ADMINISTRATORS’ MESSAGE
Mrs. LoPresti, Mr. MacDougall & Mr. Simpson
It is hard to believe that June has arrived already…again! While
the month of June brings with it the promise of sunny days, there
is still much learning to be done and many wonderful initiatives
planned for the days ahead.
The entire staff at Guardian Angels Catholic School would like
to express our sincere gratitude to the families of this wonderful
community. It has been our pleasure to work with the parents,
students and community of Guardian Angels.
As well, we want to thank Father Jim and the staff of St.
Benedict Parish for their guidance, support and involvement in
our school. The success of our students is enhanced through the
partnership created between home, school, and Church.
We wish all our families and staff a relaxing and safe summer
break. May God continue to bless all members of the Guardian
Angels Catholic School community with health and happiness!
Lord, bless Guardian Angels Catholic School community
As we come to the end of the school year,
we give you thanks
For all the good things you have done in us.
We thank you for all who have shared
in the work of our school this year.
We are grateful for all the blessings
That we have experienced as a school.
We thank you God for the time that we have spent together.
We ask for your continued care and guidance
Throughout the summer months.
Help us to enjoy our vacation and
Let it be a time of refreshment and joy.
May it bring us rest after our many months of work. Amen.

TRANSITION PLANNING
As the school year draws to a close, many of us look forward to
the transition from school year routines to summer routines and
activities. This is an exciting time for many, students and
teachers alike.
However, the process of transitioning and change can be a very
stressful and anxious time for children with special needs and
their families. Stressful transition periods include entry/exit
from school, changing grades, and changing schools whether in
a new neighbourhood or between elementary/ secondary/post-
secondary.
These challenges can be reduced by transition planning, an
integral part of special education services. Transition plans must
be developed for all students with an IEP and are incorporated
into the plan. Plans may also be developed for students without
an IEP who access special education services. In order to be
successful, planning should start well ahead of the anticipated
transition. Critical and required components to a transition plan
include:
specific transition goals
support needs
actions required to achieve the goals
roles and responsibilities and
timelines for the implementation and/or completion of
each of the identified actions
In addition to major life events, transition planning can also be
used to address transitions occurring throughout the day or other
short term periods (ie. between activities or classes). While
transition planning can address many different situations, it is
required in all cases (for students with an IEP) for transition to
postsecondary activities. Transition planning is also required for
day to day as well as long term transitions for all students with
autism spectrum disorders.
If you feel that your child has difficulty transitioning, whether in
day to day scenarios or between major events, speak to your
child’s teacher, SERT or Principal about incorporating transition
planning into their education plan.

BUILDING POSITIVE ASSETS
In the Halton Catholic District School Board, positive assets are:
• A way to collectively understand, promote, and
measure positive child and youth development;
• Created to clarify the positive relationships, youth
competencies, self-perceptions, and values needed for
children and youth to succeed;
• Grounded in research evidence - children with many
assets are more likely to develop positively and less
likely to participate in risk-taking behaviour.
For this reason, building positive assets in our students is
identified as an initiative that supports our collective work to
achieve the desired outcomes for many of our strategic priorities
(mental health, student retention, responding to/meeting the
needs of all learners, student and parent engagement, etc.)
In 2014, The Search Institute developed a framework called
Developmental Relationships® with a focus on a broader web of
5 critical relationships that children need to succeed – Express
Care, Challenge Growth, Provide Support, Share Power, and
Expand Possibilities. These relationships between a young
person and adult and/or between a young person and a peer can
powerfully and positively shape their identity for years to come.
Our focus during the month of June is the Expand Possibilities
dimension – expanding a student’s horizons and connecting
them to opportunities
• Exploring – exposing others to new ideas, experiences,
and places
• Connecting – introducing others to people who can help
them grow
• Navigating – helping others work through barriers that
could stop them from achieving their goals.

E.S.L. NEWS
It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over. It has
been another wonderful year of new and exciting learning for
our ELL students and teachers alike. The summer is an excellent
time and opportunity for reading, both in English and in your
first language. Your child can choose to read what is of interest
from a wide variety of texts such as fiction and factual. Poetry
offers wonderful opportunities for reading, writing, speaking,
and listening practice for ELL students. It gives them a chance
to expand vocabulary knowledge, play with language, and work
with different rhythms and rhyme patterns.
Your children will learn English much more effectively if they
continue to develop their first language at the same time. "In
early stages, reading in the first language can profoundly
accelerate the development of reading ability in the second
language." This is true because: reading skills transfer from
language one to language two, reading provides knowledge of
the world that makes second-language texts more
comprehensible, and the pleasure of the reading habit itself
transfers to the second language.” Krashen, S. (2004) The Power
of Reading: Insights from the Research. Heinemann.

attendance each day during the assessment, ready to participate
fully. In advance, we appreciate your efforts in scheduling
appointments around this block of time. The EQAO assessment
results help us to continue to improve upon the quality Catholic
education offered to your children.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Supervision of Students before School
Parents are reminded that supervision of students on the school
yard begins at 8:10 a.m. If you arrive at school with your
child/ren prior to 8:10 a.m., please remain with them until the
yard duty supervisor comes on the yard. Should you leave before
a supervisor is present and an accident/injury should occur, there
would be no one to assist your child/ren. This is a serious safety
concern. We want all of our students to be safe at all times. For
the safety of your child/ren, please ensure you respect the 8:10
a.m. timeline. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Side Doors/Late Slips
After the morning bell rings and all classes have entered the
building, students are to enter the school through the front doors
and are required to report to the main office to pick up a late slip.
Primary students will be escorted to class by a buddy.
Parents/caregivers of late students are asked to say goodbye at
the office as students receive their late slip and proceed directly
to class.
Entry and Dismissal Safety
It has come to our attention that a number of students are coming
late to school each morning and are being picked up late at the
end of the day. It is important that students arrive on time for
school each morning and are picked up by parents/guardians
promptly at the end of the day. Our school day begins at 8:30
a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. Please ensure that your child/ren
arrive at school in time enough to line up with their classmates at
8:30 a.m. Please call the school to report all student absences
and late arrivals before 8:30 a.m. If you are running late at 3:00
dismissal time, please make alternate arrangements. There is no
after-hours supervision in the main office. Thank you for your
ongoing cooperation and attention in this matter!
Early Departures & Lunch Hour Procedures
Students who are leaving school outside of normal dismissal
times need to be picked up at the main office. Please send a note
to the teacher stating the time your child is to meet you at the
office. Please be aware that no child will be allowed to leave the
school without a signed and dated note from their
parent/guardian. The office must also be aware if students are
to be picked up by anyone else other than their
parents/guardians.
In keeping with our Board policy, students may remain at school
for lunch at the Principal’s discretion, providing that lunchtime
rules are followed at all times. At the beginning of the school
year, you are asked to complete a form indicating student lunch
arrangements (i.e., whether a student remains at school for lunch
or goes home).
To change these arrangements, it is necessary to provide written
permission from a parent or guardian. These arrangements must
be made ahead of time and each time the lunch routine varies.
Please note that “standing notes” indicating that a student can
leave school anytime s/he chooses are NOT accepted. As a
school staff, it is important for us to know each time a student
leaves our care at noon hour, that permission has been given, and
that parents know the exact whereabouts of their child. We
appreciate your cooperation and support with this important
supervision and safety issue.
Allergies & Nutrition
Please remember that we are an ALLERGEN-REDUCED
environment. For the safety of all students, please refrain from
sending any pea/nut products with your child. For birthday
treats, please consider non-food items for student sharing, such
as pencils, stickers, erasers etc.
Physical Education Instruction
A reminder: students participating in our Physical Education
program require proper phys-ed attire (as outlined in our
physical education curricular guidelines). Individual classroom
teachers have reviewed these expectations with students.
Running shoes with non-marking soles are required in the gym;
outdoor shoes are not acceptable. We also require that students
have indoor shoes for use during the school day for their own
safety so that we can avoid mishaps from the mud, snow, dirt
and water tracked into the school.
Early Departures & End of Day Dismissal
One of our school goals is to preserve classroom instructional
time. To this end, we seek to minimize and/or eliminate
disruptions to instructional time in our classrooms. We would
ask that you ensure the following:
If you are changing your child/ren’s regular dismissal
routine, please be reminded – Our office is a very busy place
and we cannot guarantee that every message can be relayed to
students before the end of day. As we wish to limit these
situations, as well as limit disruptions to classes to deliver these
messages, we ask that you please make arrangements ahead
of time using the student agenda and notes to the school.
We thank parents for your support in ensuring that interruptions
to classroom instructional time are kept to a minimum!
After Hours Custodial Requests
Our afternoon/evening custodial staff are not available for
family requests to open portable doors or the main doors to the
school in order to retrieve their child/ren’s forgotten items. This
is a safety and security concern as the evening staff do not know
the students and their families like our regular daytime school
staff. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this
matter.
MEDICATION PICK UP
A reminder to all parents that student medication, which is kept
in the office health room, including puffers and Epi-pens, should
be picked up by a parent/guardian on the last day of school –
Thursday, June 30 by 12 noon. Appointments for medical
exchange of information for next year will be set up for the last
week of August with the Vice Principal.

SCHOOL BUS ORIENTATION DAY
School Bus Orientation Day is a safety program provided by
Halton Student Transportation Services and local bus operators
to assist parents and first time riders in understanding the
importance of bus safety. It helps students and parents feel more
comfortable riding a school bus before the first day of school.
Parents of all first time riders are encouraged to bring their
children to the free sessions, which will feature a classroom
presentation on school bus safety, including a special video and
a demonstration on a school bus. School bus company safety
officers and bus drivers will talk to the children and their parents
about safely getting on and off of the bus, proper behaviour on a
school bus, crossing the street to get to a waiting bus and overall
school bus safety. In addition, a handout will be provided to all
young riders with tips on school bus safety.

IS YOUR FAMILY MOVING?
If your child/ren will not be returning to Guardian Angels
Catholic School in September 2016, please contact our
secretary Mrs. Boyle in writing or by calling the school at 905-
876-2386 as soon as possible. If you have already enrolled your
child/ren in the Grade 1 French Immersion or Grade 5 Extended
French programs at St. Benedict School, please let us know so
that we can transfer their student records accordingly. Please
note that this process does not include students presently in
Grade 8 going into High School. Even if you are just moving to
a new home that is still within our school boundary, we still need
you to contact us so that we can update your family’s contact
information. If you know of any families who need to register
their child/ren for the Fall especially Kindergarten placements,
please have them come in to register at our Main Office as soon
as possible. We appreciate your support in helping us plan
accordingly for the coming school year this Fall!
SCHOOL UNIFORM UPDATE
Thank you to all the students and parents for complying with the
school uniform policy. Please note that the school uniform
consists of pants, tunics, shirts, blouses, cardigans, and fleece
tops, for the cooler weather, embroidered with the school logo.
As in the past students are reminded to wear white or dark socks
(navy or black) as part of the uniform. Please remember that
students will need a pair of ‘indoor’ shoes to protect their feet
once outdoor shoes or boots are taken off - all indoor
shoes/running shoes should have non-marking soles. Also at this
time of year students and parents should be reminded that closed
toe shoes are advisable for safety reasons. Students should avoid
wearing “flip flops” and sandals as their toes will be exposed
and easily injured.
SCHOOL UNIFORM EXCHANGE
All students must be in full school uniform, all day every day,
from the first day of school, September 7, 2016. Shop online at
www.rjmccarthy.com, by phone 416-593-6900 or 1-800-668-
8261 or at the new Milton Pop-Up store on July 11-12. Our
Guardian Angels Catholic School Council will also once again
be offering a school uniform swap/exchange. Using a ticket
system, drop offs of gently used, clean school uniforms will be
accepted between 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 29 and
tickets will be granted. Pickups using your tickets will take place
on Wednesday, August 31 from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the gym.

8:30 Start of School Day

Senior Kindergarten
First Day – Thursday, September 8
The Halton Student Transportation Service (HSTS) Consortium,
our Board’s transportation provider and coordinator, has advised
us that due to improved efficiency in route planning they have
been able to arrange more practical arrival times to drop off bus
students before school in the morning. Specifically, they have
indicated that, in most situations, no bus will arrive at a school in
the morning earlier than 20 minutes before the start of the
instructional day. Teacher supervision will be provided for
students on the Kindergarten yard and on the schoolyard at 8:10
a.m. each day.
We ask that students come to school no earlier than 8:10 a.m. as
NO supervisor will be on duty outside. Please do NOT drop off
your child/ren and leave them in the yard unattended. At the end
of the school day, dismissal will begin at 3:00 p.m. and end 10
minutes later. Students are advised to go directly home and not
remain at the back of the school. Those students boarding buses
to go home are to report to the front of the school directly after
the dismissal bell. Working together we can provide the safest
possible environment for all students here at Guardian Angels
Catholic School.
Parents can access their child’s transportation information
through the Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS)
website at www.haltonbus.ca or by calling 1-888-803-8660. For
security purposes, you will be asked to input your child’s
Ontario Education Number (OEN), which can be found on the
front of your child’s report card. Should you have any
questions, please feel free to call the school office.
ELEMENTARY STUDENT CLASS PLACEMENT
for 2016-2017
The planning process to organize for the 2016-2017 school year
is beginning. We share this information concerning school
organization to develop an understanding of the care and thought
required to develop a plan. The task is complex, time consuming
and is often the subject of many revisions. The process begins
now and continues right up to the final publication of class lists
in September then reviewed in September if changes occur.
Our primary goal at Guardian Angels Catholic School is to
develop balanced classes. A balanced class reflects the diversity
of our community and allows the variety of interests and talents
of our learners to emerge and be appreciated. It is our hope that
each year brings opportunities for students to meet new friends
and expand their circle of acquaintances. Ultimately, we try to
place the children where they will be able to work best and
achieve the most success.
In building classes we use the following criteria:
A balance according to gender (where possible).
Best matching the students’ learning style with the
teachers’ teaching style.
Heterogeneous groupings – a balance of abilities in each
class.
If a child was in a combined class this year, we will try to
place them in a straight grade class. However, this is not
always possible.
Social blending – we will attempt to place students in
groupings where they will effectively learn. This should
not be viewed as a grouping of friends. At particular
stages, some close friends learn best in separate classes.
The staff of Guardian Angels School is a group of dedicated
professionals. Years of meeting the learning needs of children
give them the unique qualifications to make these decisions. It
takes many hours of discussion, reflection, revision and
consideration of alternatives to arrive at the best organization for
our school. Class organization remains tentative and cannot be
finalized until October 2016 due to staff and student movement.
Our Board has moved to an electronic format of informing
parents of their child/ren’s placement/s for the upcoming school
year. Through the Board website www.hcdsb.org, parents can
access their child’s class placement by clicking on the Schools
tab- School Listing - Choosing School- Clicking on Elementary
Student Placement. Entering the OEN number and clicking
Search. All elementary student class placements will become
live on the afternoon of Friday, September 2, 2016.

A Prayer for My Dad
Dear God, I gratefully thank you
for giving me my Dad.
You must really love me,
‘cause You gave me the best You had.
Dads spend time with their family
And show them how much they care.
They read their children stories
Of worlds beyond compare
Watch over Dad and bless him Lord
and keep him in Your care
And may he feel my love for him
Is my humble, heartfelt prayer.
And to all the Dads, Uncles, Mentors, Grandfathers, Stepfathers,
Godfathers and Fathers-to-be, all who have taken on the role of
Father…have a very Happy Father’s Day! Blessings to you all!
Show them how much you care on Sunday, June 19!
