President’s Message Hello Friends,
WOW, what a summer we had! The ladies of the Women In The Wild pulled off yet another amazing
day. I had zero complaints and received dozens of 5 star ratings. If you didn’t sign up this year you
missed a great time. The great news is, it is coming back again in 2019! Here’s an idea: sign up your
wife, girlfriend, or daughter for next year’s event (18 and older) it would be a great gift idea and it’s
always the second Saturday of August.
ALERT!!! THE WEST CALN TURKEY FAIR IS BACK! NOVEMBER 10TH DOORS OPEN AT 6:00 START AT 7:00 PM
TICKETS $1.00 EACH OR SIX FOR $5.00
Turkeys, Door Prizes, Refreshments, B.Y.O.B.
This Is A West Caln Family-Friendly Event, Open to The Public!
If you haven’t been to the club recently, you will notice a lot of changes. We’ve installed several new
safety barriers, both on the lower and upper ranges. There is a new 21 foot or 7-yard pistol only shooting
area, this area is designed to help those who desire a shorter range and is great for those shorter barrels,
concealed carry style pistols.
As always, SAFETY is our number one goal, PERIOD. A list of rules
and regulations is posted for your viewing at the new backstop. If you
have any questions, please give me or the head range master a call.
Our contact information is listed on the website WCSPORTSMEN.ORG.
While we are still doing upgrades to range, please be courteous to the
workers. Please check the website for alerts or closures due to
excavation or construction.
JUNIOR RIFLE; yes, believe it or not, it’s approaching that time again.
Responsible guardians can bring their child, grandchild, niece, nephew,
friend’s child (you get the idea) between the ages of 8-18. Legal
guardian’s will need to sign a permission release. These shoots take
place indoors at THE CLUB, every Friday night in January, February,
March, then we hold a banquet for them in April. What a great learning
experience for the children and bonding experience for all. Contact Lisa
at [email protected] .
Thank You & God Bless
Darryl N. Barber, President

The NEW 7 YARD RANGE! submitted by your newsletter editor
Beginner pistol shooters no longer need be intimidated by the 25 yard distance at the lower range. The
new 7 yard range, appended to the existing facilities in the upper range, is complete and ready for use!
West Caln Sportsmen’s Club hosts NRA classes in our indoor range throughout the year, shooting
primarily off the 7 yard line. West Caln club members who attended these classes were limited to
practicing [what they learned at the 7 yard indoor line] at our 25 yard lower pistol range. For a beginner
pistol shooter, it is a big change from learning at 7 yards and only being able to practice at 25 yards.
The idea of adding a 7 yard range was conceived mid-2016. The Executive Board supported the small
committee that formed to bring this idea into reality. With financial restraint in mind, the costs and
construction were born over two years.
Sixteen yards of concrete were used for the footers and slab. The eight inch thick baffles are full of
crushed stone. And, approximately 35 tons of dirt were added to the area. As Darryl said in his
“President’s Message”: “Safety is our number one goal, PERIOD”. Enjoy, and be safe in, this new range!

WOMEN IN THE WILDWOMEN IN THE WILD
submitted by Joyce Heisler
It was a memorable day for Women in the WildWomen in the Wild at the West Caln Sportsman’s Club
on August 11th. The forecast for the day was rain, but the stormy weather we have had
all summer was not going to put a damper on the festivities or the fun. Allison Irwin
and Deb Laird (co-chairs of the WITW Committee) and all of the instructors did an
excellent job adapting to any changes to class location or format.
The ten introductory level classes offered throughout the day required no prior
knowledge and all equipment was provided by the Club and its designated instructors.
The classes this year included: Archery, Essential Oils Rollers, Filleting & Frying a
Fish Over a Fire, Horse Riding & Grooming, Introduction to Shooting, Kayaking, Knot
Tying, Orienteering, Self Defense & Situational Awareness, and Women’s Issues in the
Wilderness.

Firearms Training
WCSC NRA instructor team
Basic Pistol June & September 2018
The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course was held at the club in June and again in September. NRA certified instructors taught nearly a dozen and a half students, men and women ranging in age from 21 to 76, many of whom had never shot a handgun prior to the class. Due to the high instructor-to-student ratio, students were able to receive personal attention and instruction while learning about pistol parts, operation, ammunition, safety and shooting fundamentals. At the conclusion of these two courses, most of the students continued on to the next course in the series, NRA Basics of Personal Protection In The Home.
Personal Protection Inside the Home June, July & September 2018
NRA Basics of Personal Protection Inside the Home is an eight hour NRA-certified class that exposes students to various basic defensive shooting techniques used in the home for defense. Across the three sessions, half a dozen women and nearly a dozen men learned that no single style of shooting works for every individual or situation, but safety is always paramount in firearm handling.

RangeMaster Workdays
submitted by Mike Woldman
The rangemaster workday or task assignment was started two years ago and has proven to be a success.
Previously, rangemasters signed up for a 5 hour (10 am to 3 pm) assignment to supervise the ranges on
a selected weekend day of their choice. Now every member who wants to shoot on our ranges at their
own schedule, must take the required rangemaster safety/training course offered by our club. Any mem-
ber who has not taken this safety/training course and wants to use our ranges, must be accompanied by
a member who has completed the course to oversee and be responsible for their activities on the range.
In place of the 5 hour supervisor duty, we have replaced that with a required workday or approved task
assignment.
Our monthly workday on the first Saturday running April through November is the most popular, re-
quires the largest number of volunteers and greatly enhances the appearance and upkeep of our facili-
ties and grounds. These activities not only save the club money (allowing us to keep our annual dues
low) but allow members to get to know other members and work for a common goal. Some of the major
work items completed this year so far, include:
Painting indoor range, meeting room, bathrooms, office and doors,
Clean trophies,
Remove/dispose of debris on the 100 yard range (3 months) and remove some trees so equipment can
place clean fill and raise the elevation of the backstop,
Power wash tables, chairs and exterior of our building,
Paint old clubhouse exterior and interior,
Remove vines and trees from range fences, and
Cleanup around buildings, grounds and along roadways.
Other approved activities that rangemasters volunteered for included floor scrubbing before Junior Rifle
on Fridays of January through March, setup/take down chairs for the hunter safety courses, volunteer to
work at the Night at the Races and Turkey Fair events, archery events, newsletter and website, flexible
work activities, contractor participation and other approved events.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our rangemaster safety/training courses on either
January 12 or February 16 at either the 9:00 am or 1:00 pm sessions where you can sign up
for an activity to improve YOUR club.

Pennsylvania’s 34th Annual Keystone State Games! submitted by Charlie Smith
The 37th annual Keystone State Games were held July 25-30th. “The Keystone State Games, modeled
after the Olympic Games, are PA’s largest annually held multi-sport competitions providing
Pennsylvania's amateur athletes an opportunity to
compete against athletes from throughout the
Commonwealth and beyond in a festival atmosphere
that promotes all of the positive aspects of amateur
sports.” http://premiersportingevents.com/Layouts/sga/ksg_home.htm
Shooting events have not been included at these games
since 2010. But, due to the last minute and generous
invitation of the Wilkes Barre Rifle and Pistol Club, in
Hunlock’s Creek, PA, the games did include shooting
competitions this year! Thanks to notice from a fellow
competitor, Vernon Ferguson found out about the
competition.
Vernon and Julie Latzgo took first and second
respectively in the Open division of Conventional
Pistol. http://premiersportingevents.com/pdfs/2018%20%20KSG%20SHOOTING%20RESULTS.pdf
Way to go, Vernon and Julie!
USA Archery Level 1 Instructors! submitted by Barry Trout
Congratulations to Barry Trout, George Pfeiffer, Karl Pfeiffer, and Steve
Smith on achieving their USA Archery Level 1 Instructor certification in
June!
“The Level 1 Archery Instructor Certification Course provides graduates the
necessary tools to maintain a high level of safety both on and off the archery
range and ensures that minimum standards for archery instruction are con-
sistently taught to provide for the safety and enjoyment of the participants,
instructors and spectators. Level 1 Instructors are well prepared to teach
beginner archery programs to people of all ages and abilities in a variety of both indoor and outdoor set-
tings in the disciplines of target, field or 3-D archery. The Level 1 Instructor will learn about range
safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs and lesson plans.”

A C C O L A D E S The 59th Annual Walter Wise Memorial Police Pistol Match
September 15-16, 2018 @ Harrisburg Hunters & Anglers submitted by Charlie Smith
Our intrepid competitors, Vernon Ferguson and Julie Latzgo,
along with Vernon’s grandson, Will Poole, competed at the annual
Walt Wise match in mid-September.
Julie Latzgo and her partner in the two-man teams, Brian Keyser,
brought home two 2nds, a 3rd, and a 5th place from the four two-
man competitions. On Sunday’s rimfire team competition, Julie
and Brian pulled a third place when our own Vernon Ferguson
and Will Poole bested Julie and Brian by a single point to take
2nd!
Will Poole also earned the "2018 Walt Wise Memorial Match High

shooting, Will!
