Message from Mrs Barr Dear Parents Since returning from the Christmas break there have been a number of issues over the school lunches. This has been a result of our regular chef leaving and temporary staff taking their place. There has also been a takeover in the company and Brookwoods is now Ch&Co. I have been assured, however, that the company have plans to review the whole service. Their intention is to refresh and relaunch after meeting with the children and introduce new food tasting initiatives. We shall watch this space over the next month. Well done to the lucky winners of the wine raffle over this week and our big prize draw winner Mrs Fields from the Robin Class. I hope that you will enjoy your well-stocked wine cellar and many tasting evenings to come. Bad luck Miss Ritchie, you will have to seek an alternative way to celebrate after your epic run in the London Marathon. NEWS FROM MUSIC DEPARTMENT Pentatonic scale

What is it? What is a scale even?

Let’s start with the latter. A scale, in music, is a set of notes ordered by pitch (how high or low they are). If you know anything about shapes you might be able to guess how many notes a pentatonic scale has. If you said five, then well done. Like a pentagon has fives sides, a pentatonic scale has five notes. Many songs are written around the pentatonic scale: Amazing Grace, Old Lang Syne, Old MacDonald had a farm, Rain rain go away. To name just a few..

NEWS FROM ART DEPARTMENT Year 5 had a wonderful workshop today where they learned to make their own felt from scratch. This involved constructing layers of merino fibre which were embellished with a William Morris style design. The fibre was turned into felt with the addition of water and friction. Pupils were delighted to see their panels shrink down during the process. The finished pieces will be placed together to create two banners for our school displays.

NEWS FROM COMPUTING DEPARTMENT On Tuesday the 5th of February pupils celebrated Internet safety day. The day started with an assembly attended by PC Alicia Smith, who was on hand to answer questions that the children had about internet safety. They spent time engaging in discussions and trying to understand what consent is in the digital world. This year’s Internet safety campaign encourages young people to explore how the internet works, who owns the information that is shared, and how they can actively take ownership of digital spaces.

NEWS FROM SPORTS DEPARTMENT Year 3 tag rugby vs Notting Hill Prep – 5th February

The year 3 boys travelled to Linford Christie to take on Notting Hill Prep in the ‘Lancaster Road Derby’. On a blustery and cold day, the boys played well in patches against strong opposition. The ‘A’ team struggled to find space in the Notting Hill Prep defence, Raif played nicely. The ‘B’ team played some encouraging tag rugby, Gabriel D excelling in attack and defence. The ‘C’ team played brilliantly in a game showing bags of enthusiasm from both teams, Izzy bagged a succession of tries, as well as some good tagging from Joachim, which resulted in a positive performance from the ‘C’ team. The ‘D’ team found things difficult in their first tag rugby fixture of the year, Freddy and Oscar shone in a battling performance.

‘A’ team player of the match – Raif

‘B’ team player of the match – Gabriel

‘C’ team player of the match – Izzy

‘D’ team players of the match – Freddy/Oscar incredibly proud of their efforts and team work. The team are now working on new tactics in morning training sessions, focussing on using the right hand side of the pitch on the far wing in order to attack the opposition on their weak side giving more opportunity to shoot for goal.

On pitch two the year 6 girls were also helped out by a selection of Year 5 girls for the afternoon. The team were a mixture of year 5 and 6 girls who worked well together as a collective despite the difference in year groups. The team were focussing on dribbling with the ball through spaces in order to gain ground before passing to avoid a tackle. With plenty of opportunities to shoot for goal the team managed to score a whopping 8 goals throughout the game! The team have been discussing the power needed when shooting from inside the D which proved effective by the final result. The player of the match on this pitch, chosen by NHP and very well deserved went to Farrah for her amazing contribution to the game.

Year 3 girls hockey match V NHP at Linford Christie Tuesday 5th February

On Tuesday 5th February the year 3 girls played their first hockey fixture of the season against Notting Hill Prep at Linford Christie. The girls were split into three teams and played on three separate pitches for three 10 minute thirds. The girls have been working on a variety of hockey passes within their sports lessons which they incorporated within their matches when getting the ball towards goal. All three teams were coached through the game and encouraged to think specifically of their position and the job of their position to ensure all areas of the pitch were covered by Chepstow players. Despite the cold all girls finished their games with plenty of smiles and high fives and a merit each for all of their effort and hard work.

Year 5 rugby vs Notting Hill Prep – 31st January

The year 5 boys travelled in high spirits to Linford Christie to take on Notting Hill Prep in the ‘Lancaster Road Derby’ in two rugby fixtures. The ‘A’ team played some excellent stuff in a tight encounter, Henry took his great form in his recent fixtures into this game, a shone with consistently good tackling. Oliver tackled well and made some surging runs and the pace duo of Tommy and Alexandre ran NHP ragged at times. However NHP came out 35-30 point winners with a last ditch try. The ‘B’ team played in an enthralling game, Sachin playing his best rugby of the year and Jaspar dominating in attack. Four year 4 children (Sofian, Charlie, Konstantin and Michael C) played brilliantly. The ‘B’ team came out with a battling 40-40 draw.

LITTLE CHEPSTOW NEWSKung Hei Fat Choi from Little Chepstow Nursery.

This week has been all about Chinese New Year. We welcomed two parents who kindly told us all about this celebration and we now know that it is the Year of the Pig as well as the fact that red is a lucky colour.

We made a yummy stir fry, tasted dumplings and special puddings and even ate with chopsticks.

The Dormice also made lovely elephant hand prints and the Field Mice have been doing some rather tricky puzzles. Another full and busy week.

RECEPTION NEWS This week the children have been writing a set of instructions for salt dough fossils. Why not have a go at making them at home.

In maths the children learnt how to share an even amount of treats equally. Sharing’s caring!

What a fun packed Friday we had in reception. Our dinosaur day was a huge success. So much effort went into such fantastic costumes. The children really enjoyed their dinosaur workshop and the costumes added to the drama..

YEAR 1 NEWS Year 1 are continuing to rehearse their production. We are now introducing dance routines and actions which the children are thoroughly enjoying creating! They have also been creating traditional Chinese props for the performance in their art lessons such as fans and lanterns- which have been beautifully decorated. In Maths we are exploring multiplication through repeated addition. We have explored via animal legs as a form of grouping! The children found it very entertaining to imagine 4 groups of 2 ostrich legs! We have had some entertaining pictures as a result. We have been researching non-fiction in Literacy in relation to our Goldilocks unit. The children chose a bear to explore using ipads, fact files and books and created some impressive presentations involving location, size, diet, appearance. We loved to see many children include extra facts to entertain their readers.

YEAR 2 NEWS The Woodpecker class blew us all away this week with their brilliant assembly all about idioms! The way they used costumes and props to explain each idiom carefully was amazing. We always thought that pulling your weight was a strange expression but now it makes so much sense! This week we had so much fun learning all about Chinese New Year. To mark the occasion, we made our own Chinese paper dragons. In literacy, we wrote our letters of complaint to Hogwarts and we’re pretty certain our letters of acceptance will arrive any day now. Finally, we have been learning all about leaflets and the persuasive language they use. We’re looking forward to the Kingfisher class assembly next week too

YEAR 4 NEWS This week in Year 4 we have been busy thinking about vocabulary to describe the old man character in the Tin Forest. Ms Morris and Miss Willway were blown away by the ideas from the children. Some replaced ‘old man’ with ‘gentleman in the evening of his life’ whilst others discussed his solitary lifestyle and visionary ideas.

In geography we learned that fossil fuels are contributing to greenhouse gases and looked at alternative renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro. Whilst in history we discussed the structure of Roman society from slaves to the emperor.

YEAR 5 NEWS It’s been busy, as always, but Tuesday was particularly jam-packed. We started the day off by celebrating Chinese New Year and creating our own Chinese dragons, which was problem solving in itself! In between our core lessons we had the chance to discuss what Safer Internet Day means and why it’s an important event in the school calendar. After creating posters on how to be safe online, we posted a photo on the school’s social media sites to see the power of social media. Jaeden is the year 5 Digital Leader so took part in the Safer Internet Day assembly and conversed with PC Smith, who visited us to talk about the importance of staying safe online. On top of all this, both classes took part in an art workshop – please read the Art Department news to find out more.

We’ve become word aware geniuses in English this week. Once we had split into groups, we analysed extracts from a Michael Morpurgo book. First, we concentrated on the language the author uses, defining words such as hunched and perplexed. We noted down personification, similes and metaphors used, and highlighted areas we thought could be improved. After each group had presented their findings, we discussed what order we thought the extracts came in and what we thought might happen after extract three.

On Wednesday, Miss Prentice visited us to tell us about her trip to Alaska, to consolidate our learning from our Geography lessons. Miss Prentice visited Canada for a year before heading back to university in New Zealand. She told us about the migration of caribou, what the main differences between summer and winter are, and the various animals that she met along the way. Did you know that in the summer it’s still light at 1am? Miss Prentice was saying she would come out of the cinema at midnight, and put her sunglasses back on because it was still so bright! We even saw a photo of Miss Prentice white water rafting! Thank you for sharing your Alaskan experiences with us.

YEAR 6 NEWS We have been writing up our accounts of what schools would be like in 100 years in diary form. From Ava travelling to school on her hoverboard to school, to Mikhaeel’s playing football in his school’s futuristic stadium-sized football pitch, there were some wonderful and creative ideas. Teddy, Josh and Alexander participated in the second round of the Primary Maths Challenge so well done to them for their determination! In the rest of maths we have been looking at Pi to measure the circumference, diameter and radius of circles. We had a memorable afternoon in RE learning about the significance of the Last Supper as depicted by different artists. We then created our own interpretations, considering the symbolism of certain colours, who is included and who is sat where.

YEAR 7 NEWS Our week started with a busy Monday where we joined Year 6 for maths. We were investigating circles and their properties, looking at the relationship between the circumference and Pi, as well as learning how to use our scientific calculators efficiently. We then went down to Little Chepstow where we joined in with their weekend talk and read with them. We are hoping to start reading to Nursery on a regular basis again. In English this week we have started a new project where we are developing our research skills to find out about the impact key historical figures have had on the modern world. We have chosen between Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill or Abraham Lincoln. Also this week we have begun to plan our trip to Paris and have been looking into the rides we might be going on in Disney Land, wonder who will be braver, the teachers or Year 7!
