WELCOME TO 2011 NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

A very warm welcome to the London School of Samba 2011 Notting Hill CarnivalWeekend!

As those of you who have been before will know, Notting Hill Carnival gives us anopportunity to bring together all the parts of our school and showcase our skills, talent and love of Brazilian music, dance and carnival arts to the public at Europe'sbiggest street party. This year we will transport you and our audience from thestreets of Notting Hill to the mystical lands of Arabia with our colourful costumes, our beautiful float, and our magical samba enredo telling the story of Ze Malandro &the 40 thieves.

This is my third carnival and as with every year, I am amazed by the amount of hardwork and time that everyone puts in, from the first Carnival committee meeting onthe 12th of January all the way to the activities on carnival weekend. To put a showlike this on the road is truly an amazing achievement, and this year we had to facethe additional challenges around budget cuts, lack of manpower and theuncertainties in the wider arts sector in the UK. I would therefore like to thankeveryone who has been involved with this year's carnival preparations.

Making our weekend that more special are our friends who join us from our sisterschools across Europe to share the experience with us! This year we welcome fellowsambistas from Finland, Sweden, France and Spain as well as other parts of the UK.

All that remains is for me to wish you all the best of fun and enjoyment for theweekend ahead!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Parking in the streets near the barracãoStreet parking is available after 13.30 on Saturday 27 August and in residents parkingareas on Sunday 28 August and Monday 29 August. According to the Royal Borough ofKensington & Chelsea website:

Do parking restrictions apply on bank and public holidays? Yes, restrictions do apply. Controlled zone entry signs show that the hours ofrestriction are 8.30am to 6.30pm or 10pm Monday to Friday and 8.30 am to 1.30pmor 6.30pm on Saturday. These restrictions still apply on bank and public holidayswith the exception of residents’ parking and pay-and-display bays. These areavailable to all without charge. <www.rbkc.gov.uk/environmentandtransport/parking/parkingtickets/parkingrestrictions.aspx>

However, if you have to travel by car you would be advised not to try parking to closeto the barracão. Most parking spaces go early, and later on when you try to leave thearea, the roads can be very congested – especially in evening after Carnival onMonday. If possible, try parking 10 or 15 mins walk away from the barracão, south-west (in the area of Holland Park Avenue) or north-west (in the area of North PoleRoad & St. Quentin Avenue).

2011 Carnival T-shirts

We would like to thank Cubana Bar & Restaurant in Waterloo for our 2011 Carnival T-shirts. These will be available for all participants and stewards free charge and willbe distributed at the barracão for all participants when they register on the door onarrival for the first time. For stewards, this will be distributed by Carole Hayward onMonday morning. We will also have a number of t-shirts to give away on the paradewhich will take place just before the judging area.

Cubana is opposite WAC and is London’s freshest, juiciest bar-restaurant with freshtropical cocktails, reasonably priced home-made food prepared with free-rangeingredients and late night live Latin music! See <www.cubana.co.uk>

Pictures and videos of 2011 CarnivalThe LSS will put up pictures of the carnival weekend on its website as soon as possibleafterwards. If you take any pictures or videos on your camera then select the bestafterwards and send a CD to Hanne Cole at the LSS office.

Getting to the barracãoTube travel to the Notting Hill areaTransport connections are better than in previous years. Transport for London (TfL)have a special page on their website with loads of useful information about the tube, trains and buses in the carnival area, including a map you can download. You can seethat page here: <http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gettingaround/Nottinghillcarnival/>

Oyster card usersOne thing can make travel to carnival expensive: the use of what TfL call “auto-complete” at ticket barriers. This is the practice of leaving the ticket gates open whenconfronted with large crowds. You find that although you touched in at the start of yourjounrey, you will not be allowed to touch out at the end. On their carnival page, TfLstate that this may happen again this year “due to high passenger numbers atstations”. Furthermore TfL state:– If you can't touch in or out, any maximum fare incurred will be refunded

automatically to your card when you next use it on the Tube (within seven daysfrom the end of the Carnival)

However, if you are not going to use the tube after carnival, or if you are a visitor fromoverseas, then you are advised to purchase a daily paper travelcard for each day ofcarnival.

APPENDIX: ABOUT THE LONDON SCHOOL OF SAMBA

“To entertain, educate and to introduce to the public the music, dance and other activities of the Brazilian carnival"

1984 constitution

Formed in 1984, the London School of Samba was the first samba school in the UK. It was created froma nucleus of 12 drummers - many of whom were already regarded then as some of the leading Latinmusicians in London: João Bosco de Oliveira, Alan Hayman, Pato & Carlos Fuentes, German Santana,Dave Pattman, Dawson Miller, Liliana Chachian, Dave Bitelli, Hilton Leite, Gerry Hunt and Neville Murray.

Our colours of green & white were chosen by João Bosco de Oliveira in honourof G.R.E.S. Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, who became theMadrinha of the LSS in 1984. The first theme of the LSS in the Notting HillCarnival was also in tribute to them: Homage to Mocidade. In 1989, Mocidadeperformed with the LSS at the 3rd European Encontro on the Southbank. In2009, they made another visit to take part in the 25th anniversary of the LSS.We are proud to have Mocidade as Madrinha to our school.

By August 1984, when the LSS first appeared at the Notting Hill Carnival, the LSS were the largestsamba school outside Brazil. Within five years some 700 people had joined the school. The LSS has beenin top ten of the parading bands at the Notting Hill Carnival since 1999. The LSS were the winners ofCarnival in 1986, and came 2nd in 2001 and 3rd in 1990. In 2004, the LSS won the Float category andwere the winners of the Samba Category in 2006 and 2009. 2011 is our 27th parade in the Notting HillCarnival.

The LSS is the Madrinha (“Godmother”) of Samba in the UK. In its first 10 years, the school wasinstrumental in helping spread samba across England, Scotland & Wales. At least 30 samba groups havebeen formed in the UK by current or former LSS members. Furthermore, some 50 groups totallingaround 1000 performers from across the UK and the rest of Europe have participated in the parades inthe Notting Hill Carnival in the last 25 years. The LSS is also Madrinha of Bloco do Baliza in Madrid,Spain.

There were many famous performers associated with the early LSS. These included the world famousLatin percussionists Robin Jones, Roberto Pla and Nana Vasconcelos, who was the Honourary Presidentof the LSS (1984–1989). Mike Lindup (Level 42) and Neil Barnes (Leftfield) were also early members. The famous Brazilian singer Emilhna Borba (1923–2005) was the Madrinha of the LSS in 1988. SteveCapaldi (1944–2005) the drummer and co-founder of Traffic was a also big supporter of the school andplayed with the LSS on several occasions.

The LSS did its first performance at Covent Garden Piazza on 1st April 1984 and was soon doing a largenumber of gigs across the UK. Within five years, the LSS had become the first samba group to performat WOMAD and had performed in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham andmany other UK cities. The LSS attended the 1st European Samba Encontro in Uppsala, Sweden in 1986,and 2nd in Turku, Finland in 1987, and played at the first UK samba encontro in Lincoln in 1990.

The International Samba Festival in Coburg, Germany is another event where the school has won topprizes: in 2004 and 2008, our dancers won the Rainha da Coburg competition. 2011 marked the 11th

appearance at this festival.

The LSS has been the UK’s leading teacher of samba in the UK since 1984. Through our open-accessdrum and dance workshops we have introduced samba directly to around 31,000 people. This includes21,000 through weekly classes in London and another 10,000 additional children and adults in primaryschools, secondary schools, colleges and universities. Regular workshops are held all year round at theWaterloo Action Centre in London. Altogether, the school has had around 2000 members and performedover 1000 gigs across the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe. In 2005, the LSS became the first sambaschool to perform in north Africa when it played in Algeria. In 2011, it became the first samba schoolto perform in China when it played for the Chinese New year in Hong Kong.

The LSS has also worked extensively in support of charities in the UK and Brazil - notably through theAnglo-Brazilian Society and Task Brazil. The LSS also supported the Associação Beneficiente SãoMartinho street children charity in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro between 1994 & 2001.

APPENDIX: HOW SAMBA IS JUDGED IN CARNIVAL

WHAT IS JUDGED

The LSS is judged in at least three categories:

1. Adult Main Band2. Samba Category3. Float Category

Notting Hill Carnival is a competition, not just a party. All LSS participants MUSTadhere to the requirements of the judging criteria for samba schools when we gopast the judges. The category “harmonia” counts for 30 points out of 100. Toachieve these points we need to be parading IN LINE, AT AN EVEN PACE, and theremust be NO GAPS opening up between these lines or between alas. In the“evolução” category, which counts for a further 10 points out of 100 we will bemarked on HOW MUCH WE LOOK LIKE WE ARE ENJOYING IT and this includessmiling and EVERYONE SINGING THE SONG.

Will all participants also please note that our funders the Arts Council of England(ACE) have informed us that they will be carrying out an “Artistic assessment” of theLSS on this parade. We assume that this will happen in the judging area.

The judging area is also where the media and freelance photographers gather. Butparticipants must also remember that this is the judging point – and the focus ofevery member should be working as a team in every ala to put on the best displayfor the judges. Please do not stop to have your photograph taken with members ofthe public here.
