He particularly loves still life and working on figurative motives, simplifying them to the point of abstraction. He also enjoys composite pieces, mixing up still life and figurative and abstraction. His wife Caren is his muse and model. Much of his work involves figures on the beach or shoreline landscapes. Until recently he would do his own work in his studio then go into the water and surf – every day. Adrian was born in Queenstown, Tasmania in 1947, the son of a teacher. His first passion to make marks was when he was very young in kindergarten. I remember walking home with my mum and my painting and I felt so real and proud – the same feeling I get after a day in the studio when all goes well. All mums notepads were scribbled on, so mum gave me my own pads. It was the start of a love affair with sketchbooks – He has completed 243 sketchbooks so far (all numbered), some of which he brought along for us to peruse. They were simply beautiful. When he was 5 the family moved to Launceston and he became a regular visitor to the Queen Victoria gallery and museum. He remembers that during a travelling exhibition of works by Rodin, a piece of sculpture went missing making national news! It was found in a local park and restored to the art gallery. At the gallery I saw Boyd, Olsen, Dickenson and Tucker – modern paintings made an impression on me.John Olsen won a prize at that time at the gallery for Journey through a you-beaut country”. At the age of 15 Adrian managed to secure a job as an artist with the local newspaper. He found the pressure of deadlines and workload enormous. His mentor at work told him to Just do ita long time before Nike urged the same thing. This colleague also urged him to open his mind – and I have tried to keep it open ever since”. Lockhart moved to Sydney in the early 70s. After a full day in the office I had renewed energy to do my own thing at home. I was quite energized, which resulted in my being able to have work in art galleries at that time.Robin Gibson saw his work in a framers and asked him to exhibit in his gallery, which he did. Lockhart learned from masters he admired, such as Chardin, David Hockney, Morandi, At one stage he thought he should stop looking at other artists of reputation and even stop going to exhibitions in order to find his own voice, but he found that you cannot develop in a vacuum. In the 1990s the exhibition of his work expanded to the US, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra and the New England and Maitland regional art galleries. Photos of major exhibitions included a series of surfboards which he had painted, and the Shorelines and Bookmarks exhibitions in Maitland featured his recent figurative and abstracted work, together with his artists books. He particularly loves creating books, either through printmaking (etching and woodcuts) or by drawing over the pages of second hand books, allowing the original typesetting to show through. He believes that his love of all things to do with print and books is a consequence of his newspaper background. Adrians advice to himself (and us) is – open the mind. Just do it. And always be an explorer. Now approaching 70, he continues to take his own advice.
