Feast of the Holy Family

Jubilee Year of Mercy

December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36)

Since the 14th century, the Church has declared a Jubilee Year every 25 or 50 years,

dedicating that year as a special time to encounter God’s blessings, be forgiven of sin, and renew our love for God and one another. Once in a while, the Church will call a special, or extraordinary, Jubilee Year to coincide with a significant event or need in the world. Pope Francis sees a great need in the world today for all people to experience God’s love in real and tangible ways. That is why he has called for an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy to begin on December 8, 2015.

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ,

you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.

Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things;

made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father,

of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error:

let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,

and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,

and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus,

through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen. www.dsj.org/jubilee-year-of-mercy

Maria Marroquin, the Director of the Day Laborer Center in Mountain View, is a very humble person. She speaks for her people and does not bring up herself until asked to do so. Her story is a familiar one for Latin American immigrants. She came here with her son in 1997 hop-ing for a better life. She found work as a maid and kept at it. She worked at the Day Laborer Center and found out how hard it was for the young workers. They would stand in the parking lot of Home De-pot, get a job for the day and then the employer would not pay them after they had worked all day. He would just drive away. The Day Laborer Center screens the employers so that employees are paid a decent wage. They provide other services as well.

Maria said she was struck by the prejudice against day workers. They are often called “lazy” because people see them standing in the park-ing lot hoping for work. Maria has brought respect and dignity to the people she helps. She, herself, was a day worker once and knows what needs to happen in order for people to become self-sufficient and to be respected. She speaks for her people when she says they are hard-working and respectable individuals and family members.

We remember Christ teaching us that when we do for the least of his brethren we do for Him. We are always on the receiving end of God’s mercy. In the words of Peter (I Peter 1:3) “by God’s great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” We have not done anything to deserve that mercy. It is given freely to all of us. In the words of Luke (6:32-38) “Be merciful . . . stop judging . . . Forgive.”
