A nationally known scholar, he
dedicated his career to the training of child psychologists and to the promotion of evidence-based prevention, early identification and treatment of children. Dr. Ullman influenced the development of many child clinical psychologists who are now in academic and community practice settings across the country.
Douglas Ullman had the unique ability to bring professionals together to work on children’s behalf. This conference series was created to extend his vision of collaborative state-of-the-science services for youth and families.

This conference will focus on suicide risk in adolescents. Through a varied and lively presentation format, you will learn how to recognize and intervene with suicidal adolescents. Numerous case studies, role-plays, and videotaped interviews will be used to illustrate points and demonstrate techniques. Topic areas covered will include: cutting-edge clinical research, training in differential assessments of suicidality, training in differential treatments of suicidal states (e.g., acute vs. chronic risk), ethical considerations, and countertransference considerations.
Dr. Jobes will provide an empirically-based assessment and treatment approach developed from 25 years of ongoing clinical practice. Contemporary clinical issues (e.g., HIPAA, managed care, the role of hospitalization, medications, “suicide” lyrics in popular music, and the common and inappropriate use of “safety contracts”) will be discussed and explored.
An important subtext throughout this conference is an examination of what makes life worth living—a critical concept that clearly applies to suicidal and non-suicidal patients as well.
You will learn how to:
Understand the incidence and risk profiles of adolescent suicidality in clinical practice
Differentially assess the risk of suicidal adolescent patients
Effectively treat suicidal adolescent patients, particularly in outpatient practice
Use a new empirically-based approach—the CAMS model—for the assessment and treatment of adolescent suicidality
Provide effective clinical practice that should be protective in relation to potential malpractice liability
