Millers unite in CologneAttracting food millers to amultiple feed conferenceevent is not easy but achallenge taken up byVictam Internationaltogether with Milling andGrain magazine, who arejointly hosting a one-dayGRAPAS Conferencefocused on flour and ricemilling, at the upcomingFGV Select 2017.

However, there are great synergies betweenthe various milling sectors and as the worldwakes up to the challenge of feeding 9.5billion people by 2050, the entire millingindustry sector – of flour, cereals, rice andfeed – is becoming more aware that byworking more closely together will becritical if industry is to play its vital role inmeeting the challenge ahead of us.That is why it’s important for flour and rice

millers to plan their attendance at the‘FGV Select 2017’ series of one-dayconferences that address food, feed andaquaculture set in Cologne, Germany onJune 13-14, 2017. The GRAPAS one-daymeeting is on June 13, 2017 followed by aday of ‘matchmaking’ and ‘one-to-one’

Process technology and nutrition at VICTAM’s Feed ConferenceThe technology that is used in the compound feed production has changed over the pastyears. Principles for size reduction on the example of roller milling of wheat have notchanged but applications have.

In the early times we were told that so-called hammer mills and pellet presseswere used for size reduction and sizeenlargement in the animal compound feedindustry. At that time, at the University, wewanted to know the effects on animalperformances but we were not taught thateven the pelleting process itself had a sizereduction effect, that could be responsiblefor differences in nutrient utilization andthus for animal performances.Nowadays, domesticated livestock, fish in

aquaculture and pet animals generallyconsume feeds that are processed. Theprocessing operations applied includephysical, chemical and thermal treatmentsand vary from a single step such asgrinding to a series of steps includinggrinding, proportioning, mixing, conditioning, pelleting, coating, vacuumcoating and cooling. Both pelleting andextrusion are used to shape mash mixturesinto pellets and extrudates (kibbles) andare with mixing/coating the main feedprocessing technologies. As feedprocessing adds to the costs of feed, theprocessing operations are designed toincrease the value of the final product interms of nutrition, hygiene, safety, handlingand waste.

Feed Processing ConferenceIn its afternoon program, The VICTAMFeed Processing Conference will focus onthe effects of processing but always inrelation with the utilization of the processedfeed materials in the animal. Both new, promising ingredients will be discussed aseffects of processes with respect to lysineutilization and formulation of animal diets. The aim of this conference afternoon is to

provide the conference participant with anoverview of the most important unit feedprocessing operations in terms of theirfunction but also with an overview on theirimpact on the chemical and physical

properties of the feed that potentiallyimpact the nutritional value and theanimals’ performance. Feed processingentails various areas from factory lay-outand management, to chemical changes onmolecular level and we are able to bringthe audience only a part of this interestingfield of research.Technological processes are used for

different objectives. We know the fixation

of the mix ratio’s (mixing process),improvement of handling properties (flowability e.g.) and influencing the feedefficiency. The improvement of feedefficiency is especially important, but also acomplex matter. Not only we talk aboutdifferent processes and different feedmaterials, also the target animal isimportant. We also know that for onenutrient processing effects can be positive,

whereas for others it may be the opposite. So, costs have to be weighed against theimprovement of feed efficiency in theanimal. A recent issue is the interaction ofingredients with processing: should wechoose the expander process prior topelleting or some other form of pre-compaction? Items in research of the lastdecade. Anno 2017, we are facing the fact that

we want ‘technology to be seen as anutrient’. If so, we are interested in all kindsof processing techniques for dietingredients and its relation with feedingvalue. Where feed additives do have amatrix value in diet formulation, processeffects could have a similar approach inadding value to feeds.Even today, we should have a good idea

about the effects of processing on feedefficiency, especially when exploringalternative protein sources or whererelatively new issues on nutrient utilizationare published. Over-processing, e.g. in petfood during pelleting/extrusion, has beenindicated to be important in view ofprotein/lysine utilization with respect toresults of the Maillard reaction.By controlling our processes and better

knowing its effects we will know, howproduct development in the animal

compound feed should proceed creatingfunctional feeds/nutrients based oningredients and feed additives viaprocessing. After the VICTAM Feed Processing

Conference, the audience will remember, that the physical quality of animal feeds isimportant but that processing in practiceshould not be done at the expense ofnutritional quality.

GlobalisationThis year’s conference will focus onglobalisation of markets and its possibleeffects on the feed industry, sustainability, issues of energy efficiency, animal welfareand new technical solutions. Especially thepart of alternative protein sources will betreated comprehensively during theafternoon session. What are the pros and cons of the

globalisation of the feed industry? How willthe disposal and material flows change inthe future? Are the origins of raw materialsalways traceable and how can the feedindustry enter new markets? Thesequestions and many more will be putforward to discussion. Also questions onanimal welfare come to the fore more andmore and will be included within thelectures. Which technical solutions can be

worked out and implemented? How farcan the digitalisation under industry 4.0support and accompany the globalisation? For a long time, the topics energy

efficiency and sustainability are of highrelevance in social discussions. TheEuropean Union raises the bar in so far. With the climate and energy package

from the year 2009, the share of renewableenergies shall be raised by 20 % until 2020or e.g. the primary energy demand shall bereduced by 20 %.Each country of the EU had to adopt

targets in national action plans and give anaccount of the target achievement ratestowards EU.With reference to the reduction of the

primary energy demand, legal measuresmust be stipulated Europe-wide in order toreach this aim. The general discussiondeals with for example with the obligatoryenergy audits according to DIN EN 16247or the implementation of the managementsystem DIN EN ISO 50001. In Germany, forexample, these measures are also linked tofinancial benefits and constant adaptationand amendment of the EEG gives reasonsfor discussion every year. On behalf of WUR, Dr. Ir. Thomas van der

Poel and IFF, Mr. Rolf-Michael Blume wehope to welcome you all on June 13th.

The 8th edition of the FIAAP AnimalNutrition Conference aims to address themost pressing issues facing today’snutritionists and animal feed producers. The one-day event, held on June 14, 2017in Cologne, Germany, will circle aroundseveral key topics: antibiotic eliminationstrategies, animal feed additives, alternative ingredients and monogastric guthealth.

Antibiotic replacement strategiesexploredAnimal nutrition and feeding is an essentialpart of the EU strategy to fight againstantimicrobial resistance (AMR). In its“Vision on Animal Nutrition,” the EuropeanFeed Manufacturers’ Federation’s (FEFAC)illustrates the commitment of Europeancompound feed producers to combat

antimicrobial resistance by addressinganimal welfare, animal health, economicperformance and environmental impact. The plan requires the use of dynamic

nutritional models, modern diagnostic toolsand a variety of feed ingredients, includingfunctional micro-ingredients, which proveto be effective in fostering and optimizingthe composition of the gut microflora andthe functioning of the digestive track.FEFAC’s animal nutrition committeechairman Peter Radewahn will discuss thescientific developments and researchneeded to support the innovationnecessary to reduce the need forantimicrobials in the livestock sector in hispresentation, “Reducing the need forantibiotics by means of animal nutrition.”Meanwhile, in the United States, the

animal agriculture industry is also making

strides toward removing antibiotics fromproduction. The U.S. FDA’s Veterinary Feed Directive

(VFD), which bans the use of antibiotics forgrowth promotion in animal feed, hascreated economic, welfare and animalhealth challenges for U.S. swine producers.Purina Animal Nutrition’s Dr. Dari Brown willexplore new alternative feeding strategiesand related research for reducing andeliminating antibiotic use in pig feed duringher talk, “U.S. strategies & research onantibiotic alternatives in swine diets.”

Learning about phytogenicsBridging the gap between antibioticalternatives and feed additives, theconference’s morning session will feature atrack focused on natural animal nutritionsolutions.

Livestock gut health is the key to efficientnutrient utilization and the production ofhigh-quality animal protein; however, it isconstantly challenged by internal andexternal conditions, including pathogens, stress and intestinal infections. Plant-basedphytogenic additives have been shown toimprove intestinal integrity and immunefunction; reduce the virulence of potentialpathogens; and stimulate nutrientdigestibility via the synthesis of endogenousenzymes and bile secretion. In hispresentation, “How phytogenics supportlivestock gut health,” Delacon’s director ofproducts & innovation Jan Dirk van der Kliswill explore the different modes of actionand look at these effects in poultry andswine feeding applications.Phytogenic feed additives are shown to

provide numerous beneficial biologicalactivities, including improved animal healthand growth performance — but the speedto adopt has varied from region to region.BIOMIN Holding GmbH’s Michael Noonanwill explore the prevailing uses forphytogenic feed additives and examinecertain barriers to PFA use during his talk,“Regional trends shape global phytogenicfeed additives usage.” In addition to the aforementioned

presentations, a panel discussion titled,“AGPs: Feed additive alternatives &replacement strategies,” will featurephytogenic feed additive suppliers, anutritionist from a major US poultryproducer and university researchers to fieldquestions from the audience on thisinteresting topic.

Additives for efficiencyWhile the nature of the commodity feedadditive business is very traditional andstable, the realm of specialty feed additivesis characterized by the need for continuousinnovation. Soon, livestock producers willhave to overcome several major challengesto meet the demand for animal products. In Dr. Bernhard Eckel’s presentation, “Threedrivers of animal nutrition innovation & theimpact on your business,” he will examinehow evolving additive categories will helpnutritionists meet consumer expectationsand advance modern feed formulations. Drilling down into specific additives,

thymol research out of the Italy promises tointroduce new attributes for this naturalanimal feed flavorant. Although anti-inflammatory and

antimicrobial modes of action have beenreported, new data connects thymol to amore general concept of intestinal health.A recent study conducted by the Universityof Bologna suggests that thymol wasshown to improve the intestinal barrierfunction and play a role in intestinal sensoryperception by reducing the expression ofreceptors generally upregulated during

intestinal inflammatory status. In herpresentation, “Thymol promotes theintestinal barrier function of Caco-2 cells,”Dr. Ester Grilli, a professor at the Universityof Bologna – School of Veterinary Medicine, will explore how this data can be used tosupport the “intestinal health-enhancer”mode of action of thymol-based productsin animal nutrition.

Ingredient solutionsBeyond additives, nutritionists are alwayslooking for new research and formulationinsights regarding the use of novelingredients. For example, corn price volatility and

availability has threatened thecompetitiveness and sustainability enjoyedby poultry over other protein. FusionBiosystems’ David Akinde believes in thehuge untapped potential of cassava as aningredient to reduce – or even eliminate thecorn inclusion – in broiler feeding. Though cassava does have its strengths,

it also poses the challenge of poor nutrientlevels and the presence of cyanogens, which causes cyanide poisoning in animalswhen present beyond threshold limits. Toovercome these issues, recent studies lookat the use of free methionine as thiolprecursor for in vivo detoxification ofcyanide. The research suggests nonegative effect on growth, carcass yieldand meat quality parameters when cornwas completely replaced in the presenceof increased ingestion of methionine. Couldcassava completely replace corn underpractical feed formulation? Akinde willexplore this possibility in his talk, “Cassavaas a surrogate for corn – how high can wego in broiler diets?”From raw soy bean to soy protein isolate,

the various steps of processing affect thecharacter of the end product. Tounderstand the influence of the varioussteps in processing enables the feedformulator to better create a diet with thenecessary dietary benefits for the animal inquestion. Digestibility of the protein is notmerely a calculation factor to be used informulation to obtain the correct level ofdigestible amino acids, but also a tool toreduce undigested protein and reduce guthealth stress. This approach enablesremoval of causes for gut health issues, which in turn does not have to be treated

conferences

by antibiotics or overcome by addition ofother perhaps expensive solutions. Duringthe presentation, “The effect of processedproteins on swine nutrition,” Lars SangillAndersen, nutritionist, Hamlet Protein A/S,will discuss which approaches should beused when evaluating digestibility of rawmaterials for piglets. On a related note, Dr. Mike Varley, director

of The Pig Technology Company, will explorethe principles and practice of feeding pre-and post-weaned piglets, the elements ofnutritional delivery and gut healthmanagement. Significant changes in theseapplications have altered feed ingredientutilized and the practice of formulationitself. The withdrawal of antibiotics, use ofalternative energy ingredients and theintroduction of novel protein and fibersources offer nutritionists new opportunitiesand challenges. Varley will address theseissues and speculate about the future ofpiglet diets in “Pre- and post-weaned pigletnutrition: a modern approach fortomorrow’s production landscape.”

Biomass Wood PelletingConference 2017Production technology for the pelleting of bio-degradable materials for biomass pellets.

Both the European and world pelletmarkets have grown at an impressive ratein recent years. Since 2000, annual worldpellet production has increased from justunder 2 million tonnes, to around 29 milliontonnes in 2015. Close to half of the pelletsproduced globally are from the EuropeanUnion. However, great challenges remainahead for European market players, forexample, ensuring sustainable marketgrowth, improving overall sector profitabilityand risk management or overcoming newtechnical challenges. Pellets currently offeran efficient, reliable and sustainable energyalternative to the European consumer, andthis must continue!Against this backdrop, the European

Biomass Association (AEBIOM) and itssectorial network the European PelletCouncil (EPC) will host an International

Pellet Conference on the 14th of June,2017 in Cologne, Germany. The “EuropeanPellet Future” conference will be held inconjunction with the FVG Select 2017.During this conference, technical andfinancial topics will be addressed, includingbut not limited to; pellet quality, pelletsafety, cost and energy optimisation andrisk management. One of the benefits ofattending such AEBIOM conferences is to

receive updates on ongoing EU legislativeprocesses as well as statistical informationon bioenergy. This provides participantswith a comprehensive overview of the mostrecent advancements in the sector. The full conference programme will be

available shortly.

ConcettiMAP Bagging Equpment.Concetti, Bastia Umbra, Italy, has

introduced Modified AtmospherePackaging (MAP), to their fully automaticbagging systems, but in an interesting andinnovative way. This is designed to help drypet food and animal feed producers offerthe best quality of product and improveprofitability. This technology dramaticallyextends the shelf life of animal feed and petfood, and preserves taste and freshness ineach bag. The Concetti company, a manufacturer of

high quality packaging machinery, has justtested a fully automatic “IGF 1200” with adouble feeding system, designed forgusseted open mouth paper bags withinner PE liner, from 4 to 20 kg. The MAP application designed by

Concetti consists of the replacement of airwith a single gas, like nitrogen or a mixtureof gases, during the entire filling process, not only in the package itself. Then, whilestill under a blanket of nitrogen, a devicecloses and seals the bags tightly. Byreplacing the breathable atmosphere in apackage with a pure gas or a gas mixture, including nitrogen, the shelf life of productscan be significantly extended, helping themlook, smell, and taste good far longer thanthey would otherwise. www.concetti.com

KSE Process Technology B.V.Parts of ALFRA machine 3D printed.KSE Process Technology B.V. started

printing parts in 3D for its ALFRA dosingand weighing systems. At the end of 2016, KSE started using 3D

printed parts for its ALFRA dosing andweighing systems. At first this was chosenbecause it was the quickest solution. “Thedesigns and drawings were ready and thedelivery time of the parts was simply theshortest when printed in 3D”, says MichielWillemse – Manager MechatronicsDevelopment. “In addition to that, the costsfor the 3D parts are competitive comparedto the conventional ways of producing”.This is not the only benefit for KSE. “We

supply various machines, each with itsunique features. This means one and thesame part can differ per machine. By using3D printing, we can produce very flexible. This allows us to deploy developmentsmuch better and faster in a shorter time”,Willemse adds enthusiastically. KSE sees a lot of future opportunities for

3D printing. With a brand new assemblyhall and many product innovations itcontinues to invest in the future to meetcustomer requirements.Founded in 1973, KSE Process

SkovAre your ATEX sensors up to date?Despite an eight-year transition period,

there is still a large group of manufacturerscompletely unaware of the new ATEXdirective and how it affects products beingused in explosive atmospheres.Under ATEX, manufacturers must design

and test components to prevent or minimizethe risk of explosion due to the productionor release of explosive atmospheres.Manufacturers must consider every possibleelectrical or non-electrical source of ignition. DOL 46R ATEX from dol-sensors a/s is

one of the world’s first products in itscategory to comply with the newest ATEXdirective, 2014/34/EU.With the approvals, ATEX zone 20, 21 and

22 (dust), DOL 46R is ideally suited to beused in applications where dust poses apotentially hazardous atmosphere, such asfor example feed mills, silos and conveyors.ATEX zone 20 is the strictest, as explosivematerial is continuously present.DOL 46R does not require any antistatic

shields or mounting plates when installed ine.g. silos, nor does it require specialconducting glands when installing it.DOL 46R can be used with different

materials, such as grain, flour and wood. With DOL 46R ATEX you can be sure thatyour sensors are up to date.

STIFIntroducting the VIGILEX range from STIF, anew flameless device designed for explosionprotection, to meet your safety requirements

To protect indoor machinery the VIGILEXVQ guarantees flameless venting and dustprotection. No burnt or unburnt dustpasses off. Even high temperature isreduced to a minimum. During normalventing an explosion is freely discharged, allowing flames and dust to exit from theprocess vessel. When the process islocated indoors, ducts are generally usedto convey the explosion outside thebuilding. However, the cost and options ofimplementing explosion vents and ductsare limited. The VIGILEX VQ is an ATEX approved

flameless explosion vent (EC CertificateNumber : INERIS 14ATEX0049X ). It isused with great effect indoors andoutdoors. It is the best and easiest solutioninstead of cumbersome and expensivesolutions with pipe installations to the openair. The VIGILEX VQ provides low pressureresistance effectively eliminating flame andheat emissions thereby easing indoorinstallation and positioning of relevantmachinery. The VIGILEX VQ is rectangular and

supplied with a standard rectangularbursting panel. The VIGILEX VQ is availablein different sizes and is delivered with aburst sensor. The Vigilex VQ is certified bythe French notified body INERIS and willcomply with the latest standard forFlameless Explosion Venting Devices : EN16009 : 2011.

industry news

Decrease in EU compound feed production in 2016 (-1%) A further drop expected in 2017 due to avian

influenza and environmental restrictions.

Compound feed productionestimates for 2016The industrial compound feed productionfor farmed animals[1] in the EU-28[2] in 2016reached an estimated level of 153.4 mio. t,i.e. 1% less than in 2015, according todata provided by FEFAC members. As regards cattle feed, the picture is

extremely contrasted throughout Europe. The Netherlands or Poland have seen theirproduction of cattle feed increase by morethan 8%, whereas France moved in theopposite direction, reflecting the divergingnational milk production following theabolishment of dairy quotas. Overall, dueto low milk prices, dairy farmers were notencouraged to purchase high performingfeed to maximise milk production, resultingin an aggregate downturn of EU cattle feedproduction of 1.5%. Although poultry feed production was

expected to perform rather well in 2016,the Avian Influenza outbreak at the end of2016 severely impacted several poultryproducing regions of Europe, in particularFrance where a 4% decrease in poultryfeed production was recorded. All in all, EUpoultry feed production remained almoststable and is still the leading segment ofEU industrial compound feed production, well ahead of pig feed.On the pig feed side, after two years of

moderate growth, the productiondecreased by 1.5% in 2016. This canpartly be explained by the effects of AfricanSwine Fever in Eastern Europe, whichweighed heavily on the development ofpigmeat production, but also by lowmarket prices for pigmeat in the first half of2016 and large availability of feed gradecereals at low prices which benefitted on-farm mixing. For the third year in a row, Poland was

one of the best performing countries, with

annual growth of +4.7%, boosted by thedemand for poultry feed which has turnedPoland into the largest poultry producingcountry in the EU. The Netherlands, boosted by the demand for dairy feed, recorded a 1% growth vs. 2015. Germany,Spain and Belgium saw their totalcompound feed production fall by 1-2%,whereas France saw its production dropby 4%. Germany strengthened its positionas leading EU country in terms of totalcompound feed production, ahead ofSpain and France. The final estimate and detailed

breakdown of the 2016 figures will beissued in June 2017.

Market outlook for 2017FEFAC market experts are relativelypessimistic concerning industrialcompound feed production in 2017. The dairy sector still needs to recover

from the severe milk price crisis, therebylikely negatively impacting the dairy herd in2017, while also national adjustments tomeet environmental criteria play a role. These developments may lead to a furtherreduction of cattle feed production by 2%.The expected stabilisation of pigmeatproduction in Europe could induce amoderate reduction in demand for pig feed(-1%). Poultry exports will continue to beaffected by Avian Influenza, thus puttingpressure on EU poultry production andsubsequently the feed segment (-0.5%).Overall, this would lead to a further 1%decrease in compound feed production in2017 vs. 2016. A number of parameters will evidently

affect this outlook. The evolution ofoutbreaks of Avian Influenza and AfricanSwine Fever will be decisive, in particular interms of EU export capacities preservation. The scope for reestablishment of Russianimports of EU pork as a result of WTOconclusions on the illegality of the Russiansanitary ban introduced in 2014, may onthe other hand offer some opportunities forcertain EU countries, although it is unlikelythat this development will lead to action inthe short term. This case is one amongmany political factors that undoubtedly will

affect the market in the EU and worldwide.Cereals market quotations are now on a

moderate upward trend, after reaching arecord low level in autumn 2016. However, the relatively comfortable level of endstocks at global level, the good prospectson the South American harvest and thegood state of EU winter cereals plantingsshould maintain prices at a low level in thefirst half of 2017. As regards soybeans, signals from

South America are positive both in termsof acreage and yields for the springharvest. An additional positive indicationis predicted increase in the US soybeanacreage for 2017. Nevertheless, with thedemand for soybeans and soybeanproducts increasing at global level by4% per year, the balance sheet remainstight.

Notes1. FEFAC, the European Compound FeedManufacturers’ Federation, represents 24national Associations in 23 EU MemberStates as well as Associations inSwitzerland, Turkey, Serbia, Russia andNorway with observer/associate memberstatus. The European compound feedindustry employs over 100,000 persons onapp. 3,500 production sites often in ruralareas, which offer few employmentopportunities.2. Farm animals in the EU 28 consume anestimated 480 million tonnes of feed ayear, of which about 30% are produced bythe compound feed manufacturers.Turnover of the European compound feedindustry is estimated at €50 billion.

Various rapid systems for detection ofdifferent mycotoxins are commerciallyavailable. All of them are suitable for quickand sensitive screening of raw materialsbefore they enter feed mill. Once themycotoxins levels are evaluated in allingredients, contamination level of feed millcan be estimated. This allows the precisecalculation of mycotoxins’ deactivator orbinder needed. It is important to knowwhat the real mycotoxin level is, but thisdoes not offer full solutions. For the complete and most comprehensive

mycotoxin management, it is importantthat results of mycotoxin analyses areaccomplished by information on properdosage of mycotoxin deactivator. Thedosage of mycotoxin deactivator shouldbe calculated properly based on knownmycotoxin challenge. This issue is quitecomplicated but could be solved byNUTRIAD. The first company to offer webapplication – MYCOMAN, which is already

With maximum food safety, 95% lowerenergy costs and user-friendly operationthe new TUBEX hopper scale raises thestandards in precision weighing.Scales play a central role in producing

food and animal feed. Raw material andproduct weights need to be accurate atevery stage of the processing chain todetermine yield and keep costs undercontrol. Bühler has launched afundamentally overhauled generation ofscales with the TUBEX. Benefits includehigh levels of food safety and reducedenergy costs. Large internal areas andstainless steel construction eliminate therisk of product build-up or crosscontamination. No filter material or false-airopening are required which significantlyreduces cleaning time. Together, thesefactors increase efficiency and productquality while reducing overall cost. TUBEX scales are energy-efficient.

Instead of pneumatic cylinders, they usean innovative, electromechanical driveconcept. Super capacitors store energybetween drive cycles and deliver the powerneeded at start-up. As a result, the TUBEXMSDN-L hopper scale reduces ongoingenergy costs by 95%. Smart technologycontinuously monitors all major operatingand service parameters while theintegrated diagnostic system is early torecognizes problems. The user-friendlycontrols are compatible with mobile enddevices. Additionally, thanks to samedimensions TUBEX can replace existingBühler scale systems. The MSDN-Lhopper scale is the first model in the newgeneration to be launched. Differentialscales for free-flowing and non-free-flowingproducts and dosing elements will follow.

A new consultant for Spainjoins the VICTAM teamJuan Acedo-Rico González (Madrid 1957),Agronomic Engineer by UPM, Madrid,Master of Science by UniversityCalifornia, Davis.Since the start of his career 30 years ago,

Juan’s activities have been in the animalfeed industry. He therefore believes that heis capable of finding the right audience, bothexhibitors and visitors, in his home countryof Spain. Juan has chosen to collaboratewith VICTAM as it is they organize the onlyspecialized exhibition and conferencefocused on feed technology, equipment andsupplies for the feed industry. Initially, Juanwill focus on further developing the VICTAMbrand in Spain among feed manufacturersand equipment suppliers. He believes it willbe of interest to them because theirbusiness is developing more and more, notonly in Spain, but also in foreign markets.VICTAM will allow Juan to find newchallenges and business opportunities, both in the local market as well as open upnew opportunities for Spain in foreignregions like the middle east and Asia.

The Feed Industry in Spain continues tobe a growing business, especially for swineand poultry. Export of swine productsreaches high levels close to 45% of theSpanish overall production. Besides this

there is still room to further open up thelocal feed market. Foreign investors suchas Cargill, Nutreco, De Heus and ABN arealready competing in Spain. The pet foodmarket is well developed in Spain and stillgrowing as well through local consumptionand increasing exports. Juan expects thisto continue for the next few years. Theaqua feed production in Spain is limited.Dibaq was the main local producer butfinancial difficulties are limiting them andonly a few foreign companies (Nutreco andBiomar) have some manufacturing capacityin Spain. Still, Juan does expect fishfarming activities to grow on theMediterranean coast and other countries inthe region and he does expect aqua feedmanufacturers to take advantage of this asis shown by new investments in 2017. Juan is a member of FEDNA (Fundación

Española Desarrollo Nutrición Animal).Author of numerous publications on theFeed Business and Animal Nutrition.Associate professor on post-doctoralprograms at UPM, Madrid and CIHEAM. UE.

The VICTAM scholarships: Study the wondrousworld of feed technologyDr. R.K. Kwakkel, Wageningen University& Research, Department of AnimalSciences, Animal Nutrition group,Wageningen, The Netherlands. The continuous high demand for well-

educated animal nutritionists/feedtechnologists over recent years has led theVICTAM Foundation to providescholarships to motivated students whowant to study animal nutrition and conductthesis research in Feed Technology. In thismanner the Foundation aims to contributeto the education of qualified individuals inthe area of feed processing of rawmaterials, feed evaluation and feedtechnology.

Students from Wageningen Universitystudying towards a degree in AnimalSciences are eligible and yearly 2scholarships will be awarded to the mostpromising students. In addition, two furtherscholarships are available for internationalstudents who follow the double degreeprogramme in Animal Nutrition of AarhusUniversity in Denmark and WageningenUniversity in the Netherlands. As part ofthe scholarships, students will be requiredto conduct their major thesis work in thearea of feed technology. For this,Wageningen University maintains aninfrastructure (CARUS process hall)enabling research to be conducted using

the University’s feed processing equipment.Much of the research is focused ondevelopment of effective processes forimproving feed efficiency for productionanimals and influence of processing on thenutritional quality of pet foods.Every year, the VICTAM Foundation

selects up to 10 eligible students and willaward four scholarships, two for MScstudents in Animal Sciences and two fordouble degree students. The VICTAMFoundation invites students to apply eachyear between January and the end ofMarch. For more information please contact:

Revision of the twin screwextruder at WageningenUniversity’s process hallDr. Ir. A.F.B van der Poel, WageningenUniversity & Research, Department ofAnimal Sciences, Animal Nutrition group,Wageningen, The Netherlands.Students of Wageningen University

studying towards a degree in AnimalSciences can specialise in feed technology. The University maintains an infrastructureenabling students to obtain hands-onexperience with various feed processingtechnologies and allow students (MSc andPhD) to conduct research using theUniversity’s feed processing equipment.Much of the research is focused on thedevelopment of effective processes forimproving feed efficiency for productionanimals and the influence of processing onthe nutritional quality of pet foods. The CARUS process hall contains

grinding and mixing equipment, differentextruders, drying equipment as well asspecialized devices such as an infraredheater and air classifier. The twin-screwextruder (MPF50, Baker Perkins, UK) isone of the most used pieces of equipmentin this process hall. Previously used forfood production, this extruder is, becauseof its relatively low capacity (~80 kg/hour),a favourite for students to use in researchprojects. Extrusion technology is used inMSc education in relation to the productionof fish feeds, piglet feeds and pet foods aswell as research projects of PhD students. The twin-screw extruder is in dire need of

a revision as the cooling elements aremalfunctioning and the last sections of theextruder directly before the die are notfunctioning properly, thereby not allowingthe process temperatures to be tightlycontrolled.

The VICTAM Foundation is providingfunds for the revision of the cooling andheating features of the Baker Perkinsextruder so that future MSc and PhDstudents can conduct their researchprojects using this extruder.

profiles – feed ingredients, feed productionand rice & grain processing BUT the eventwill now be called FVG Asia 2018 which isan abbreviation of FIAAP/VICTAM/GRAPAS. When you arrive to visit FVG Asia 2018

next March you should find a lot ofchanges at the BITEC exhibition center asit has undergone major improvements, it

has also been enlarged with moreexhibition halls, food points, restaurantsand coffee bars, etc. We will further develop the new features

introduced at FVG Select this summer:matchmaking and the news room. We willalso introduce more features such as aninteractive online floorplan. Once again there will be a series of

conferences to complement the threeshows, these will be:• The FIAAP Conference 2018• Petfood Forum Asia 2018• Aquafeed Horizons Asia 2018• Global Milling Conference with GRAPAS

Asia 2018• ASEAN Feed & Rice Symposia 2018.Exhibitors will also be given the opportunity

to give technical seminars. Timings andtopics will be subject to change.More detailed information about the 2018

conferences will be available shortly on ourwebsite and in the Autumn/Fall edition ofShowtime. So make a date! The event is on for only

A retrospect of theASEAN events duringFVG Asia 2016As the first edition of the ASEAN FeedSummit proved to be successful in 2014,the summit took place again in 2016during the FIAAP, VICTAM & GRAPAS Asia2016 event. The summit was organized byVictam International BV, sponsored by theVictam Foundation and hosted by the ThaiFeed Mill Manufacturers Association. The Victam Foundation also sponsored

the second ASEAN Feed & RiceSymposium which was also held duringthe FIAAP, VICTAM & GRAPAS Asia 2016event in Bangkok.

ASEAN Feed SummitThe second session of the ASEAN FeedSummit was held on Thursday, March31st, 2016 at the BITEC exhibition centerin Bangkok, Thailand. Held in closed session and chaired by

Mr. Pornsil Patchrintanakul, President ofthe Thai Feed Mill ManufacturersAssociation, and moderated by Ms.Alexandra de Athayde, IFIF ExecutiveDirector, the Summit brought togethersenior feed regulators and industryrepresentatives from Cambodia, Indonesia,Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines,Thailand and Vietnam.Topics for this meeting were feed safety,

security and sustainability in the ASEANbloc for 2016 and beyond. During thediscussion a number of issues wereidentified for further potential co-operation,including capacity development for feedsafety, efforts towards regulatoryharmonization, as well as the need to workwith all stakeholders on agri-food chain oncommon challenges. It is anticipated that there will be a regular

annual Summit/meeting of the newFederation and every second year it will

coincide with the FIAAP, VICTAM &GRAPAS Asia event.

The ASEAN Feed & RiceSymposiumThe VICTAM Foundation also sponsoredthe second ASEAN Feed & RiceSymposium and this was held onWednesday, March 30th, 2016 during theFIAAP, VICTAM & GRAPAS Asia 2016event in Bangkok. Dr. La Van Kinh, DDG – President of the

Vietnam Feed Association was thechairman for this symposium. A fullauditorium of industry VIPs listenedattentively to the keynote speeches whichwere delivered by: • Dr. Thanabadee Rodsom, Acting Director

of Animal Feed and Veterinary Products Control Division, Department of LivestockDevelopment, Thailand.

• Ms. Alexandra de Athayde, Executive Director, International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF)

• Mr. Robin Ong, Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM)

• Mr Du Van Pham, Senior Agricultural Officer (Rice Expert)

• Dr. Katinka de Balogh, Livestock Policy Officer F.A.O. Regional Office for Asia and PacificThe topics included issues such as

recent developments in the global feedindustry, the development of supply of rawmaterials in the ASEAN region, rice andrice based cropping system in ASEANcountries and Feed & Food Security.

The next ASEAN Feed & Rice Symposia will be held during FVG Asia 2018 from March 27 – 29, 2018

Prof. dr. G.P.J. Janssens, Department ofAnimal Nutrition, Genetics and Ethology,Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, GhentUniversity, Merelbeke, Belgium.Fibres are a very diverse family of dietary

compounds that have different functions indigestion. Determining fibre types in all theirdiversity provides highly interesting scientificinsights, but implies an amount of labourand cost that cannot be afforded underpractical conditions. Yet, the presentanalytical methods for fibre such as TDFseem insufficient to grasp their main actionsin the gut. One of the reasons is that itdoes not include fibrous matter from animalorigin. Therefore, a new Fibrous Matter (FM)method should overcome these issues. Inparticular in pet food, the animal-derivedfibre has been overlooked, whereas thisfibre fraction – being protein – is likelysensitive to feed processing conditions. Many proteins are prone to cross-linking

and Maillard reaction, depending on theapplied processing conditions, and will thusbecome insensitive to the host’s digestiveenzymes, therefore losing their function asprotein source, but starting to act as fibres. In contrast, some proteins that are initiallyresistant to digestive enzymes, becomemore digestible after processing, hencelosing their fibrous character. It is well-documented that these animal fibre fractionsare capable of modulating the intestinalmicrobiome and its fermentative profile. To allow a better estimation of the fibrous

behaviour of pet foods, a regressionformula will be built that provides aprediction of the real final fibre concentrationof a product based on simple, easilyavailable characteristics such as nutrientconcentrations (crude protein, FM fractions)and processing conditions (temperature, pressure). If successful, this predictionformula will allow feed/food producers tomonitor and, therefore, target the final fibrecontent of end products, and have a betterestimation of the diet’s protein availability.
