New Students and Families

We have had a number of new students and families join us at Wandina Primary

School this term. It is important that we make them welcome to our school community

as we all know, it can be difficult moving to a new area and starting a new school.

Please say hello and make them feel welcome and involve them in any parent face-

book pages. Thanks

Reporting to Parents

A reminder that your child’s semester 1 report will be going home in week 10. Teachers

use the SCSA Achievement Standards to determine students grades based on their

year level. Our teachers use the Western Australian curriculum to plan student learning.

This curriculum outlines the outcomes students in each year level need to learn by the

end of the year. Semester 1 reports are based on what student have in semester 1 and

how they are working towards achieving the achievement standard by the end of the

year.

Our staff are involved in moderation discussions and utilise a variety of work samples

from students around Australia to determine what level a student is currently working

at . A “C” grade in semester 1 shows that your child is working at the expected level in

relation what has been covered in semester 1. If a child is given a “D” grade for semes-

ter 1, this means that they are working towards being at the expected level and may

reach a ‘C” grade by the end of the year, once all outcomes are taught. Children

who are at a “D or E “ level will require Individual Education Plans to support their learn-

ing.

If you would like to know what the Western Australian Curriculum and Achievement

Standards look like, please go to http://k10outline.scsa.wa.edu.au/home/assessment/

judging-standards or ask your child’s teacher for more information.

If you would like to discuss your child’s report with the classroom teacher, please ar-

range a meeting with them for later in the week or early next term. Thank you.

Year 6 Badges

Year 6 students can earn their bronze, silver and gold badges over the year. They do

this by completing challenges, helping out with leadership activities and jobs as well as

demonstrating appropriate leadership behaviour.

We will have a number of students earning their badges over the next couple of

NAIDOC Day

On the 30th June, students will be involved in a number of activities to celebrate the

Aboriginal culture for NAIDOC. We will be inviting parents to a cook up for morning tea

and students will share what they have learnt via seesaw.

STEM FOR Year 6 Students

Wandina Primary School is involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) part-

nership with John Willcock College. What is STEM? STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating

students in four specific disciplines-science, technology, engineering and mathematics-in an interdiscipli-

nary and applied approach. These areas are the skills, knowledge and understandings that current em-

ployers and employers of the future are looking for in their employees.

As we don’t know what types of jobs will exist for our children, we need to ensure that students from Wan-

dina Primary School are equipped with the 21st Century learning skills that they will need in jobs for the fu-

ture. These include collaborating with others, high level communication skills, creativity and critical thinking

to solve problems and invent and develop new ideas.

We are also going to have our year 6 students attend JWC for afternoon sessions and engage in STEM ac-

tivities over the next semester.

The college have offered after school sessions for girls – The GEMS program (Girls in Engineering, Mathe-

matics and Science)-GEMS is an activity based program for girls in Year 4-6 conducted in the John Will-

cock College Makerspace (Mu2). The program runs 3.30-4.30pm Thursdays during the school term. Each

week students will be involved with a different STEM activity or challenge.

Attendance

Recent research from the ‘Every Day Counts’ report (commissioned by the University of Western Australia’s

Telethon Institute For Child Research for the Department of Education) very clearly highlights the close re-

lationship between attendance and academic progress. Barring legitimate illness which the school is sym-

pathetic to, all students should aim to attend school as close to 100% as possible.

While we may think that a day or a week here or there does not have a significant effect on a child’s ed-

ucation, in the long term, there a huge ramifications in regards to your child’s education.

It is critical that students at Wandina Primary School attend well. Absences for reasons such as birthdays,

rest days, catching up with family member days, appointments that could be made out of school hours,

holidays in term time etc should be avoided.

As always, in cases of absence, we encourage parents to call as soon as possible to alert the school. All

absences require an explanation. Please phone on 9923 4200, or email the school on Wandi-

[email protected] or inform your child’s teacher of any absences. Absences of more than two

days require either a Doctors certificate if medical reasons or an “extended Leave” (orange) form to be

completed by parents before the absence. If you have any issues with the attendance of your child

please contact the school for support. Missing School = Missing Out

Parking

No parents are permitted to park in the staff carpark. A reminder to parents that kiss and drop is

available at the front of the school. Parents are able to drive slowly through the staff car park,

stop before the zebra crossing, your children can then get out of the car and you can drive slow-

ly out of the car park. Staff are on duty near the gates to meet the children. Please do not park

in this car park as it is for staff only. Drop off 8.30am – 8.50am - Students need to walk to the crosswalk

and into the school via the front gates. Please drive slowly @ 10km per hour in this area. Pick up – 3.05pm–

3.15pm Parents need to remind their children to come to the front gates and wait near the cross walk. The

Deputy or Principal will ensure that students get in your car when you stop after the crosswalk. Please

don’t be offended if we remind you of the new rules for this area. We need to make sure that our children

P&C News

Previous Events:

We recently had our annual Mothers Day Stall and Morning tea. The stall was another success

with the children purchasing small gifts for the ladies in their lives, they were so proud to be able

to come up and select their item and pay for it! They also had wonderful manners and were very

courteous. Our Morning tea was wonderful again this year, unfortunately we did not get as many

attend as we had hoped for, but there is always next year.

What we are fundraising for…….. We are combining with the local council to create a Nature

Playground for both school and community use. It will be located between the school and the

pathway on Derna Park (where the old demountable used to be!), so majority of our fundraising

efforts this year are heading towards that awesome project, which hopefully will be completed

this time next year!! Friday 23rd June – “Winter Wonderland” Disco

Our discos are great fun and the children all have a great time. PP – Year 2 4.30 – 5.15 and Year

3 – Year 6 5.30 – 6.30. There will be pizza, chips, lollies, drinks and the ever popular Glow Products

for sale. A permission slip will be sent home the week before the disco.

And don’t forget to mark in the Wandina Family Fun Day!! Sunday 22nd October in your calendar

and come join us in this very special first time event. A separate “Fun Day Newsletter” is also with-

in this newsletter with more information on the types of stalls, food and drinks we are having and

how you can contribute to make this day a huge success.
