Assessments are given in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. This year, W.A. students will complete the assessments online, except for the Year 3 Writing assessment, which will still be completed on paper. The NAPLAN brochure, sent home this week, to the Year 3s and 5s gives more information about NAPLAN. The NAPLAN assessments are one of the methods that schools use to determine the achievement of its students and the effectiveness of the academic program. The program will run for 9 weeks and cater for all students in years K-6. At the end of the dance sessions there will be a concert to showcase the students’ dancing expertise. This will occur in Week 10 of term 2. As Edu Dance is part of the Physical Education program, it is expected that all students will participate. Mural Design Workshop On Tuesday and Wednesday, around fifty of our students from years 2 to 6 took part in our Mural Design Workshop run by artist Peter Ryan. The students got to tap into their creative side and come up with some amazing ideas and concepts that Mr Ryan will now put together in the final design. The Mural will be painted by Mr Ryan at Sorrento Beach later this term. We will let you know the when the painting begins and parents may wish to take their children down after school to see their ideas come to life.

Year 5 Swimming Lessons ‘What I think of Swimming’ This year I am in Year 5 which means we go swimming at the beach with the Year 6s. We don’t go by bus to the beach because it is only a 15 minute walk. The walk to the beach is usually a nice walk but sometimes it can be not as nice because of the heat. One of the times we walked to the beach it was 35 degrees. When we get there, depending how good we are at swimming we will go into a group and we walk into the water, it is freezing cold but only for a second then it’s good. Once when we finished the lesson we walk back to school. By Ollie Year 5 Room 10 ‘Why I like Swimming’ I like swimming because for the 2 weeks of swimming lessons you get to walk down to the magnificent beach and walk back to school. That’s not the only reason why I like swimming. I like swimming because you can see the beautiful ocean and don’t sweat if you have no friends in your group because you always make new friends. I also like swimming because I love riding the waves and building sandcastles. So I hope this gives a reason to love swimming. By Jack Year 5 Room 10

Mini Lit Room The Mini Lit room is a bright, colourful and calm space students come to do an early intervention Literacy program called Mini Lit. The main components covered are letter/sound knowledge, decoding skills, text reading and story book reading focusing on comprehension and vocabulary understanding.

Clean-up Australia Day

Next Wednesday, March 6th, from 1-2.30pm the whole school will be involved in Clean Up Australia. Each class will be responsible for cleaning up a section of the school and surrounding parklands. The two year 5 & 6 classes, rooms 8 & 9 will be walking to the beach to clean up a section of the carparks and footpaths, so those classes will need parent helpers. Parents of other students are welcome to come and help on the day. If your child has gardening gloves they would like to use, please send them on the day. Regards, Ms. Pauline Floate, Organising Teacher. The Community may also be interested to know that there is clean up Australia events on this weekend in the Mullaloo area. See details below.

(meet at northern carpark)

Mrs Middleton is the year five teacher in room 10. She has been moved by the warm welcome she has received this year and is very impressed with both the hard working, dedicated staff at Mullaloo Beach Primary and the tight knit community here. She has been teaching middle and upper primary classes for twenty years. She had a fantastic time exploring Western Australia when she graduated, teaching in the country from places as far and wide as Bridgetown, Fitzroy Crossing, Badgingarra and Kalgoorlie. For the last thirteen years she has taught at Sorrento Primary School. She believes that a classroom is a special place, where class members come together, work as a team, support each other and that each and every student should be treasured as everyone is unique and they have something important to contribute. Whilst continuing to build literacy and numeracy skills is vital, she also believes being creative is just as crucial and that learning environments should be fun and continue to spark an interest in the amazing world in which we live. Mrs. Middleton is married to her husband Anthony and has two children, Emma and Thomas.
