asking for money: Scammers build trust over several weeks or months then ask for money due to some sort of crisis. The moment someone asks for money, you should end contact with them- no matter the crisis.

Contact us for free, confidential budget advice. Send any questions to [email protected]

Never send money. Don’t be taken in, no matter what the reason, or how plausible or sad it sounds.

Ford Club to celebrate founder’s birthdayTrue-blue Nelsonians have a good excuse to take their pride and joys for a spin this Sunday, when the Nelson Classic Ford Club hold its annual cruise out to Rabbit Island to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. For Stoke’s Lorraine McKenzie it will be a family affair, with her son and daughter also owning Fords. Lorraine helped start the club back in 2002 with her kids.“An old guy advertised wanting a Cortina club but there weren’t enough in Nelson to get one going. At the time my son had a Cortina, my daughter had a Zephyr and I had a Mustang, so we thought, ‘why don’t we start a Ford club?’”Lorraine’s Mustang could also be the oldest

in the country. She says it was manufactured in March 1964 and the car was launched the following month. While the Mustang is her pride and joy, she admits it isn’t that nice to drive. “I’ve only been around Nelson in it because it is hard to drive, but I love it and I’ve always loved cars and loved Fords.”The founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, was born on July 30, 1863, and every year the club invites all Ford owners to attend the birthday celebrations. Sunday’s event will be a good opportunity to inspect some of the best Fords in the Nelson region. Cars will need to be set up at Rabbit Island by 10 am, with the public viewing from about 11 am to 2.30 pm.Lorraine McKenzie of Stoke in her 1964 ½ Ford Mustang. Photo: Andrew Board.

Wedding dress doing the roundsAndrew Board

When Donna Hippolite got married, her husband Sam was dying and the wedding had to be moved forward to beat his funeral. Two years on Sam’s still going strong and Donna decided to pass on her “lucky dress” to another bride – for free. She put her dress on the Facebook page “Pay it Forward Nelson” and said “it’s free for a budding bride.” She then chose from the people replying and earlier this month the dress was used for its second wedding. That same dress is now being passed on to a third bride and Donna says the positive response to it encouraged her to start a register of free wedding

dresses.“I just thought ‘hang on a minute, there’s so many people out there who can’t afford to get married and people have dresses sitting there, let’s do something’.”Since Friday, Donna has had various wedding and flower girl dresses donated to be “paid forward”. Donna says everyone deserves to feel special on their wedding day but for a lot of people a dress is just too expensive. She says anyone who would like to donate their wedding dresses can call her on 027 484 7737.

Tahuna’s Donna Hippolite gave away her wedding dress via a local Facebook page. Left is Donna and her husband Sam on their wedding day.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancers, Tuesday, July 7: Sun City Rockers members Clara Jones, Cindy Verry, Deb Corbett and Andrew Aldridge, struck success at the South Island Interclub Rock’n’Roll Challenge last weekend in Christchurch. Clara and Cindy were competing together and were awarded third in the Best Dressed category and first place in their open same-sex section, while Deb and Andrew got first place in the novice section. While Cindy and Clara unfortunately didn’t qualify for nationals, they are looking forward to trying again next year.

Newcomers to Nelson, Tuesday, July 7: The Nelson Newcomer’s Network hosted a successful evening at Rhythm and Brown on Wednesday, July 8. The event saw around 15 people turn up to socialise and network with others who are also new to the area, although the event is also open to existing residents who want to meet new people. Organisers say the event has really grown, with earlier meetings only attracting a few people.

Bella is the most popular dog name, do you have pets with weird names:

My chickens are Mr Reddington, Broomhilda and Teriyaki.

Janelle Thorpe.

Our two chocolate labradoodles are Boston and Dublin.... Named

after our two fav cities, one where my hub-by proposed to me, Boston, and the other our first holiday together, Dublin. Bossy and Dubby. Kathy Pantling.

Our birds have odd names. We have citrus, swift, caps, Davis, Tye,

Ringo, spice and cheeky chopsticks. Karen Carey.

Foggy morning makes driving hard:I couldn't believe how many people were driving in this with no lights

on - I estimate 40 per cent of the drivers I saw on my drive from home in Stoke to work in Richmond didn't have their lights on. Makes it bloody hard for people pull-ing out from driveways or side roads to see you. Common sense people. Mind you that's not so common any more. Tania Preston Brunell.

Was hard to see the twit on foot and wearing black who did the

mad dash across the road in front on me on Main Rd Stoke by Bunnings, at 7am this morning, too. Bloody womble. Megan Walsh.

Parking wardens for Richmond Mall:If it stops people taking the piss, of course it's a good idea. The only

ones who are going to object are those exploiting it. Bit like those who complain

about CCTV, if you are doing nothing wrong, then what's your problem? Brian Gower.

The problem is most of them will be staff members

from inside the mall, and if they don't get to park there they fill up our bloody street across from the

mall. It makes it hard for us residents to drive in and out of our own street because there is not enough room for cars to park either side, nor for two cars to be able to pass each other. I think it is another rev-enue gathering exercise and a waste of bloody time. Dave Wastney.

Who needs 3 hours to do the shop-ping? Jeannette MacEwan.

Not necessarily to do the shopping, but if you have a hair appointment,

meet friends for lunch, do the shops and then the supermarket, 2 hours maybe not quite enough....I like that time extension! Ann Gallot.

Won't most the full day parkers be staff in the mall and over the

Kmart way, think about it there's a lot of staff out there. Revenue collecting to get the Tasman council out of the sh*t, more like. I am pretty sure people wouldn't go and park all day at Richmond mall for no reason. Rebecca Thomson.

Trafalgar Centre plans shown:Well, if the intention is to replace

the Victory Room and the toilets, I suggest that they be built to the eastern side of the main hall area, then removed completely to allow room for the Southern Link road to go round that corner to link up with the bridge and highway. The current facilities and hall could then continue to be used for some events until the new extension is fin-ished. Carol Stewart.

What a waste of money. Mike Roberts.

Who can know what to believe now? I'm tempted to wonder if there isn't a certain amount of face-saving going on - expensively. And perhaps after all this muckin' about, Mr Rainey will get his be-loved performing arts centre... after all, it's the public purse they're so eagerly raiding so anything becomes possible. Like Gaire Thompson, I'm "concerned". Jim Mitchell.

Callers to Nelson City Council:I have always found them to be re-ally helpful on the phone or when I

go in. Karma Cannock.

By Tim O’ConnellWhile the rest of the South

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival. Bands, performances and the

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her. “Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said. With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard. “But I only save the ladies,” he joked.Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-ers. NZ Post will bring its mail from the North Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at 6am and its noise will have a “noticeable” impact. But the 6am landing is much better than 3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys in and the time they had proposed to land in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they weren’t willing to have such an impact on locals during the middle of the night.“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we would be inundated with calls wondering what was going on,” says Kaye. “After discussions with the operator it was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

The changed schedule will have a significant impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow on effect through the distribution and de-livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-erator has been so willing to co-operate for the benefit of local residents.”The first early morning landing is expected to be on April 7.

Rex McDowall has left big shoes to fill at the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and will be remembered for his infectious passion for geckos and skinks. The former co-ordinator of the lizard monitoring programme died last month, leaving behind the efforts he spearheaded years earlier. Sanctuary General Manager Hudson Dodd says Rex will be sorely missed by all the sanctuary team. “Rex was a stalwart volunteer of the sanctuary. He was a very level-headed and calm individual in the face of the exasperating task of finding lizards.” With a background as a private eye, Rex

also helped to install the security systems that protect the sanctuary. Two years ago, Jeff Bryant, a science teacher at Nayland College, spent six months at the Sanctuary alongside Rex attempting to monitor the highly-evasive Maitai Naultinus Stellatus green forest gecko after receiving a Royal Society Fellowship. Looking for one of the endemic geckos is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The Stellatus gecko is only just ‘hanging in’, waiting for protection at the Brook Sanctuary. It is hoped the numbers will increase with the possibility of establishing a future breeding programme for the species.

Geckos are a favourite for collectors of endangered species to steal. The Brook

Waimarama Sanctuary has a map detailing the GPS sightings of the rare geckos, but is keeping it secret. During the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, a gang of poachers was travelling around New Zealand in a camper van with a list of GPS points detailing where rare lizards and geckos had been sighted. The Brook was on their list.In 2012, a German reptile poacher was jailed for trying to smuggle rare native geckos out of New Zealand. All New Zealand lizards are protected by law. They must not be kept or captured without a permit issued by the Department of Conservation

James and Neil Simpson are passionate about guns and are enthusiastic about providing quality products and services to like minded people.

First Birthday CelebrationThis Saturday - Come and join the party

It’s The Gun Shop’s birthday this Saturday and you’re invited to join the party. They may be celebrating a year in business but Neil, Isabel and James Simpson swear it doesn’t feel like it. After opening The Gun Shop Motueka in July last year, there are a few words they would use to describe the experience of jointly owning their first shop: hectic, chaotic, busy and fran-

tic being just a few of them, but don’t think they haven’t en-joyed every single minute of it. They have. It has been a blast!!The father and son team have a passion for guns that just can’t be beaten and this was the driving force that led them to establish The Gun Shop on Mo-tueka’s main street. Both Neil and James have accumulated a number of years’ experience and are now using their exten-

sive knowledge to help keen hunters from a store they can call their own – a store that has gun enthusiasts solely in mind. Neil previously owned a gun shop in England for five years before he came out to New Zealand. Whilst in the UK Neil lead a lifestyle most hunt-ers would be keen to have and one that has given him a lot of skills and knowledge that he is more than happy to pass on to

his customers here. James also has a wealth of knowl-edge regarding firearms. Hav-ing been born “with a gun in his hand” it is not surprising he took up the sport of Clay Target Shoot-ing and has previously competed in two Oceania and World com-petitions. With Neil’s 45 years’ experience around guns, and the two lads proficiency in everything from clay shooting to hunting and pis-tol shooting, and Isabel’s support and hard work in the office, any

hunter/shooter will be more than satisfied with what The Gun Shop Motueka has to offer. Many have already had a taste of all that is available at The Gun Shop Motueka, whether they are customers new to the store or returning customers who just can’t get enough of the friendly, knowledgeable advice that Neil and James consistently provide. Customers have travelled from as far afield as Blenheim, the West Coast, Christchurch and even the North Island to deal with The Gun

Shop Motueka for their shoot-ing needs. Their Facebook page is full of positive reviews and Neil be-lieves it’s their “great custom-er service, knowledge and the right prices” that have people impressed. Meeting like-minded people was always one of the draw cards to owning the store and Neil and James say it has been great talking to those as en-thusiastic as they are about shooting. Their relationship with many customers doesn’t stop when they walk out the door either. Neil and James have happily taken their cus-tomers out shooting expedi-

tions. Whether it’s helping them improve their skills at clay shooting or coaching first timers, for the boys, it’s all about setting people up for a successful shooting experi-ence. As well as being practical, hands on shooters with a li-brary of knowledge and ad-vice, Neil and James also stock a huge range of qual-ity products for the hunter or gun man. In store you’ll find guns from Browning, Howa, Marlin, Remington and Ru-ger, ADI gun powder, Federal, Hornady and Norma ammu-nition and a range of other brands including Ridgeline,

Buck knives, Tasco and Bush-nell scopes and binoculars, Swarovski scopes and Nikon and Vortex optics. They’re a one stop shop, of-fering other services such as a re-loading bench for custom-ers to use, gun repairs and servicing, and fitting scopes – basically the whole nine yards when it comes to guns. The Gun Shop Motueka is a unique feature in the Tasman region because unlike other stores, it specialises solely in firearms and ammunition meaning Neil and James can focus on what really matters to them and their customers. Whether you’re a seasoned

hunter or a beginner looking for a full kit out and plenty of advice, you won’t find a better service or range of products. Neil and James would like to thank all of their customers and suppliers for their sup-port throughout the last year. To celebrate a year as owners of The Gun Shop Motueka, Neil, Isabel and James will be offering a number of birthday specials across the store, for this Saturday only. These include thermal and night vision optics from Yu-kon Optics, New Zealand Ammunition Company Lim-ited will be offering a Forbes rifle and Swarovski scope

Noisy plane’s 6am landingA noisy New Zealand Post aeroplane is ex-

pected to land in Nelson at 6am every day

for at least three weeks, which could wake

people from their sleep, admits Nelson

Airport Ltd.NZ Post will bring its mail from the North

Island to Nelson for three to four weeks in

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

Still a volunteer at 94 years oldWhen Arthritis New Zealand needed a local volunteer

to help promote its cause and raise some money, the

man to put his hand up was a 94 year old World

War 2 veteran.

Maurice Abrahams is a legend in Nelson. He still

plays in the Nelson Brass Band, has served as a

Freemason for more than 70 years and volunteers

for Arthritis NZ after developing two forms of ar-

thritis.Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active

life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu

swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard.

“But I only save the ladies,” he joked.

Last week he and Sue spent two hours at Z petrol

station in Halifax St, where he worked as a “commu-

nity concierge” washing windows and greeting custom-

ers. He handed out orange tokens which his customers

could use to vote for Arthritis NZ and help the charity

receive cash from Z, through its Good in the Hood pro-

motion. Maurice says he got relief from his treatment so

wanted to give back, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be offered

a job after his efforts. “Sue’s right into it and I just follow

along, but when people respond you feel good.”

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-

ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at

6am and its noise will have a “noticeable”

impact. But the 6am landing is much better than

3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys

in and the time they had proposed to land

in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am

will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

would be inundated with calls wondering

what was going on,” says Kaye.

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The

changed schedule will have a significant

impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow

on effect through the distribution and de-

livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-

erator has been so willing to co-operate for

the benefit of local residents.”

The first early morning landing is expected

to be on April 7.

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom.

The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-

tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river. The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-

dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-

tors and not just professional ath-

letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says. “There was a good long queue eve-

rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.” Tommy McDowell competes in the canoe

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry. “We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”

The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

torhomes at 442 Lower Queen St and Rod

says they have already been getting inquir-

ies from prospective customers.

If you’re aged 50 or older, then you’re eligible to join Grey Power, an organisation you’ve prob-ably heard of, but one whose complete role you may not fully understand. The voluntary organisation was established in 1986 by a group protesting against the imposi-tion of the surcharge on New Zealand Super-

annuation. The movement quickly spread from Auckland and further associations formed in other centres. Nelson Grey Power is one of these asso-ciations and also the largest in the country, with over 9500 members in the Nelson and Richmond district. Nelson Grey Power may be involved with political activism through its National Fed-eration, but they are far more than just a political lobby group. The multi-faceted as-sociation plays an important role, not only offering its members benefits such as dis-counts at certain retailers and service pro-viders, but directly assists those aged 50 and over through advisory, advocacy and educa-tion processes. As an association within the Grey Power Federation, Nelson Grey Power receives two votes at the organisation’s annual con-ference. These votes decide what the board does to fulfill the members’ wishes over the next year. Nelson Grey Power provides advocacy on behalf of its members with both the Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council, the DHB and government departments, with regular delegations to Wellington where they have direct access to the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers and other

members of parliament. This has been vi-tal for the success of many of their lobby-ing issues, such as lower doctors’ fees, lower pharmacy fees, improved regulation for rest-homes and the abolition of interest on student loans. Committee members are also in charge of portfolios, usually within their area of ex-pertise. These include council housing, road and transport, and health and well-being.

There are plenty of other reasons to be-come a member of Nelson Grey Power that can benefit people financially, especially if they are in retirement. All members re-ceive a Grey Power card that can be used at around 150 participating businesses to gain discounts. These businesses are listed in the Top of the South Discount Book. With an average discount of 10 per cent, businesses range from accommodation

providers, accountants, cafés, builders, electricians, health and beauty, medical practitioners, plumbers and travel servic-es. Participating businesses will also fea-ture a Grey Power sticker, showing their support for the association and identify-ing themselves for members. Grey Power is a national organisation and financial mem-bers can use their Grey Power card at any participating business through-out the country, including most Challenge service stations who of-fer members eight cents off every litre of fuel, from the first litre right up to 100 litres - perfect for filling up the boat or motorcaravan and, over a year, offering an impressive saving. Members of Nelson Grey Power receive immediate free life insurance coverage of $2000 in the case of accidental death, and by signing up to Grey Power electricity and bottled gas can also offer sizeable sav-

ings – in fact, the savings people make are generally more than enough to cover the yearly membership fee. Members wanting to take advantage of the association’s elec-tricity and gas plan can also rest assured that they will still receive their lines com-

pany dividend, if it is offered in their area, and Grey Power Electricity can guarantee they will protect peo-ple’s energy rates from increasing beyond the “Price Protection Rate” until March 31, 2019. To learn more

about the plan, have a look at the website at www.

greypowerelectricity.co.nz. A quarterly newsletter is published by the association, keeping members up to date with the goings-on of the association lo-cally and issues affecting its members. Presidents MessageWelcome to the first edition of our addi-tional way of contacting our members, also to those of you thinking of becoming mem-bers, as well as you readers who may not be aware of Nelson Grey Powers’ activities and benefits. At 2015 AGM we promised to bring positive action to our organisation and by taking this step we are hoping to show the public we are honouring that pledge. Are you noticing the rise in your power ac-counts? Now that we are in the throes of a cold winter have you thought of joining Grey Power Electricity? This is available to those who are members of Grey Power and is one method of reducing the cost of winter heating. On occasions Nelson Grey Power gets re-quests from various organisations around the region, we assist if we can but at all times we must adhere to our non political stance and keep away from controversial subjects as you will have supporters from either side and to support one side or the other would result in Grey Power being the loser. For more information and updates go to our website www.greypowernelson.org.nzRegards, Gordon Curry

Mobility is often something we take from grant-ed and when that ability is temporarily or per-manently affected, it’s good to know there are experts on hand to assist. Robin Jordan may not have started out in the mobility industry, but he’s a professional in all things mobility now. FAV Mobile Solutions Ltd is Richmond’s specialised car audio sales and installation centre, and the Nelson region’s specialists in mobility scooter sales and service. After leaving school, Robin began working for FAV, which stands for Fairbairns Audio and Visual, as an ap-prentice in 1975. Back then, the business ca-tered to television and radio repairs and in-stallations. In 1979, Robin and two other members of the FAV staff took over joint ownership of the busi-ness from Rob Fairburn, and in the last ten years Robin has had sole ownership. FAV began the move into mobility around 25 years ago when they were approached by a Christchurch man who wanted someone in Nelson to sell his products. After simply tak-ing a commission, Robin and his wife Meryl began buying the mobility scooters from him and finally expanded into everything from wheelchairs and lift chairs to walkers, beds and crutches. “And because of our background with electron-ics and the workshop, that meant the repair side of it was right up our alley too,” says Robin.

It hasn’t just been forty years in the business. Robin and FAV have always operated out of the building you’ll find them in today. At times they have switched between what is now their work-shop, Cartridge World, and the new Mobility 4 You store, but they have always maintained their

little piece of Queen St. “I just enjoy the job, you get so much vari-ation. You might be putting a wheel on a walker one day and you might be doing a complex set up of a $40,000 power chair the next day. And for the last four years we’ve been doing the Ministry of Health and ACC stuff for the top of the South Island. We’ve got the contract to perform all the re-pairs, maintenance and modification work

for any MOH and ACC clients, so that creates a lot of work for us, too,” says Robin. The expansion into a more comprehensive range of mobility equipment has recently taken form as Mobility 4 You, and for around two and a half years the store has successfully kept locals mobile. “We were just about ready to move in here when those floods came, lucky the carpet hadn’t gone down. The painters had walked out on the Friday and it flooded on the Sunday, so we had to go back and replace all the skirting boards, touch up the paint and then put the car-pet down,” says Robin. Meryl has taken the drivers seat within their re-tail business, constantly improving her knowl-edge on the products they stock so as to provide

customers with the best advice on all mobility equipment. Not only do they sell everything and anything to keep people mobile, almost everything is available for hire too, a great solution, and an affordable one, if customers are only temporarily in need. Wheth-er it’s surgery that has put you out of action or if the grandkids are coming to stay, Mobility 4 You can hire out anything from a wheelchair, power chair, shower stool, highchair, bassi-nette, car seat, capsule or booster seat. “People say it’s a weird mix, but I mean a push chair’s mobility, a childs’

car seat is mobility. It’s giving you the ability to get your kids out in the car, to me it all fits the mobility theme,” says Robin. “We’re probably one of the few shops anywhere that can cater from a newborn through to someone who might be 100 years old.”Meryl and Robin are also experienced at safely and correctly installing car seats for parents. Buying or selling your home and property is an exciting experience. Being open and honest, with excellent communication and negotiation skills, is paramount and I constantly strive to raise the bar with my work. With my attention to detail, your property will be presented and marketed at its best. Representing Wellington in squash at both junior and senior level, and being number 1 in Wellington taught me that determination and hard work gets results. After a career in IT in Wellington, accounting and marketing in Nelson, owning and renovating numerous homes and rental properties, and working as an interior designer, real estate is an ideal career - and a real passion of mine. After sailing the Abel Tasman for over 15 years with my children, and living in Nelson for the last 6 years, I am passionate about my home region. It is a wonderful place to live. I look forward to making your next real estate experience exceed all your expectations.

While the rest of the South

Island encountered rain, snow

and pestilence it was typical

Tasman sunshine at Kaiteriteri

Beach on Sunday as hundreds

descended on the shoreline for

the Riwaka School Mid-Winter

Festival.

Bands, performances and the

standard array of hot and tasty

food made for a welcome way

to spend a winter morning, while

children were entertained by

bouncy castles, mini jeeps and

trains as well as a big dig for

A duck and dip kind of day for winter fest

prizes around the golden sands.

The main attractions of the day

were the mid-winter dip and the

duck race, both of which drew

plenty of entries from locals and

out of towners keen to support

Riwaka School.

Fairies, bumblebees and

superheroes were among the

costumes on display as the swim-

mers gathered for the former.

Jeanette Clark from Lower

Moutere was found in pre-plunge

contemplation of the icy fate that

awaited her.

“Everyone has their bucket list

of things to do, and this is one of

mine,” she said.

With the tide in for the 11am

start of the dip there was a very

short run from the shore to the

ocean, leaving the hundred or so

brave folk who entered little time

to chicken out.

Admirably, a handful managed

to remain in the water for an

extended period of time to milk

the moment, although it should

be noted that most of these peo-

ple were female.

For the rest however, the

sequence of events once sub-

merged was akin to someone

abruptly hitting the rewind button

on a DVD.

The duck race was a slightly

more drawn out affair, yet attract-

ed just as much interest as the

earlier event, although it wasn’t

long before the nature of inani-

mate object racing set in and a

good portion of the entered ducks

were soon bobbing listlessly in

the lagoon,

Speaking to the Guardian after

an extremely successful day in

the sun, Riwaka School Principal

Fraser Campbell was ecstatic

with the public response to the

event.“There was just a real good

buzz around the place and a real

connection between the commu-

nity and school,” he said.

Showing leadership and

immense fortitude, Mr Campbell

took to the water for the dip along

with Deputy Principal Katherine

Sefton, a feat which he says was

“better than coffee”.

The Mid-Winter Festival raised

close to $9000 for the school, a

total which is believed to be up on

previous years.

Development boom for region

White water wonderMost of the 250 plus competitors at

the weekend’s Buller Festival were

from out of town, but Nelson boy

Tommy McDowell made sure he

was up there with the best – taking

out the C1 open men’s slalom.

The Buller Festival is New Zealand’s

premier white water event and at-

tracted a large crowd of out-of-town

competitors – including a former

Olympian from the UK.

The festival started off with the

popular boater cross, an event

which sees kayakers race together

down the river. Over the course of

the weekend there was also kayak

and canoe slalom, rafter cross, SUP

race and the classic cardboard cup,

which involves making a vessel out

of cardboard and tape and taking it

down the river.

The event is held every year and

showcases exactly why Murchison

is known as the “four river plains”,

with its top spots being used by

hundreds of competitors over the

weekend.Event spokesperson Sophia Mulder

says this was no doubt the biggest

weekend on the Murchison calen-

dar, with plenty of money spent in

the town. “I think this year we had a lot of

people coming from further. We

had a lot of international competi-

tors and not just professional ath-

letes but some just here for a good

social time,” she says.

“There was a good long queue eve-

rywhere, the Four Square was flat

out, the petrol station was flat out.

I don’t think they’ve sold as much

bread, meat and beer as they did this

weekend.”

slalom at the Buller Festival over the weekend.

A 120-site holiday park on Lower Queen

St, a $50 million lifestyle village on Wens-

ley Rd in Richmond and a 95 lot rural resi-

dential subdivision in Wakefield are the

latest developments to get the green light

as the Tasman district continues to grow.

Queen St Caravans and Motorhomes has

already started stage one of their holiday

park development which will be open in

time for next summer. Ben Nevis Holdings

had a resource consent for their 95 lot ru-

ral residential subdivision on Totara View

Rd, Edward St and Gossey Drive North in

Wakefield signed off last Tuesday, while

commissioners have approved the Olive

Estate lifestyle village at 109 Wensley Rd.

A resource consent for the Lower Queen

St holiday park was granted last Septem-

ber, and co-owner Rod Yarrell says they

are presently working on installing fencing

and the underground cabling and water

pipes. He says it has been a big job with

600 metres of trenches, 3.5 kilometres of

electric cabling and 210 metres of fencing.

“We’ve already spent four months on this

stage. We are powering-up 50 sites for self-

contained motorhomes and caravans and

then we’ll get started on the ablution block

and laundry.

“We have consents for 120 sites but we’ll

probably only put in around 90 so they’ll

all be a bit bigger. There’s also going to be

camping sites and 12 cabins but we won’t

be taking permanent residents.”

The holiday park is being developed on the

site of Rod and his partner Linda Manera’s

business, Queen St Caravans and Mo-

says they have already been getting inquir-

thritis.Along with his partner Sue, Maurice leads an active

life and part of it is volunteering at the Ngawhatu

swimming pool, where he is a trained lifeguard.

April, as an upgrade of navigation equip-

ment is carried out at Blenheim Airport,

where it usually goes. The work in Blenhe-

im means the plane – a Fokker 27 Friend-

ship – will arrive in Nelson each day at

6am and its noise will have a “noticeable”

impact. But the 6am landing is much better than

3am, which is when NZ Post usually flys

in and the time they had proposed to land

in Nelson. Nelson Airport Ltd chief execu-

tive Kaye McNabb says the delay to 6am

will have a big impact on NZ Post, but they

weren’t willing to have such an impact on

locals during the middle of the night.

“If the aircraft arrived at 3am I am sure we

would be inundated with calls wondering

what was going on,” says Kaye.

“After discussions with the operator it

was agreed the aircraft would delay its ar-

rival until 6am, to minimise the effect. The

changed schedule will have a significant

impact on NZ Post with the inevitable flow

on effect through the distribution and de-

livery chain, so we’re pleased that the op-

erator has been so willing to co-operate for

the benefit of local residents.”

The first early morning landing is expected

to be on April 7.

A group of Wanderers rugby legends inspired the latest gen-eration of the club's players to produce another champion-ship winning performance when they defeated Kahurangi 21-12 in the Car Company Nelson Bays division one final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday.Taylors Contracting Wanderers had been beaten finalists in the last two division one finals, but this year it was a case of third time lucky as they secured the Nelson Bays crown on Sat-urday to go with the Tasman Trophy they won last month. Although Wanderers have de-veloped into a more mature, battle-hardened unit over the last three years, captain Trael Joss says they were fortunate to have a secret weapon for this year's final. Five members of the club's first and, until this year, last cham-pion-winning team handed out the jerseys to the players before Saturday's final and Trael says their presence proved to be in-spirational.

"All the young guys know about them and what they did for the club," Trael says. "It was very humbling and inspira-tional having them in the sheds with us - you just wanted to go out and play for them."I think the old guys enjoyed it too, just being around rugby again and being in there with the players. They looked pretty happy about it."Trael says former players of-ten presented jerseys to the Waimea College First XV when he was playing for the team and he thought it would be a good motivational idea for Wander-ers - and he was right. "I saw an article [in Waimea Weekly] about the 1955 Wanderers team and me and my brother [Wanderers fullback Jessie Pit-man] thought it would be good if we could get them along. We asked Fraze [team manager Frazer Lochhead] if it was pos-sible to get them together and he did the rest."Frazer says Trael's motivation-al masterpiece gave their team a massive boost. He says they had been under a lot of pres-

sure to win after losing the last two finals and the presence of some of the champion 1955 team instilled confidence in the young players. Laurie Reade, who along with his brother Barry, Stan Friend, Alan Bell and Murray Nicholls, were the members of the cham-pion 1955 team who handed out the jerseys on Saturday, modestly down-played their role. "We just said a few words here and there but the play-ers seemed very appreciative," Laurie says. For the record, Wanderers scored the game's only two tries with hooker Dan McLachlan scoring in the 27th minute and centre Sione Holani crossing early in the second half. Morne Van de Berg kicked a penalty and a conversion while Jes-sie kicked two penalties. Mike Wells kicked four penalties for Kahurangi.Waimea Old Boys won the di-vision two final 17-12 against Wanderers, while the Town women's team beat Country 18-0 in the early games at Tra-falgar Park.

They must be among the strangest names in football, but the Seals, Thistle and the Bo-gans have all won their respec-tive football leagues, along with the more appropriately named Tahuna FC.Suburbs Seals were the main talking point of a busy Satur-day afternoon for Nelson Bays Football. The defending divi-sion two champions stepped up into the top tier this year and remarkably won it in their first attempt.Stacked full of former Main-land League players, the Seals deserved the title, although it may have left a few red faces among the grade's more estab-lished teams. In the second division, Ta-huna FC claimed the title sev-eral weeks ago, after challenges from FC Nelson Locomotive and Motueka faded late in the season. In a congested third division, Richmond Thistle sneaked ahead of clubmates the Horn-bills, FC Nelson and Tahuna FC to claim the title. Thistle beat Tahuna FC, on Saturday to take top spot. There were four possible winners going into the final weekend of the season. In the newly-created Mas-

ters division, the Bogans took an unassailable lead with still one game remaining. The Richmond-affiliated team beat Wakefield 3-1 on Saturday to claim the title. The Bogans held off a strong challenge from FC Nelson for the title, with Mapua in third. In the womens division, Nel-son College for Girls top the grade with FC Nelson and Sub-urbs one point behind them. NCG and FC Nelson play each other this weekend in a game that could decide the title. NCG have two games in hand though.Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont says, with the leagues now out of the way the foucus turns to the

cup competitions. "It's been another great season and the leagues are the barometer, eve-ryone can have an off-day dur-ing a cup game but usually the best team comes to the top over three months."He says there was plenty of ex-citment across the grades and says the secret to success is keeping the divisions competi-tive. "The one great success of my time here is the increase of senior footballers. In 2008 only 23 senior teams, we now have 30. If you give people good competition for a long time you get good numbers."Cup games for the three top di-visions start this Saturday, with the Masters starting the follow-ing week.

Seals, Tahuna, Thistle and Bogans wrap up titles

The Richmond Bogans celebrate wrapping up the Nelson Bays Football Masters Division at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

Winter fishing has been hot and cold with some good bite days and some not so successful fishing days. This why it's called fishing, and why most fishers have stories of that one day where everything went right and it was the best fishing ever. That is some of what keeps people heading back out to try their luck again and again. However it is not always about just the fish in the bin, it's about the ex-perience, awesome scenery, unusu-al catches, the power of the sea, the amazing sunrises, and banter with the crew. One thing that can change your day is to use a variety of techniques to see what will be most effective. There is no rhyme or reason some days what may work, it may be bait or artificial baits, jigs, slow jigs, softplastics, lures, flasher rigs, live-baits, dead-baits - the possibilities are many. Some days it is a certain colour that may be getting the most attention, style of jig, type of bait or fishing technique like slow jigging or very

lightly weighted rigs that may be the winning combo.Everytime I fish I learn something new from that day or from others.Fishingwise, there is still some very good fish getting caught around the district, kingfish, snapper and blue-cod being the most common. The fishing pressure from more and more boats in the same areas is starting to show with less fish be-ing caught on those days, recently we witnessed 35-40 boats in the same spots, all with sounders ping-ing down, and, this proved to be a very slow days fishing for most. A combination of the sounders, mo-tor noises from outboards and in-boards, all resonating down to the depths. This is when it may be a chance to try a new area away from the mass-es and learn your own spots for fu-ture success. So next time you are out try some-thing new or different, it may change your success and, even if not, it was worth a try.Enjoy the winter fishing all.

Russell Curtains Nelson Under 17 representa-tive team had a tough road to hoe when they left for their New Zealand Under 17 Tournament in Mt Maunganui without their inspirational captain Poppy Restieaux and their vice captain Taylor Kirker, who was to take over from Poppy. The girls had time to come to terms with Poppy’s loss, however Taylor’s withdrawal on account on injury was just a couple of days before de-parture. However, to the girls’ credit, they came together to make the most of their opportuni-ties. Although their ultimate goal was to make the coveted top sixteen, their first task was a top two finish in pool play. Nelson made the per-fect start with a convincing win over Hamilton City B 41-27 with Tali Uia leading the charge from goal shoot, while Natasha Bannister had a strong performance at goal keep.Nelson then lost to a strong Kapi Mana team 25-41, before bouncing back to beat the Har-bourside Invitation side 33-12 and then Auck-land 2, 43-15.Wanganui was the game which got away – it could have gone either way as the teams could not be separated at half-time. Wanganui were up by two at three-quarter time, however a few wee errors crept into Nelson’s play and they ended on the wrong side of the ledger 27-32.Nelson then stepped up again to beat Wairarapa 39-9 and Horowhenua 44-25.The play off for 25th against Rotorua could have gone either way. Nelson played well and coped better with their physical opposition and, al-though they had a three goal lead at half-time, Rotorua chipped away at the deficit and finally record a 29-24 win.Coach Mandy Whiting had high praise for her players, saying “they were a really, wonderful bunch who had great attitudes”.
