During our regularly scheduled October Town Council meeting, the Town re-introduced the Smith/Cline and Delplaine annexations. These are the same annexations I discussed with many of you at your homes last fall. Predictably, Friends of Frederick County have asked for copies of the resolutions for the annexation as well as all our Town Codes and Ordinances. This appears to be a harbinger of yet another lawsuit against the Town. This may cost us yet again, tens of thousands of dollars. The Town is in danger of becoming a small town surrounded by a much larger county town. We will not derive any tax benefit or have any control over the complexion of the town if that happens. Kindly note that McDonalds, Food Lion, Duncan Donuts, NM Shopping Center, CVS or Costco warehouse are not in the town. Neither is the Meadow at New Market, Woodspring or the Glen. The Town’s plan, including this annexation, is part of the LONG TERM plan that addresses traffic, schools, jobs, economic development and diversifying the tax base to keep our town vibrant and economically viable for the future. With the annexations, development will not happen immediately nor will conditions improve immediately. But slowly and gradually schools will be built to eliminate impending over- crowding (overcrowding will happen even without annexation). Roads will get built to relieve what will otherwise be 3 ½ times more peak hour volume than today. Jobs will come to New Market and the Town will be financially secure for the future.
