This is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from Washington DC, the capital of the USA. Camp David is in the coun- tryside. It is often used as a place where presidents can meet with their advisors or with leaders of other countries. Over the last 70 years, all American presidents have made use of Camp David. Camp David is also a place where im- portant meetings can take place in secret. For example, for two weeks in 1978 se- cret meetings were hosted at Camp Dav- id by the American president at the time, Jimmy Carter. The talks involved Anwar Sadat, who was Egypt’s president, and Menachem Begin, the leader of Israel. Later the two countries signed their first peace treaty. Today, these secret talks are known as the Camp David Accords. ‘G8’ is short for ‘Group of Eight’. The original members were the six coun- tries that in 1975 had the world’s larg- est economies and elected their leaders democratically. The members were the USA, Japan, Germany, France, the UK, and Italy. Canada joined in 1976 and the name changed to the G7. The G7 became the G8 when Russia joined in 1998. Russia held its first dem- ocratic election in 1991 after the Rus- sian-led Soviet Union collapsed. Then Russia’s economy was small. But the G7 countries invited Russia to become a member to help with its sudden change from a communist system of government to a democratic one.
