From the Principal - Fiona Kelly

As this is the first newsletter for the term I feel the need to say Welcome back to term 3,I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. It does however feel like we have been back for alot longer than two weeks!

You may have noticed a big flurry of activity followed by a visit from a film crew yesterday. This was the ABC. On tonights episode of 7.30 WA there is a report about schooling inWestern Australia and we were asked by the media unit of the Department if we would allowsome filming here at our school. This of course was a great publicity opportunity for ourschool, except for the fact that the front of the school is a building site and the lawns at theback had turned to mush from over use!

In a bit of a panic I phoned a friend who just happens to be co-director ofGREENACRES TURF FARM. As you can see Peter saved the day and had his contractorshere within hours of my call providing us with new lawn at an amazingly generous matesrate. It was also Greenacres that provided the lovely lawn up the back of the school that thekids all love.

An interesting twist to the media report is the fact that the Independent Public School

initiative is being discussed. Unfortunately in the recent round of offers North FremantlePrimary school was not successful. Although disappointed that we missed out (48 of 141schools were selected) I have had some initial feedback that we were very competitive andshould definitely apply again next round. I will receive more details at a feedback meetingnext week and work with our school council to prepare for next time.

    Now for a few reminders:

BURSWOOD CONCERT: Its this Monday night. Please purchase a long sleeved blackbird shirt for the performance. Students need to be at Burswood by 6:30pm. All details arein the information note sent home by Mrs Branch.

WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTO:We are having a whole school photo taken next Tuesdaymorning. This photo will feature in the cookbook the P&C is publishing later this term.

Could all students please wear school uniform any one of our range will do!

ACTIVITY CHARGE: This charge covers all excursions and incursions for the semester. This includes swimming later in the year. In a couple of weeks time we are having anexternal financial audit. It would be fantastic if we could have all outstanding monies paid assoon as possible. Thanks for your support.

FUN RUN: Come and cheer on the kids its this Wednesday morning at 9am.

PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE : The story on page 3 of today's West Australian is a timelyreminder as to why we need to keep the Junior primary area gate shut. Please ask yourchildren not to climb the gate.

exploring apps that will support their learning, we took the iPads on a walk around school using the camera app.

    Room 3- Bev Lane

This week the children in room 3 have been making wanted posters aboutthemselves. They had to write descriptions of themselves includingmeasuring their height and writing their full names, address and phone numbers. Then they had to think of a crime to commit!Jordeys crime was being to be too cute. Parents should have received newspelling folders by now and home readers if requested. Please come and see meor send a note if its all too confusing.

Drama - Jill RickersRm 3have script called Priscilla and are learning about scenes. So far wehave some fierce dragons.Rm 4are learning about middle eastern culture as we act out an Aladdin andmagic carpet theme.Rm 5have been working on their persuasive speech by auctioning off theirpartner.

Room 5- Monica Parkes/Leanne VinciWe have had a great start to Term 3 and are looking forward to a busy term. InLiteracy we have began our new novels for 4 Roles of the Reader and arepreparing to write a report on the Olympic Games. This semester in Science, we will be focusing on Chemical Sciences. We havebeen discussing the properties of the states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) and

the movement of the particles within each state. Today in collaborative groupsthe students designed a science investigation to discover if the states of mattercan be changed. Stay tuned for the results of our investigations!Silent card shuffle has been the collaborative strategy we have used whenreviewing and learning our new maths topics. Not speaking is the hardest partof this strategy. Using a KWL has helped us review the terminology we knowand want to know.

Art - Margie Campbell NAIDOC WEEKThe last week of term allowed the students of NFPS to work again with AboriginalChoreographer Simon Stewart. He worked with each class every day discussing dancemoves, explaining the origins of the moves and some history of the people and places thatthese dances originated from. Once again the children were captivated by his stories anddancing. It was wonderful to watch the children perform at our special NAIDOC weekassembly. Following the assembly the students mixed across the age groups and participated

in a rotation of activities ranging from clay work and boomerang painting to sport. It was reallylovely to see the older students embrace their responsibilities, and caring for the youngerstudents assisting and directing them with the tasks given. The focus was on the recognitionof the symbols used in traditional and contemporary Indigenous painting and for students tomake their own stories using these icons. Thank you to Nicole for making the Pre-Primaryheadbands, Simon and Sarah and the other parents who came along to the classes andprovided support.

    Workingcooperativelywith SilentCard Shuffle

Skeletal 2D shapes a productfrom our Silent Card Shuffle.

ArtWell having finished second term on an Arts high, we have followedup with some Aboriginal artwork. Looking at how differentIndigenous artists use colour and blocks of colour in their stories

which depict icons to tell stories. The stories and colours chosen bythe students were very impressive.

    Term 3 clay work

Clay is now our focus for term three and all classes have started. Our focus is on useable art pieces, so potterythat students will be able to take home and use at home everyday. We will be completing the entire process ofmaking, drying, firing, glazing and re-firing. This process will take some time, which is a lesson in patience asstudents who wish to take their soft clay bowl home on the same day are realising. It will be a wonderfulexperience for the students to learn how the whole process of pottery is created from the initial creation of apiece of work to the finished glazed product.
