No. 87 Spring 2019 www.swanland.info always up to date 1 From the Chairman of the Village Association We do hope that our regularly updated website is keeping you in touch with all the issues that are having an impact on Swanland at the moment. It is difficult to reach all our members via email as we do not have addresses for the majority of residents in the SVA. It is also important for us to have a consensus of opinion on urgent matters when the need arises. To this end, please may I ask all our members who are online, to consider passing on their email addresses to our Membership Secretary, Louse Macfarlane, who will, of course, answer any concerns re data protection. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The new SVA noticeboard, courtesy of Duchy Homes, hopefully will soon be in situ near Christ Church. Important information will be displayed here for the attention of all Swanland residents, so that everyone can be kept up to date with village matters. From the Chairman of the Village Association

We do hope that our regularly

updated website is keeping you in

touch with all the issues that are

having an impact on Swanland at

the moment. It is difficult to reach

all our members via email as we do

not have addresses for the majority

of residents in the SVA. It is also

important for us to have a consensus of opinion on urgent matters when the

need arises. To this end, please may I ask all our members who are online,

to consider passing on their email addresses to our Membership Secretary,

Louse Macfarlane, who will, of course, answer any concerns re data

protection. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

The new SVA noticeboard, courtesy of Duchy Homes, hopefully will soon

be in situ near Christ Church. Important information will be displayed here

for the attention of all Swanland residents, so that everyone can be kept up

to date with village matters.

As I write, the relocation of the Doctor's surgery is still under discussion. It

would be extremely disappointing to lose this very important facility at a

time when the village is about to welcome many more new residents to

Swanland. With new developments being built, and more in the pipeline,

one wonders why land could not have been sought for our own surgery in

Swanland. We await the final decision in March.

The SVA committee, alongside many other volunteers, works extremely

hard on your behalf in Swanland. At our AGM Yvonne Fisher, our very

efficient Secretary, resigned from the committee, and Michelle Hopton, the

Parish Clerk, has now taken her place. A new resident, Christine Walker,

has also joined the team. We welcome them both on board. Rich Fowler

has resigned due to family commitments. Linda Mitchelson has retired

from her role as the Litter Picking coordinator and Christine has now taken

it over. We thank Yvonne, Rich and Linda for the time they have given to

their various roles.

We were all deeply saddened to learn of the death of Roz Jordan Jackson.

She worked tirelessly for the Parish Council and was such an invaluable

supporter of the SVA. We will miss her wisdom and expertise, and huge

involvement in village activities. We send our sympathy to Colin and all

the family.

A message from the Membership Secretary

I have been looking at the total population of the village of Swanland and

the number of people who are members of the Swanland Village

Association – around 4000 live in the village and last year only 346 people

were paid up members. To help maintain the charm of this village we need

your help (only £2 per year) please! This goes towards summer and

winter planting, keeping the village tidy, pond maintenance, producing the

Newsletter three times a year, etc.

There is a form on the back of this Newsletter with the necessary details

for joining – we would appreciate it if you would seriously consider

joining the SVA now. Thank you.

Swanland Lunch Club

We have space for more people at our weekly

lunches at Christ Church hall by the pond. These

take place in school term time only.

Please contact us if you would like to come and

sample these – a chance to get out and have a chat as

well as a meal. It is mainly for elderly people of

Swanland who are living on their own – but

exceptions are made!!

The cost is £3 for a 2-course hot meal followed by

tea/coffee. Transport can be provided if necessary.

Please phone Linda White 634 222 or Pat Burman 631131 for more details.

Rosemary Jordan-Jackson We were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden

passing of "Roz" on 11 January 2019.

She was for 10 years our very diligent Parish Clerk.

After that she devoted much of her time to her colourful paintings, many of

which she exhibited and sold.

A lovely smiling person who will be greatly missed in Swanland.

Our sympathies go to her husband Colin and her family.

It is hoped to hold an art exhibition in Swanland as a tribute to her in the

summer.

Swanland in Bloom

Winter is a quiet time for the Swanland in Bloom

Gardeners; a time to reflect on last year’s work and

thoughts of the jobs for the coming season. The Parish

Council has granted me permission to refurbish the bus

shelter opposite the pond. All those who wielded a

paint brush last year to paint the pond fence would be welcome to help

paint the shelter. I plan to start in late March - you have been warned !!!!!!

I’m planning a Spring Open Garden event on Sunday 26 May, (Spring

Bank Holiday weekend), although I’m open to suggestions for another

date, bearing in mind Hessle West Open Gardens are on Sunday 19 May.

Please contact me before 31 March if you wish to participate.

Swanland Litter Picking

I am Christine Walker, a newcomer to the village,

and at the Village Association AGM I agreed to take

over the litter picking rota.

The Parish Council used to employ a road sweeper

to keep the centre of the village tidy. On retirement a

replacement could not be found, so the SVA offered

to take over. A team of volunteers, on a rota basis,

give up their time (2 hours per week) to keep the

centre of the village litter free and, in return, the

Parish Council gives the association a donation.

Equipment is provided - a barrow with brush, bags, bins, pickers and high-

viz vest - which is currently stored behind the butchers. After a week’s

litter experience my husband and I were surprised how much litter was in

and around the pond and in the bus shelter - drink cans, plastic bags, a

black bag of dog poo, cigarette ends, cigarette wrappers and foil, tissues

and crisp packets.

Recently three volunteers have dropped out due to ill health and I am

looking for new recruits to keep the centre of our lovely village litter free.

There are 35 pickers on the rota and I hope to build this up to 52 so that

each volunteer only has one session per year. If you can spare a couple of

hours every nine months please contact me:

Planning Update

Tranby Lane – Nearing completion for total of 49 residences.

Humber View – This was approved a long time ago for 14 Residences

and is only partly completed. We are unsure exactly what the delay has

been but understand there was a road access problem.

West Leys - The original Planning application was approved for 79

residences by ERYC in May 2017. A further application was submitted for

a total of 100 residences and we understand that ERYC have approved

this!

West Wold – Originally planned as 35 residences the developers are

proposing 53 residences. NOTE - this is NOT yet a formal application but

a letter of intent.

The original local plan allocated Swanland 173 residences. The number is

now up to 194 approved with another 53 proposed. This would take us to

247 in total.

There are many more details and comments on the Parish Council and

Swanland Village websites.

Village Hall News

The end of last year saw our very lively and

successful 100 Club social. As usual, this was

extremely well attended, mince pies and mulled

wine flowed freely, and the Christmas draw was

made. Our thanks again go to Marion Riley for the

organisation and sheer hard work that goes into

making this event such a success.

Since the start of the year there have been lots of new bookings for the Hall

and it looks as though this is going to be a very busy year. With this in

mind I would like to make an appeal. The Hall is run by a small band of

enthusiastic unpaid volunteers, supported by our caretaking and cleaning

staff. We are looking for more people to lend a hand as ‘friends’ of the

Village Hall, being involved in a number of ways. If you would be

prepared to help as a volunteer in any capacity, however large or small,

please contact me on 07738 529 314 to learn more about the Village Hall

and how you could offer your support.

Swanland Live Shows

For fifteen years the SVA has been bringing very high

quality live shows to Swanland Village Hall. The first one in

2019 will be on Sunday 17 March - a play Joan & Jimmy.

The second is on Saturday 27 April - a musical evening

with Ryan Cook in Concert. Both start at 7.30pm.

Joan & Jimmy tells the story of Joan Littlewood and Jimmy Miller (aka

Ewan MacColl) when both are embarking on a career in radical political

theatre, performing one-night stands across the North of England – early

rural touring!

Ryan Cook mixes classic country music with modern satire. He has forged

a sound between contemporary folk and dyed-in-the-wool country.

Both events cost £8 adults (£7 for SVA members paid before the day) and

£4 for schoolchildren. Tickets from Yvonne at Mere House 634 863

Swanland Pond Partnership

We are extremely grateful to the 12 volunteers who

helped with our autumn maintenance, cutting back the

reeds and tidying up the pond. It was fortunate that we had

more volunteers, as three cars had been left overnight in

the parking bays which made things difficult, operations

wise. If you sometimes park your car at the pond overnight, please look out

for and respect coned off areas or parking restriction signs. They are there

for good reason and we always try to keep disruption to a minimum.

We have continued our efforts to find the elusive leak(s) using simple

methods. Whilst we’ve had no major breakthroughs, the back wall (in front

of the village hall) is clearly in a poor state of repair so our next priority is

for this to be assessed and repaired. We also need to investigate whether

we could be losing water from the pond bed close to the back wall. The

Parish Council has contacted several companies with a view to their

assessing the wall for repair, whilst addressing the leakage issue. Two

companies have already carried out site visits and we await their proposals.

Swanland Bowling Club

As the new season approaches Swanland Bowling Club is

looking for new members, both male and female. All ages

and levels of experience are welcome. We are a very

friendly group with about 50 members, half ladies and half

gentlemen. We play on the bowling green at the back of the Doctor’s

Surgery, close to the pond, and we open on Monday 15 April.

Lots of work has been done by our fantastic team of volunteers during the

winter months to ensure we have a good quality green and improved

buildings.

The club offers a greatly reduced membership fee for newcomers who have

never bowled outside before. Coaching is available on request and

equipment can be loaned if required.

Come along to our Open Day on Sunday 28 April from 10am to 12 noon,

when there will be members available to talk to and you can have a go at

bowling with their guidance. If you would like to come before that date

please call the number below.

We have men’s, ladies’ and mixed teams playing in the local leagues and

last year several newcomers soon found themselves in the teams. We

organise social evenings two or three times a year, also internal club events

throughout the season, which ends towards the middle of September.

For further information please contact: Peter Dickinson (Club Secretary) or

Margaret Dickinson (Ladies Secretary) 634 309.

Swanland Show

We will be holding a plant sale in May to help raise funds to

stage the Swanland show. The provisional date for this is

Saturday 11May - look for posters around the village

nearer the event.

Swanland Show will be held on Saturday 14 September at

St Barnabas’ Church when people from Swanland and afar come to display

what they have produced. The categories include handicraft, produce

(baking etc.), art, floral art, fruit and vegetable (home grown), flowers,

photography and a children’s section. Each category has many classes so

there is plenty of choice. If anyone partakes in any of the above then it is a

lovely way to show people your creations, whilst at the same time

competing against others. Children really enjoy entering and the local

schools and beaver/brownie groups get involved. Refreshments are

available and we are usually able to offer a craft table for the children’s

entertainment.

Please visit the Swanland show website for more information, including

programme, or scan the new QR code:

SEAT - Providing Care, Education and Hope

I have wonderful news! We raised the funds required

(£40k) for the construction of new buildings for Swanland

School in Nairobi. Construction is under way and is

expected to be completed ready for the children and staff to

move in March. It will provide improved facilities, access

and drainage for the 250 strong school. The building is in the same area

and will continue to provide care and education for the very poorest

children in the Ngando slum of Nairobi.

We were also able to send funds to support graduating students (45 in total

from both the schools we support) to access good National and Local High

Schools so they can continue with their education. This is a huge

achievement to support underprivileged and vulnerable children from these

communities and give them a real hope for the future through a quality

education.

We really can save and transform lives

through the work we do – please consider

supporting us and being part of that

transforming care and support.

Swanland Schoolgirl is the Prizewinner

On Saturday 10 November nine-year-old

Megan Vizor from Swanland opened a new

show home on nearby Duchy Homes luxury

housing development Cygnet Gardens. House

builder Duchy Homes launched a design

competition in September exclusively for

primary school children at the local nursery and wraparound care provider,

Building Bricks by the Pond. Megan entered the competition to ‘draw your

dream house’ and won first place.

She was the guest of honour at the show home launch and cut the ribbon to

officially open the 5-bedroom home for viewing. In addition, Duchy

Homes presented Megan with a Lego Creator house building set, which is

hoped it will inspire the talented school girl to bring her amazing house

designs to life!

Jamie Loncaster Memorial Fund

1,000th

Young Person Screened by the Jamie Loncaster Memorial

Fund.

It’s great to report that the fund saw its 1,000th

young person screened in

October 2018.

Local teenager Chloe Waugh (17), a pupil of South Hunsley Sixth Form

College, was one of Jamie’s best friends. They both started at Swanland

Primary School back in 2006 and often walked to and from school

together. It therefore made the milestone even

more poignant.

Chloe’s ECG was performed by Louise

Darbyshire from Cardiac Risk in the Young

and subsequently reviewed by the CRY

Cardiologist and Research Fellow in

attendance, Dr. Gemma Parry-Williams. (L-R): Graham and Jenny Loncaster; Louise Darbyshire (CRY); Chloe Waugh

The next scheduled screening event by Jamie’s Fund is in April 2019 and

is open to anyone aged 14-35. It will be held at South Hunsley School and

Sixth Form College in Melton.

207 people had an ECG at the fund’s fifth two day Heart Screening event

at South Hunsley School back in October. 2 were referred for further

consultation. 1,026 young people have been screened to date, with 32

referred. More details can be found at: www.jamieloncaster.co.uk

In April 2019 there will be another 200 FREE heart screening places

for those aged 14-35.

The Annual Cake Bake and Coffee Morning was held on

Friday 23 November at St. Barnabas Church Hall and over 200

people passed through the doors, with many donations of

home-baked cakes. Special thanks go to Claire Milner, who

donated some fantastic ‘show-stopper’ cakes for the ever

popular cake raffle. The total raised on the day this year was an amazing

£1,910….!

Jamie’s family would like to thank everyone who baked, attended and

donated; special thanks go to St. Barnabas Church and to Judith Bishop for

making over 250 cups of tea and coffee…!
