No. 3 quarterback Coltin Gerhart, who will start today in place of injured starter Lamar Jordan and backup Tevaka Tuioti, showed last week at Boise State he throws well enough to make that happen. But the Lobos will be intent on establishing their running game against a Golden Hurricane rush defense that ranks 126th nationally. Saga Tuitele, UNM’s offen- sive line coach and run game coordinator, believes the Lobo ground attack is closing in on the kind of production that led the nation last season. “We’re so used to the big plays here, and it’s a good thing, good that expectations are high,” Tuitele said. “But it’s OK to get those sevens, those tens, those fours, and just keep trusting the system.” ROBERTO E. Carson and Golden Hurricane running back D’Angelo Brewer were teammates at Tulsa Central High School. It’s not clear whether Carson, who has missed UNM’s first three games due to academic concerns, will play today. >>> The UNM offense is the antithesis of Tulsa’s frantic extreme tempo. While the Golden Hurricane ranks second nationally in offensive plays run per game at 92.7, the Lobos are No. 91 with 66.7 plays per game. >>> No Lobo has rushed for 100 yards or more in a game this season, something that has been done 55 times during coach Bob Davie’s 66-game tenure. >>> Tulsa running back D’Angelo Brew- er must have fond memories of Albuquer- que. As a sophomore, he rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries as the Golden Hur- ricane beat the Lobos 41-20 at University Stadium. It was the first 100-yard game of his career. Brewer enters today’s game ranked sixth nationally in rushing yards per game (149.0). >>> Three Tulsa players, Brewer, run- ning back Shamari Brooks and quarter- back Chad President, each rushed for more than 100 yards last Saturday against Toledo. That hadn’t happened in Tulsa football since 1986. The last time three UNM players rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game was Nov. 26, when Teriyon Gipson, Lamar Jordan and Richard McQuarley topped the century mark. GOLDEN HURRICANE NOTES SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE As explosive as the Tulsa offense is, the Golden Hurricane defense has been the mirror image. In three games, Tulsa has given up 11 plays of 44 yards or more. “Obviously, we’ve got to get bet- ter,” coach Philip Montgomery said on this week’s American Athletic Conference coaches’ teleconfer- ence. “We’ve got to eliminate those explosive plays to make (progress) happen.” On offense, Tulsa run- ning backs D’Angelo Brewer and Shamari Brooks will test a UNM rush defense that ranks seventh nationally (78 yards allowed per game) but hasn’t faced a ground game as concerted as the Golden Hurricane’s. “This is a very explosive offense,” UNM defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said. “We’ve got to make sure our kids get aligned, that we have our cleats in the ground, that we have the right numbers in the box and the right numbers in coverage.” SUE OGROCKI/ASSOCIATED PRESS Mountain Division Conference Overall W L W L PF PA Boise State 1 0 2 2 138 97 Colorado State 0 0 2 2 122 95 Air Force 0 0 1 1 75 29 Utah State 0 0 1 2 71 118 Wyoming 0 0 1 2 43 73 New Mexico 0 1 1 2 80 72 MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE West Division Conference Overall W L W L PF PA San Diego State 0 0 3 0 88 54 Hawaii 0 0 2 1 102 109 UNLV 0 0 1 1 84 59 Fresno State 0 0 1 2 92 89 San Jose State 0 0 1 3 72 165 Nevada 0 0 0 3 72 98 Philip Montgomery 3rd year at Tulsa, 17-12. Given the Tulsa defense’s propensity for giving up big plays, a couple of shots downfield in the direction of junior wide receiver Delane Hart-Johnson might be in order. Saga Tuitele, UNM’s offen-sive line coach and run game coordinator, believes the Lobo ground attack is closing in on the kind of production that led the nation last season. “We’re so used to the big plays here, and it’s a good thing, good that expectations are high,” Tuitele said. “But it’s OK to get those sevens, those tens, those fours, and just keep trusting the system.”

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

LOBO NOTES

>>> The Lobos have two players from Oklahoma, senior linebacker Kimmie Carson (Tulsa) and junior deep snapper Lon “L.C.” Hampton (Grove).

>>> Tulsa running back D’Angelo Brew-er must have fond memories of Albuquer-que. As a sophomore, he rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries as the Golden Hur-ricane beat the Lobos 41-20 at University Stadium. It was the first 100-yard game of his career. Brewer enters today’s game ranked sixth nationally in rushing yards per game (149.0).

>>> Three Tulsa players, Brewer, run-ning back Shamari Brooks and quarter-back Chad President, each rushed for more than 100 yards last Saturday against Toledo. That hadn’t happened in Tulsa football since 1986. The last time three UNM players rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game was Nov. 26, when Teriyon Gipson, Lamar Jordan and Richard McQuarley topped the century mark.

GOLDEN HURRICANE NOTES

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE

As explosive as the Tulsa offense is, the Golden Hurricane defense has been the mirror image. In three games, Tulsa has given up 11 plays of 44 yards or more. “Obviously, we’ve got to get bet-ter,” coach Philip Montgomery said on this week’s American Athletic Conference coaches’ teleconfer-ence. “We’ve got to eliminate those explosive plays to make (progress) happen.” On offense, Tulsa run-ning backs D’Angelo Brewer and Shamari Brooks will test a UNM rush defense that ranks seventh nationally (78 yards allowed per game) but hasn’t faced a ground game as concerted as the Golden Hurricane’s. “This is a very explosive offense,” UNM defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said. “We’ve got to make sure our kids get aligned, that we have our cleats in the ground, that we have the right numbers in the box and the right numbers in coverage.”
