He always completes his homework, listens carefully to the teacher, and is a great friend. Well done Teariki. Student of the Week 19th Feb - 26th Feb Dear Parents and Caregivers, Room 2 had a wonderful four days in Wellington, although the weather could have been a little kinder. The camp provided the opportunity for the children to learn more about World War One as well as the chance to make a movie and be introduced to 2D animation. Some of my highlights were travelling around Zealandia seeing lots of beautiful wildlife as well as getting behind the scenes of ‘Thunderbirds are Go,’ which was an exhibit at Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop. I wish to thank Mrs Dalmer, Mrs Williams, Mrs Holliday and Mr Bush for generously giving up their time to join us at camp and of course Mrs Pugh, who should feel very proud of her class who were such wonderful ambassadors of Waiau School. I would like to welcome Carmody and Zayden Owen-Cooper who are attending Waiau School for the next couple of weeks as they spend time staying with their Grandparents. All the very best for the week and I look forward to seeing many of you at our annual Trail Ride this weekend. Yours sincerely, Peter Kay. Beth Harris Is a great year 2 learner. Waiau School’s Values: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

A few photos from Wellington Camp. Thanks to Peter Bush for the photos.

Trail Ride Trail Ride Entries:Saturday = 369Sunday = 322

Two days to go and lots of people are very busy, setting up courses, cleaning woolsheds, organising the catering.

If you get the chance and you aren’t involved at the course do come and watch for a while, it is fantastic to see the amazing organisation of so many Waiau members and the excitement of all those motorbike riders having a great time.Saturday: Hillview and Winford Hills.Sunday: Whalesback Station and Mt Terako. The roads to the venues are well marked.

Reminders:

Parents please:All the adults are busy doing their jobs, you are responsible for your children and children under your care while they are at the trailride. Great care needs to be taken in and around the car park and woolshed areas in particular. The riders are not expecting little children to suddenly appear as they zoom past.

Please bring plenty of drink and nibbles for your children as they get extremely hungry.

Sunday - Barbecue - 4.30pm - 6.30pm - Mt Terako Woolshed: All are welcome to come and celebrate the hard work everyone has done for our Trailride weekend. Don’t bring anything, it is a shared tea - using up the left over food. (Follow the road signs)

A special thank you goes out to the landowners who have so generously opened up their properties for our School fundraiser.  Saturday’s ride sees us at the properties of Hamish and Sue McFarlane and the Galletly Family, on Sunday we are at the properties of Hugh and Jane Northcote and Sue and Pete Turnbull and Jess and Douglas Turnbull.  Please respect their properties and remember to take any rubbish away with you. You should all have your forms by now listing your jobs, if you have any questions please contact the co-ordinator for your job.

Pool ClosedThe swimming pool has closed for the season. We had to close it early due to a faulty pump. If you have purchased a key for the season you will need to return it to either the school or Brenda’s on Lyndon. We would appreciate all the keys returned by March 30th.

Thanks so much to Pools in Schoolz and Sports Tasman. The temporary pool has been well received by all! Also thank you to Jenny and Jess our pool caretakers, you have done an amazing job this season.

Seminar for Parents Understanding ‘WHY CHILDREN BULLY’ Bullying is a universal problem. It exists in every country, in every school, irrespective of size or social economic status. It seems to be more prevalent today, no thanks to computers and mobile phones. It can begin on Day-1 of the school year. Your child/teen could be very happy at school this week, with a secure group of friends. However, on Monday, everything can change as this ‘best friends’ group has now become her ‘worst enemy.’ How did this happen? Why did this happen? If it is baffling for the child, it is even more baffling for parents. Boy-world is considerably simpler than girl-bullying, and has a complexity of its own. There are boys who are reluctant to attend school each day as a result of being constantly teased by peers. Why are boys underperforming at school? Might this have something to do with bullying? Boy’s bully for different reasons than girls, and there are similarities. Why a particular boy bullies another can be different to why another boy bullies the same individual. There are a range of motives. Hence the complexity. Boy-bullying is essentially teasing. This seminar will assist parents to understand WHY CHILDREN / TEENS BULLY. It will provide parents with the bigger picture behind this social problem, and with this knowledge, assist parents to engage in the necessary background conversations with their sons and daughters that will assist in minimizing this growing problem. It is easy to take a denial-approach to this problem and lay blame at the feet of teachers, or parents, or the mass media, or dismiss it as ‘boys will be boys.’ We don’t seem to have a cliché-equivalent for girls (!) yet girl-bullying can be more horrendous than what happens in boy-world. The School Staff will be spending a day with the Presenter (below) to learn how to address this universal problem in an educational manner. Policies are insufficient to curtail this growing issue. The school’s response needs to be educational. For parents to play their part in reducing the effects of bullying on children that are not their own, we need to have the same understanding of this social issue that the teachers will be gaining from our staff day. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DATE: - Tuesday 13 March TIMES: 7.00 pm Cost: - NZ $ 10.00 pp VENUE: Amuri Area School - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Speaker: Robert Pereira from Australia, is an educational consultant in this area of school bullying.
