A report released by ACC says that Nelsonians are the most injury-prone in the country. Have

you been out of action due to injury?

Facebook finds carssomething you hear regularly in Nelson, but there’s something going on, there seems to be a lot of burglaries going on in Richmond. You might hear of one or two in Nelson but there’s like six or seven every week now and that’s what concerns me.”Peta-Marie initially told other users of the Face-book pages to call the police if they spotted the car anywhere, but after adding her own phone number she received a call from someone who knew where it was. “I went there and, talking to the neighbours, I found it had been there for a few days. The neighbours didn’t know it had been stolen.”Peta-Marie believed it was taken for a joyride because expensive items such as aftershave and Ray Bans sunglasses had been left in the car but were still there when it was recovered.

Just last week a 2007 Ford Ranger that was sto-len from Richmond, had been recovered after it was posted on the Nelson Police Facebook Page and Dave agrees that social media was helping victims, as the publicity was likely to put more pressure on the offender to abandon the vehi-cle.Police statistics show that there have been 146 unlawful takings in the 12 months leading up to June 2014. However, that figure wasn’t nec-essarily 146 stolen cars because it also includes attempted theft and the theft of trailers.Dave says reports of unlawful theft of vehicles is something that came in “peaks and troughs” throughout the year, with no reports coming through some weeks. He reiterated that locking your vehicle can go a long way to prevent theft, and believed most of the scooter thefts could have been prevented if they had been locked with a chain.

Long hours pay offAlex Herbert believes all the hard work and long hours he has spent in the kitchen are starting to pay off, after he was announced as the winner of the Nelson Hospitality Award’s Up and Coming Chef section. The 22 year old, originally from England but grew up in Golden Bay, is the Harbour Light Bistro’s demi-chef de partie, and says the win was a big surprise and reward for the work he has put in over the past two and half years in the hospitality industry. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. But I work pretty hard,” he says. “There have been a lot of nights when I’ve been in the kitchen at 11 o’clock and I could’ve started at eight in the morning. It shows that the hard work pays off in the end.”Alex contested the Up and Coming Chef section against four other chefs from across the region. The competition featured a “mystery box” for-mat, where all contestants were given the same ingredients.Included amongst the items were a chicken breast and streaky bacon, plus an assort-ment of standard vegetables. Alex made a chicken breast stuffed with a citrus mousse-

line, something familiar and a dish he thought the judges would like. “I thought I’d go something more complex, but we do something similar here at the Harbour Light and that’s where I got the idea for it. You don’t go to that sort of thing trying something you’ve never done before.” Alex believes the Harbour

Light Bistro, where he first started as a NMIT student doing work experience, is a restaurant that enables him to learn and showcase his skills. The rest of the winners, includ-ing the Bidvest Restaurant of the Year, will be announced at the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards on August 25.

Two weeks after winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, lawn bowler Jo Ed-wards has finally arrived back in Nelson – and to a very warm reception.Jo, who won the women’s sin-gles in Glasgow, was the only Nelson athlete to pick up a gold medal at the Games. To greet her at Nelson Air-port on Friday night was a loud crowd of about 30 people, including members of the United Bowling Club – which produced two other medallists in Val Smith and Amy Mcilroy – and her fam-ily.Jo told the Nelson Weekly that winning gold in Glas-gow was one of her proudest moments. “Each and every one of them has a certain

place in my heart. The first one is always pretty cool but I think 12 years down the track, especially with the amount of young play-ers coming through, it’s just a real achievement.”She was a little over-whelmed with the reception at Nelson Airport. “It was a little worrying thinking no one would be here, but it’s just fantastic. Everyone who was here plays a big part in what I do, and while I get the rewards, at the end of the day there’s a big team behind me,” she says. “We’re only a little club at United, but it produces some amaz-ing talent.”

An arson attack could have left Nick Fowler $300,000 out of pocket if his Pro Karts business hadn’t had full insurance cover.A building and everything in it, including 13 go-karts, computer timing equipment, safety gear, parts and tools, were destroyed in March, and the offenders responsible for the arson attack were never found. After four long months, the Tahunanui business has finally been able to offer its full services again, with Pro Karts officially back open. But Nick never expected it would take so long. “It’s taken a long time. It’s been a relatively stressful and full-on winter, trying to get everything going and trying to keep what’s existing going, like our laser tag,” he says.Nick, who has been in business for nearly eight years, was able to run some of the karts he had left – but not ones suitable for children – as he wanted to keep his “name out there”. “We didn’t want people to think we had closed down because of the fire. It was important to keep our name and our brand alive enough that when we did open that people still knew we were around.“It was getting a bit like Groundhog Day, coming down every week with no results because things have taken so

long, like council consent for the new building. But seeing the karts go round and the smiles on people’s faces has put me back on a high.”And although it has been an “extremely frustrating” four month wait, Nick remained relatively positive. “We’ve got a fleet of karts we’ve just imported from England and we’ve refurnished our other karts so the whole fleet is like new. I didn’t want to dwell on the negatives, just think about the positives; otherwise you get down too much.

The business had full insurance cover, including loss of income during the four month period, and Nick says he was pushing Nelson City Council to beef up their security and lighting down the back beach end of Tahunanui – something he’d look at improving himself as well. “We’ve got some lighting going in and some security cameras going in, but we’ll keep the pressure on the council to get some more down here for the whole area and for the safety of the visitors.”

Garin’s ELAE reaches Rockquest finalELAE don’t hold any grudges for not making the Nelson Smokefre-erockquest final, but their notable omission was made even more glaring after the Garin College duo were selected for the national final next month.Anna Robinson and Olivia Nott, who are best friends, have been performing together for just over a year and a half. They previously went under the name Livvy and Anna, but have since merged their names together to create ELAE (pronounced L.A).

Anna says the pair are “so excit-ed” to be able to perform at the national final in Auckland, after thinking their chance was over. “It’s a proud moment because we pushed through something that we thought was the end for us,” she says. “It shows that if you do keep trying then something good can come out of it.”Six bands and three solo/duos

were named in the national fi-nal, but ELAE were the only act from Nelson, with Oh Blok miss-ing out. They were given a “highly commended”.ELAE is the only duo amongst the top three solo/duos, but Ol-ivia, who is the younger sister of Broods members Caleb and Georgia Nott, didn’t believe that was an advantage. “We are differ-ent to the soloists because we have the opportunity to do harmonies, but it doesn’t mean it’s an advan-tage. Everyone is really talented.”

After a year without snow at ground level, St Arnaud residents and visi-tors have already been treated to a white winter in 2014, and would have woken up to snow at their doorsteps last Tuesday.St Arnaud had its largest snowfall of the year on Tuesday, with snow tum-bling down at around 9:30am and again at 5pm in the evening, beau-tifully captured by Tasman District Council’s Snap IT HD webcam. But the amount of snow was unable to be accurately recorded as Met-Service does not have an automatic weather station in St Arnaud, and is instead reliant on members of the public taking photos or reporting it.

The Stoke Community Centre’s Social Seniors Club needs a new van to help pick up their “least mobile” members from Nelson, Stoke and Richmond, so they can enjoy the club’s daily meals and activities. So that’s why they have entered the Car Company Charity Drive competition, which is offering a prize of $10,000 for a group or organisation that is doing great things in our community. And there’s no question the Stoke Seniors qualify for the competition, with the club providing a place for their 450 members to meet and socialise and enjoy the most amazing meals.“We are a social club for home-based seniors,” chairman of the board of trustees, Allen Johnson, says. “A lot of older people living at home find themselves being isolated and that’s where we come in - we are like a youth drop-in centre for seniors.”Allen says the Stoke Seniors provides a full day of programmes for members including entertainment, education, tours and meals. The club targets home-based seniors aged 60 and over, and aims to help their members maintain their independence and keep them active and healthy. Allen says Stoke Seniors is based at the rear of the Stoke Community Hall on Main Road Stoke and employs four full-time and one part-time staff who are

assisted by 20-30 volunteers. The cooks provide a picnic lunch for club tours on Mondays and lunches for “50 to 60 people” at the club’s headquarters on

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. “It’s really good home-cooked foods and for some of our members it’s the only meal of

their day,” Allen says.Stoke Seniors have an annual budget of $260,000 with $60,000 of that being spent on food. They receive $60,000 in funding from the Ministry of Health with the remainder coming from

community grants and fundraising.Allen says the club “has a number of things on their wish list, but the big ticket item is to replace the oldest van in our fleet.” The vans are critical for picking up their least mobile members so they can enjoy the daily activities and meals at the club.Stoke Seniors are holding their next quiz night at the club’s hall on Friday, August 29 from 6pm. Tickets are available from Stoke Seniors Hall at 548 Main Road Stoke or by phoning 5472660.The Car Company Charity Drive has attracted over 40 entries so far, with entries closing at 4pm this Friday.

Looking out the window, the view out over the Arthur Ranges blanketed in snow is stunning at this time of year. It also reminds me that this is the time when things can get hazardous on the roads.I would encourage everyone to take a look at their tyres and wiper blades, and make sure they are fit for purpose. There’s no way you’re going to control a car with slick tyres on a wet or icy road. When you head off in the morning it’s essential that you take the time to clear your windows properly. Driving with your vision obscured is not only a risk to your health and welfare, but you could be liable for a $150 infringement if caught. The reality is it’s only going to take a few minutes to get the car ready to go, and in my view, the consequences of an accident far outweigh a few minute’s inconvenience in the morning. Some of the roads in our area do become impassable at times during winter. Just last week the Takaka Hill road was closed due to snow for a couple of hours at night. If you get caught out in a remote area you could be in for a cold and uncomfortable wait. Check the road and weather conditions if you are heading to the more remote areas, and if you have any doubts either postpone your trip or take a set of snow chains. Even around town we have areas that can ice up overnight. I’d ask everyone to slow down and take an extra bit of care, and increase your following distances.

Students to help SPCA fundraiserStudents from NMIT’s new beauty therapy programme have gifted three pamper packages to the SPCA, which will be raffled off on Monday for their Cupcake Day fundraiser. The pamper packages include services such as facials and massage, and are made by nine second-year students. As part of the Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy course, students had to create a pamper package and market it.As well as being for sale, the students decided to donate three of the packages for Cupcake Day. The raffles will be outside New World, Countdown and The Warehouse.

Good on them for trying to make a difference. Big, good quality, local-

Richmond Rabbits win third TRL title:

"No other side has gone before".

You're wrong there. The Motueka Tigers won three consecutive grand finals in the early 90s and the Whakatu Firebirds won three in a row from 1997 to 19991. The Firebirds also won every game they

played in 1998, no draws or losses. Jah Jah.

Great effort! Just a question though, was the comp run under

the TRL umbrella? Because the article says 'no other TRL side...' Tristan Laubscher

Southern Link debate:When decisions are made to build new roads and change traffic flows,

it is usually to free up traffic-clogged town centres by building a bypass. A section of countryside is selected for the new road and the town is freed from its traffic bur-den. Here in Nelson the opposite is being de-manded by a small-minded group who are ignoring the detrimental environmental and health effects the Southern Link will have on hundreds of families living in the Victory and Bishopdale areas, and Nelson as a whole.Rocks Road performs a very effective job as a bypass for the town centre. It makes absolutely no sense to put traffic back through built up areas. If someone was to suggest taking trucks off Whakatu Drive by building a new road along the Railway Reserve through Stoke on the grounds that the waterfront shouldn't have trucks on it, they would, quite rightly, be laughed at and ignored.A new road is not needed. It will not solve any of the claimed traffic issues in Nelson. All traffic will still be going through the Annesbrook roundabout. We need to look at longer term, sustainable traffic manage-ment. Car sharing, better public transport and park and ride schemes from Rich-mond. Ian Millward.

Horticulture plays a big part in the Nelson region, and a job in the industry can be interesting and highly rewarding. Skills Update Training Institute, in conjunction with NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology), is offering people the chance to gain a National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) (Level 2). Their distance learning program, starting in September, means you can have more freedom in your study and has proven to be very successful; gaining a lot of interest from small block owners, keen gardeners and those intending to enter the horticulture industry. The program will be run over 10 months on a part-time basis, with the majority of study undertaken online from home, making it a suitable option for people who are currently employed. This part-time program is complemented with weekly tutorials at NMIT in Nelson, where students will talk face to face with their learning facilitator about the information they have been studying over the week. They also have the opportunity for hands-on practical learning, which takes place on a monthly basis at the NMIT/Skills Update Training facility in Richmond. The program

has been hugely popular, attracting people of different ages and various walks of life, ranging from job seekers, home gardeners, doctors and accountants – all with the same passion for horticulture, and the best thing about the program is that it is absolutely fee free for all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

Topics included in the study content have been developed in consultation with the industry, so that the skills they are looking for in an employee are provided in the program. It is an NZQA recognised qualification and is useful for anyone looking at work around the region’s orchards, market gardens, nursery’s and beautiful parks. The course content includes plant propagation and irrigation, tools and records, plant identification, pruning trees, shrubs and climbers, soil

and growing media, and botany for gardeners. The broad introduction to horticulture is also a stepping stone to further education, so for more information about how you can enrol in this fully-subsidized programme, contact Eileen Kaufman on 021 174 9414 or email her at [email protected]

Participants in the first sailing commemoration included the air training corps, the Nelson and Motueka cadet corps and the sea cadet corps. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

As Rule Britannia filled the air and the thoughts of those gathered were with Nelson’s courageous WW1 service men and women, the first sailing was brought to life once more. Participants donned their WW1 uniforms in an open air ceremony that aimed to re-enact the brave footsteps of Nelson’s men and women as they prepared to set sail to war. Mayor Rachel Reese and Nelson RSA recreated the messages behind the stirring speeches that would have farewelled

our service people and others across New Zealand. Nelson City Council’s WW100 coordinator, Ian Barker, says the event was a great opportunity for everyone to understand the sense of honour, occasion and trepidation experienced by the heroic young Nelsonians. At the time of the sailing the war had just begun, the horrors of fighting were still to hit Nelson. A single wreath was laid to remember the loss of life on both sides of the trenches.

WW1’s first sailing recreatedThe Great Stoke Pallet Sale The Great Stoke Pallet Sale at McCashins Brewery generated a lot of interest with the public. Their unwanted stockpile of pallets were on sale for $2 each, with all proceeds going to Stoke School. Their massive collection of pallets were never all going to go, but around 150 wooden pallets were sold raising $300 for the school, which McCashins Brewery generously topped up to a total of $450.

Auctioned Medals The rare collection of World War II medals that went up for auction drew a large crowd. Along with the medals was a portrait of the Nelson soldier who was awarded them and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Auctioneer John Walker says the medals sold well and that it was also very nice to see they were bought by a local, so they can remain in the soldier’s community.

Steampunker GroupNelson Steampunk group The Hickey Piks Southern Steamers had a wonderful response from the public after their Sunday afternoon tea at Melrose House. The group’s positive feedback may see their numbers rise and a lunchtime picnic at Rabbit Island last Sunday saw some new members join up. Their meetings are held on the first Sunday of every month at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum, so for more information on membership call Robyn on 021 133 9599.

the Nelson tramping club, keen divers, fishers, and gun men. It’s an easy working environment, when you’re do-ing it in the weekend it’s easier to talk about it during the week.”

When there’s no line between work and play, the service that the staff at Hunting and Fishing can offer is backed up by their own personal experiences, and when it comes

to gear for the seasoned hunter or diver, tried and trusted is essential. “They know what works and they’re not go-ing to recommend it if they don’t think its right for the customer’s needs. We talk all the time about products that work and don’t work and what we would be buying if we were on the other side of the counter. Customers have the trust in us that we will advise them on the right products.”Hunting and Fishing in Richmond may be a smaller store than Nelson but they pride themselves on a second-to-none store atmosphere. “Our shop presentation and stock levels make us stand out,” says Chris. “It’s an enjoyable place to come into and it’s clean and tidy and displayed well. People can come in and enjoy a browse around, they’re not shuffling down aisles, and even if they’re not buying they can come in and enjoy exploring the products.” Hunting and Fishing Richmond also cater to any budget, making them the best option for any outdoor enthusiast. “We cater for all levels and we have the best product available for your budget. If it was a rod and reel for 100 bucks, we

pick what we feel is the best value product for that amount, so when a customer comes in and is only willing to spend 100 dollars; he can get the best quality within that range.” Hunting and Fishing Richmond are glad to call the long-standing icon of Richmond their home and are committed to making what has been a good store even better. Their doors will be open on Friday 22 with specials right across their product range, including up to 50 per cent off Ridge-line clothing and heavily reduced prices on rods, reels, fishing accessories, firearms and hunting gear.

Hunting and Fishing New Zealand is coming to Rich-mond. There aren’t many New Zealander’s who don’t ap-preciate our beautiful kiwi environment and Hunting & Fishing New Zealand also shares a love for our stunning outdoors. Bringing Hunting and Fishing to Richmond was a no brainer for Chris and Karen Scully who are also the own-ers of the award-winning Hunting and Fishing New Zea-land Nelson Store. The demand to cater for the Richmond region’s keen outdoor enthusiasts and visitors was obvious

to the Scully’s, and soon their wealth of experience will be available for Richmond locals to take advantage of. Chris has 17 years of professional involvement at Hunt-ing and Fishing New Zealand, and Karen seven years. Their successful Nelson store specialises in providing hunting and fishing and camping and tramping equipment and with Richmond on route to the regions’ many walks and national parks, it

will focus heav-ily on catering to the campers and trampers while also carrying on the traditional lines of hunting and fishing gear that the organisation made its name with. The Richmond

business has a deep history which is very much respected by Chris and Karen. Originally established as Richmond Sports Depot by Kelvin Gardner and Brian Murphy in the

mid 70’s, it was later sold to Dave and Sandy Heyward in 2000 and be-came known as Stirling Sports. The new custom fit-out lifts the store into the modern era so that it can continue to be a local icon in sports and the outdoors. Hunting and Fishing New Zealand’s Richmond store will be offering customers a huge range of equip-ment for outdoor pursuits including hunting, fishing, free diving, scuba diving, camping and tramping. Al-though they are predominantly

known as Hunting and Fishing New Zealand, they also have a another brand called Camping and Tramping New

Zealand, which provides quality products for those looking to make the most out of our re-gion’s back yard gems, like the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks. Hunting and Fishing Richmond have a range of boots, packs, shelters, sleeping bags, lighting, cookware and more, en-suring you have everything you need to stay safe and get out there. They also have the best equipment for every other kind of activity, with quality lines in hunt-ing gear including firearms, archery and cross-bows, hunting accessories and optics, saltwater and freshwater fishing rods and reels, and last-ly, men’s, women’s and kid’s outdoor clothing, headwear and accessories to cover every season and every challenge.Chris places a lot of importance on the people who will be working in his Richmond store and always tries to have a mix of age and expertise to help people with every enquiry. “Everyone here has a passion for the outdoors,” says Chris. “We have five staff here and all are active in their spe-cialty field. the Nelson tramping club, keen divers, fishers, and gun men.

TUESDAY 18 August 2014 NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly

Every little girl wants to be a ballerina and at A Star Academy of the Arts former performer and teacher Lucy Moignard takes great pleasure in passing on her knowledge of the per-forming arts world to all her students. Lucy and Roy Moign-ard are bringing more than just dance to Nelson. While Roy has a background in music, primarily classical guitar, Lucy has managed to fit more than a lifetime of performing arts experience into her CV. Life on the stage began for her at 16 and after studying at dance school, she worked as dancer and teacher, before going on to drama college. Over the years, Lucy has worked as an actress and musical theatre performer, a writer for a performing arts magazine, a theatre agent, stunt

horse rider and has run her own performing arts school for 15 years in the UK. Their move to Nelson has been a recent one and the launch of their new academy for performing arts even more so, but Lucy and Roy are excited about what they can offer the community's young people, in fact any age. “Here in Nelson it’s a very artistic town and lots of people are interested in the arts. There’s also more opportunity for people like us in New Zealand. In the UK we would be working for a church hall or somewhere like that, but here in New Zealand there are many properties that you can turn into something fantastic for the community,”

says Lucy. A Star Acade-my of the Art offers local young people, and even adults right up to sen-ior citizens, the chance to learn a whole range of performing arts. From Ballet, Tap Danc-ing and Irish Dancing to music lessons, musical theatre, keep fit classes and even mother and baby groups. They also offer speciality classes for those looking for a career in pop sing-ing, where microphone skills and other techniques are learnt, and commercial dance, which is based around a number of dance styles often seen in music videos. Along with their chosen classes, students

of the school will also have the opportunity to take part in an additional fee-free class that focuses on keeping dance-fit with stretching, core strengthening and other important conditioning exercises. Assessments, exams and competi-tions are open to those who are interested, and at the end of each term students will receive a report of their progress so far. Modelling is another area they look at and Lucy’s time as

an agent is very beneficial for young people looking at a ca-reer in modelling. The fashion modelling course covers the importance of caring for hair, skin and nutrition, which is complemented with tutorials from industry professionals. Students in her school are also immediately eligible for talent auditions, including one that will be taking place on Sunday 24 August for an international film company looking to use a

handful of dancers from around the world for a docu-film. A Star Academy of the Arts will be holding its open day on Saturday 23rd from 9am until 5pm and is a great opportunity for everyone interested in the huge range of performing arts options Lucy and Roy can offer. “It’s for everyone really,” says Lucy. “Those at zero all the way up to senior citizens can find something here. We want to be somewhere people can meet their friends casually each week, but at the same time we can cater to serious competitors.”

Nelsonians can now address a diverse array of skin conditions such as premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, pseudofolliculitis (razor bumps), and acneic inflammation with the BioSurface™ Peel, Dermalogica’s first-ever chemical peel. This exclusively-formulated chemical peel provides amazing results, yet has the advantage of little to no post-peel redness or downtime. It is a professional-only product, with each treatment taking approximately one hour, available at Nelson Beauty Therapy. The BioSurface™ Peel is a revolutionary four-step exfoliant system and is the first product to be introduced within Dermalogica’s Professional Expert Strength, a new line of professional products. The application process consists of an initial Prep Step followed by layers of Enzyme and Acid Active peel solutions, which are neutralised in the fourth, and final, neutraliser step. Because of the intensity of the powerful active ingredients, special training and certification are required to apply, which the team at Nelson Beauty Therapy received earlier this month.“Today’s woman is time-deprived, but still cares greatly about her skin health and wants results,” says Dr. Diana Howard, Vice President of Research and Development and Global Education for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute.

“Since Dermalogica launched more than 25 years ago, its mission has always been to set the industry standard and provide its tribe of Professional Skin Therapists with the most cutting edge products and treatments so they are best equipped to meet the demands of today’s consumers. The new BioSurface™ Peel will provide women with the results they desire without any recovery downtime.”

Active ingredients include Salicylic Acid used in both the Prep Solution (Step 1) and Acid Active(+) (Step 3). As a keratolytic agent, Salicylic Acid causes weakening of cell connections, allowing for sloughing of skin cells. Combined with a low pH, keratin bonds are loosened, creating a burst of exfoliation, which addresses signs of

ageing and hyperpigmentation. The Enzyme Active(-) (Step 2) delivers an 83% total enzyme solution utilising Pumpkin Fruit enzymes with Papain, Protease and Aminopeptidase enzymes. Plus, Moth Bean Extract offers a gentle, botanical alternative to synthetic retinoids, while offering similar effects. In addition to Salicylic Acid, the Acid Active(+) phase

(Step 3) also delivers Lactic Acid, bran-derived Phytic Acid, and Sugar Cane Extract. This step brightens areas of hyperpigmentation, helps removes impaction plugs in follicles especially in sebaceous glands, and aids in cell turnover. The Decelerator (Step 4) halts the exfoliation process with a blend of Sodium Bicarbonate, Yeast Extract and soothing Cucumber Fruit, Japanese Green Tea, Oat Leaf and Saponaria Leaf Extracts. This final phase slows the activity of the acids and normalises the epidermis, while calming and comforting skin and initiating the process of skin repair.

There was a sense of deja vu for Prime Minister John Key when he visited a Nelson company that has become a market lead-er in manufacturing concrete-cutting and polishing tools.Last Wednesday, the Prime Minister told staff and guests at Holer Diamond Tools on Main Road Hope that one of his first official duties as a Member of Parliament was to "unveil a concrete mixer". Then he ce-mented his concrete theme by commissioning Holer's new $1 million laser welder, which is used to manufacture diamond-tipped concrete cutting tools."It was the very first thing I unveiled as a Member of Par-liament and I'm not talking about anything flash like this," he joked.Key has come a long way since then and so has Holer, which was started by Fred Holer in his garage in White's Road

near Richmond in 1992. To-day Fred's sons Phil and Simon head a multi-million dollar company that employs 24 peo-ple and exports concrete cut-ting tools and technology all over the world. "I was a concrete cutter and master builder in Austria be-fore I came to Nelson in 1991," Fred says. "I saw a need for good concrete cutting tools here so I started a business in our garage on Whites Rd, and now look at us."Simon Holer says they will be able to manufacture diamond-tipped core drills, saw blades and grinding cups "20-times faster and more accurately" us-ing the new laser welder which was imported from Germany earlier this year. Simon says

that will allow Holer to in-crease their export capacity and manufacture a "more price competitive product."Phil Holer told the Prime Min-ster that the company's aim was to "generate $10 million worth of exports to Australia" to help New Zealand "increase export numbers not expat numbers".Holer's Phil Mayer gave John Key a demonstration of the welder which is the only one of its kind in the southern hemi-sphere and just one of five in the world. Key told Holer's staff that in-novative technology like their welder was helping strengthen the country's manufacturing sector. "A lot of what is happen-ing right around New Zealand is the importation of equip-ment from overseas which lifts the output for New Zealand and allows export into markets around the world," he says.

Toughen up The men who flocked to NZ’s first gold rush in the Aorere Valley in 1878 faced harsh conditions. But experienced gold miner George Lightband, had no sympathy for those who gave up. He wrote

“some men, like children, have broken up their sluice boxes and cradles and gone home disgusted, some to their mothers, others to their wives.” He suggested they should eat a sheep’s guts every day to harden up.

Nelson rowers finish third at World JuniorsNelson Rowing Club’s tal-ented duo have achieved a great result at their inter-national debut, at the Jun-ior World Rowing Cham-pionship in Hamburg, Germany.Olly Stephens and Sean Ducray arrived home to the roar of a haka from Nelson College's Fell

House boarders, and a welcoming committee of friends and family. The two local rowers re-ceived a bronze medal in the men’s quadruple scull alongside their team mates Jack O’Leary from Kavanagh College and Ari Palsson from Whakatane High School.

With game-breakers right across the park, Nelson College first XV co-captain Brendan Aso-mua-Goodman has confidence his team can upset Christchurch Boys' High School in the Press Cup final this Saturday.Nelson College, who beat Marl-borough Boys' College 25-23, are back in the final for the second year in a row, and are chasing their first title since 2007.Brendan says his team is going to Christchurch with plenty of con-fidence. "We'll be the underdogs but I know the boys can do it," he says. "We've got good individual players but when we work to-gether, that's when we are really lethal."

In the Grade 1 game between Nayland College and Garin College it was definitely a game of two halves. Nayland were on the back foot from the get go as coach Trevor Olley has struggled to field a full line up for the past eight games due to injury and illness. A reshuf-fled mid court could not match the experience of Garin, par-ticularly in the second quar-ter when they were out scored 12–2. The lack of combination, coupled with the excellent de-fensive work of Kate Hand and Sarah Robinson forced a blow out.Nayland made changes at the major break when Tayler Bo-eyen moved out to goal attack, Becky Green to centre and Cody Rupapere to wing attack. Tessa Riley was introduced and made a huge step up from the B team (which plays in Grade 5) to acquit herself well. The changes improved the accu-racy through the mid court of Nayland as they drew the third

quarter 7-all. Tayler’s play had the Garin tall timber defensive pairing moving, which made it easier to find free space. Phil-lipa Matenga moved into the defensive circle and immedi-ately struck up a formidable duo with Holly Chandler. Nayland left their best until the final quarter when they out-scored Garin 8–5. Holly had a great game as she picked off numerous well-timed inter-cepts, most of which came in the final quar-ter.Trevor was happy with his team, other than the second quarter as they never gave up as they scored the last five goals in the game. Players to come in for praise were Holly and Becky - as captain she stepped it up another level heading into South Island Second-

ary Schools, she lead from the front and provided a solid op-tion for the coach as centre in the absence of others. Tayler also came in for praise at goal attack - he likes her confidence

on the shot and general tough-ness, she will be a great option for further play at GA.Even though Garin won the game 31–21, they will need to address the basic funda-mental errors when under pressure. There were several unforced errors which need to be eliminated from their

game and they will be look-ing at addressing this at the Supernet competition and the remaining competition games before heading to the South Island Secondary Schools next month. Nayland have decided not to compete in Supernet.

The 2014/15 Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season gets ready to kick off on August 24.Some big changes to the club over the last two years has seen member-ship steadily growing and it looks like it’s not going to slow down any time soon. A change in venue to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club will see our once a month Club Day, on either Saturday evenings or as Sun-day afternoon socials, in the heart of the Nelson Marina. The club season extends eight months from October through to May, with prizegiving in June. Boat fishers, kayakers, jetskiers, land based anglers, divers and fresh wa-ter fisher folk are all welcome with senior men, ladies and junior sec-tions to enter. On the monthly club social days there will be a sausage sizzle, raf-fle and our usual fish of the month awards along with a 'bugger' award. The club has had some excel-lent speakers in previous seasons and social events who gave talks on things like boating education, MFish (now MPI), commercial fishing, the rescue helicopter as well as club members giving informative talks. This year the club continues with its length-based competition to continue promoting catch and re-lease fishing as well as only taking enough for a feed. It has always been a concern of the club having its members taking breeding size snapper so they can weigh them in for club points, when many of the members said they would have preferred to release them. We took this on board and have changed to a length-based system where a mem-ber can catch a 20lb snapper, take a picture of it on an official measure board then release the fish.Photos would then be emailed into

the weighmaster and a point per centimetre system will decide who has the biggest fish and most points. We have a point formula worked out that will make a 20lb snapper earn the same points as a 20kg Kingfish as we see those size fish as “Pin fish.” (A pinfish is a fish that reaches that "magic" weight for that species, like 20lb snapper, 7lb blue cod etc). Ac-cumulated monthly points will go towards a range of trophies that the club has on offer throughout the season for individual classes, as well as for longest fish in various species. The club calendar last year included trips away to Okiwi Bay, French Pass and Havelock and will be re-peated again this year all going well with the weather. Last season we also used local charter boat opera-tor Seabird charters for those club members that don’t have boats big enough to get up to D’Urville Island so they can have a taste of some of the hot action the area offers. We have found Barry and Lynley Bird excellent operators that have given our club members some great fish-ing experiences. This season we will also be having some club outings targeting areas closer to home. Also another benefit of belonging to a club is that some weekends members go out and find a certain bait or area is working better than others and as a club we can share that information to members, so everyone benefits. But you need to be a member and on our email list to get this up to date information. The club will be holding an Open Day on the August 24 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club starting at 2pm. The DBFC invites all existing mem-bers and anyone who is interested to come along and join the club on Open Day. For more information, contact club captain Gavin Wil-liams 027 445 4603.
