Editorial - Contemporary issues from the network
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
the second year of the BioNanoNet association (Verein), the owner of the BioNanoNet
GmbH, started in July and we are very happy that the number of members and supporters
of this valuable organisation increased: starting with 14 organisations when founding the
association on July 8th 2014, we now have already 22 organisational members which shows
a significant increase of more than 50% within the first operative year. The interaction within
this community especially during the meetings in April and September, discussing creative
ideas and visions in the focus areas nanotoxicology, sensortechnologies as well as in
health-safety-medicine, led and will lead in the near future to the establishment of important
initiatives and brands:
(i) NanoSafety-Austria: since 2009 BioNanoNet contributes to a significant number
of activities which are taking place in Europe to increase safety of nano-related
products and applications. The already established national group NanoSafety-
Austria is the national hub in this field and is well integrated in the European
NanoSafety-framework. The key role of our group is already visible by the fact
that 3 HORIZON 2020-projects have been funded, having BioNanoNet on board
to develop the nano-safety strategy.
(ii) NanoMedicine-Austria including NanoPharma: In our Newsletter this spring
(1/2015) we highlighted the international initiative towards a European NanoMed-
icine clustering in which the “NanoMedicine-Austria” will become one of the na-
tional hubs. Hence, we kindly invite you to save the date of the “NanoMedicine-
Austria public meeting” which will be held on April 5th 2016, 4 p.m. in Krems. Main
objective of this initiative is to strengthen cooperation of Austrian nanomedicine

THE WOOD POLYMER COMPOSITES DIVISION In the wood polymer composites division, the research focus is on composites from renew-able resources. Both thermoplastic as well as thermoset polymers are used as matrices. As reinforcements, natural fibers and wood, but also inorganic and synthetic fibers and fillers, respectively, are employed. Numerous different products can be made from those compo-sites via processes like extrusion, injection molding or 3D-printing. Besides the manifold options for shaping these materials, it is also possible to tailor their property profiles. With our unique know how, we can even produce complex parts from high-tech-ceramics based on renewable resources. Research topics: Three research teams, which are supported by an inter-divisional „analytics and methods“-team, carry out the R&D activities.
Injection Moulding & Material Development (IMM)
Process, Simulation & Modeling (PSM)
Fibres, Carbon & Ceramics (FCC)
Analytics & Methods (A&M) The IMM team focuses on the development of innovative biocomposites and natural fiber reinforced polymers for injection molding applications. Ecological considerations, character-ization and selection of raw materials, and the respective compounding and final shaping processes are the core areas. The FCC team deals with innovative fiber reinforced composites, carbon materials and ce-ramics. One focus is on the characterization and modification of fiber surfaces, and the in-vestigation of structure-property relationships for the optimization of the fiber/matrix interac-tion. The topic “carbonization” comprises the production of carbon fibers as well as porous, activated carbon materials based on renewable resources, like wood, lignin, and cellulose, respectively. Furthermore, special thermoset-based composites are used to create silicon carbide-ceramics for structural applications. The PSM team develops and optimizes extrusion processes. The enhancement of simula-tion- and modeling tools for mixing and plastification procedures is a core area. Further-more, the research focus is on coextrusion, foaming, and the production of filaments for FDM (fused deposition modeling) 3D-printing from biomaterials. The A&M team supports and cross-links all areas in terms of analytics and method devel-opment. Methods & Equipment In the wood polymer composites division, R&D projects from the lab- up to the pilot plant scale can be realized using own equipment. In addition, equipment of the JKU is available via various joint projects.

BioNanoNet project presentations
Gold Graphene Nano Composite Sensors for Biomole-cule Detection (NaCoS)
Within the 10. Call “FTI Initiative Produktion der Zukunft – TRANSNATIONALE Kooperative F&E
Projekte“, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, Health & Environment Department,
member of BioNanoNet, has successfully proposed the NaCoS project. Based on the preparation of
China-Austria-calls in the nano-field which was supported by BioNanoNet, this project has been
submitted addressing the topic “Nanoimprintlithographe / Graphene / Sensors/ Roll to Roll / Additive
manufacturiung / 3 D Printing” and will run 18 months till March 2017. The consortium is led by the
AIT, further partners are SCIO Holding GmbH (AT) and Shanghai University, Nanoscience & Tech-
nology Research Center (China).
Abstract
The decentralization of the health care system driven by the demographic change creates a strong
demand for biosensors that enable molecular diagnostics outside of laboratories at the point-of-
care. Among the various molecular detection methods, electrochemical biosensors are most appeal-
ing because of their potential for cost-effective and flexible production. In particular, the progress in
printing technologies is opening new possibilities for the fabrication of electronic components in
combination with functional materials, which are key components in biosensors. At present, single
parameter glucose tests for diabetes monitoring still represent the most prominent domain for print-
ed biosensors. However, a wide range of other applications at the point-of-care is currently emerg-
ing such as the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, which in 2010 have been the cause of
death for 38% of the Chinese and 44% of the Austrian population. These applications typically re-
quire the detection of several different biomarkers. Key requirements for a successful commerciali-
zation of electrochemical biosensors therefore are that they can be fabricated entirely by printing
processes and that they are capable of measuring multiple molecular biomarkers simultaneously
with suitable sensitivity and selectivity.
The core innovation of the NaCoS project is a novel approach for the modular fabrication of multi-
parameter biosensors with application specific biofunctionalisation taking full advantage of printing
technologies. This modular approach will facilitate the flexible production of biosensors using off-
page 19 of 44
NEWS 03/2015
the-shelf electrode arrays without the need for a multi-step biofunctionalisation of the electrodes.
More precisely, in the NaCoS project we will realize electrochemical nanosensors for the quantifica-
tion of three biomarkers (CRP, BNP and thrombin) relevant for the diagnosis and treatment of cardi-
ovascular diseases as application example.
For the fabrication of the electrodes screen printing will be explored, as it is compatible with roll-to-
roll processing for mass production at a later stage. Printing the working electrodes, the reference
electrodes, the insulation layers and the liquid confinement borders will be investigated to enable
the integration with subsequent biofunctionalization by inkjet printing of nanocomposites.
Aiming at the realisation of an electrochemical multi-parameter biosensor concept which meets the
requirements for successful commercialization, this cross-border research project brings together
complementary expertise in the areas of printed electrodes (SCI), nanocomposite materials (SHU),
biofunctionalisation and bioinkjet printing (AIT). The cooperation between SHU and the Austrian
partners will strengthen the scientific cooperation between China and Austria.

Project MIOMI - The microcosm in and around us: microorganisms on surfaces in medicine and industry
Microorganisms are the most common living organisms on earth, however, the general
awareness of the influence of microbes on humans both in medical or technological context
is limited. This project enables young students particularly with immigrant background in the
region of south Burgenland (Austria) from elementary school to high school to explore the
role of microorganisms by hands-on experiments. The workshops include interdisciplinary
experiments and problem solving and will focus on the diverse effects of microorganisms
and their attachment on surfaces in medicine and industry. This will be supported by coop-
eration with regional and international innovation companies. Following the workshops, the
educational activities and material will be further adapted in a second implementation phase
in order to achieve a sustainable integration of activities in the curriculum (school lesson) to
launch multidisciplinary projects and facilitate peer-learning.
The project engages young students between seven and eighteen years of age in hands-on
experiments covering e.g. the following research questions:
• Where can we find microorganisms in our environment? • Which organisms can be found around us?
• Which antibiotic resistance levels are exhibited by the microbes?
• Which surface properties contribute to colonization by microorganisms?
• How can we prevent surface colonization by microorganisms? • Which applications of nanotechnology can prove useful for our lives?
Age-dependant background information and first training in basic techniques in the field of
microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or chemistry will be provided in hands-on
sessions that take place in the school laboratory/class room or the laboratories of the Uni-
versity of Applied Sciences in Graz.

three thematic sessions, sensortechnology, nanotoxicology and health-safety-medicine, the
people were deeply involved in intensive discussions about how to collaborate and add val-
ue addressing common goals, how to overcome barriers (e.g. in technology transfer, stand-
ardisation, along the innovation process), and in which fields of application the potential of
bio-/nanotechnologies can be useful. The huge number of interesting topics collected on
the first day could be summarized towards a plan of activities to be followed in the next
working period. Once again we thank all participants for your valuable contributions and
hope that you perceive the time you spent at the meeting as inspiring for future collabora-
tions.
