“kept me sane”.The story starts around three years ago when Vicki – a local school teacher in her mid-30s – was told she was going through menopause and the chances of her getting pregnant were around 2 to 5 per cent. A week after she found out she was pregnant, in March this year, Vicki started bleeding heavily. She went in for a scan and her uterus was full of blood. Doctors told her that she probably wouldn’t be able to carry the baby. She says those weeks were “hor-rible” she was constantly sick but

the bleeding slowed and by week 13 the doctors said she was back on track. “But I felt that it wasn’t,” she says. “I felt things weren’t go-ing well at all.”At 21 weeks, while at a school sports tournament, Vicki’s waters broke, so she was rushed to hos-pital. The very next day she got the flu and was in isolation for ten days at Nelson Hospital. There she was repeatedly told that the baby wouldn’t survive if she gave birth before it had reached 24 weeks. “So it was pretty awful, I was so sick and trying to deal with this. We didn’t think we’d have a live baby then because it was another two or three weeks

before we got to the 24 week mark.”At exactly 23 weeks Vicki went into labour and they prepared to say goodbye to their baby. Then a call was made to Welling-ton Hospital specialists and they were prepared to take the Frosts – if they wanted to go. “So it was

completely surreal how everything changed. We really, really didn’t want a baby that had to fight for the first few months or years of his life, because it’s not fair on the baby. As

much as we desperately wanted a baby, we didn’t want it at the ex-pense of a baby having a miser-able life.”They decided to give it a go and Vicki was given drugs to suppress the labour. Two days later, on Au-gust 26, she gave birth to Jack, all 712 grams of him.Jack was rushed away with the doctors and his father, who was on hand to make a decision of whether to stop trying to save him if he was struggling too much. Vicki says even then she felt there was very little chance of Jack surviving. But he kept fighting and fighting. Even after five weeks of eve-rything going well, Vicki says nurses were still telling her not to get her hopes up. “I cried a lot, I spent a lot of time in tears. It was my only chance to have a baby and I really wanted to do what I could, but not at the expense of a

miserable life.”Jack has had plenty of obstacles to overcome, including compli-cations with his stomach, eyes, veins and lungs. But he’s come through them all and the prog-nosis for a normal, healthy life is excellent. Vicki says through the whole or-deal, her blog on her Facebook page has been a surprising source of strength. “The funny thing is I’m not big on Facebook and defi-nitely not a public person, but we were getting so many text mes-sages I decided to make a page with updates to keep people in-formed without having to con-stantly send text messages. “It was really just to let friends and family know and it just took off. It was really bizarre.”Vicki is hoping this week to write her favourite post yet. A picture of her young family in their own home for the first time.

‘We’ve been let down’Andrew Board

A Nelson woman who has led the charge to have woodburn-ers reinstated in some parts of Nelson, says the Nelson City Council has “let us down”, and is leading a protest outside the civic house on Thursday to let councillors know.Melissa Short has spent months collecting infor-mation about the rules around woodburners in Nelson and other parts of the country. She says the recommendation that will be put in front of councillors this week has let ratepayers down by not consulting with them during the review. And at least one councillor agrees. Councillor Tim Skinner was on the working party and says he’s disappointed that the issue hasn’t been dealt with and that ratepayers couldn’t have their say. Tim says he’s disappointed the public weren’t included, because it was clear from the start that they should have been. The initial agenda notes, for the first meeting of work-

ing party, on July 24, stated its role clearly as “an interface between community and sec-tor groups so that interested members of the public can provide feedback”.Tim says that didn’t happen. “The public were not consulted and that was what the working party was there to do. I was

frustrated at that but it was pointed out that the com-munity wasn’t a stakeholder.”Tim says air qual-ity in airshed C, which covers Atawhai and parts of Nelson city, is

well within national standards and could allow woodburners back. He says there’s also room in airsheds B1 and B2, in Stoke and Tahunanui, before they hit the national standards. The Nelson Air Quality Plan was passed in 2004 and aimed to clear up Nelson’s poor air quality. It has done that, but ten years on some say it’s gone too far and there is plenty of room to allow clean air woodburners back into some parts of Nelson and the air quality still be with-

in the national standard. It was a big issue at last year’s election and a working party was set up to investigate op-tions earlier this year. This month, the working party sent a recommendation for full council to consider. The rec-ommendation is to bring for-ward a review of the air quality

plan to 2016. Because installing a new woodburner is now pro-hibited, a change in the Nelson Air Quality Plan is needed before new woodburners can be al-lowed back.Melissa says that’s too far away.

“I’m very, very disappointed. This is a much needed, long-awaited report into the air plan and the community is begging for change. We’ve had this op-portunity, $100,000 has been given to it and the community has been ignored.”Chair of the working party, councillor Luke Acland, was unavailable for comment. Councillors will discuss the recommendation on Thursday morning. The protest will start at 8.30am.

Hundreds of motorcyclists took to the roads of Rich-mond, Stoke and Nelson last Saturday for the annual Ul-ysses Nelson Toy Run. Motorcyclists from the Top of the South and the West Coast decorated themselves with Santa hats and tinsel and loaded their bikes and scoot-ers with various gifts for dis-tribution by the region’s Salva-tion Army to children in need over Christmas. Celebrating its 26th year, the ride, which started in Cam-bridge St, Richmond, saw modern and classic bikes pa-rading through the streets and finishing at the Trafalgar Cen-tre car park.

Nelson shoppers are feeling the Christ-mas spirit, with the city again recording the highest increase in spending, this time for the first two weeks of Decem-ber.Hospitality is leading the charge nation-ally, with growth of nine per cent, ac-cording to figures released yesterday by eftpos company Paymark. “This may reflect the annual Christmas celebrations being particularly buoy-

ant, but we’ve seen consistent growth in this sector throughout 2014. It may also be due to an increase in domestic and international tourism in places such as Nelson and Otago where growth is strong,” says Paymark’s Paul Whiston.Overall Nelson recorded growth of 7.7 per cent, well above the national average of just 4.3 per cent. In total, $46.5 million was spent through the Paymark network in the first two

weeks of December.Uniquely Nelson manager, Cathy Madi-gan, says the figures are great news for the city. “It’s just building on the strong start through November. Certainly, re-tail spend has kicked in and people are getting out there. Obviously hospitality and accommodation is helping to prop that up too. I think next week is going to be a bumper week so retailers are all happy.”

Some friendly neighbours in The Wood have taken out a national Good Neighbours competition, along with eight others across the country.Bridget Cassidy and Mike Stevens were nominated by Lynette Miller, after their exceptional care of another neighbour who has been hospitalised. “Our neighbour had been in hospital for a month after a fall,” says Lynette. “Bridget’s partner found him, and they called his family and encouraged him to go to hospital. She then drew up a roster for nearby neighbours to help feed and walk the dog.” The community has pulled together to help their neighbour while he’s been hospitalised.

“Mike visits him regularly and brings him books, and also helps in the garden,” says Lynette. “It’s no ordinary garden either, it’s a flower growing business so it’s important it’s looked after.”

The pair will share a prizepack from the Warehouse as part of winning the competition, which is run by Neighbours Day Aotearoa. The Neighbours Day team, made up of Lifewise, Inspiring C o m m u n i t i e s , Public Libraries of NZ, The Mental Health Foundation and Ne i g h b o u r h o o d Support NZ, are

encouraging Kiwis to get to know their neighbours and to find ways to support each other at the local neighbourhood level.

A launch that was built in Wel-lington in 1929 and has been in the same family for four, going on five, generations, has just been re-launched in Nelson af-ter its latest refit.Judith Glue’s grandfather, Roy Harvey, and his brother-in-law, Sam Weine, started building the 35 foot kauri launch on a steep section behind Sam’s house in Kilbirnie in 1927. Veca was launched in 1929 and remained in Roy’s family for 58 of the next 85 years with Judith and her husband Pete, of Rich-mond, completing the latest re-fit in Nelson earlier this month.Pete says Veca, which was named after Roy and Sam’s wives, Vera and Caroline, has a fascinating history with her framing being constructed out of an “old man rata tree” Roy and Sam cut down in Akata-rawa Forest, near Wellington. They also had to build a ramp over the top of Sam’s house to get Veca out of the section and down a steep road to Evans Bay where she was launched.“They had to use two old Wel-lington coal trucks to get her down the road,” Pete says. “It was so steep they put an-chors into the road to stop

the trucks and boat taking off down the hill.”Sadly, Roy had to sell Veca in 1941 because fuel prices had skyrocketed during World War II.

However, Judith’s father, Bruce Harvey, brought her back in 1968 when he saw her “tied to a mooring a forlorn state in Ev-ans Bay” and she has stayed in the family ever since. “Roy spent most of his retire-ment restoring Veca for Bruce and then we acquired her as an inheritance. We pulled her out of the water again in 1985 and transported her to Bill Gibbons’ old shingle plant in Lower Queen St for her second refit.“We took out every screw in the hull and refastened and re-caulked her, and fibreglassed the topside, and then we re-launched her on Christmas Eve in 1987. I remember that because the Ministry of Trans-port wouldn’t give us a per-mit to take an oversized load through town, but we went anyway.“It was a bit of a nightmare because the transporter got a flat tyre in the middle of Stoke. There was traffic everywhere and I said to the guys, ‘bugger the tyre, keep driving’.” The latest refit involved recon-structing the wheelhouse and Pete says he was a little con-cerned about the boat being out of the water for about five weeks.

Summer is here so take a few minutes to do this pool check list. Even when you are not using your pool you still need to ensure it is safe and secure to minimise the chance of drowning

My pool fence/barrier is at least 1.2 metres all the way around the pool.

My pool gates/doors self close and latch from 150 millimetres and the latch is at least 1.5 metres high or can only be accessed by reaching over the gate.

I have no openings in the pool barrier greater than 100 millimetres.

I have a backflow preventer on the tap I use for maintaining my pools water level so I don’t risk contaminating my household water supply.

I don’t have anything climbable closer than 1.2 metres from the top of the fence/barrier. (Check over the boundary fence. My neighbour hasn’t inadvertently created a ladder by stacking things against the fence).

I only have pool related activities in the pool area. It’s not a good place to dig my garden.

Search swimming pools at www.nelson.govt.nz and see what else I can do to keep my pool safe.

Pete says Veca gets plenty of use with their children and grandchildren always joining them for their annual Christ-mas boating holiday to the Marlborough Sounds. “It gets a bit crowded with eve-ryone aboard and the cabin’s

a bit low, especially when you have sons who are six foot five and six foot four,” he joked. “But she’s a lovely boat to sail and she’s very economical to run - we spend more money on our rum than we do on our diesel.”

NEW CEO FOR AIRPORT: Nelson Airport has a new chief executive. Last month, long-time CEO Kaye McNabb an-nounced she was retiring and the Board of Nelson Airport Limited yesterday announced Robert Evans as her replace-ment. Robert previously worked at Wellington Air-port and North Queensland Airports. He says he’s excited about the new role. “I am excit-ed by this opportunity and am very cognisant of how impor-tant aviation access is to iso-lated and regional economies. I

am very conscious of the acco-lades, and exceptional qualities that Nelson Airport provides for its patrons and stakehold-ers, and will look to build on that positive reputation.”

WATER RESTRICTIONS: Due to the lack of significant rainfall and dropping water levels at the Maitai Dam, Nel-son City Council has introduc-ing stage one water restrictions in all urban areas.Stage one restrictions allow odd numbered houses to use sprinklers on odd days only

and vice versa for even num-bered houses. The restrictions apply to the use of sprinklers on gardens, lawns and or-chards, but do not at this stage apply to areas used extensively by the public, such as bowl-ing greens, golf course greens, cricket pitches and public gar-dens.

DIRECTOR OF NURSING: Pamela Kiesanowski has been appointed as the Nelson Marl-borough District Health Board Director of Nursing and Mid-wifery.

Facing a vote of no-confidence in his presidency of Nelson Grey Power, Neville Male says the “nasty character assassination” has shocked him. This Sunday, December 21, members of Nelson Grey Power will vote on whether to keep the former Sport Tasman boss on, or turf him out.Neville says he wants to fight for his job because he believes he is still the best man to lead the organization into a more modern future.

“I have deliberately refrained from making any public comment to date, but an unauthorised letter this week from the vice president [Kevin Gardiner] sacking the association’s elected secretary is the last straw,” he says. “In regard to the claims about me, I see them frankly as part of a ‘character assassination campaign’, designed to stop the progress of the restructure programme and to overturn a unanimous decision to terminate a position which the Association

Management Committee unanimously agreed was now no longer appropriate.”

That role is that of the current manager, Pat Carrick, who has been a strong member of a group keen to see the back of Neville. Neville says over the past few months he’s been accused of putting Grey Power funds into his own bank account, and has had a committee member call an applicant for a new job to tell her

not to take it.“I have been asked by members and others

why do I want to continue in the role while all of these nasty things are going on. My response has been that I believe Nelson Grey Power can do great things in the future for its members and the wider community, but it must change its image and modernize before that can happen.”Earlier this month the executive committee passed a vote of no-confidence in Neville, prompting the full member vote this Sunday. The vote of no-confidence in Neville is at the Suburban Club on Sunday, December 21, at 2pm.

Grey Power president wants to continue

Neville Male.

Nayland College art students Milena Baden, Holly Maitland and Maddy Hanson will be leaving the school with a colourful parting gift as they head off to university next year.A mural at the front of the school that Milena had always admired was the inspiration behind creating their own piece, to showcase the talents of the Nayland College art department, and give back to their school after five memorable years. The mural is also a celebration of all three girls being accepted into the Ilam School of Arts in Canterbury, an achievement they are extremely excited about. The girls were required to take at least two art subjects this year and send away a portfolio of all their work. The mural is expected to be finished in a few weeks time and unveiled early next year.

Tahuna Modellers Pond:The Tahunanui boating pond has been a favourite place for the

young, and not so young, of Nelson for many decades, [when it has been cleaned], to try out their Christmas or birthday pre-sents or various marine models they have

built. I remember in the 1950s, as a mem-ber of the Tahunanui Scout Group, going down and cleaning the algae out, and as a school kid enjoyed many hours at this pond. The council will be doing the people of Nelson no favour if they do anything but concrete the pool's bottom.

The minority of Nelson's popula-tion, who coerce the council into spending many tens of thousands of dollars on so-called artistic embellishments around the city, for example, a green human-faced asparagus, some rusty iron and a walkway along the river, [which no soldiers would have walked along on their way to the port as it was mud flat].No greater work of art can be than that of many happy chil-dren sailing their boats on a safe haven, the Tahunanui Modellers pond. David Potts.

Mike Corkill says thanks:Good luck Mike, I hope you get to see your amaz-

ing Christmas 2014! xxx From a $1 Warrior! :) Nicky (via nelson-weekly.co.nz).

It's a privilege to be a part of your journey. The love

of NZ is with you all. Deb Clarke (via nelsonweekly.co.nz).

I cried reading this yesterday. Send-ing my aroha to him and his family.

I have no idea what they're going through, but I'm truly sorry to hear the updated in-formation. Jannelle Patterson.

What I find sucks about this situ-ation is that so many families and

people get given so much from the gov-ernment and they don't even need or de-serve it. This family, who really need help, have struggled the entire time to try and raise the funds themselves. My heart and prayers go out to Mike and his family. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand xoxo. Sarah-Hope Bailey.

I too felt tears when I read this yes-terday. Much love to you and your

family xoxo. Kelly Watson.

What sad news to hear. Sending love and prayers to you and your

family. Verity Bartlett.

Really sorry to hear this. I've do-nated to Mike's cause and a few

other people fighting cancer, fundraising for life, extending treatment and in two others it's been too late, they've died soon after. I wish these stories became public

earlier so these poor people had more of a chance. Jasmin Price.

So sad to hear, thinking and pray-ing for you and family xo.

Eniko Fekete.

Such an evocative photo of Mike & his wife, capturing the aching

totality of their situation - the enduring bravery, the love, and the shadow which has come between them. May their family feel peace and love during the last of their time together. You are a community paper in the truest sense, Nelson Weekly; Mike's gratitude for how you helped rally us all is such a wonderful testament to that. Melis-sa Short.

Butcher robbed:Poor chap really has been hit with the s*#t stick!! As for the robbers,

I do hope they get severe diarrhoea from their Christmas dinners!! And then con-tract the clap!! Janelle Thorpe.

Look at Trade Me that might flush them out. Nelson might be attract-

ing a lot of people who want to live there, but it is also attracting a criminal element. The crime rate has certainly increased over the last three or four years. Brenda Kenny.

Compassion and dedication have never been absent from New Zealand Red Cross volunteers Mary Keddie and Pat Borlase. The ladies were amongst several that received awards for their services to the Red Cross organisation at their annual gathering, last Thursday. Branches from across Nelson and Tasman region came together to celebrate the end of the year and recognise the contributions made by volunteers, ranging from five years of service all the way up to 70 years. “No-body expects the recognition, but from the Red Cross’s perspective, it’s nice for them to be recognised, they don’t do it for that reason, they do it because they enjoy doing it and because they care,” says Red Cross’s service centre coordi-nator, Jackie TyeWhile 23 volunteers received long ser-vice awards, Mary Keddie and Pat Bor-lase were also acknowledged with Hon-orary Life Membership Awards, given to those who have played a particular role in the Red Cross over an extended period of time and made a valuable contribution to the organisation. Pat became part of Red Cross officially in 1989. Back in the sixties, she had been involved with sewing for Red

Cross through the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, and after her move to Richmond it seemed natural to join them. She began as a relief driver for Meals on Wheels and two months later found herself on the committee. Her dedication to making sure none of the recipients missed their meals when drivers were low has even led to her roping in her whole family to get the job done.Mary is also primarily involved with

Meals on Wheels, and has been since 1960. As well as gaining honorary life membership to Red Cross, she was also the recipient of 2014’s Outstanding Community Services Award. Over her 70 years with Red Cross she has greatly enjoyed meeting a lot of “lovely people” and encourages more young people to come into the organisation. Red Cross will also be celebrating its centenary year in 2015, with activities planned both locally and nationwide.

Nelson arborist Brad Cadwallader has won the country’s top arboriculture award. The Ron Flook Award is named after Nelson land-scape architect Ron Flook and is the top award of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association.Brad, who owns Cadwallader Tree Consultancy, won the award at the New Zealand Arboricultural Association awards in Rotorua, last week.Carl Rogers, chairman of the New Zealand Nota-ble Trees Trust, says the award is to recognise high standards of practice, including tree raising, tree health and management, and amenity tree protec-tion or design. “Brad continues to be a strong advocate for trees. He has hosted many educational workshops around the country promoting good tree manage-ment practices and is a regular speaker at various green industry conferences and seminars.” Brad previously worked at Nelmac.

VOLUME THREE

This window was designed and crafted by JE (Jackie) MacDonald (Artist), Assistant Craftsman Francis H Day. Framing, installing

and building Richard (Dick) Jones. Donated by the Day Family, Marsden House Trust. Dedicated on 25th August 2007.

Nelson’s rich history of characters, conflicts and celebrations is detailed

in this third volume of stories featuring discovery and survival,

heartbreak and triumph. These stories are about real people in real

situations and in some cases the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Whether you are picking this up for just a quick read, or are reading

from cover to cover, enjoy Snippets of History as a small glimpse

into the Nelson that once was.

Isaac BaIgent and hIs oaksSome of Wakefield’s notable oak trees came from the famous Kew Gardens just outside London. They were planted by Isaac Baigent, whose family were assisted immigrants to Nelson in 1853. Sponsored by brother Edward

who was already here, they too settled in Wakefield. Isaac also built the Masonic Hall and later became a Mason. Early on he acted as undertaker and through partnerships the same business still operates today as P.Day and Sons, Funeral Directors.

Sergeant Edward John Baigent was born on 31 July, 1893, to Charlotte White Baigent and Jo-seph Baigent, Wakefield, Nelson, New Zealand. Baigent, a farmer from Wakefield, Nelson, joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion as a Private dur-ing World War One. He embarked from Welling-ton on 16 October, 1914, and served in Egypt, Gal-lipoli, France and Bel-gium. Baigent survived the war and was discharged on 12 December, 1918. He died on 6 September, 1973, in Opotiki.EJ Baigent is one of the featured servicemen in the WW1 exhibition at Nelson Provincial Mu-seum.

The sound of trumpets and horns heralded the festive season when the Nelson City Brass Band spread their annual Christmas cheer around the streets of Nelson last week.Former president of the band, Pat Heaphy, emptied the shin-gle from his farm truck and drove around the streets, while 13 members of the band sat in the back and played Christmas carols.

The neighbourhood opened their doors and wandered out onto the streets to join in the festivities. Nelson City Brass have been playing Christmas carols in the streets of Nelson and Rich-mond for over 70 years. Estab-lished in 1857, it is one of the oldest brass bands in New Zea-land. They are collecting donations on their travels, with all pro-

ceeds going towards the Nel-son City Youth Brass Band operating costs and instrument replacement. The Nelson City Brass Band will be playing in Richmond, Stoke, Brightwater and The Wood from 6.15pm to 9pm each day, weather permitting, up until December 23. For further information, please re-fer to their website www.nelson brass.org.nz

TUESDAY 16 December 2014 NelsonLocally Owned and Operated WeeklyFeature20

For your early morning convenience or late night desperation for hot food, Night ‘n Day is bringing it all to you from its new Nelson location. Proprietors Paul and Tania Monopoli have owned and operated the Stoke Night ‘n Day for the last 14 years, and are now extending the popular convenience franchise to the centre of Nelson city. The idea had been rolling around for five or six years, and with nothing else like it to cater for the Nelson people, it was simply a matter of finding the perfect spot. Paul and Tania have found that in the old JK Kids store beside the cinemas and the transformation from kids fashion to convenience store is well underway. Night ‘n Day has been a popular choice

with customers for 24 years, after its establishment in 1990, and Paul and Tania are looking forward to being up and running, providing people with the goods they need when they need it. “It’s like the jingle; ‘we’ve got it when you want it’ at the Night ‘n Day store. It’s not just a local dairy, it’s more than that, it’s a convenience store,” says Paul. And convenience means longer hours, more variety and, of course, a fantastic team of friendly and efficient staff. With the creation of a new business, Paul and Tania have taken the opportunity to build on the idea of convenience, and as a result the Nelson Night ‘n Day store will feature some new elements not seen in any other

store like it. Their bakery section at the rear of the shop is the perfect place to pick up a bagel or sweet treat during your lunch hour, and everything in the cabinet is made on-site by the Night ‘n Day staff. A

deli cabinet will also stock plenty of meals for those on the go, and a Frozone self-

service machine is sure to be popular with carbonated drinks, slushies and yoghurt. Last but not least, a very handy fruit and vegetable section is available for a quick

stop on the way home to get your ingredients for dinner. The rest of the shop will resemble the Stoke Night ‘n Day with ice creams, lollies, drinks, takeaway hot food and all your other necessities. Over their 14 years with

Night ‘n Day Stoke, Paul and Tania have supported a number of sporting activities

and they say Nelson will be following in the same community-minded footsteps. “It’s good to be involved and give something back to the community and your customers,” says Paul. We’re into sport and they support us, so we do the same for them.” They’ve also built up a good rapport with the locals who frequently call into their Stoke store. “We’ve got lots of regulars who come in the morning for their coffees, or to pick up their bread rolls, sandwiches and cold drinks on their way to work. It’s good, I love to be behind the counter and have a yarn to the locals, and even if they’re not locals, it’s still good to have a yarn with them,” says Paul. Their popularity with their customers also comes from

a loyal team of staff who work hard to deliver quality goods and friendly, efficient service. This level of customer service will definitely be found in the staff about to start in Nelson. Night ‘n Day Nelson will be open 365 days of the year, meaning they’re available for their customers when others aren’t. Even on Christmas Day you can count on Night ‘n Day for any last minute items. During their normal week from Sunday to Thursday, the shop will be open from 5:30am until 11pm at night, while Fridays

For the second year in a row, a Waimea College student has been chosen to be part of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company, which will perform at the Globe Theatre in London, July 2015. Peter Thomson was invited to join the group of 24 students after a lengthy audi-tion process. Over 5,500 students participated in the annual Second-ary Schools Shakespeare Festival, held in April this year, which saw stu-dents perform five and 15 minute excerpts from a Shakespeare play. From that competition, Peter was selected, along with 47 other students from around the country, to participate in the week- long Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand National Secondary Schools Production, in Dunedin. He was presented with a Best Actor award and from there was chosen to join the group which will attend the prestigious Globe Theatre work-shops. “I am over the moon to be chosen, the lady in charge phoned me late at night and down-played it a little at first, I was so amazed and so pleased,” Peter says.

The three week trip will include per-formance workshops, question and answer sessions, behind the scenes tours and a visit to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s birthplace. On the final night, Peter and his group will perform a one hour long seg-ment of Shakespeare on the Globe Theatre stage.“I enjoy performing Shakespeare as

the language is so clever and witty, and it brings different challenges compared with perform-ing in normal English,” Peter says.Peter attends Nelson’s Off Broadway Perform-ing Arts School and has just completed the in-ternationally-recognised Trinity College grade eight performing arts exams, where he gained a distinction. He says he owes a lot to Head

of Performing Arts, Mel Stewart, Drama Teacher, Mr Emerson, and English Teacher, Jeanette Dungan, from Waimea College, plus Tami Mansfield, Off Broadway director, for his recent achievements. Peter was also presented with the Nelson Youth Jazz Best Bass Player in Competition Award this year and would like to continue his per-forming arts studies when he leaves school.

A bid to get more girls play-ing cricket in Nelson is off to a promising start, with more than 40 taking part in a new compe-tition. Nelson Cricket Association eventually hopes to get up to 200 girls, aged 6-13, turning up on Thursday evenings at Green-meadows during the summer to play and be coached, as it seeks to build on a renewed interest in the game among local women. The free initiative is being partly funded by a $3064 KiwiSport grant from Sport Tasman, with Nelson Cricket picking up the other half of the cost. Nelson Cricket community cricket coordinator, Jon Rou-than, says the girls play a modi-fied game called Quikhit. Play-ers are divided evenly into teams and bat in pairs for three overs, losing three runs every time they get out. There is also a 10 metre exclu-sion zone around the pitch where fielders are not allowed until a batswoman hits the ball. This teaches the girls about run-ning between the wickets and

the importance of fielders walk-ing in with the bowler, he says. Those waiting to bat or play re-ceive coaching, as the aim is to teach them about the game as well as having fun. Jon says the competition, which started last month, has received a great response. "The girls love their cricket and play hard every time, and par-ents are stoked to have cricket readily available for their girls.’’ Jon says he is confident num-bers will grow and that the com-petition will become an annual

event. "We are going into schools dur-ing lunch hours and running games and coaching sessions, which is proving very successful in getting new players involved.’’ Some who had never picked up a cricket bat before had ex-cellent hand-eye coordination, while their teachers are keen for them to give something new a go, he says. The aim is to upskill girls so more could play Saturday club cricket and go onto higher hon-ours.

A very special thanks to local businesses, individuals and community organisations who supported St John in 2014. As a charity we rely on the generosity of our community to ensure we can provide our vital services.

• St John’s paid and volunteer ambulance staff provide emergency and non-emergency care, patient transfers, events medical services and air support.

• Our volunteers ensure the Health Shuttle, Caring Caller and Friends of the Emergency Department services are available for those who need extra support.

• St John provides valuable youth and schools programmes, first aid training, first aid kits, defibrillators and medical alarms to enhance the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.

Your support truly does make a difference to the patients we care for, the people we assist and the staff and volunteers who provide the services in the Nelson Area.Donations, grants, sponsorship and bequests received in 2014 have directly supported these services. We have purchased a wide range of new equipment for our local ambulance fleet and comfortable furniture for Nelson and Richmond ambulance stations and provided support to our 120 volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our dedicated volunteers who freely give their time to support their community. We wish you a safe and happy Festive Season.

Thank you!

FOOTBALL: The Nelson Mar-lborough Falcons are tied at the top of the ASB Youth League after a big win over defending champions, Auckland City, on Sunday. The Falcons beat Auckland 4-1 to keep them at the top of the competition with Waitakere United. With one game left in the regular season, the Falcons need to win and hope for a draw or a loss from Waitakere, who currently lead the Falcons with a better goal difference.BOWLS: The Stoke Bowling Club has a new men's sin-

gles champion in Lloyd Bel-lis. Earlier this year, Lloyd was part of a development team, coached by Vince Roper, that won the regional development inter-centre competition in Christchurch. In this season's singles final, Lloyd defeated Chris Alldred 21:14.

CRICKET: RWCA Athletic College Old Boys will play Tay-lors Contracting Wanderers in next weekend's Car Company Nelson two-day club cricket final. Wanderers beat Sprig & Fern Motueka at Brightwa-

ter on Saturday to qualify top, ahead of ACOB which lost to Post Boy Hotel Wakatu at Victory Square. Waimea Toi Toi United beat Car Company Stoke-Nayland by 10-wickets at Jubilee Park. The final will be at Saxton Oval if the pitch is ready, or Brightwater.

MULTISPORT: The second race of the Nelson Triathlon and Multisport Club's sum-mer triathlon series will be a cross-country, Xterra-style event held at Rabbit Island this Sunday. There will be long and short course options, as well as a du-athlon option. Registration is from 7.30am to 8am with the race timed to start at 8.30am.

Berries ripe for the pickingNelson, Christmas and berries are a match made in heaven, so a trip to Tasman Bay Ber-ries should be top priority this summer. The Tasman Bay Berry Company is a family busi-ness, passion-ate about sharing the delights of summer with the public. Their shop on McShane Rd has expanded even further since last year and owners Maree and Glen Holland are getting ready for the busy holiday period, introducing some new solutions to keep queu-ing to a minimum. Designated stalls catering to customers wishing to pick their own or pick up online orders will mean the shop is freed up to deal with those purchasing ice creams or fresh, pre-packaged berries, and their car park attendant will help direct traffic so everyone can come in and enjoy what Tasman Bay Ber-ries has to offer. The expansion of the business has also led to a new animal enclosure behind the pack house. Children will love Muz and Cuz, the piglets, Lily and Lola the lambs and

their family of goats. Maree says the idea of Tasman Bay Berries is to be a destination for families who can come out and experience the country atmosphere

of picking their own berries, re-laxing at a pic-nic table under the shade sails with a real fruit ice cream, and seeing and feed-ing the animals. Tasman Bay Berries offers a casual and rustic feel, perfect for a morning or af-

ternoon of collecting your own black raspber-ries, raspberries or boysenberries. Strawber-ries are also available from the shop, along with frozen berries, ice creams and 100 per cent natural, homemade jams, created with Tas-man Bay Berries quality fruit. With the shop staying open until the end of January, make the most of Tasman Bay Berries. Either call in and see them on 37 McShane Rd, they’re open every day from 9am until 5:30pm, or visit their website at www.tasmanbayberries.co.nz to pre-order your berries.

All Fight 4 Victory bouts confirmedThe final two fights for next year's Fight 4 Victory have been confirmed. All ten bouts have now been announced and the latest will see two engineers square up against each other, while Stone-wood Homes co-owner Rhys Horncastle will battle Paul Hammett, brother of for-mer All Black Mark Hammett.Engineer Karl Griffith, of Talley's, will fight Anchor Engineering owner Heath Botica. All four men say they've never boxed before but Paul admitted to a few fights "without gloves". Victory Boxing Charitable Trust pro-gramme director, Paul Hampton, says he's delighted with the card. "We're really excited to get all ten fights, it's been a long process but now we can start training and really get into it."The card now has lawyers, chefs, hair-dressers, a police officer, an army officer, engineers, a city councillor, a newspaper editor and business owners.Paul says the range of people who have put their names forward has been a real highlight. "We're really happy with the names that have come forward and with the range of backgrounds, and all of them are there to support the programme."Corporate tables for the event on April 4 are sold out and general admission tick-ets will go on sale in late January.
