Diocese of Monterey April 2017 - Newsletter

I wish all of you and your family and friends a blessed

Holy Week and Easter Season!

God is so good in guiding us through our Lenten jour-

neys culminating in the Triduum and Easter Sunday so

that through this journey we are a new creation in

Christ.

As we celebrate God’s love for us in each of the

grace-filled moments that God gives us over these six

weeks, I pray this will be a time of wonderful spiritual

growth for you and your families.

I also look forward to seeing many of you as we begin

the Confirmation season with so many of our young

people celebrating their confirmations. I pray for each

of them that the Holy Spirit will guide and protect

them.

I wish you all a blessed Easter and ask that you also

pray for me to be a Good Shepherd for all of you.

Sincerely yours in Christ

+Most Reverend Richard J. Garcia, D.D.

(Excerpt taken from: New Prayers, “Life is good,

Lord, and today is Easter Sunday” by Michael

Quoist)

“Yesterday was Easter Sunday, Lord, but it’s

Easter today.

Whenever we are prepared to die to ourselves,

with you we open up the tomb of our hearts,

Allowing the spring to gush and your life to flow.

And even though so many men and women don’t

know, alas, that you are there already in our

human efforts,

They’ll discover this later on, in the light of your

presence.

Yesterday was Easter Sunday, but it’s Easter to-

day;

When children share their sweets after a secret

struggle not to keep the lot for themselves.

Yes, Lord, life is good, because it is your Father

who made it good. Life is good, because it is you

who gave it back to us when we had lost it.

Life is good, because it is your own life offered

for us…

But it is our responsibility to make it flourish.”

INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER FOR APRIL 2017:

CALENDAR CONTACT: [email protected]

“Dear Brothers and Sisters: In the chapter from the Letter to Romans that opened

today’s Audience, Saint Paul presents Abraham not only as our father in faith, but

also as our father in hope. Paul tells us that Abraham put his faith in the God who

gives life to the dead, who calls all things into being. Hoping against hope, he

trusted in God’s promise that, despite his old age and that of Sarah his wife, he

would become the father of many nations. In Abraham, we see the close bond

existing between faith and hope. Abraham’s hope in God’s promises was fulfilled

in the birth of his son Isaac, and, in the fullness of time, in the ‘many nations’

gathered into a new humanity set free from sin and death by the power of Christ’s

resurrection. Faith teaches us, in fact, to hope against hope by putting our own

trust in God’s word even at those times when hope seems humanly impossible. In

our Lenten journey to Easter, may we be confirmed in faith and hope, and show

ourselves children of Abraham by accepting the promise of new life given us in

the Lord’s resurrection. …

...With prayerful good wishes that this Lent will be a time of grace and spiritual

renewal for you and your families, I invoke upon all of you joy and peace in our

Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you all!” © Copyright - Libreria Editrice Vaticana

Messages from Pope Francis - follow Papa on Twitter: @PONTIFEX

04/03/2017: Lent is, by nature, a time of hope because it leads us to be born anew “of the spirit”, by the love of God.

04/02/2017: When the Holy Spirit abides in our hearts, it is he who makes us understand that the Lord is near and takes care of us.

04/01/2017: Even in the hardest and most disturbing moments, the Lord’s mercy and

goodness are greater than every thing.

03/31/2017: Fasting with a proud heart does more harm than good. The first fast is for humility.

03/30/2017: Prayer is powerful. Prayer conquers evil. Prayer brings peace.

03/29/2017: The peace that springs from faith is a gift:

it is the grace of feeling that God loves us and that he

is always beside us.

03/28/2017: If we learn to read everything in the light of

the Holy Spirit, we realize that everything is grace!

03/27/2017: Caring for the sacred gift of all human life,

from conception to death, is the best way of preventing

every type of violence.

Theology on Tap

THE JEWISH UNDERSTANDING OF JESUS

Wednesday, April 26th, 7:00 PM

London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street (at the foot of Wharf 2), Monterey

Our speaker this month will be Rabbi Bruce Greenbaum, leader of Congregation Beth Israel in

Carmel Valley. Rabbi Bruce holds Master’s degrees in Hebrew Letters and in Jewish Education. His talk

will focus on how Jesus was perceived in Biblical times, and how that understanding has changed over

time to what it is today. Our scripture readings throughout Lent and Holy Week have emphasized Jesus’

interaction with the Jews of his era, so it’s important to understand him from the viewpoint of our Jewish

brothers and sisters. Let’s talk about what we believe!

Join us to enjoy the discussion along with food, drinks, and friends!

Father, Bless our school communities as they journey during Holy Week and celebrate Easter. Help our students develop their relationship with Jesus as their Savior and Best Buddy, and help our littlest ones to begin to understand the sweet joy of the Resurrection as they savor Easter treats and see the colorful and happy decorations that surround them at Easter.
