Hopefully everyone is staying busy shoveling, plowing, and playing in all this snow and avoiding the nasty

flu that is plaguing our county. I know our new office location has certainly given me lots of practice shoveling!

This month is our annual Share the Love Food Drive and I’ve been excited to see that there are already some boxes out there in the community to collect food and items to help our struggling community members. We are gearing up for Share the Love Food Drive again. For those who don’t know about it, this food drive is something of a tradition in Sublette County 4-H. Every year boxes are placed around Big Piney, Pinedale, and La Barge (Reminder for those who helped place boxes: We ask that you keep an eye on your box, and if it over flows to pick up the food and take it to the person/club heading up the food drive in your town by the designated date). At the end of the month all the donated food will be collected in Big Piney and Pinedale at the Extension Office to be weighed and then delivered to the Food Baskets.

Boulder Outcasts Club Report

The 4H Outcasts rocket club’s 1st meeting was on January 2, 2017. Four or five club members, two parents, and two club leaders were at the meeting. The meeting was about buying rockets and what we will do in the future. The meeting was held at the 4H Office out of town. The reason that we had the meeting was because we needed to get everyone together.

Character CountsTeaching Trustworthiness

Being trustworthy means:• Telling the truth

• Following the rules

• Not taking things that don’t belong to you

• Doing what you say you’ll do

When you think about teaching trustworthiness to others you must remember that is does not happen overnight. Instead it is something you should model for others everyday—you influence and are a role model for everyone you come in contact with.

Take time to discuss with others how trust is earned and why we consider others trustworthy. Provide specific examples and illustrations to express thoughts. For example: How do others earn your trust? How do you know when you can trust people? Which people do you feel are the most trustworthy?

Like this activity? Find more like it in the “Good Ideas Book” at your local Extension Office

Trustworthiness

“Watch your thoughts; they lead to attitudes.

Watch your attitudes; they lead to words.

Watch your words; they lead to actions.

Watch your actions; they lead to habits.

Watch your habits; they form your character.

Watch your character; it determines your

destiny.” —Unkown

Trustworthiness in 4-H4-H Club Activity • Six Feelings

Supplies: Seven large signs with one name on each of the Seven Dwarfs on each sign (Happy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy, Sleepy and Doc).

Post these signs on the wall.

Ask the participants to look at all the signs on the on the wall. Have club members and guests stand by the sign that best describes how they feel at that moment. Explain that is it ok to be honest about what and how they are feeling. Give each group about 10 minutes to create a 30 second commercial to show their emotion. Have each group act out their commercial.

Discussion Questions:

Do you think how you feel or act affects whether a person feels they

can trust you or not? Why or why not?

• Tell a time when you were honest and no one was watching

• Share an example of someone showing loyalty to a friend

• Name one person who you trust and tell why

High School Youth ForumThe Society for Range Management High School Youth Forum (HSYF) is an opportunity for high school students in Wyoming to improve their speaking skills, learn more about natural resources, and win a sponsored trip to the National Society for Range Management (SRM) Conference.

Many of you may have worked on public presentations for 4-H, school projects, or other venues. If you have an interest in rangelands, wildlife, hydrology, soil science, botany or similar topics, it’s not too early to start working on an HSYF presentation. In the fall of 2017, high school students from around Wyoming will gather in Green River at the state Society for Range Management meeting. Each will give a 6-8 minute presentation on a topic of their choice; it must be natural resource related. Local research project results or in-depth summaries of ecosystem function are common strategies. A panel of judges will evaluate each participant’s presentation.

The winner from the Wyoming state meeting will advance to compete at the National SRM Conference in Reno, Nevada in February 2018. All travel expenses for the winner will be paid by the Wyoming Section of SRM. If you’d like more information about the program call Glenn at the UW Extension office (367-4380) or Shari Meeks, the Southwest Area representative for Wyoming SRM (367-2257).

Sublette County has sharp students with great skills. We can generate some excellent presentations and represent our resources well!

Mark kroeger (right) was recently recognized as Sublette County 4-H’s Volunteer of the Year at the Cally’s Helping Hands Volunteer appreciation dinner. Mark has been an archery and shotgun volunteer in Sublette County 4-H for 15 years! He has been instrumental in growing the archery program in Sublette County to 70-100 youth county wide each year. He has also voluntarily partnered

4-H archery with BOCES youth classes to expose even more kids to archery. Mark also has taught archery in the 4-H afterschool program and at numerous 4-H camps. He spends at least 6-8 hours per week for upwards of 12 to 14 weeks to develop shooting skills in kids enrolled in 4-H archery and is always our lead coach at the Wyoming State 4-H shoot in Douglas. He volunteers upwards of 150 hours to the program each year.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support of our program!

Mckenna Carnahan (left) recently competed in the Western National Round Up where she took third place in fashion revue-constructed division! Great job McKenna Carnahan. We are proud of you.

Congratulations Mark and McKenna!
