    Idea of writing a novel

Jose Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and medical

doctor, conceived the idea of writing a

novel that would expose the ills of

    Philippine society after reading Harriet

Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Hepreferred that the prospective novel

express the way Filipino culture was

backward, anti-progress, anti-intellectual,and not conducive to the ideas of the Age

    of Enlightenment.

Reason why the project did not materialize:

Initially, the novel was planned to coverand describe all phases of Filipino life, but

almost everybody wanted to write about

women. Rizal even saw his companionsspend more time gambling and flirting with

Spanish women. Because of this, he

pulled out of the plan of co-writing with

others and decided to draft the novel

    alone.

Intellectual Legacies of Rizal relevant in our

daily life:On a fathers useful advice to a son

You are a man now and you must think about your

future and about your duties. You must learn the scienceof life (how to live with other people) and if you remain in

my shadow (always becoming dependent on ones

parents) you will not learn to look far ahead you must

learn of others and greater things.. Sacrifice (give uploving a girlfriend for continuing ones studies) for the

    future. (Crisostomo Ibarra)

On the attitude of children towards theirparents

To carry out my fathers ideas will be morefitting than to weep for him I wish to be

    On developing self confidence

I made the pupils think that they were morecapable than they really were, which urged them

on to study just as any confidence leads to

    notable achievement(School teacher to Ibarra)

On the real cause of disunity

Each one thinks only of himself, no one thinks

of the rest, and therefore we are all weak(DonFilipo to the Governadorcillo)

they do(Simoun to several companions)On the lack of personal involvement of the

    people

I can admit that the government does not knowthe people, but I believe that the people knowthe government even less. There are uselessofficials, bad ones, if you wish but there are alsogood ones, and if these are unable to doanything, it is because they meet with an inertmass, the people who take little part in theaffairs that concern them(Ibarra to Tasio)
