By far the majority of her inspiration comes from her own backyard which is in rural Sydney overlooking the Hawkesbury River. It is full of her favourite subjects trees, rocks and birdsthe more the better she says! Occasionally she works in oils, but mostly Melissa paints in Acrylics, working on several paintings at a time. Sometimes she does a few black and white miniatures just to stop and cleanse her brain from her big colourful works. Melissa then gave us a demonstration of how she brings her vibrant creations to life. Starting with her palette, which has a warm and cool of each colour, red, blue and yellow, and one complimentary colour, either purple, green or orange. Tonight she chose purple. She never uses black but creates her own dark by mixing all darkest colours on her palette together. Her works are slowly built up using many layers of paint, starting with a wash of transparent red. She loves starting paintings because she doesnt have to be precious, she just splashes paint around and has fun. Next she uses the darkest tone and blocks in areas then adds some warm tones and sprays the whole work with water and lets the paint mix itself, creating happy accidents with the drips adding vertical elements. When this is dry she paints the negative spaces around the trees with a large rubber wedge, softening the chunky bits of paint with a brush. Then she blocked in the trees and foliage with a brush. Melissa uses square brushes in various sizes to get the pixilated effect, which is the signature style of her work. Then, its back to the wedge for the large rock area. There was still many more layers to go, but we could now see the landscape emerging from the plethora of stunning colours. Melissa concluded by encouraging all who want to be a Public artist to have an Internet presence. Using Social Media such as Facebook and Instagram for promotion can help and also having a website is very important these days. Guest Art ist

N o v e m b e r Marijke Greenway

Oils/Mixed Media

Marijke is an artist with three nationalities

that have made up her life experiences -

born in Holland, then emigrating with her

parents to South Africa and eventually

choosing to live in Australia with her

husband and three children during l988.

Her early studies took place in South

Africa, but it was in Australia with its very

active art world that she became most

prolific in her output and variety of

subject matter. She is equally at home

with oils, watercolours and acrylics.

Acknowledged as a popular watercolour

and mixed media teacher, she has

tutored regular classes for 12 years.

She has accumulated an impressive list

of awards and commendations and has

widely exhibited in group and solo

shows. During 2006 she exhibited

internationally with a solo exhibition on

the Greek island of Leros. She has been

published with major contributions to art

magazines and is a member of several

art societies, including the Royal Art

Society and the Australian Society of

Marine Artists.

Marijke lives at Pearl Beach on the

Central Coast amidst stunning scenery

which is her main inspiration.

She feels that Plein air painting is what

she does best, ninety five percent of her

work is painted on site with her favourite

subject at present, being trees. She finds

immense satisfaction in capturing the

sense of " being there" - of distilling the

essence of nature and recording all the

permutations of colour seen and felt.

Oils

There was quite a lot of interest in our recent Ros Psakis Oils workshop. Ros took us through some of the basics in Oils painting, as well has her key elements to creating a successful painting – looking at lighting direction, colours, tones and drawing. After demos of each stage, each workshopper painted a charming picture of two girls playing by water. Some great results - thanks Ros!

Ros Psakis Workshop Report Saturday 12th September 2015

Self Portrait

The topic will be ‘Face to Face’ and the workshop will explore capturing character, personality and mood in a portrait. Bring a mirror to do a self portrait, or photos as reference material, and a wide assortment of mixed media: pencils, conte, charcoal, ink, and paint – see the materials list for details. We are lucky to have David as our tutor – He is an Australian painter and printmaker who was the winner of the Dobell Prize for Drawing in 1999. He has been selected as a Dobell Prize Finalist fifteen times, won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2002 and has been exhibited in the Archibald Prize eight times. Fairbairn teaches at the National Art School, Sydney. 11 booked so far, spaces available

David Fairbairn Workshop Saturday 17th October 2015

Caroline reported that sales of the book were going well with over 200 sold and $11,000 received, and the costs of production had been covered so it was no longer a liability for the Society.

Mixed Media - starting out or a new direction

If you would like to make a start in painting beyond the usual confines of just one medium, then this workshop will inspire and get you started. If you already paint in mixed media but feel there is something missing, or you’ve reached a dead end then this class is perfect. During the day there will be exercises and demonstrations combining acrylics, collage and various drawing materials. Controlling materials, liberating mark making, understanding colour, and working with some helpful compositional guidelines will be featured. http://judithwhite.net
