WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATED BY STUDENTS AND STAFF As part of the World Book Day celebrations on Thursday 5 March, Collingwood’s students and staff Dropped Everything and Read for a solid 25 minutes from 9.05am until 9.25am!

On the day, all students, no less than , dropped everything and indulged in reading. In PE, Catering, Maths, Science, English - you name it , the College fell silent!

A couple of teachers adopted different approaches:

Displaying a book on the white board allowing the whole class to read silently as the pages scrolled through!

PRC used religious books A few students and staff read ‘the modern way’ on tablets.

All of these techniques are great to promote reading. CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Coronavirus

Given the extensive media attention on this subject I know that people are understandably concerned about Coronavirus and the possible impact on students, school closures and exams. Further to my letter of last week can I clarify the following points which I hope will help reassure parents/carers and students:

We have no confirmed cases of Coronavirus at the College. If we do get a confirmed case then Public Health England will contact us immediately and advise us accordingly. We will follow their advice to the letter. Until then we are advising all staff and students that it is ‘business as normal’.

In terms of exams, the Boards are telling schools to assume no changes. If there are changes they are assuring us they will be as fair as possible to all candidates and again we will follow their advice.

If the government do eventually decide to close schools we have contingency plans in place and all departments have plans in place to support students in all years with on-line/distance learning. We have had successful experience of doing this in the past for snow closures, although this time it may be for a more sustained period.

Can I remind any concerned parents and carers that they can access the Coronavirus Information Page on the Parent Portal. We’re consolidating all the latest advice and guidance there as well as contact details for the DofE helpline which is another source of advice for parents (plus staff and students).

YEAR 8 STUDENT EXCELS IN ATHLETICS Harrison Taylor (8D) is making amazing progress in athletics. He is a member of CADAC (Camberley and District athletics Club) and has recently been selected to be part of the Surrey County Under 13's Sportshall team in a regional competition on Sunday 22 March. If the team are successful it could lead to being at the Nationals in Sheffield in April. This is an excellent achievement - well done Harrison. Surrey County athletics have invited Harrison to attend their end of year awards ceremony on Friday 3 April in Leatherhead. Harrison has won the most points in the U13's for the 2019/2020 Sportshall season (he competed in three competitions over the winter, winning two and being joint first for the other). Harrison is a great role model for his year group. He always tries his best and gives great support to the rest of the team. We're very proud of him at Collingwood College and especially as a PE teacher being his Year Manager.

Additional INSET Day Parents and Carers will be aware of the huge amount of change happening in schools at the moment especially in connection with the curriculum. Teaching staff are spending significant amounts of time reviewing and adapting content and mapping curriculum material which is particularly time-consuming. It has therefore been agreed by the Chair of Governors that the College will have an additional INSET day this year to provide some much-needed time to further develop this work. The date of this additional day will be

Friday 26 June.

Exam certificate postage payment is available on ParentPay. Please ensure payment is made as soon as possible to ensure your child receives their exam certificates for the summer 2020 season. This is of particular importance for those students in Year 11 and 13 who are leaving the College. To avoid certificates being lost in transit or left crumpled at the bottom of a school bag, we encourage payment to be made for Year 9 and 10 too. For those that make payment for postage, exam certificates are usually despatched in December using Royal Mail’s ‘Signed For’ service. Certificates will be required by future employers and further education institutes. If you don’t have your certificates when you need them in later life, the exam boards can provide a replacement statement of results but it is very costly.

Collingwood College organised and hosted the British Science Week on behalf of the Science Learning Centre on Wednesday 12 February. The event was hosted and delivered by Mrs Puri and was open to Primary and Secondary School teachers to attend in order to obtain ideas and resources for their own schools. The aim of the evening was to address how to raise the profile of Science and STEM across the school, widen students’ experiences beyond the classroom and opportunities for cross curricula, and to build on practical activities for hands-on learning.

The event was attended by Primary and Secondary school teachers. Several students from Crawley Ridge Junior School also attended the event, accompanied by their parents. The students and teachers really enjoyed the evening and took part in different hands-on activities from making bath bombs, revealing fingerprinting on different materials, Don’t Tip the Ship to creating astronaut hovercrafts. The evening also helped to develop students’ problem-solving, team-building and communication skills.

The students were a credit to their school and demonstrated good understanding of Science. These are some comments made by the teachers and students on completion of the event. Students comments from ‘Crawley Ridge Junior School’: “I loved the activities and I now understanding how detectives use finger printing.”

“I really enjoyed the hovercraft activity and want to be an astronaut when I grow up.” Teachers comments: “Thank you very much for the presentations and yesterday’s event. I learnt a lot about STEM and crest awards.” Celine Heeney - Gordon’s School “Thank you for yesterday; it was interesting to see the children engaging with the activities.” Sarah Philips - Frimley Junior School

“It was really useful watching your presentation and talking to you! “

Collingwood’s Dance Club are competing in ‘The Great Big Dance Off’ at the New Theatre in Oxford next week, and we are so excited! This will mark Collingwood’s first ever schools’ dance competition! Our theme is ‘The Dark Side of Alice in Wonderland’, where Alice is controlled, manipulated and ultimately “taken and turned” by the characters in Wonderland. The girls have been working so hard for months now and I am very proud of what they have achieved. We are going to go out and perform to the best of our ability and show everyone our enjoyment of dance.

PE EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS The PE Department have noticed recently that fewer and fewer students have football boots as part of their PE kit. In a bid to improve standards and safety in PE, we would like to inform parents and carers that the inclusion of moulded or studded football boots as part of our students’ PE kit is highly recommended and that our website guidance to parents has been adjusted to reflect this. Experience has taught us that students wearing moulded or studded footwear appropriately chosen depending on the conditions outside, significantly improves their ability to change direction, accelerate and stay on their feet, therefore increasing the quality of performance of our students and incidentally, keeping them safer too. Further to this, we know that outlets such as Sports Direct and Decathlon are selling perfectly suitable pairs for between £20-£30. What we also realise as a department that as students become increasingly more suitably prepared for sport outside, that the need for shin pads (that we also highly recommend) is in turn going to increase and once again, as per the letter we released earlier this year, those above mentioned outlets are selling perfectly suitable pairs for between £15-£20. What we have noticed as well, is that for those students that do have a pair of football boots, their trainers remain clean for indoor sports such as Badminton, Basketball or Circuit Training, etc. We feel that understanding the difference between types of footwear used for both indoor and outdoor activities, is an important part of the way we prepare our PE students for leading healthy, active lifestyles after life at Collingwood. We do appreciate that equipping students for school can be an expensive undertaking.

Mr Beer - Head of PE Department
